Abstract

Chemical vapour deposition enables large-domain growth of ideal graphene, yet many applications of graphene require the controlled inclusion of specific defects. We present a one-step chemical vapour deposition procedure aimed at retaining the precursor topology when incorporated into the grown carbonaceous film. When azupyrene, the molecular analogue of the Stone-Wales defect in graphene, is used as a precursor, carbonaceous monolayers with a range of morphologies are produced as a function of the copper substrate growth temperature. The higher the substrate temperature during deposition, the closer the resulting monolayer is to ideal graphene. Analysis, with a set of complementary materials characterisation techniques, reveals morphological changes closely correlated with changes in the atomic adsorption heights, network topology, and concentration of 5-/7-membered carbon rings. Abstract

Water-solid interfaces pervade the natural environment and modern technology. On some surfaces, water-water interactions induce the formation of partially dissociated interfacial layers; understanding why is important to model processes in catalysis or mineralogy. The complexity of the partially dissociated structures often make it difficult to probe them in a quantitative manner. Here, we utilize normal incidence x-ray standing waves (NIXSW) to study the structure of partially dissociated water dimers (H2O-OH) at the Fe2O3(012) surface (also called (1-102) or R-cut surface); a system simple enough to be tractable, yet complex enough to capture the essential physics. We find the H2O and terminal OH groups to be the same height above the surface within experimental error (1.45 +/- 0.04 Angstrom and 1.47 +/- 0.02 Angstrom, respectively), in line with DFT-based calculations that predict comparable Fe-O bond lengths for both water and OH species. This result is understood in the context of cooperative binding, where the formation of the H-bond between adsorbed H2O and OH induces the H2O to bind more strongly, and OH to bind more weakly compared to when these species are isolated on the surface. The surface OH formed by the liberated proton is found to be in plane with a bulk truncated (012) surface (-0.01 +/- 0.02 Angstrom). DFT calculations based on various functionals correctly model the cooperative effect, but overestimate the water-surface interaction.

4. Thermodynamic Driving Forces for Substrate Atom Extraction by Adsorption of Strong Electron Acceptor Molecules

Abstract

A quantitative structural investigation is reported, aimed at resolving the issue of whether substrate adatoms are incorporated into the monolayers formed by strong molecular electron acceptors deposited onto metallic electrodes. A combination of normal-incidence X-ray standing waves, low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the systems TCNQ and F4TCNQ on Ag(100) lie at the boundary between these two possibilities and thus represent ideal model systems with which to study this effect. A room-temperature commensurate phase of adsorbed TCNQ is found not to involve Ag adatoms, but to adopt an inverted bowl configuration, long predicted but not previously identified experimentally. By contrast, a similar phase of adsorbed F4TCNQ does lead to Ag adatom incorporation in the overlayer, the cyano endgroups of the molecule being twisted relative to the planar quinoid ring. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that this behaviour is consistent with the adsorption energetics. Annealing of the commensurate TCNQ overlayer phase leads to an incommensurate phase that does appear to incorporate Ag adatoms. Abstract

While the phenomenon of metal substrate adatom incorporation into molecular overlayers is generally believed to occur in several systems, the experimental evidence for this relies on the interpretation of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images, which can be ambiguous and provides no quantitative structural information. We show that surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD) uniquely provides unambiguous identification of these metal adatoms. We present the results of a detailed structural study of the Au(111)-F4TCNQ system, combining surface characterisation by STM, low energy electron diffraction and soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with quantitative experimental structural information from normal incidence X-ray standing waves (NIXSW) and SXRD, together with dispersion corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excellent agreement is found between the NIXSW data and the DFT calculations regarding the height and conformation of the adsorbed molecule, which has a twisted geometry rather than the previously supposed inverted bowl shape. SXRD measurements provide unequivocal evidence for the presence and location of Au adatoms, while the DFT calculations show this reconstruction to be strongly energetically favoured., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures

Taubes' gluing theorems establish the existence of ASD connections on closed, oriented 4-manifolds. We extend these gluing results to the mASD connections of Morgan-Mrowka-Ruberman on oriented 4-manifolds with cylindrical ends. Abstract

We introduce the AusTraits database - a compilation of values of plant traits for taxa in the Australian flora (hereafter AusTraits). AusTraits synthesises data on 448 traits across 28,640 taxa from field campaigns, published literature, taxonomic monographs, and individual taxon descriptions. Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological attributes (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects of ecological variation. AusTraits contains curated and harmonised individual- and species-level measurements coupled to, where available, contextual information on site properties and experimental conditions. This article provides information on version 3.0.2 of AusTraits which contains data for 997,808 trait-by-taxon combinations. We envision AusTraits as an ongoing collaborative initiative for easily archiving and sharing trait data, which also provides a template for other national or regional initiatives globally to fill persistent gaps in trait knowledge.

We give simple arithmetic conditions that force the Sylow $p$-subgroup of the critical group of a strongly regular graph to take a specific form. These conditions depend only on the parameters $(v, k, \lambda, \mu)$ of the strongly regular graph under consideration. We give many examples, including how the theory can be used to compute the critical group of Conway's $99$-graph and to give an elementary argument that no $srg(28,9,0,4)$ exists., Comment: 20 pages

17. Subcapsular hematoma resulting in hepatic ischemia as a complication of necrotizing pancreatitis.

Abstract

This report presents a case of necrotizing pancreatitis resulting in a large hepatic subcapsular hematoma that led to development of hepatic ischemia and early stages of liver failure. Following surgical decompression, liver function dramatically improved, but large areas of peripheral hepatic infarction had developed. This case demonstrates the risks of a rapidly expanding hepatic subcapsular hematoma, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and aggressively treating active bleeding, and cautions against administering anticoagulation and tissue-plasminogen activator in this clinical scenario.

24. Death and Dying: A Systematic Review into Approaches Used to Support Bereaved Children

Abstract

Supporting, caring for and working with bereaved children is both daunting and challenging, yet not much is known about how schools can help children to cope with death and dying. The main objective of this study was to identify approaches used to support children who are grieving, and to explore implications for teachers. The use of retrospective autoethnography sets out this review as a practitioner enquiry-based project. A systematic review of literature involving school-aged children was undertaken. The focus of these studies was on approaches to death and dying taken by children, parents and teachers--which helped recently bereaved children to cope. The studies all relate to children aged 3-18. Four databases were searched, up to and including the spring of 2019: British Education Index; Child Development & Adolescent Studies; ERIC; and PsycINFO. The included studies were analysed using a qualitative enquiry model which draws on metaethnography. Abstracts and titles of 765 articles were examined. Following the selection process, 15 studies were included. All of the studies were peer-reviewed, published after 2000 and used qualitative methods of data collection (interviews, ethnographies, a case study and observations). Encouraging children to openly communicate, find comfort in various ways and express emotion regularly were the most common approaches. The results indicate that if the correct approaches are taken, children can feel supported during a challenging and fearful time in their lives. Future research is required on the effects of specific teacher-led approaches in schools.

Abstract

Premise: Agriculture expansion, livestock, and global change have transformed biological communities and altered, through aerosols and direct deposition, N:P balance in soils of inter‐Andean valleys, potentially affecting flowering phenology of many species and thereby flowering synchrony and plant reproduction. Methods: We evaluated the influence of variation in temperature and moisture along the local elevational gradient and treatments with the addition of N and P and grazing on flowering synchrony and reproduction of Croton, a dominant shrub of the inter‐Andean dry scrub. Along the elevational gradient (300 m difference between the lowest and highest site), we set up plots with and without grazing nested with four nutrient treatments: control and addition of N or P alone or combined N + P. We recorded the number of female and male flowers in bloom monthly from September 2017 to August 2019 to calculate flowering synchrony. We assessed fruiting, seed mass, and pre‐dispersal seed predation. Results: Higher growing‐season soil temperatures, which were negatively associated with local elevation and higher nitrogen availability promoted flowering synchrony of Croton, particularly among larger plants. Greater flowering synchrony, high soil temperatures, and addition of N + P resulted in production of more fruits of Croton, but also intensified pre‐dispersal seed predation. Conclusions: Temperature, availability of moisture throughout the elevational gradient, and nutrient manipulation affected flowering synchrony, which subsequently affected production of fruits in Croton. These results emphasize the critical role of current anthropogenic changes in climate and nutrient availability on flowering synchrony and reproduction of Croton, a dominant plant of the inter‐Andean scrub. Abstract

Global declines in ecosystem extent and condition mean there is an increasing demand for recovery and conservation plans. Conservation plans for ecological communities require a management framework with measurable, time‐bound objectives. Efficient and structured processes that facilitate timely and comparable conservation plans are essential, especially where resources are constrained.We describe a process to streamline the development of conservation plans by combining functionally similar community sub‐types into a multi‐community State and Transition Model that can be used to guide conservation planning. We demonstrate this approach in a case study using eucalypt dominated woodlands of southern Australia—an ecosystem which occupies a vast geographical range across temperate Australia and includes many distinct vegetation communities, a growing number of which are endangered or threatened.Australian woodland ecologists (grouped according to their knowledge of three broad woodland sub‐types) were asked to develop causal chains to describe all factors associated with transitions among woodland condition states, and estimate the likelihoods associated with each transition at two time‐scales.The resultant State and Transition Model includes a set of eight general condition states that are common to eucalypt dominated woodlands, and 364 unique causal chains describing the drivers of all plausible transitions. We include an example of how the same information can be presented as a series of decision trees aimed at supporting on‐ground management decisions.The case study demonstrates that it is possible to construct a detailed State and Transition Model that synthesizes knowledge across multiple similar vegetation communities. To date, State and Transition Models focused on single communities or a smaller spatial scale, and this is the first attempt to construct a nationally relevant multi‐community State and Transition Model via a structured and participatory process.Synthesis and applications. This approach can be applied at multiple spatial scales to improve and streamline the development of robust conservation plans to improve how we plan for, implement and measure global biodiversity outcomes. Abstract

The Gemini Remote Access to CFHT ESPaDONS Spectrograph has achieved first light of its experimental phase in May 2014. It successfully collected light from the Gemini North telescope and sent it through two 270 m optical fibers to the the ESPaDOnS spectrograph at CFHT to deliver high-resolution spectroscopy across the optical region. The fibers gave an average focal ratio degradation of 14% on sky, and a maximum transmittance of 85% at 800nm. GRACES achieved delivering spectra with a resolution power of R = 40,000 and R = 66,000 between 400 and 1,000 nm. It has a ~8% throughput and is sensitive to target fainter than 21st mag in 1 hour. The average acquisition time of a target is around 10 min. This project is a great example of a productive collaboration between two observatories on Maunakea that was successful due to the reciprocal involvement of the Gemini, CFHT, and NRC Herzberg teams, and all the staff involved closely or indirectly., Comment: Presented at SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation 2014

Abstract

The templated growth of the basic porphyrin unit, free-base porphine (2H-P), is characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory (DFT). The DFT simulations allow the deconvolution of the complex XPS and NEXAFS signatures into contributions originating from five inequivalent carbon atoms, which can be grouped into C-N and C-C bonded species. Polarization-dependent NEXAFS measurements reveal an intriguing organizational behavior: On both Cu(111) and Ag(111), for coverages up to one monolayer, the molecules adsorb undeformed and parallel to the respective metal surface. Upon increasing the coverage, however, the orientation of the molecules in the thin films depends on the growth conditions. Multilayers deposited at low temperatures (LT) exhibit a similar average tilting angle (30 degree relative to the surface plane) on both substrates. Conversely, for multilayers grown at room temperature a markedly different scenario exists. On Cu(111) the film thickness is self-limited to a coverage of approximately two layers, while on Ag(111) multilayers can be grown easily and, in contrast to the bulk 2H-P crystal, the molecules are oriented perpendicular to the surface. This difference in molecular orientation results in a modified line-shape of the C 1s XPS signatures that is dependent on the incident photon energy, which is explained by comparison with depth-resolved DFT calculations. Simulations of ionization energies for differently stacked molecules show no indication for a packing-induced modification of the multilayer XP spectra, thus indicating that the comparison of single molecule calculations to multilayer data is justified., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

Given a closed, connected, oriented 3-manifold with positive first Betti number, one can define an instanton Floer group as well as a quilted Lagrangian Floer group. Each of these is equipped with a chain level grading.
