The use of solid boron hydride molecules as a fuel for proton-boron fusion was proposed by M. Kr\r{u}s and M. Londesborough at "Interaction of Inorganic Clusters, Cages, and Containers with Light" workshop in November 2021. Here we demonstrate experimentally, for first time, that the solid boron hydride, octadecaborane - \textit{anti}-B${}_{18}$H${}_{22}$, produces a relatively high yield of alpha particles of about $10^9$ per steradian using a sub-nanosecond, low-contrast laser pulse (PALS) with a typical intensity of $10^{16}$ Wcm${}^{-2}$. In contrast to previously published proton-boron studies, the boron hydrides, due to their composition containing only atoms of boron and hydrogen, represent a natural choice for future proton-boron nuclear fusion schemes., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Ion acceleration from gaseous targets driven by relativistic-intensity lasers was demonstrated as early as the late 90s, yet most of the experiments conducted to date have involved picosecond-duration, Nd:glass lasers operating at low repetition rate. Here, we present measurements on the interaction of ultraintense ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm W\,cm^{-2}$, 1 PW), ultrashort ($\sim 70\,\rm fs$) Ti:Sa laser pulses with near-critical ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm cm^{-3}$) helium gas jets, a debris-free targetry compatible with high ($\sim 1\,\rm Hz$) repetition rate operation. We provide evidence of $\alpha$ particles being forward accelerated up to $\sim 2.7\,\rm MeV$ energy with a total flux of $\sim 10^{11}\,\rm sr^{-1}$ as integrated over $>0.1 \,\rm MeV$ energies and detected within a $0.5\,\rm mrad$ solid angle. We also report on on-axis emission of relativistic electrons with an exponentially decaying spectrum characterized by a $\sim 10\,\rm MeV$ slope, i.e., five times larger than the standard ponderomotive scaling. The total charge of these electrons with energy above 2 MeV is estimated to be of $\sim 1 \,\rm nC$, corresponding to $\sim 0.1\,\%$ of the laser drive energy. In addition, we observe the formation of a plasma channel, extending longitudinally across the gas density maximum and expanding radially with time. These results are well captured by large-scale particle-in-cell simulations, which reveal that the detected fast ions most likely originate from reflection off the rapidly expanding channel walls. The latter process is predicted to yield ion energies in the MeV range, which compare well with the measurements. Finally, direct laser acceleration is shown to be the dominant mechanism behind the observed electron energization.

Radiative shocks (RS) are complex phenomena which are ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. The study of such hypersonic shocks in the laboratory, under controlled conditions, is of primary interest to understand the physics at play and also to check the ability of numerical simulations to reproduce the experimental results. In this context, we conducted, at the Prague Asterix Laser System facility (PALS), the first experiments dedicated to the study of two counter-propagating radiative shocks propagating at non-equal speeds up to 25-50 km/s in noble gases at pressures ranging between 0.1 and 0.6 bar. These experiments highlighted the interaction between the two radiative precursors. This interaction is qualitatively but not quantitatively described by 1D simulations. Preliminary results obtained with XUV spectroscopy leading to the estimation of shock temperature and ion charge of the plasma are also presented.

Expanding laser plasmas, produced by high energy laser radiation, possess both high thermal and magnetic field energy density. Characterization of such plasma is challenging but needed for understanding of its physical behaviour. Among all standard experimental techniques for plasma diagnostics, classical interferometry is one of the most convenient, informative and accurate. Attempts to extract more information from each single laser shot have led to development of complex interferometry, which under certain processing allows to reconstruct both plasma electron density and magnetic field strength distributions using just one data object. However, the increase in complexity and universality of the diagnostics requires a more detailed analysis of the extracted values and their accuracy.This work focuses on axisymmetric interaction geometry. We present general analysis, starting from the basic principles and trace main error sources, finally ending up with plasma density and magnetic field distributions with the derived error bars. Use of synthetic profiles makes the analysis universal, though we present an example with real experimental data in the Appendix., Comment: 24 pages, 28 figures

The interaction of supersonic laser-generated plasma jets with a secondary gas target was studied experimentally. The plasma parameters of the jet, and the resulting shock, were characterized using a combination of multi-frame interferometry/shadowgraphy, and X-ray diagnostics, allowing for a detailed study of their structure and evolution. The velocity was obtained with an X-ray streak camera, and filtered X-ray pinhole imaging was used to infer the electron temperature of the jet and shock. The topology of the ambient plasma density was found to have a significant effect on the jet and shock formation, as well as on their radiation characteristics. The experimental results were compared with radiation hydrodynamic simulations, thereby providing further insights into the underlying physical processes of the jet and shock formation and evolution.

The chemical environments of young planets are assumed to be largely influenced by impacts of bodies lingering on unstable trajectories after the dissolution of the protoplanetary disk. We explore the chemical consequences of impacts within the context of reducing planetary atmospheres dominated by carbon monoxide, methane and molecular nitrogen. A terawatt high-power laser was selected in order to simulate the airglow plasma and blast wave surrounding the impactor. The chemical results of these experiments are then applied to a theoretical atmospheric model. The impact simulation results in substantial volume mixing ratios within the reactor of 5% hydrogen cyanide (HCN), 8% acetylene (C$_2$H$_2$), 5% cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) and 1% ammonia (NH$_3$). These yields are combined with estimated impact rates for the Early Earth to predict surface boundary conditions for an atmospheric model. We show that impacts might have served as sources of energy that would have led to steady-state surface quantities of 0.4% C$_2$H$_2$, 400 ppm HCN and 40 ppm NH$_3$. We provide simulated transit spectra for an Earth-like exoplanet with this reducing atmosphere during and shortly after eras of intense impacts. We predict that acetylene is as observable as other molecular features on exoplanets with reducing atmospheres that have recently gone through their own `Heavy Bombardments', with prominent features at 3.05 $\mu$m and 10.5 $\mu$m., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal
