Soliton gases represent large random soliton ensembles in physical systems that display integrable dynamics at the leading order. We report hydrodynamic experiments in which we investigate the interaction between two "beams" or "jets" of soliton gases having nearly identical amplitudes but opposite velocities of the same magnitude. The space-time evolution of the two interacting soliton gas jets is recorded in a 140-m long water tank where the dynamics is described at leading order by the focusing one-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Varying the relative initial velocity of the two species of soliton gas, we change their interaction strength and we measure the macroscopic soliton gas density and velocity changes due to the interaction. Our experimental results are found to be in good quantitative agreement with predictions of the spectral kinetic theory of soliton gas despite the presence of perturbative higher-order effects that break the integrability of the wave dynamics.

We investigate the statistics of rogue waves occurring in the inverse cascade of surface gravity wave turbulence. In such statistically homogeneous, stationary and isotropic wave fields, low-frequency waves are generated by nonlinear interactions rather than directly forced by a wave maker. This provides a laboratory realization of arguably the simplest nonlinear sea state, in which long-time acquisitions are performed and compared with theoretical models. The analysis of thousands of rogue waves reveals that some of their properties crucially depend on four-wave resonant interactions, large crests being for instance more likely than predicted by second-order models.

The Galilean transformation is a universal operation connecting the coordinates of a dynamical system, which move relative to each other with a constant speed. In the context of exact solutions of the universal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), inducing a Galilean velocity (GV) to the pulse involves a frequency shift to satisfy the symmetry of the wave equation. As such, the Galilean transformation has been deemed to be not applicable to wave groups in nonlinear dispersive media. In this paper, we demonstrate that in a wave tank generated Galilean transformed envelope and Peregrine solitons show clear variations from their respective pure dynamics on the water surface. The type of deviations depends on the sign of the GV and can be captured by the modified NLSE or the Euler equations. Moreover, we show that positive Galilean-translated envelope soliton pulses exhibit self-modulation. While designated GS and wave steepness values expedite multi-soliton dynamics, the strong focusing of such higher-order coherent waves inevitably lead to the generation of supercontinua as a result of soliton fission. We anticipate that kindred experimental and numerical studies might be implemented in other dispersive wave guides governed by nonlinearity.

Peregrine soliton (PS) is widely regarded as a prototype nonlinear structure capturing properties of rogue waves that emerge in the nonlinear propagation of unidirectional wave trains. As an exact breather solution of the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions, the PS can be viewed as a soliton on finite background, i.e. a nonlinear superposition of a soliton and a monochromatic wave. A recent mathematical work showed that both nonzero boundary conditions and solitonic content are not pre-requisites for the PS occurrence. Instead, it has been demonstrated that PS can emerge locally, as an asymptotic structure arising from the propagation of an arbitrary large decaying pulse, independently of its solitonic content. This mathematical discovery has changed the widely accepted paradigm of the solitonic nature of rogue waves by enabling the PS to emerge from a partially radiative or even completely solitonless initial data. In this work, we realize the mathematically predicted universal mechanism of the local PS emergence in a water tank experiment with a particular aim to control the point of the PS occurrence in space-time by imposing an appropriately chosen initial chirp. By employing the inverse scattering transform for the synthesis of the initial data, we are able to engineer a localized wave packet with a prescribed solitonic and radiative content. This enabled us to control the position of the emergence of the rogue wave by adjusting the inverse scattering spectrum. The proposed method of the nonlinear spectral engineering is found to be robust to higher-order nonlinear effects inevitable in realistic wave propagation conditions.

The concept of Nonlinear dispersion relation (NDR) is used in various fields of Physics (nonlinear optics, hydrodynamics, hydroelasticity, mechanics, quantum optics, plasma physics,...) to characterize fundamental phenomena induced by nonlinearity such as wave frequency shift or turbulence. Nonlinear random waves described by the onedimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (1DNLSE) exhibit a remarkable form of turbulence called "integrable turbulence" where solitons play a key role. Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to the NDR of such universal wave systems up to a very recent theoretical study. Here, by using an original strategy, we report the accurate measurement of NDR of the slowly varying envelop of the waves in one-dimensional deep water waves experiments. We characterize precisely the frequency shift and the broadening of the NDR, which interestingly reveals the presence of solitons and of high order effects. Soliton gases represent large random soliton ensembles in physical systems that display integrable dynamics at the leading order. Despite significant theoretical developments and observational evidence of ubiquity of soliton gases in fluids and optical media their controlled experimental realization has been missing. We report the first controlled synthesis of a dense soliton gas in deep-water surface gravity waves using the tools of nonlinear spectral theory (inverse scattering transform (IST)) for the one-dional focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The soliton gas is experimentally generated in a one-dimensional water tank where we demonstrate that we can control and measure the density of states, i. e. the probability density function parametrizing the soliton gas in the IST spectral phase space. Nonlinear spectral analysis of the generated hydrodynamic soliton gas reveals that the density of states slowly changes under the influence of perturbative higher-order effects that break the integrability of the wave dynamics.

This paper proposes an efficient potential and viscous flow decomposition method for wave-structure interaction simulation with single-phase potential flow wave models and two-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers. The potential part - represents the incident waves - is solved with spectral wave models; the viscous part - represents the complementary perturbation on the incident waves - is solved with the CFD solver. This combination keeps the efficiency and accuracy of potential theory on water waves and the advantage of two-phase CFD solvers on complex flows (wave breaking, flow separation, etc.). The decomposition strategy is called Spectral Wave Explicit Navier-Stokes Equations (SWENSE), originally proposed for single-phase CFD solvers. Firstly, this paper presents an extension of the SWENSE method for two-phase CFD solvers. Secondly, an accurate and efficient method to interpolate potential flow results obtained with the High Order Spectral (HOS) wave model on CFD mesh is proposed. The method is able to reduce the divergence error of the interpolated velocity field to meet the CFD solver's needs without reprojection. Implemented within OpenFOAM, these methods are tested by three convincing verification, validation and application cases, considering incident wave propagation, high-order loads on a vertical cylinder in regular waves, and a Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) buoy in both regular and irregular waves. Speed-ups between 1.71 and 4.28 are achieved with the test cases. The wave models and the interpolation method are released open-source to the public.

We report water wave experiments performed in a long tank where we consider the evolution of nonlinear deep-water surface gravity waves with the envelope in the form of a large-scale rectangular barrier. Our experiments reveal that, for a range of initial parameters, the nonlinear wave packet is not disintegrated by the Benjamin-Feir instability but exhibits a specific, strongly nonlinear modulation, which propagates from the edges of the wavepacket towards the center with finite speed. Using numerical tools of nonlinear spectral analysis of experimental data we identify the observed envelope wave structures with focusing dispersive dam break flows, a peculiar type of dispersive shock waves recently described in the framework of the semi-classical limit of the 1D focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (1D-NLSE). Our experimental results are shown to be in a good quantitative agreement with the predictions of the semi-classical 1D-NLSE theory. CN-Stream is a library for the computation of nonlinear regular ocean waves. The library is developed in order to be easily integrated with wave generation models in CFD solvers. It is based on the stream function theory and provides significant improvements regarding the applicability of the method for waves close to breaking (in deep or shallow water) compared to the classical implementation of Rienecker and Fenton [26]. The complete description of the wave field is available, including the free-surface evolution and the wave kinematics in the fluid domain. Wave generation solvers using Higher Order Spectral Method (HOS) have been validated and developed over the years. HOS solves nonlinear wave propagation in open sea (HOS-Ocean) and in numerical wave tank (HOS-NWT) with low computation time comparing with other nonlinear solvers. HOS solvers are released as open-source codes under the terms of GNU General Public Licence (GPLv3). Nonlinear irregular wave generation in computational fluids dynamic (CFD) solvers becomes important recently in naval fiels to better estimate the loads on offshore structure. The conventional linear superposition methods imply a long computational time for wave generation and the simulation is made almost impossible without having enough computational power. And if the method is based on linear wave theory, there is also question on occurence of nonlinear phenomenon and the interaction between waves as the simulation goes. Therefore dedicated nonlinear wave solvers with high computational speed are needed. Grid2Grid is developed as a wrapper program of HOS to generate wave fields from the results of HOS computation. Grid2Grid reconstructs wave fields of HOS with inverse fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) and uses a quick spline module, the nonlinear wave fields can be fastly reconstructed for arbitrary simulation time and space. The nonlinear wave simulation is then possible for a particular position and time where specific non linear phenomenon occur.
