The state of technology relative to the Tethered Satellite System (TSS) was reviewed. The technology areas which could benefit from the TSS were defined. To support TSS design studies it is necessary to develop tether dynamic model computer codes for definition of mission and tether requirements. Present major codes are very elaborate, expensive to run, and not very user friendly. An additional technology concern was related to the manufacturing of tethers. The development of complex tethers (nonconducting-taper/double taper long 100 km, conducting-embedded conduction, fiber optics, and superconducting) and their applications to space stations requires the development of manufacturing capabilities for both Earth-based as well as space-based systems.

A variable thermal control coating (modified chromic acid anodizing) has been developed to meet the needs for the thermal control of spacecraft. This coating, with controlled variable ranges of 0.10 to 0.72 thermal emittance and 0.2 to 0.4 solar absorptance, allows the user to select any value of thermal emittance and solar absorptance within the range specified and obtain both values within + or - 0.02. Preliminary solar stability has shown less than 15 percent degradation over 2000 hours of vacuum solar exposure. The technique has been determined to be sensitive to the parameters of voltage, rate of voltage application, time, temperature, acid concentration, and material pretreatment.

A magnetic mass spectrometer is currently being adapted to the Space Shuttle Orbiter to provide repeated high altitude atmosphere data to support in situ rarefied flow aerodynamics research, i.e., in the high velocity, low density flight regime. The experiment, called Shuttle Upper Atmosphere Mass Spectrometer (SUMS), is the first attempt to design mass spectrometer equipment for flight vehicle aerodynamic data extraction. The SUMS experiment will provide total freestream atmospheric quantitites, principally total mass density, above altitudes at which conventional pressure measurements are valid. Experiment concepts, the expected flight profile, tradeoffs in the design of the total system and flight data reduction plans are discussed. Development plans are based upon a SUMS first flight after the Orbiter initial development flights.

Anodizing technique allows independent selection of coating thermal emittance and solar absorption. Process has three phases: initial material processing, which prepares material and establishes initial values of emittance and absorption; anodizing with chromic acid solution, which determines final values; and material postprocessing. Stability tests show less than 15 percent coating degradation over 2,000 hour solar exposure.

A highly simplified, alternate approach to the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer has been developed. In this approach, a low temperature trap replaces the entire GC portion of the combined GC-MS instrument and no carrier gas is necessary. Using the cold trap technique, the sample is first passed into a chilled trap. Depending on the trap temperature, many compounds are condensed or trapped out (most at -196 C). Those which are not, such as helium, neon, and nitrogen, pass through the trap directly into the spectrometer for analysis. Then the trap is programmed to increase in temperature at an appropriate rate. This allows evaporation (or sublimation) of the trapped materials according to the specific vapor pressure characteristics of the compound, providing some temporal separation between constituents. These partially resolved components are directed to the MS as they evolve from the trap.
