13. The Structure of Martian Magnetosphere at the Dayside Terminator Region as Observed on MAVEN Spacecraft

Abstract

We analyzed 44 passes of the MAVEN spacecraft through the magnetosphere, arranged by the angle between electric field vector and the projection of spacecraft position radius vector in the YZ plane in MSE coordinate system (${\theta}$ E ). All passes were divided into 3 angular sectors near 0{\deg}, 90{\deg} and 180{\deg} ${\theta}$ E angles in order to estimate the role of IMF direction in plasma and magnetic properties of dayside Martian magnetosphere. The time interval chosen was from January 17 through February 4, 2016 when MAVEN was crossing the dayside magnetosphere at SZA ~ 70{\deg}. Magnetosphere as the region with prevailing energetic planetary ions is always found between the magnetosheath and the ionosphere. 3 angular sectors of dayside interaction region in MSE coordinate system with different orientation of the solar wind electric field vector E = -1/c V x B showed that for each sector one can find specific profiles of the magnetosheath, the magnetic barrier and the magnetosphere. Plume ions originate in the northern MSE sector where motion electric field is directed from the planet. This electric field ejects magnetospheric ions leading to dilution of magnetospheric heavy ions population, and this effect is seen in some magnetospheric profiles. Magnetic barrier forms in front of the magnetosphere, and relative magnetic field magnitudes in these two domains vary. The average height of the boundary with ionosphere is ~530 km and the average height of the magnetopause is ~730 km. Abstract

The method of estimating the inertia radius relative to the vertical axis of the car is proposed. This allows a third to reduce the relative error of its definition. A refined formula for calculating the radius of inertia design with respect to the vertical axis of the car is proposed. The use of the proposed formula reduces the error of determining the radius of inertia from 21–27 % to 5 %, and the error of determining the inertia moment for the car from 46– 61 % to 10 %. A method for assessing the adequacy of the results of theoretical and experimental studies is proposed. The use of the method has shown that the refined formula for calculating the radius of inertia relative to the vertical axis of the car makes it possible to reduce the probability of mismatching the results up to three times.

Abstract

Abstract—The Tjörnes Transform Zone (TZ) is on the northern margin of Iceland, mostly in the shelf zone. It connects the Kolbeinsey spreading ridge and the Northern Rift Zone (RZ) of Iceland. The zone is complexly structured and comprises several heterochronous sections that evolved in various geodynamic conditions. The geodynamic conditions of the formation and evolution of the Tjörnes TZ were reconstructed by means of physical modelling. The models measured the thickness of the model lithosphere, displacement, and the overlapping between the spreading segments. Results of the modelling show that the Tjörnes TZ formed successively, in two stages. The first stage was the formation of the general configuration of the area of interaction of the extension centres of the Kolbeinsey Ridge and the Northern RZ of Iceland in the form of a small overlap of the spreading centres with a rotating block between them. At the second stage, one of the formed transtensional fault zones between the spreading centres became the feeder channel for a magma pulse of the Iceland Plume, which led to the formation of the Grímsey Oblique Rift (OR). Standing alone is the Húsavík-Flatey fault zone that might have formed under the influence of two at a time spreading segments, with the domination of the more magmatically active Northern Rift Zone.
