Abstract

Ce-doped SiO x N y films are deposited by magnetron reactive sputtering from a CeO 2 target under nitrogen reactive gas atmosphere. Visible photoluminescence measurements regarding the nitrogen gas flow reveal a large emission band centered at 450 nm for a sample deposited under a 2 sccm flow. A special attention is paid to the origin of such an emission at high nitrogen concentration. Different emitting centers are suggested in Ce doped SiO x N y films (e.g. band tails, CeO 2, Ce clusters, Ce 3+ ions), with different activation scenarios to explain the luminescence. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals the exclusive presence of Ce 3+ ions whatever the nitrogen or Ce concentrations, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows no clusters or silicates upon high temperature annealing. With the help of photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy (PLE), a wide excitation range from 250 nm up to 400 nm is revealed and various excitations of Ce 3+ ions are proposed involving direct or indirect mechanisms. Nitrogen concentration plays an important role on Ce 3+ emission by modifying Ce surroundings, reducing the Si phase volume in SiO x N y and causing a nephelauxetic effect. Taking into account the optimized nitrogen growth parameters, the Ce concentration is analyzed as new parameter. Under UV excitation, a strong emission is visible to the naked eye with high Ce 3+ concentration (6 at. %). Abstract

PICARD is a scientific space mission dedicated to the study of the solar variability origin. A French micro-satellite will carry an imaging telescope for measuring the solar diameter, limb shape and solar oscillations, and two radiometers for measuring the total solar irradiance and the irradiance in five spectral domains, from ultraviolet to infrared. The mission is planed to be launched in 2009 for a 3-year duration. This article presents the PICARD Payload Data Centre, which role is to collect, process and distribute the PICARD data. The Payload Data Centre is a joint project between laboratories, space agency and industries. The Belgian scientific policy office funds the industrial development and future operations under the European Space Agency program. The development is achieved by the SPACEBEL Company. The Belgian operation centre is in charge of operating the PICARD Payload Data Centre. The French space agency leads the development in partnership with the French scientific research centre, which is responsible for providing all the scientific algorithms. The architecture of the PICARD Payload Data Centre (software and hardware) is presented. The software system is based on a Service Oriented Architecture. The host structure is made up of the basic functions such as data management, task scheduling and system supervision including a graphical interface used by the operator to interact with the system. The other functions are mission-specific: data exchange (acquisition, distribution), data processing (scientific and non-scientific processing) and managing the payload (programming, monitoring). The PICARD Payload Data Centre is planned to be operated for 5 years. All the data will be stored into a specific data centre after this period.

6. Machine Learning‐Based Clustering of Oceanic Lagrangian Particles: Identification of the Main Pathways of the Labrador Current.

Abstract

Modeled geospatial Lagrangian trajectories are widely used in Earth Science, including in oceanography, atmospheric science and marine biology. The typically large size of these data sets makes them arduous to analyze, and their underlying pathways challenging to identify. Here, we show that we can use a machine learning unsupervised k‐means++ clustering method combined with expert aggregation of clusters to identify the pathways of the Labrador Current from a large set of modeled Lagrangian trajectories. The presented method requires simple pre‐processing of the data, including a Cartesian correction on longitudes and a principal component analysis reduction. The clustering is performed in a kernelized space and uses a larger number of clusters than the number of expected pathways. To identify the main pathways, similar clusters are grouped into pathway categories by experts in the circulation of the region of interest. We find that the Labrador Current mainly follows a westward‐flowing and an eastward retroflecting pathway (20% and 50% of the flow, respectively) that compensate each other through time in a see‐saw behavior. These pathways experience a strong variability (representing through time 4%–42% and 24%–73% of the flow, respectively). Two thirds of the retroflection occurs at the tip of the Grand Banks, and one quarter at Flemish Cap. The westward pathway is mostly fed by the on‐shelf branch of the Labrador Current, and the eastward pathway by the shelf‐break branch. Among the pathways of secondary importance, we identify a previously unreported one that feeds the subtropics across the Gulf Stream. Plain Language Summary: Lagrangian trajectories, in which parcels of a fluid or objects are tracked as they move, are widely used in Earth Science, including in oceanography, atmospheric science and marine biology. They typically come in very large data sets containing chaotic trajectories, from which it is difficult to identify the main pathways of the flow. Here, we use a machine learning based algorithm, more specifically an unsupervised clustering algorithm, to identify the main pathways of the Labrador Current in the North Atlantic based on a large set of Lagrangian trajectories obtained from an ocean model. This study shows the power of such a method to help analyze this type of data, and provides a detailed description of the method so it can be used by a broad community on various applications. We find that, when it reached the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, most of the Labrador Current flows either westward toward the Slope Sea or eastward toward the North Atlantic Ocean, in a see‐saw behavior. We also identify a previously unknown minor pathway that brings Labrador Current waters south of the Gulf Stream front. Abstract

Developed at the Observatoire de la C\^ote d'Azur (OCA) within the framework of the PICARD space mission (Thuillier et al., 2006) and with support from the french spatial agency (CNES), MISOLFA (Moniteur d'Images Solaires Franco-Alg\'erien) is a new generation of daytime turbulence monitor. Its objective is to measure both the spatial and temporal turbulence parameters in order to quantify their effects on the solar diameter measurements that will be made from ground using the qualification model of the SODISM (SOlar Diameter Imager and Surface Mapper) instrument onboard PICARD. The comparison of simultaneous images from ground and space should allow us, with the help of the solar monitor, to find the best procedure possible to measure solar diameter variations from ground on the long term. MISOLFA is now installed at the Calern facility of OCA and PICARD is scheduled to be launched in 2010. We present here the principles of the instrument and the first results obtained on the characteristics of the turbulence observed at Calern observatory using this monitor while waiting for the launch of the space mission., Comment: 4 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) Index was developed as a risk index for health outcomes in HIV, and it has been consistently associated with mortality. It shows a significant, yet relatively weak, association with neurocognitive impairment, and little is known about its utility among ethnic/racial minority groups. We examined whether the association between the VACS Index and neurocognition differed by ethnic/racial group. Participants included 674 HIV-infected individuals (369 non-Hispanic whites, 111 non-Hispanic blacks, and 194 Hispanics). Neurocognitive function was assessed via a comprehensive battery. Scaled scores for each neurocognitive test were averaged to calculate domain and global neurocognitive scores. Models adjusting for demographics and HIV disease characteristics not included in the VACS Index showed that higher VACS Index scores (indicating poorer health) were significantly associated with worse global neurocognition among non-Hispanic whites. This association was comparable in non-Hispanic blacks, but nonsignificant among Hispanics (with similar results for English and Spanish speaking). We obtained comparable findings in analyses adjusting for other covariates (psychiatric and medical comorbidities and lifestyle factors). Analyses of individual neurocognitive domains showed similar results in learning and delayed recall. For other domains, there was an effect of the VACS Index and no significant interactions with race/ethnicity. Different components of the VACS Index were associated with global neurocognition by race/ethnicity. In conclusion, the association between the VACS Index and neurocognitive function differs by ethnic/racial group. Identifying key indicators of HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment by ethnic/racial group might play an important role in furthering our understanding of the biomarkers of neuroAIDS.

Abstract

The formation of nano-hillocks on CaF2 crystal surfaces by individual ion impact has been studied using medium energy (3 and 5 MeV) highly charged ions (Xe19+ to Xe30+) as well as swift (kinetic energies between 12 and 58 MeV) heavy ions. For very slow highly charged ions the appearance of hillocks is known to be linked to a threshold in potential energy while for swift heavy ions a minimum electronic energy loss is necessary. With our results we bridge the gap between these two extreme cases and demonstrate, that with increasing energy deposition via electronic energy loss the potential energy threshold for hillock production can be substantially lowered. Surprisingly, both mechanisms of energy deposition in the target surface seem to contribute in an additive way, as demonstrated when plotting the results in a phase diagram. We show that the inelastic thermal spike model, originally developed to describe such material modifications for swift heavy ions, can be extended to case where kinetic and potential energies are deposited into the surface., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Solar Diameter Imager and Surface Mapper (SODISM) on board the PICARD space mission provides wide-field images of the photosphere and chromosphere of the Sun in five narrow pass bands (centered at 215.0, 393.37, 535.7, 607.1, and 782.2 nm). PICARD is a space mission, which was successfully launched on 15 June 2010 into a Sun synchronous dawn-dusk orbit. It represents a European asset aiming at collecting solar observations that can serve to estimate some of the inputs to Earth climate models. The scientific payload consists of the SODISM imager and of two radiometers, SOVAP (SOlar VAriability PICARD) and PREMOS (PREcision MOnitor Sensor), which carry out measurements that allow estimating the Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) and the Solar Spectral Irradiance (SSI) from the middle ultraviolet to the red. The SODISM telescope monitors solar activity continuously. It thus produces images that can also feed SSI reconstruction models. Further, the objectives of SODISM encompass the probing of the interior of the Sun via helioseismic analysis of observations in intensity (on the solar disc and at the limb), and via astrometric investigations at the limb. The latter addresses especially the spectral dependence of the radial limb shape, and the temporal evolution of the solar diameter and asphericity. After a brief review of its original science objectives, this paper presents the detailed design of the SODISM instrument, its expected performance, and the scheme of its flight operations. Abstract

Atmospheric emission is a dominant source of disturbance in ground-based astronomy at mm wavelengths. The Antarctic plateau is recognized to be an ideal site for mm and sub-mm observations, and the French/Italian base of Dome C is among the best sites on Earth for these observations. In this paper we present measurements, performed using the BRAIN-pathfinder experiment, at Dome C of the atmospheric emission in intensity and polarization at 150GHz, one of the best observational frequencies for CMB observations when considering cosmic signal intensity, atmospheric transmission, detectors sensitivity, and foreground removal. Careful characterization of the air-mass synchronous emission has been performed, acquiring more that 380 elevation scans (i.e. "skydip") during the third BRAIN-pathfinder summer campaign in December 2009/January 2010. The extremely high transparency of the Antarctic atmosphere over Dome Concordia is proven by the very low measured optical depth: =0.050 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.011 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic error. Mid term stability, over the summer campaign, of the atmosphere emission has also been studied. Adapting the radiative transfer atmosphere emission model "am" to the particular conditions found at Dome C, we also infer the level of the PWV content of the atmosphere, notoriously the main source of disturbance in millimetric astronomy (=0.77 +/- 0.06 + 0.15 - 0.12 mm). Upper limits on the air-mass correlated polarized signal are also placed for the first time. The degree of circular polarization of atmospheric emission is found to be lower than 0.2% (95%CL), while the degree of linear polarization is found to be lower than 0.1% (95%CL). 24. Large-scale control of the retroflection of the Labrador Current

Abstract

The Labrador Current transports cold, relatively fresh, and well-oxygenated waters within the subpolar North Atlantic and along the western American continental shelf. The contribution to both regions is determined by the strength of the eastward retroflection of the Labrador Current at the Grand Banks. A good understanding of the pathways of the Labrador Current and of their underlying drivers is thus crucial to improve our ability to predict physical and biological changes in the northwestern Atlantic. Here, we investigate the pathways of the Labrador Current using a Machine Learning unsupervised k-means++ clustering method applied to a large set of Lagrangian trajectories. The trajectories are that of virtual particles advected by the velocity field of the GLORYS12V1 ocean reanalysis model. The Labrador Current mainly follows a westward-flowing and an eastward retroflecting pathway (20% and 50% of the flow, respectively) that compensate each other through time in a see-saw behaviour. We develop a retroflection index to investigate the drivers of the retroflection of the Labrador Current. Our analyses reveal that strong retroflection generally occurs when a large-scale circulation adjustment, related to the subpolar gyre, accelerates the Labrador Current and shifts the Gulf Stream northward, partly driven by a northward shift of the zero-wind-stress-curl line in the western North Atlantic. Starting in 2008, a particularly strong northward shift of the Gulf Stream dominates the other drivers. Monitoring winds and circulation around the Grand Banks could thus help predict consequences on marine life in the northwestern Atlantic and to set fishing quotas., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

For the first time, co-located wind vectors and wave spectral characteristics are available thanks to the French/Chinese CFOSAT mission, which includes a wind scatterometer SCAT and a wave scatterometer SWIM. Three years after its launch, CFOSAT data is thoroughly qualified and various scientific work has been undertaken. This paper focuses on CFOSAT SWIM data, its performance and scientific contribution to oceanography, coastal and sea ice study.
