According to Plato and Aristotle, what defines a capacity (dynamis) is its goal or its activity. But Plato argues that a capacity, even if one can use it for another purpose, has only one characteristic operation (« one capacity-one function » thesis). To a certain extent, Aristotle agrees with him ; in the Topics or in the De Cælo, he just makes some elements more precise in order to help to formulate correct definitions of the capacities. Obviously, the notion of « capacity of contraries » (Metaphysics Θ, 2), which is proper to Aristotle, makes the point much more intricate. Notwithstanding, even this capacity must be defined by reference to its proper goal, and not according to the privation, which is only its object by accident. But one must ask if the notion of capacity « with reason » (meta logou), which is what makes possible the capacity of contraries, really allows Aristotle to go beyond the « one capacity-one function » thesis. Can the logos really « show » by itself its own privation, as Aristotle in Θ, 2 maintains it does ? If it is not the logos that shows it, but the rational soul by its reasoning, the contrary does not belong to the capacity itself, as it is also the case in Plato.

On propose ici une lecture de la Métaphysique inspirée de Ε, 2, 1026a33-b2, prenant la dunamis et l’energeia comme principal sens de l’être. Le couple conceptuel de l’en-puissance et de l’acte fournit ainsi à la fois le principe d’une réponse possible à la question disputée de la « science recherchée », et le fondement d’une ontologie singulière, que l’on caractérise comme une ontologie axiologique. On commence par analyser la signification de ces notions telle qu’elle se déploie en Métaphysique Δ et Θ : au terme de cette analyse, l’acte apparaît comme nommant l’identité réelle, ou réalisée, de l’être et du bien, et l’en-puissance, cette identité comme à réaliser. On montre ensuite, en suivant Ζ et Η, comment le couple de la dunamis et de l’energeia, et non celui de la matière et de la forme, est au principe de la substance sensi­ble, puis, à partir de Λ (en particulier Λ, 5, 1071a3-6), comment la dunamis et l’energeia valent, par-delà les substances sensibles, comme les principes communs à toutes les substances, sous la modalité spécifique de l’analogie. Le couple de l’en-puissance et de l’acte assure ainsi à la fois la généralité du dis­cours ousiologique, et le primat réel du principe théologique (qu’Aristote désigne toujours comme acte, et jamais comme forme). On montre enfin com­ment dunamis et energeia fondent non seulement une ousiologie unitaire, mais aussi une ontologie générale, en ce qu’elles s’appliquent, sous certaines conditions, aux êtres mathématiques. On s’interroge, pour finir, sur la signi­fication de l’inversion, par Plotin, de la dunamis aristotélicienne, et de la désignation du Premier Principe non plus comme acte pur, mais comme « puissance de tout (δύναμις πάντων) ». En ce geste plotinien, on reconnaît l’origine d’un mouvement d’identification du divin non plus au bien, comme le faisait Aristote à travers la notion d’acte pur, mais à la puissance - à une puissance qui, ultimement, pourra être pensée comme excédentaire au bien. Comme la théologie de l’acte pur, cette ontologie axiologique de l’en-puissance et de l’acte est victime d’un oubli dont, en conclusion, est brièvement esquis­sée l’histoire. On the basis of E, 2, 1026a33-b2, we propose to consider dunamis and energeia as the key of the Metaphysics - the principles both of a possi­ble answer to the question of the zhtoumevnh ejpisthvmh, and of an original ontology which can be determined as axiological. We start by analyzing Metaph. Δ and Θ, showing how energeia comes to designate the real or realized iden­tity of being and the good, dunamis, this identity as to realize. We then pro­ceed to show, following Z and H, how it is the conceptual couple of potentia­lity and actuality, and not that of matter and form, which must be considered as the principle of the sensible substance, but also, and more broadly, as it is stated in L, 5, 1071a3-6, as the common principle of every substances, under the specific modality of analogy. The dunamis-energeia couple thus assures both the logical unity of ousiology, and the real supremacy of the theological principle (which Aristotle always calls « act », and never « form »). Beyond this unitary ousiology, we show how dunamis and energeia can also be considered as the principles of a general ontology, insofar as they can be applied, under peculiar conditions, to the mathematika. The question then remains to know why Plotinus’s First Principle is not pure act anymore but δύναμις πάντων. We suggest that this designation could be the beginning of a process by which God comes to be identified no longer with the Good, but with power - a power that will eventually be conceived as beyond Good and Evil. As a conclusion, we briefly sketch the story of the oblivion not only of the theology of pure act, but also of the axiological ontology of potentiality and actuality.

Cet ouvrage a comme objectif de définir la nature et le rôle des disciplines mathématiques (ou dianoia) dans le système épistémologique élaboré au sein de la République de Platon. Décrite au livre VI (509d-511e), l’analogie de la ligne complexifie l’épistémologie dualiste classique, opposant opinion et science, vers une épistémologie à quatre paliers. Enfin, quant à la nature de cet objet, c’est l’hypothèse, interprétée comme une espèce d’opinion vraie, qui constitue selon nous le candidat le plus crédible à ce rôle., This work aims to define the nature and role of mathematical disciplines (dianoia) in the epistemological system elaborated in the Republic. Described in book VI (509d-511e), the image of the divided line complexifies the classical dualistic epistemology, opposing opinion and science, thereby created an epistemological model operating on four levels: an intermediate space is opened between the two extremes to make room for mathematical disciplines. Thereby, and despite their belonging to the great category of the intelligible, Plato refuses to grant them the status of science, which he reserves for noêsis. Finally, regarding the nature of this object, it is the hypothesis, interpreted as a true opinion, that constitutes the most likely candidate for this role.

Il est souvent dit que l’aristotélisme représente un renversement du platonisme. Or, une lecture de Mét. N.2 nous porte à croire qu’il s’agit moins d’un renversement que d’un dépassement. Cette thèse a l’ambition d’étudier ce dépassement selon un point de vue spécifique, celui de l’être en puissance. En effet, dans le deuxième chapitre du livre N de la Métaphysique, Aristote critique les platoniciens pour avoir cru que tous les étants seraient « un » s’ils ne réfutaient pas l’argument de Parménide selon lequel il est impossible de contraindre le non-être à être. Aristote identifie ensuite l’erreur fondamentale des platoniciens comme étant d’avoir dit que le non-être « est » et il suggère à la fin de N.2 que le principe que Platon cherchait était véritablement celui de l’être en puissance. Yet, a close reading of the second chapter of Book N of the Metaphysics reveals that we call an overturning might be closer to a surpassing. This thesis will explore this surpassing from a specific point of view, that of potential being. Indeed, in the aforementioned second chapter of Book N, Aristotle criticizes Platonists for having believed that all beings would form a single one if they did not refute Parmenides’ argument against the being of non-being. Aristotle then situates the Platonists’ fundamental mistake as having argued that non-being in some way « is ». However, Plato did not need to make non-being « be » he simply needed to think the multiplicity of ways which being can be said. Only then would he have found the principle of multiplicity that he wanted : potential being (dunamei on). Hence, having failed to notice that being is said in many ways, he could never think « matter » through properly. This, according to Aristotle, condemns Plato to a thought of potential being and material being. In order to argue for this position, we will firstly establish the importance of the Sophist in the platonic project, for as we have said, Aristotle places the Platonist mistake squarely in this dialogue. Secondly, we will need to show how Aristotle’s concept of non-being is central to his conception of potential being. We will do this by offering a close reading of the relevant passages of Book Q of the Metaphysics. Having established in the first chapter that Plato does indeed integrate non-being into being in the Sophist and in the second that Aristotle considers being penetrated by non- being to be merely potential being, we can read N.2 with more precise knowledge of the platonic « error » and in turn liberate Aristotle’s conception of non-being from Plato’s ; the topic of our third chapter. Finally, in our fourth chapter we will show why platonic conceptions of matter can never be adequate for Aristotle and explore the consequences of not having properly distinguished actual being from potential being, namely all of Plato’s principles are merely potential principles and not actual ones. Hence, we can conclude that for Aristotle, Plato’s ideas and principles of being are composite potential beings, close to mere possibilities.

The concept of possibility has an essential function within Husserlian phenomenology. Firstly Husserlian phenomenology is an eidetical one, which is based on a subjective relation towards mere possibilities ; secondly phenomenological reduction reduces all effective objects to mere possible objects of thought ; thirdly the thesis of transcendental idealism implies a supremacy of possible sense in confrontation with [over?] reality ; and each type of transcendental constitution presupposes an “I can”, that is a practical possibility or capacity of the subject. This paper wants to focuse the way on which Husserl conceives a concept of possibility which is different from the Aristotelican concept of δύναμις, from the Leibnizian conception of the being of possible worlds and from the Kantian conception of the possible as a modality of subjective knowledge : where does possibility have to be situated, on the subjective or objective level ? And in which domain do modalities have their origin : in the subjective sphere of stands, in the ideal sphere of propositions, in the ontical sphere of objects of possible experience, or in the noetical and antepredicative sphere of modalisations of perceptive belief ?, Le concept de possibilité a une fonction essentielle en phénoménologie husserlienne. Ce mémoire a pour tâche de déterminer le statut ontologique de la puissance chez Aristote. Pour ce faire, il est d’abord question, dans le premier chapitre, de bien définir les deux sens de la puissance, soit la puissance motrice et l’état potentiel. Nous expliquons aussi alors les multiples sens de la puissance motrice et les multiples types de la puissance que sont la nature, l’âme et l’art. Ensuite, le second chapitre étudie les liens entre l’état potentiel et la matière, d’une part, et les liens entre le non-être, la puissance et la possibilité, d’autre part. Enfin, le troisième chapitre explicite la hiérarchie ontologique aristotélicienne pour en dégager le statut ontologique de la puissance par rapport à l’acte. Cela est fait de trois manières : selon l’antériorité de l’acte sur la puissance au sein d’une substance unique ; selon l’antériorité des êtres éternels, notamment celle du premier moteur, sur les êtres générables et corruptibles ; l’antériorité du bien en acte sur le bien puissance., This master thesis seeks to determine the ontological value of potency in Arstotle’s philosophy. To do so, the first chapter defines the two meanings of potency, which are the power to change something else and the potential state of a being. We then explain the multiple meanings of power and its multiple types, namely nature, soul and art. The second chapter, in addition to analysing the links between potentiality and non-being, also studies how non-being, potency and possibility are connected. Finally, the third chapter explains the aristotelian ontological hierarchy to highlight the ontological value of potency in connection to act. This is done in accordance with three kinds of priority, which are the priority of act over potency in a single substance, the priority of eternal beings, especially the one of the prime mover, over generated and corruptible beings, and the priority of good in actuality over potential good.

We intend here to analyze the Aristotle’s treatment of tò ápeiron, mainly developed in Ph. III 4-8, with a view to highlighting the absence in the classical Greece of an experience of the infinite as “that of which there is always something out”. Thus we’ll show that this Aristotle’s description of the infinite presupposes, on the one hand, the consideration that in fact there is nothing infinite, and, on the other hand, the phenomenon itself of the extinction of the classical Greece., Nos proponemos aquí analizar el tratamiento aristotélico de tò ápeiron, principalmente desarrollado en Ph. I study all the mathematical uses of the terms "dunamis" and "dunasthai" in Ancient Greek Mathematics and in Plato. In questo articolo propongo una ricostruzione e un'interpretazione della sezione centrale del Sofista, in cui vengono esaminate le questione correlate della comunicazione fra i generi dell'essere e della natura della diversità. Considero inoltre alcuni aspetti dell'influenza della posizione di Platone sulla riflessione posteriore, di Aristotele e di alcuni platonici.

Comptés par Aristote comme l'un des principaux sens de l'être, l'en-puissance et l'en-acte ouvrent dans la Métaphysique une voie négligée, mais qui permet peut-être d'en dépasser les lectures aporétiques comme les réductions ontothéologiques. C'est cette voie que l'on se propose de suivre en examinant au fil du texte, et dans leur corrélation, la constitution du projet métaphysique d'Aristote et celle du couple conceptuel de la dunamis et de l'energeia. Irréductibles tant à la puissance et à l'action qu'à la matière et à la forme, l'en-puissance et l'en-acte paraissent à même de fonder une ontologie unitaire, qui se dévoile aussi comme une ontologie axiologique, identifiant en l'acte le mode d'être du bien, en l'en-puissance son mode d'action. Cette ontologie porte une pensée singulière du divin: acte, et non «forme pure», sans puissance, mais non pas impuissant, le premier moteur aristotélicien échappe à l'alternative entre le Dieu tout-puissant de la tradition métaphysique et le Dieu faible des inquiétudes contemporaines. Qu'en est-il, alors, du devenir de cette ontologie? On tente de mesurer la portée du geste par lequel Plotin désigne son premier principe non plus comme acte mais comme puissance de tout, dunamis pantōn. Avec lui s'inaugurent peut-être la subversion et l'oubli d'une pensée pour laquelle l'être, et le divin, ne se confondent ni avec la puissance ni avec la présence.

Članak sadrži razmatranja o Aristotelovoj teoriji mogućnosti (grč. dunamis) i zbiljnosti (grč. energeia), koja je najvećim dijelom izložena u Aristotelovoj Metafizici, knjiga Θ. Autor analizira ambivalentnost tih dvaju izraza u Aristotela, odnosno činjenicu da ih Aristotel primjenjuje u primarnom (ili načelnom) značenju i u modalnom značenju. U prvom značenju oni označavaju načela bitka odnosno postojanja, i to prvenstveno načela kretanja i promjene: dynamis je moć samopokretanja ili pokretanja drugih entiteta, a energeia je jedinstvo kretanja odnosno promjene i njegova cilja. U drugom značenju oni su dva načina prisutnosti: kao način postojanja mogućih i način postojanja zbiljskih (ostvarenih) entiteta. Autor pokazuje da se taj pojmovni par u svojoj ambivalentnosti primjenjuje i u Aristotelovoj kritici izjednačavanja pojmova dynamis i energeia od strane megarske škole kao i u rješenju dvaju ontoloških problema: kretanja i vremena.
