Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent in professional soccer and can result in lost training time or match play. It is intuitive that the "return to play" (RTP) pathway will depend, in large part, on the expertise of sports medicine practitioners (e.g. surgeons, physicians, physiotherapists) responsible for player's recovery. Consensus statements on returning athletes to sport following injury acknowledge the contributions of sport psychology and sports nutrition. However, specific consideration on how to integrate these two recognized – but often overlooked components of injury rehabilitation – into existing sport medicine approaches has yet to be examined. Using a framework of milestones directed by the medical physician and physical trainer, the evidence is summarized and suggestions provided on the integration of sports psychology and sports nutrition into an interdisciplinary RTP approach. We examine recovery from a phase approach (acute injury and functional recovery) to highlight interdisciplinary opportunities in the management of musculoskeletal soccer injuries. An interdisciplinary approach is understood to achieve outcomes that could not be achieved within the framework of a single discipline. The incorporation of sports psychology and nutrition theoretically compliment milestones used in current medically-based RTP models. Our hope is that this article serves as a catalyst for interdisciplinary practice and research – not only in sports nutrition and sports psychology – but across all sport and exercise disciplines. The article presents abstracts from various pediatric and sports medicine journals. J. A. Kanaely and R. A. Boileau studied the impact of maturity differences on anaerobic threshold. The results from the study on nutrient intake of young gymnasts by D. Benardot and colleagues found that many gymnasts have diets that might impair their sports performance. Other studies researched iron deficiency in high school runners, the assessment of strength and flexibility by the degree of sexual maturity, and racial differences in blood pressure changes during exercise.

The objective of this work has been to study the origin of surface failures in UHMWPE tibial bearings of total knee replacements. Earlier examination of hundreds of retrieved prostheses, along with analysis of the properties of UHMWPE material from retrieved bearings, had shown that a large number of the bearings suffered from subsurface oxidation. This oxidation was related to the gamma irradiation used to sterilize the tibial bearings. Mechanical properties of the polymer were significantly deteriorated in the oxidized region, with the most severe reduction of strength and ductility occurring about 1 mm beneath the contact surface. In this work the contact stress distribution in the bearings was analyzed, and tribotesting of the bearing materials was carried out under simulated service conditions. Fatigue cracks and delamination developed in bearings tested in a knee simulator and in rolling/sliding test specimens, and the damage was similar to that found in retrieved tibial bearings. The fatigue cracks invariably initiated in the embrittled oxidized layer, and the depth of that layer determined the depth at which the cracks began. The stress analysis showed that the maximum shear stress and von Mises equivalent stress reached high levels in the subsurface oxidized zone where the delamination and contact fatigue failures initiated.

Discusses five common misconceptions that graduate students may have about their future graduate school experiences. Two of these misconceptions are that graduate school would be a continuation of undergraduate experiences and that the study of chemical engineering has nothing to do with human values, ethics, and morals. The article examines the relation among perfectionism, self-evaluation and motivation in dancers. Topics covered include the evaluation of the suitability of the 2 x 2 model and the conclusion that perfectionist dancers affected by evaluative concerns are likely to show self-evaluations associated with unhealthy body related cognition and to experience motivational difficulties.
