1. Harmonic Frequency Locking and Tuning of Comb Frequency Spacing through Optical Injection

Abstract

We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that a slave laser injected with an optical frequency comb can undergo two distinct locking mechanisms, both of which decrease the output optical comb's frequency spacing. We report that, for certain detuning and relative injection strengths, slave laser relaxation oscillations can become undamped and lock to rational frequencies of the optical comb spacing, creating extra comb tones by nonlinear dynamics of the injected laser. We also study the frequency locking of the slave laser in between the injected comb lines, which add the slave laser's frequency to the comb. Our results demonstrate the effect of the alpha parameter, stability of the locked states, and indicate how the frequency of the relaxation oscillations affect both of these locking mechanisms. These optical locking mechanisms can be applied to regenerate or multiply optical combs.

Abstract

The discrete circle map is the archetypical example of a driven periodic system, showing a complex resonance structure under a change of the forcing frequency known as the devil's staircase. Adler's equation can be seen as the direct continuous equivalent of the circle map, describing locking effects in periodic systems with continuous forcing. This type of locking produces a single fundamental resonance tongue without higher order resonances, and a devil's staircase is not observed. We show that, with harmonically modulated forcing, nonlinear oscillations close to a Hopf bifurcation generically reproduce the devil's staircase even in the continuous case. Experimental results on a semiconductor laser driven by a modulated optical signal show excellent agreement with our theoretical predictions. The locking appears as a modulation of the oscillation amplitude as well as the angular oscillation frequency. Our results show that by proper implementation of an external drive, additional regions of stable frequency locking can be introduced in systems which originally show only a single Adler-type resonance tongue.

Abstract

Locomotor and balance disorders are major limitations for subjects with hemiparesis. The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test is a complex navigational task involving oriented walking and obstacle circumvention. We hypothesized that subjects with hemiparesis adopt a cautious gait during complex locomotor tasks. The primary aim was to compare spatio-temporal gait parameters, indicators of cautious gait, between the locomotor subtasks of the TUG (Go, Turn, Return) and a Straight-line walk in people with hemiparesis. Our secondary aim was to analyze the relationships between TUG performance and balance measures, compare spatio-temporal gait parameters between fallers and non-fallers, and identify the biomechanical determinants of TUG performance. Biomechanical parameters during the TUG and Straight-line walk were analyzed using a motion capture system. A repeated measures ANOVA and two stepwise ascending multiple regressions (with performance variables and biomechanical variables) were conducted. Gait speed, step length, and % single support phase (SSP) of the 29 participants were reduced during Turn compared to Go and Return and the Straight-line walk, and step width and % double support phase were increased. TUG performance was related to several balance measures. Turn performance (R2 = 63%) and Turn trajectory deviation followed by % SSP on the paretic side and the vertical center of mass velocity during Go (R2 = 71%) determined TUG performance time. People with hemiparesis adopt a cautious gait during complex navigation at the expense of performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The multi-disciplinary consortium for the CIRCULAR project focuses on how to develop the right conditions as well as the necessary technologies for the creation of new circular production systems, able to transform post-used products in very new products. As a part of this project, the development of the platform "Smart workshops for industry – Operation Management" will enable different work configurations using 4.0 technologies, focusing on digital resources -massive data management, IoT, etc.-, but also on physical systems -cobotic, virtual/augmented reality, exoskeleton, etc.-. Equipped with these new key technologies, the materialized supply chain will make it possible to test and adapt different production contexts -conventional linear production, circular production such as reuse, production under constraints of uncertainty, high variability, etc.-, from different approaches such as logistics, computational intelligence, r(c)obotics, automation but also through ergonomics and socio-technical framework, simultaneously. As a result, the platform will provide a central tool for researchers working on circular industrial systems.

20. Mutually coupled lasers in photonic integrated circuits

Abstract

Photonic integration has proven to be a technology with the potential to meet the seemingly unceasing increase in demand for information in an efficient and cost effective away. As the size of optical components shrinks certain challenges must be overcome. This thesis addresses the lack of an optical isolator in our integrated platform. Without this component any system requiring one will have an added feedback when realised in an integrated format. Specifically we deal with the process of injection locking lasers, which is a common process used in spectral filtering. Without the optical isolator the system becomes what is called mutually coupled. When dealing with mutually coupled lasers, the physical separation of the lasers is a key parameter. This system is well understood for large separations between the lasers (on the order of metres), limited studies are available for the short separation regime associated with photonic integration. In this thesis initial experiments into understanding mutually coupled lasers on a photonic integrated circuit will be shown, followed by a theoretical study. This study will focus on a rate equation based approach, using both ordinary and delay differential equation systems. Two different models will be studied, initially the single mode model of previous studies will be analysed, and following this, motivated by comparison of results with experimental results, a multi-mode model will be developed and studied.

Abstract

International audience; We will present two different types of luminescent nanoparticles (NPs) for the development of in vivo tracers, both excited in the biological window at around 800 nm: fluorescent molecular nanocrystals grown in the core of silicate NPs and luminescent oxide nanocrystals (garnet type doped with Nd3+) for nanothermometry. We will present first the elaboration and functionalization of hybrid organic-inorganic core-shell NPs to be used for two-photon deep tissue imaging of tumor vascularization. These core-shell NPs, which comprise an organic dye nanocrystal core (40-50 nm) surrounded by a silicate crust, are synthesized using an original spray-drying method. This process is based on the confined nucleation and growth of organic nanocrystals in silicate sol-gel NPs through the fast drying of sprayed droplets containing silicate oligomers, organic dye and solvent under a laminar air flux at 150-200 °C. This one-step process is monitored thanks to the both control of silicate network polycondensation and dye nanocrystallization, which occur simultaneously. We selected dyes arising from a specific molecular engineering (Y. Bretonnière and C. Andraud ENS-Lyon) exhibiting intense orange-red fluorescence emissions in the crystal-state to work close to the biological window. On the other hand, we developed a new synthesis method of garnet-type nanocrystals (Nd3+ doped YAG :Y3Al5O12) based on solvothermal process coupled with external pressure. We succeeded in obtaining nm-sized single-crystals in the range 30 to 200 nm. Their high crystalline quality allowed to observe intense Nd3+ luminescence in the near IR: excitation at 808 nm (4I9/2 → 4F5/2) with two emission bands at around 938 and 945 nm (4F3/2 → 4I9/2). The reproducible and significant evolution of luminescence intensity of these two emissions versus temperature, between 20 and 50°C, allows us to consider very promising developments for in vivo nanothermometry applications, in collaboration with the group of F. Vetrone (INRS and Univ. Montréal).

Abstract

A novel and efficient method for ligand exchange on core-shell nanocrystals is described. Carbon disulfide reacts with amine-containing ligand during the process and the resulting dithiocarbamates are strongly bound to the surface of quantum dots giving a secure coating of the nanoparticle.

Abstract

International audience; Silicon Carbide (SiC) components are accepted devices for high temperature and high efficiency applications. Normally-on SiC JFETs are now commercialized and will be used in future power converters. However, such devices are conducting when not driven with a sufficient negative voltage, which can lead to safety issues during start-up or abnormal operation of the gate driver. Therefore, it is needed to generate an auxiliary negative voltage to turn-off the JFET in order to protect the system. Moreover, insulation is necessary to cover all failure modes. Prior papers presented solution to protect such devices but no high temperature isolated solution were demonstrated. In this paper, a solution to protect JFETs used in a high temperature (200°C) voltage source inverter is proposed. The protection circuit, components selection and characterizations for high temperature application are detailed. Experimental results are provided and validate the design of the isolated normally-on protection circuit up to 200°C.

Abstract

International audience; The use of normally on Silicon Carbide (SiC) JFET devices poses the question of safety and reliability in Voltage Fed Inverter (VFI) applications. Indeed, when a JFET is not driven with a sufficient negative voltage, the JFET is conducting and the VFI may be short-circuited. Therefore, it is needed to generate a negative voltage to turn-off the JFET to protect the VFI in case of gate driver failure. The settling time of this negative voltage must be inferior to the power system constant time to reduce the rise time of the short-circuit current. In this paper, a solution to protect the JFET and the system is proposed. A circuit description of an innovative topology using a Forward-Flyback topology with Primary Side Sensing (PSS) technique and an Output Voltage Estimation based on the Time Constant Matching (OVETCM) is presented. Moreover, the converter protects the VFI for an input range from 3 V to 610 V and up to 150 °C. Experimental results are provided and validate the design of the safety system.

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports the design, fabrication and experimental performance of a 2kW, 20kHz, High Temperature, three-phase, all-SiC JFET Voltage Source Inverter (VSI). The inverter includes a specific JFET driver and a DC-link capacitor. All these elements have been validated over a wide temperature range, between 25°C and 200°C. The power device used, a 1200V, 15A, JFET from SiCED has been characterized up to 200°C. An innovative reliable protection circuit for normally-on devices is also presented and validated.

International audience; In this paper, the authors propose a solution to provide self protection in a normally-On JFET voltage fed inverter. The solution is a plug-in to an existing Gate driver. An overview of JFET Gate driving serves as an introduction to the problem of self protection of inverters using Normally-On devices.
