2. Partially coherent conical refraction

Abstract

In this paper, we extend the paraxial conical refraction model to the case of the partially coherent light using the unified optical coherence theory. We demonstrate the decomposition of conical refraction correlation functions into well-known conical refraction coherent modes for a Gaussian Schell-model source. Assuming randomness of the electrical field phase of the input beam, we reformulated and significantly simplified the rigorous conical refraction theory. This approach allows us to consider the propagation of light through a conical refraction crystal in exactly the same way as in the classical case of coherent radiation. Having this in hand, we derive analytically the conical refraction intensity both in the focal plane and in the far field, which allows us to explain and rigorously justify earlier experimental findings and predict new phenomena. The last include the counterintuitive effect of narrowing of the conical refraction ring width, disappearance of the dark Poggendorff's ring in the Lloyd's plane, and shift of Raman spots for the low-coherent conical refraction light. We also demonstrate a universal power-law dependence of conical refraction cones coherence degree on the input correlation length and diffraction-free propagation of the low-coherent conical refraction light in the far field., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present an experimental study of the turn-on delay in pulsed mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers. We report the unexpectedly long delay time depending on the pumping current, which does not agree with conventional theoretical predictions for step-like excitation. Similar behavior has been observed in InP- and InAs-based QCLs emitting near 8${\mu}$m. Numerical simulations performed using a model based on rate equations for excitation by current pulses with non-zero rise time provide fair agreement with our observations.

Abstract

We demonstrate the experimental study of the axial intensity distribution of a quasi-Bessel beam with a droplet structure of the central core, formed by an axicon with the round-tip, and the results of the theoretical calculations. We show that the period of droplet quasi-Bessel beam is determined by the shape of the surface rounding and the angle at the top of the axicon lens and depends on the distance to it. The analysis of this dependence makes it possible to restore the shape of the round-tip of the axicon without 3D scanning. Keywords: bessel beams, axicon, droplet beams.

Abstract

The results of studies of 7.5-8.0 μm range surface-emitting ring quantum-cascade lasers are presented. A second-order diffraction grating with a calculated coupling coefficient of ~9 cm-1 is formed on the entire surface of the ring cavity by focused ion beam milling. Surface-emitting lasing at room temperature near 7.75 μm with a threshold current density of ~8 kA/cm2 and an outer radius of the ring cavity of 202 μm is demonstrated. The results of studying the intensity distribution in the far-field near the normal to the surface showed the presence of two maxima. It is shown that the implemented coupling coefficient is not sufficient to ensure single-mode lasing in the studied ring quantum-cascade lasers. Abstract

The results of studies of ring quantum-cascade lasers with surface emission due to a second-order grating formed in the top cladding layers are presented. Surface emission near 7.85 μm with a low threshold current density (3.8 kA/cm2), in comparison with ridge quantum-cascade lasers of the same cavity length is demonstrated. The results of measurements of the intensity distribution of the near and far fields at different pumping levels are presented. The estimated value of the angle of beam extraction relative to the surface normal is in the range (5.7-6.7)o. Abstract

The possibility of fabrication of 4.6 μm spectral range quantum-cascade laser heterostructures by molecular-beam epitaxy technique with non-selective overgrowth by the metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy is shown. The active region of the laser was formed on the basis of a heteropair of In0.67Ga0.33As/In0.36Al0.64As solid alloys. The waveguide claddings are formed by indium phosphide. The results of surface defects inspection and X-ray diffraction analysis of quantum-cascade laser heterostructures allow to conclude that the structural quality of the heterostructures is high and the estimated value of the root mean square surface roughness does not exceed 0.7 nm. Lasers with four cleaved facets exhibit lasing at room temperature with a relatively low threshold current density of the order of 1 kA/cm2.
