Ion source modification is proposed for efficient production of ion beam and extending of operating Lifetime. Ionization efficiency of the Bernas type ion source has been improved by using a small anode-thin rod, oriented along the magnetic field. The transverse electric field of small anode transport plasma by drift in crossed field to the emission slit. Optimization of the cathode material recycling is used to increase the operating lifetime. Optimization of the wall potential is used for suppression of flakes formation. A three-electrode extraction system was optimized for low energy beam production and efficient space charge neutralization. Pulsed and CW operation of negative ion radio frequency surface plasma source with a solenoidal magnetic field is described. A positive ion source with RF discharge in solenoidal magnetic field is described. In this paper we present an overview of positive ion production in saddle antenna (helicon discharge) radio frequency (SA RF) ion sources. The efficiency of H+ ion production in recently developed RF sources with solenoidal antennas was improved to 2.9 mA/kW. About 24 kW of RF power is typically needed for 70 mA beam current production from a 7 mm emission aperture. This efficiency is relatively low because in the RF discharge with a solenoidal antenna, the plasma is generated near the coil and diffuses to the axis creating a nearly uniform plasma density distribution in all cross sections of the discharge chamber, when the plasma flow is necessary only near an emission aperture. The efficiency of the extracted ion generation was improved significantly by using a saddle antenna with solenoidal magnetic field. In the RF discharge with the saddle antenna the plasma is generated near the axis and the magnetic field suppress the plasma diffusion from the axis, creating a peaked plasma density distribution on the emission aperture. With the SA the efficiency of positive ion generation in the plasma has been improved up to ~100 mA/cm2 per kW of RF power at 13.56 MHz. Continuous wave (CW) operation of the RF source has been tested on the small ORNL SNS test stand. The general design of the CW RF source is based on the pulsed version. A compact design of ion source is presented. Some modifications were made to improve the cooling and to simplify the design. Features of SA RF discharges and ion generation are discussed.

An analytic solution describing an ion-acoustic collisionless shock, self-consistently with the evolution of shock-reflected ions, is obtained. The solution extends the classic soliton solution beyond a critical Mach number, where the soliton ceases to exist because of the upstream ion reflection. The reflection transforms the soliton into a shock with a trailing wave and a foot populated by the reflected ions. The solution relates parameters of the entire shock structure, such as the maximum and minimum of the potential in the trailing wave, the height of the foot, as well as the shock Mach number, to the number of reflected ions. This relation is resolvable for any given distribution of the upstream ions. In this paper, we have resolved it for a simple "box" distribution. Two separate models of electron interaction with the shock are considered. The first model corresponds to the standard Boltzmannian electron distribution in which case the critical shock Mach number only insignificantly increases from M=1.6 (no ion reflection) to M=1.8 (substantial reflection). The second model corresponds to adiabatically trapped electrons. They produce a stronger increase, from M=3.1 to M=4.5. The shock foot that is supported by the reflected ions also accelerates them somewhat further. Non-relativistic collisionless shock waves are widespread in space and astrophysical plasmas and are known as efficient particle accelerators. However, our understanding of collisionless shocks, including their structure and the mechanisms whereby they accelerate particles remains incomplete. We present here the results of numerical modeling of an ion-acoustic collisionless shock based on one-dimensional (1D) kinetic approximation both for electrons and ions with a real mass ratio. Special emphasis is made on the shock-reflected ions as the main driver of shock dissipation. The reflection efficiency, velocity distribution of reflected particles and the shock electrostatic structure are studied in terms of the shock parameters. High energy ion beams (> MeV) generated by intense laser pulses promise to be viable alternatives to conventional ion beam sources due to their unique properties such as high charge, low emittance, compactness and ease of beam delivery. Typically the acceleration is due to the rapid expansion of a laser heated solid foil, but this usually leads to ion beams with large energy spread. Until now, control of the energy spread has only been achieved at the expense of reduced charge and increased complexity. Radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) provides an alternative route to producing laser-driven monoenergetic ion beams. In this paper, we show the interaction of an intense infrared laser with a gaseous hydrogen target can produce proton spectra of small energy spread (~ 4%), and low background. The scaling of proton energy with the ratio of intensity over density (I/n) indicates that the acceleration is due to the shock generated by radiation-pressure driven hole-boring of the critical surface. These are the first high contrast mononenergetic beams that have been theorised from RPA, and makes them highly desirable for numerous ion beam applications.
