5. Elongational flow mixing: A novel innovative approach to elaborate high-performance SBR-based elastomer compounds

Abstract

A dominant extensional flow mixing device (Reactor/Elongational Flow MiXer; RMX) was used to prepare styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica nanocomposites with high physical performances. First, the processing parameters such as the temperature, number of mixing cycles, and sequenced mixing protocol have been optimized. Thereafter, the morphological structure of different compounds was probed using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The prediction of the flow properties during processing of uncured materials were modeled using the dynamic and capillary rheometry. The thermo-mechanical sweep behavior of the as-prepared silica-filled SBR specimens was also investigated. By comparing with SBR/silica compounds prepared by the internal mixer, it was proven that elongational flow mixing process can not only reduce mixing energy consumption but also make the manufactured parts to have high state of dispersion, excellent viscoelastic properties, high extensional and yield stresses, and high elastic and rubbery moduli. This study highlights the potential of the elongational flow mixing as an innovative processing approach which is compatible with the industrial expectations for the fast manufacturing of high-performance silica and carbon black filled rubber compounds.

Abstract

In this paper, different types of polyurethane foams (PUR) having various chemical compositions have been produced with a specific density to monitor the microstructure as much as possible. The foam may have a preferential orientation in the cell structure. The cellular polyurethane tends to have stubborn, typical cellular systems with strong overlap reversibility. Free expansion under atmospheric pressure enables formulas to grow until they are refined. Moreover, the physicochemical characterization of the developed foams was carried out. They later are described by apparent density, Shore hardness, Raman spectroscopy analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, FTIR, TGA, DSC, and compression tests. The detailed structural characterization was used by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an optical microscope (MO) to visualize the alveolar polymer’s semi-opened cells, highlighting the opened-cell morphology and chemical irregularities. Polyurethane foams with different structural variables have a spectrum characterization that influences the phase separation and topography of polyurethane foam areas because their bonding capability with hydrogen depends on chain extender nature. These studies may aid in shock absorption production; a methodology of elaboration and characterization of filled polyurethane foams is proposed.

42. Thermodynamics of Tri- and Tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2Amine Polyaddition: A Theoretical Perspective

Abstract

The thermodynamics of newly designed tri- and tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2 monomers reacting with several diamines used as curing agents to form epoxy/amine thermosets was studied. The ability of each epoxy/amine combination to induce cross-linking both through the substitution of multiple epoxy groups and through multiple additions to a single amine was investigated. Through an increased understanding of the thermodynamics of epoxy–amine polymerization in complex polyepoxy-ILs, it is possible to more thoroughly understand the factors affecting the reactivity in these complex systems. These calculations showed that while each possible epoxy–amine combination was exergonic to both forms of cross-linking, the degree to which both amines-induced cross-linking and epoxy-induced cross-linking was favored varied between epoxy–amine combinations. Thermodynamic results obtained using density functional theory were experimentally validated through differential scanning calorimetry results, wherein similar trends were noted between theory and experiment. Among the trends noted in amines–epoxy combinations tested, tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2/PACM (i.e., a cycloaliphatic diamine) was found to be a prime candidate for amine cross-linking, with the addition of a second epoxy to a single amine group being notably the most negative of all epoxy–amine combinations at −77.6 kJ mol–1. While in the case of epoxy cross-linking, the aliphatic polyetheramine denoted Jeffamine-D230-containing systems were found to be the most exergonic, with additions of primary amines to triepoxyimidazolium and tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2 averaging −86.9 kJ mol–1. Interaction energy analysis indicated that the aromatic amine named sulfanilamide is the most favorable to engage in reactions due to having the most negative interaction energies with already highly substituted epoxy monomers. These results can be used to adjust the cross-linking possibilities of tri- and tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2/amine polymerization and give insight into the predominant cross-linking reactions in these unique systems.
