The HORACE suite of programs has been developed to work with large multiple-measurement data sets collected from time-of-flight neutron spectrometers equipped with arrays of position-sensitive detectors. The software allows exploratory studies of the four dimensions of reciprocal space and excitation energy to be undertaken, enabling multi-dimensional subsets to be visualized, algebraically manipulated, and models for the scattering to simulated or fitted to the data. The software is designed to be an extensible framework, thus allowing user-customized operations to be performed on the data. Examples of the use of its features are given for measurements exploring the spin waves of the simple antiferromagnet RbMnF$_{3}$ and ferromagnetic iron, and the phonons in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The complex structure and magnetism of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ was investigated by neutron scattering and EXAFS. Pr has an approximate doublet ground-state and the first excited state is a singlet. This overall crystal field level scheme is similar to metallic Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which is also reported here. While the B-site (Ru) is well ordered throughout, this is not the case for the A-site (Pr/Bi). A distribution of the Pr-O2 bond length indicates the Pr environment is not uniform even for $x=0$. The Bi environment is highly disordered ostensibly due to the 6s lone pairs on Bi$^{3+}$. Correspondingly we find the non-Kramers doublet ground state degeneracy otherwise anticipated for Pr in the pyrochlore structure is lifted so as to produce a quadrupolar singlet ground state with a spatially varying energy gap. For $x=0$, below T$_N$, the Ru sublattice orders antiferromagnetically, with propagation vector \textbf{k}= (0,0,0), as for Y$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$. No ordering associated with the Pr sublattice is observed down to 100 mK. The low energy magnetic response of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ features a broad spectrum of magnetic excitations associated with inhomogeneous splitting of the Pr quasi-doublet ground state. For $x=0$ ($x=0.97$) the spectrum is temperature dependent (independent). It appears disorder associated with Bi alloying enhances the inhomogeneous Pr crystal field level splitting so that inter-site interactions become irrelevant for $x=0.97$. Spin fluctuations are reported near the magnetic field driven quantum critical point in YbRh2Si2. On cooling, ferromagnetic fluctuations evolve into incommensurate correlations located at q0=+/- (delta,delta) with delta=0.14 +/- 0.04 r.l.u. At low temperatures, an in plane magnetic field induces a sharp intra doublet resonant excitation at an energy E0=g muB mu0 H with g=3.8 +/- 0.2. Zero field muon spin relaxation (ZF-{\mu}SR) has been used to study the magnetic properties of the underdoped giant magnetoresistive ruthenocuprates (GMR) RuSr2Nd1.8-xY0.2CexCu2O10-d (x = 0.95, 0.80). The results show a gradual loss of initial asymmetry A0 at the ruthenium spin transition temperature, TRu. At the same time the electronic relaxation rate, lambda shows a gradual increase with decreasing temperature below TRu. These results have been interpreted as evidence for Cu spin cluster formation below TRu. These magnetically ordered clusters grow as the temperature is decreased thus causing the initial asymmetry to decrease slowly. GMR is observed over a wide temperature range in the materials studied and the magnitude increases as the temperature is reduced from TRu to 4 K which suggests a relation between Cu spin cluster size and -MR., Comment: Journal of physics condensed matter (2011)

We report on inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on the molecular spin ring CsFe$_8$, in which eight spin-5/2 Fe(III) ions are coupled by nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction. We have recorded INS data on a non-deuterated powder sample up to high energies at the time-of-flight spectrometers FOCUS at PSI and MARI at ISIS, which clearly show the excitation of spin waves in the ring. Due to the small number of spin sites, the spin-wave dispersion relation is not continuous but quantized. Furthermore, the system exhibits a gap between the ground state and the first excited state. We have modeled our data using exact diagonalization of a Heisenberg-exchange Hamiltonian together with a small single-ion anisotropy term. Due to the molecule's symmetry, only two parameters $J$ and $D$ are needed to obtain excellent agreement with the data. The mean square atomic displacement in hcp-phase solid He-4 has been measured in crystals with a molar volume of 21.3 cm^3. It is temperature independent from 1 K to 140 mK, with no evidence for an anomaly in the vicinity of the proposed supersolid transition. The mean square displacement is different for in-plane motions (0.122 +/- 0.001 A^(2)) and out-of-plane motions (0.150 +/- 0.001 A ^(2))., Comment: 4 figures, 4 tables. The negative thermal expansion (NTE) compound ZrW2O8 has been well-studied because it remains cubic with a nearly constant, isotropic NTE coefficient over a broad temperature range. However, its elastic constants seem just as strange as its volume because NTE makes temperature acts as positive pressure, decreasing volume on warming and, unlike most materials, the thermally-compressed solid softens. Does ZrW2O8 also soften when pressure alone is applied? Using pulse-echo ultrasound in a hydrostatic SiC anvil cell, we determine the elastic tensor of monocrystalline ZrW2O8 near 300 K as a function of pressure. We indeed find an unusual decrease in bulk modulus with pressure. Our results are inconsistent with conventional lattice dynamics, but do show that the thermodynamically-complete constrained-lattice model can relate NTE to elastic softening as increases in either temperature or pressure reduce volume, establishing the predictive power of the model, and making it an important concept in condensed-matter physics., Comment: 11 PAGES, 4 FIGURES, 1 TABLE

We report that Bi doping drives Pr$_x$Bi$_{2-x}$Ru$_2$O$_7$ from an antiferromagnetic insulator ($x=2$) to a metallic paramagnet ($x\approx 1$) with a broad low $T$ maximum in $C/T$. Neutron scattering reveals local low energy spin excitations ($\hbar\omega\approx 1$ meV) with a spectrum that is unaffected by heating to $k_BT>>\hbar\omega$. We show that a continuous distribution of splittings of the non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ground state doublet such as might result from various types of lattice strain can account for all the data., Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures

Critical neutron scattering measurements have been performed on CsCo$_{0.83}$Mg$_{0.17}$Br$_3$, a dilute stacked triangular lattice (STL) Ising antiferromagnet (AF). A two component lineshape associated with the critical fluctuations appears at a temperature coincident with T$_{N1}$ observed in pure CsCoBr$_3$. Such scattering is indicative of fluctuations in prototypical random field Ising model (RFIM) systems. The random field domain state arises in this case due to geometrical frustration within the STL Ising AF, which gives rise to a 3 sublattice Neel state, in which one sublattice is disordered. Magnetic vacancies nucleate AF domains in which the vacancies reside on the disordered sublattice thereby generating a RFIM state in the absence of an applied magnetic field., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out on Cd_2Re_2O_7 near and below the phase transition it exhibits at Tc' ~195 K. Cd_2Re_2O_7 was recently discovered as the first, and to date only, superconductor with the cubic pyrochlore structure. Superlattice Bragg peaks show an apparently continuous structural transition at Tc', however the order parameter displays anomalously slow growth to ~Tc'/10, and resolution limited critical-like scattering is seen above Tc'. High resolution measurements show the high temperature cubic Bragg peaks to split on entering the low temperature phase, indicating a (likely tetragonal) lowering of symmetry below Tc'., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
