Abstract

Childhood obesity is a predictor of adult obesity and has its roots in the pre-pregnancy or pregnancy period. This review presents an overview of the prenatal risk factors for childhood obesity, which were categorized into 2 groups: biological risk factors (maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain, diabetes in pregnancy, and caesarean section), and environmental and behavioural risk factors (maternal smoking and exposure to obesogens, maternal dietary patterns, maternal intestinal microbiome and antibiotics exposure, and maternal psychosocial stress). Identifying modifiable predisposing prenatal factors for obesity will inform further development of inventions to prevent obesity over the life course, and future directions for research and intervention are discussed. L'obesite chez l'enfant est un facteur predictif de l'obesite chez l'adulte ayant ses racines dans les periodes de grossesse ou precedant la grossesse. Cet article de synthese presente un apercu des facteurs de risque prenataux pour l'obesite chez l'enfant, que nous avons categorises en 2 groupes : facteurs de risque biologiques (indice de masse corporelle maternel avant la grossesse, prise de poids pendant la grossesse, diabete de grossesse, ainsi que cesarienne) et facteurs de risque environnementaux et comportementaux (tabagisme chez la mere et exposition aux << obesogenes >>, habitudes alimentaires de la mere, microbiome intestinal maternel et prise d'antibiotiques, ainsi que stress psychosocial chez la mere). 22. Arguments at Mealtime and Child Energy Intake

Abstract

Objective: To examine how arguments at mealtimes relate to children's daily energy intake. Design: A cross-sectional study using data obtained through the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development 1998-2010 (QLSCD), a representative sample of children born in 1998, in the province of Quebec, Canada. Setting: Face-to-face interviews, questionnaires, and 24-hour dietary recall interviews addressed to children's parents. Participants: One thousand five hundred forty-nine 4-year-old children who participated in a nutrition substudy. Main Outcome Measure: Children's energy intakes were measured through a 24-hour dietary recall interview administered to parents by trained nutritionists, in the children's homes. Analysis: The main associations were examined through chi-square tests of independence and through multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: The adjusted odds for consuming a high daily energy intake was 2.5 (95% confidence interval: 1.3-4.9) in children who were never exposed to arguments (between parents and children) at mealtimes, in comparison to children who were often or always exposed to arguments. Conclusions and Implications: Mealtimes that are free of arguments, specifically between parents and children, appear to associate with high daily energy intakes in children, even after controlling for other factors, including a child's level of physical activity, eating in front of the television, mother's educational level, and number of overweight parents, among others. 26. Psychosocial Determinants of the Early Introduction of Complementary Foods

Abstract

Infant feeding guidelines recommend exclusive breast-feeding to the age of 6 months; complementary foods should not be introduced before this age. This study examined parent and infant psychosocial determinants of the early introduction of complementary foods. Analyses were conducted on a representative sample of children born in Quebec (Canada) in 1998 (n = 2,223), surveyed through the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. Of the children, 61% received complementary foods prior to the age of 4 months. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed the early introduction of complementary foods was more likely when mothers were younger, less educated, of lower socioeconomic class, and when they felt they had little influence on their child's development. Higher parental confidence in caring for the infant was also associated with the early introduction of complementary foods (p [less than or equal] 0.05). Future research must carefully consider the psychosocial aspects involved in adhering to infant feeding guidelines. (Contains 3 tables.)

Abstract

Background Body mass index (BMI) shows strong continuity over childhood and adolescence and high childhood BMI is the strongest predictor of adult obesity. Genetic factors strongly contribute to this continuity, but it is still poorly known how their contribution changes over childhood and adolescence. Thus, we used the genetic twin design to estimate the genetic correlations of BMI from infancy to adulthood and compared them to the genetic correlations of height. Methods We pooled individual level data from 25 longitudinal twin cohorts including 38,530 complete twin pairs and having 283,766 longitudinal height and weight measures. The data were analyzed using Cholesky decomposition offering genetic and environmental correlations of BMI and height between all age combinations from 1 to 19 years of age. Results The genetic correlations of BMI and height were stronger than the trait correlations. For BMI, we found that genetic correlations decreased as the age between the assessments increased, a trend that was especially visible from early to middle childhood. In contrast, for height, the genetic correlations were strong between all ages. Age-to-age correlations between environmental factors shared by co-twins were found for BMI in early childhood but disappeared altogether by middle childhood. For height, shared environmental correlations persisted from infancy to adulthood. Conclusions Our results suggest that the genes affecting BMI change over childhood and adolescence leading to decreasing age-to-age genetic correlations. This change is especially visible from early to middle childhood indicating that new genetic factors start to affect BMI in middle childhood. Identifying mediating pathways of these genetic factors can open possibilities for interventions, especially for those children with high genetic predisposition to adult obesity.

Abstract

Labrador Inuit are an Indigenous People from northern Labrador, within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to European contact, Labrador Inuit were self-reliant. However, historical relationships with Christian missionaries, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Government of Canada impacted their relationship with food, access to food, and the physical and social health of Labrador Inuit. This review is based on the stages of colonization. It uses a critical dietetics lens to examine the extrinsic causes of nutrition and food security issues that resulted from colonization, and describes the interventions implemented to address them. Moreover, the review shows the resilience and adaptability of Labrador Inuit as they came full circle from self-sufficient Labrador Inuit in the 1500s, to sign the first Inuit land claim agreement in Canada and form the Nunatsiavut Government in 2005.
