Machine unlearning aims to efficiently eliminate the influence of specific training data, known as the forget set, from the model. However, existing unlearning methods for Large Language Models (LLMs) face a critical challenge: they rely solely on negative feedback to suppress responses related to the forget set, which often results in nonsensical or inconsistent outputs, diminishing model utility and posing potential privacy risks. To address this limitation, we propose a novel approach called Alternate Preference Optimization (AltPO), which combines negative feedback with in-domain positive feedback on the forget set. Additionally, we introduce new evaluation metrics to assess the quality of responses related to the forget set. Extensive experiments show that our approach not only enables effective unlearning but also avoids undesirable model behaviors while maintaining overall model performance.

- Abstract
Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.

Empowerment deals with having a feeling of choice/control in changing situations by having tools to deal with the situation, so to not have the idea that one is vulnerable without controlling it. Empowerment is a widely used concept with variations in definitions (Pires et al., 2006). It often refers to exert some control and influence over decisions that affect one’s life (Amichai-Hamburger et al., 2008). It can refer to either a process or an outcome, or both. In general, we would like to explore to what extent people differ in terms of perceived control, trust, and concerns, and whether these are related to their demographics. In this study we use data from the ASCoR 25-year collaborative survey (https://osf.io/d958h/?view_only=bcff911460c540bd818c2ee54e0eda19).

18. Exploring The Use Of Two-Sided News Chatbots Among Conspiracy Thinkers

conspiracy thinking ,technology acceptance model ,chatbots ,Social and Behavioral Sciences - Abstract
Conspiracy theories have become mainstream in today’s media landscape. The creation of echo chambers on the internet has led to selective exposure to one-sided information, thereby causing polarisation in beliefs about important issues like climate change. It is important that people engage with all perspectives on a topic, but it is often hard to do so due to confirmation bias and preference-based algorithms. The study investigates factors that may influence the adoption and use of information chatbots among conspiracy thinkers for this purpose. To that end, the study employs the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explore whether chatbots can be used as a trustworthy news source to encourage conspiracy thinkers to consider all perspectives on a topic. The findings will be the first step in examining the use of automated chatbot technology in providing real-time solutions to the formation of echo chambers, which promote conspiracy theorising by polarising user opinions.

This project is a follow-up study to the project registered at https://osf.io/zxp2f. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the present study investigates whether people who believe in climate change conspiracy theories trust and intend to use balanced chatbots as sources of news. The present study resembles the original study in most aspects, except that this study is focused only on participants with conspiracy beliefs about climate change.

The present research investigates the possible acceptance of a balanced (2-sided) chatbot by individuals with conspiracy beliefs in an attempt to replicate and follow-up on the findings of the study by Dubey (2020) which explored the attitudes towards and behavioural intention to use a balanced chatbot among high and low believers of conspiracy theories. In accordance with the Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989) used in the previous study, we will examine the factors affecting the attitudes towards and intention to use a balanced chatbot among believers of COVID-19 related conspiracy theories.

With social media’s wide and fast reach, it is easy to share opinions, express agreements and disagreement, and even hold individuals accountable for unfair and immoral actions. Viral outrage against individuals posting sexist, racist, or other questionable content is commonplace, but it results in limited engagement beyond the digital domain. This could be because viral outrage threatens individuals’ perception of the status quo which causes them to defend the existing systems (system justification). This preregistration pertains to a pilot test for the study titled “System Justification in the Virtual World: Can Viral Outrage Lead to Collective Action?” In the present study, we pilot test two manipulations based on previous studies on a sample of Indian females (n = 30-70).

Communication ,Environmental Studies ,environmental communication ,Social and Behavioral Sciences - Abstract
The present study aims to understand the general environmental discourse on Twitter. We will use cluster analysis to determine the Twitter communities ('green bubbles') based on users’ online environmental behaviour (e.g., liking, sharing, and (re)posting environmental content as well as following specific individuals or organisations). Additionally, we will examine which topics are being discussed in these bubbles via topic modelling; the underlying narrative of these topics via manual content analysis; and the interactions between various bubbles via network analysis. We will also compare if the topics discussed in these green bubbles tend to be different (or similar) across the Global North and Global South.

The integration of an E-slot within the conventional microstrip patch antenna structure offers improved radiation characteristics and bandwidth. This research presents the design and analysis of a rectangular microstrip patch antenna with an E-slot. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at a specific frequency in the microwave range. The design process involves determining the dimensions of the rectangular patch, feedline, and E-slot to achieve the desired resonance frequency. The simulation and optimization are carried out using electromagnetic simulation software, considering the dielectric substrate properties and other relevant parameters. The E-slot is strategically placed within the patch structure to enhance the antenna's performance. It acts as an additional resonating element, contributing to increased bandwidth and improved radiation characteristics, such as gain and directivity. The integration of the E-slot modifies the current distribution on the patch, resulting in enhanced radiation properties. The performance of the proposed antenna is evaluated through various parameters, including return loss, radiation pattern, and bandwidth. Overall, the rectangular microstrip patch antenna with an E-slot presents a promising solution for achieving enhanced performance in terms of bandwidth and radiation characteristics. The proposed design opens up possibilities for further advancements in microstrip antenna technology, facilitating the development of an efficient and compact antenna structure for modern wireless applications.
Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.
