1. IPv6 Bitcoin-Certified Addresses

Abstract

A pivotal feature of IPv6 is its plug-and-play capability that enables hosts to integrate seamlessly into networks. In the absence of a trusted authority or security infrastructure, the challenge for hosts is generating their own address and verifying ownership of others. Cryptographically Generated Addresses (CGA) solves this problem by binding IPv6 addresses to hosts' public keys to prove address ownership. CGA generation involves solving a cryptographic puzzle similar to Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work (PoW) to deter address spoofing. Unfortunately, solving the puzzle often causes undesirable address generation delays, which has hindered the adoption of CGA. In this paper, we present Bitcoin-Certified Addresses (BCA), a new technique to bind IPv6 addresses to hosts' public keys. BCA reduces the computational cost of generating addresses by using the PoW computed by Bitcoin nodes to secure the binding. Compared to CGA, BCA provides better protection against spoofing attacks and improves the privacy of hosts. Due to the decentralized nature of the Bitcoin network, BCA avoids reliance on a trusted authority, similar to CGA. Abstract

BackgroundInterest is emerging regarding the role of blood biomarkers in acute stroke. The aim of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility of biomarker acquisition in suspected acute stroke, using modern ultrasensitive immunoassay techniques, and explore their potential usefulness for stroke diagnosis and management.MethodsIn 62 patients with suspected acute stroke, blood samples were prospectively obtained upon arrival and prior to neuroimaging. Serum levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP) and neurofilament light chain (sNfL) were analyzed using a single molecule array (SIMOA®) method, according to time of symptom onset, neuroimaging, and final diagnosis.ResultsAcute ischemic stroke (AIS) was diagnosed in 35 patients, 10 with large-vessel occlusion (LVO). The remaining were diagnosed with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) (n = 12), transient ischemic attack (n = 4), and stroke mimics (n = 11). Median (IQR) sGFAP levels were significantly higher in ICH (2,877.8 [1,002.1–10,402.5] pg./mL) compared to others diagnoses. In AIS, GFAP levels appear to increase with longer delays since symptom onset and were higher in patients with more extensive ischemic changes on baseline CT (ASPECTS ≤7) than those without, particularly in LVO stroke. NfL values were similar across groups.ConclusionIn acute stroke, serum GFAP levels show potential as an adjunct tool for the distinction between ICH and AIS. Specific to AIS, GFAP may also offer insight into time from onset, and extent of ischemic tissue injury on neuroimaging, particularly in LVO stroke. These preliminary findings merit further study.

Abstract

The NA60 experiment has studied low-mass muon pair production in proton-nucleus collisions with a system of Be, Cu, In, W, Pb and U targets, using a 400 GeV proton beam at the CERN SPS. The transverse momentum spectra of the $\rho/\omega$ and $\phi$ mesons are measured in the full $p_\mathrm{T}$ range accessible, from $p_\mathrm{T} = 0$ up to 2 GeV/$c$. The nuclear dependence of the production cross sections of the $\eta$, $\omega$ and $\phi$ mesons has been found to be consistent with the power law $\sigma_\mathrm{pA} \propto \mathrm{A}^\alpha$, with the $\alpha$ parameter increasing as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$ for all the particles, and an approximate hierarchy $\alpha_\eta \approx \alpha_\phi > \alpha_\omega$. The cross section ratios $\sigma_\eta/\sigma_\omega$, $\sigma_\rho/\sigma_\omega$ and $\sigma_\phi/\sigma_\omega$ have been studied as a function of the size A of the production target, and an increase of the $\eta$ and $\phi$ yields relative to the $\omega$ is observed from p-Be to p-U collisions.

Abstract

Abstract Autophagy is a protein degradative process important for normal cellular metabolism. It is apparently used also by cells to eliminate invading pathogens. Interestingly, many pathogens have learned to subvert the cell’s autophagic process. Here, we review the interactions between viruses and cells in regards to cellular autophagy. Using findings from hepatitis B virus and human retroviruses, HIV-1 and HTLV-1, we discuss mechanisms used by viruses to usurp cellular autophagy in ways that benefit viral replication.

Acantholytic dyskeratotic acanthoma is a rare variant of epidermal acanthoma characterized pathologically by the presence of acantholysis and dyskeratosis. Few cases have been reported until now, one of them in a heart-transplant patient. We present here a new case of this rare lesion that developed in a liver-transplant patient and review the salient features of this uncommon condition.

Abstract

BackgroundLimited research exists regarding the impact of neuroimaging on endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) decisions for late-window cases of large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke.ObjectiveT0 assess whether perfusion CT imaging: (1) alters the proportion of recommendations for EVT, and (2) enhances the reliability of EVT decision-making compared with non-contrast CT and CT angiography.MethodsWe conducted a survey using 30 patients drawn from an institutional database of 3144 acute stroke cases. These were presented to 29 Canadian physicians with and without perfusion imaging. We used non-overlapping 95% confidence intervals and difference in agreement classification as criteria to suggest a difference between the Gwet AC1 statistics (κG).ResultsThe percentage of EVT recommendations differed by 1.1% with or without perfusion imaging. Individual decisions changed in 21.4% of cases (11.3% against EVT and 10.1% in favor). Inter-rater agreement (κG) among the 29 raters was similar between non-perfusion and perfusion CT neuroimaging (κG=0.487; 95% CI 0.327 to 0.647 and κG=0.552; 95% CI 0.430 to 0.675). The 95% CIs overlapped with moderate agreement in both. Intra-rater agreement exhibited overlapping 95% CIs for all 28 raters. κGwas either substantial or excellent (0.81–1) for 71.4% (20/28) of raters in both groups.ConclusionsDespite the minimal difference in overall EVT recommendations with either neuroimaging protocol one in five decisions changed with perfusion imaging. Regarding agreement we found that the use of automated CT perfusion images does not significantly impact the reliability of EVT decisions for patients with late-window LVO.

Abstract

Background When standard endovascular thrombectomy techniques fail to achieve a successful recanalization, it is often necessary to use rescue therapies (RTs). RTs are more commonly used in basilar artery occlusions and conventionally thought to represent “a last resort option.” We sought to study the outcomes of basilar artery occlusion patients who received RT, and further hypothesize that the number of instrumental passes before initiation of RT may be associated with increased risk for poor clinical outcomes. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of the ETIS (“Endovascular Treatment in Ischemic Stroke”) registry. Our primary analysis included 277 patients who underwent thrombectomy for basilar artery occlusion, of whom 74 patients (26.7%) who received RT, defined as the use of intra‐arterial drugs, angioplasty, or stenting. Primary outcome measures included successful or complete reperfusion (final modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction ≥2b or 3), functional independence (modified Rankin scale of 0–2), and mortality at 3 months. Results RT patients were more likely to have an atherosclerotic cause than non‐RT patients (46/74 [62.2%] versus 38/203 [18.7%]), were more likely to die (42/74 [56.8%] versus 73/203 [36.0%]), and were less likely to achieve functional independence (12/74 [16.2%] versus 84/203 [41.4%]). In the RT cohort, 17 of 74 patients (23.0%) had 1 pass before RT initiation, and 8 of 17 (47.1%) achieved a modified Rankin scale score of 0 to 2 at 3 months, with a mortality rate of 23.5% (4/17). The chance of achieving good clinical outcome decreased with each additional pass, whereas mortality increased. The odds of mortality at 3 months were highest in the >3 passes group, with an odds ratio of 10.29 (95% CI, 2.42–43.81) compared with 1 pass. None of the 25 patients with >3 passes before RT achieved 3‐month functional independence. Conclusions There is a significant correlation between the number of passes before initiation of RT and 3‐month clinical outcomes in basilar artery occlusion patients.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:Oral anticoagulation (OAC) prevents stroke in atrial fibrillation, yet a residual stroke risk remains. In this single-center retrospective analysis of acute ischemic stroke patients despite OAC, suboptimal OAC treatment is common (30%: inappropriate dosing (17%); patient non-adherence (13%)). Other causes of stroke included OAC interruption (14.5%), a competing stroke mechanism (11.0%), and undetermined breakthrough stroke in 44.5%. Overall, easily modifiable causes of ischemic stroke despite OAC are common. Accordingly, strategies to improve treatment compliance, including appropriate dosing along with guideline-based risk factor and periprocedural OAC management, should be emphasized to improve secondary stroke prevention in this patient population.

Abstract

The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has studied $\phi$ meson production in In-In collisions at 158A GeV via both the $K^+K^-$ and the $\mu^+\mu^-$ decay channels. The yields and inverse slope parameters of the $m_T$ spectra observed in the two channels are compatible within errors, different from the large discrepancies seen in Pb-Pb collisions between the hadronic (NA49) and dimuon (NA50) decay channels. Possible physics implications are discussed.

Abstract

The NA60 experiment has studied J/psi production in p-A collisions at 158 and 400 GeV, at the CERN SPS. Nuclear effects on the J/psi yield have been estimated from the A-dependence of the production cross section ratios sigma_{J/psi}^{A}/sigma_{J/psi}^{Be} (A=Al, Cu, In, W, Pb, U). We observe a significant nuclear suppression of the J/psi yield per nucleon-nucleon collision, with a larger effect at lower incident energy, and we compare this result with previous observations by other fixed-target experiments. An attempt to disentangle the different contributions to the observed suppression has been carried out by studying the dependence of nuclear effects on x_2, the fraction of nucleon momentum carried by the interacting parton in the target nucleus., Comment: NA60 Collaboration, accepted for publication by Phys. Abstract

NA60 measured dimuon production in p-A and In-In collisions at the CERN SPS. This paper presents a high statistics measurement of $\phi$ meson production in In-In collisions at 158 AGeV. Both the transverse momentum, rapidity, decay angular distributions and the absolute yield were measured as a function of centrality. The results are compared to previous measurements in order to shed light on the long standing $\phi$ puzzle. Abstract

The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has measured muon pairs with unprecedented precision in 158A GeV In-In collisions. A strong excess of pairs above the known sources is observed in the whole mass region 0.2 rho -> mu+mu- annihilation. The associated rho spectral function shows a strong broadening, but essentially no shift in mass. For M>1 GeV, the excess is found to be prompt, not due to enhanced charm production, with pronounced differences to Drell-Yan pairs. The slope parameter Teff associated with the transverse momentum spectra rises with mass up to the rho, followed by a sudden decline above. The rise for M<1 GeV is consistent with radial flow of a hadronic emission source. The seeming absence of significant flow for M>1 GeV and its relation to parton-hadron duality is discussed in detail, suggesting a dominantly partonic emission source in this region. A comparison of the data to the present status of theoretical modeling is also contained. The accumulated empirical evidence, including also a Planck-like shape of the mass spectra at low pT and the lack of polarization, is consistent with a global interpretation of the excess dimuons as thermal radiation. Abstract

Abstract The ALICE Collaboration has measured the energy dependence of exclusive photoproduction of $$\mathrm {J}/\psi $$ J/ψ vector mesons off proton targets in ultra–peripheral p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $$\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$$ sNN=5.02 TeV. The e$$^+$$ + e$$^-$$ - and $$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$ μ+μ- decay channels are used to measure the cross section as a function of the rapidity of the $$\mathrm {J}/\psi $$ J/ψ in the range $$-2.5< y < 2.7$$ -2.5

Abstract

We present the first measurements of femtoscopic correlations between the KS0 and K± particles in pp collisions at s=7 TeV measured by the ALICE experiment. The observed femtoscopic correlations are consistent with final-state interactions proceeding solely via the a0(980) resonance. The extracted kaon source radius and correlation strength parameters for KS0K− are found to be equal within the experimental uncertainties to those for KS0K+. Results of the present study are compared with those from identical-kaon femtoscopic studies also performed with pp collisions at s=7 TeV by ALICE and with a KS0K± measurement in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV. Combined with the Pb–Pb results, our pp analysis is found to be compatible with the interpretation of the a0(980) having a tetraquark structure instead of that of a diquark.

Abstract

In this Letter, the ALICE Collaboration presents the first measurements of the charged-particle multiplicity density, dNch/dη, and total charged-particle multiplicity, Nchtot, in Xe–Xe collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair of sNN=5.44TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of collision centrality over a wide pseudorapidity range of −3.5
