1. Robust entanglement measure for mixed quantum states

Abstract

We introduce an entanglement measure, the Modified Bloch Norm ($MBN$), for finite-dimensional bipartite mixed states, based on the improved Bloch matrix criteria. $MBN$ is demonstrated to be effective in analyzing the dynamics of bound entanglement--a valuable resource for quantum protocols where free entanglement may not be available. Through examples, we illustrate the applications of $MBN$ in accurately estimating the Entanglement Sudden Death (ESD) time and detecting behaviour such as the freezing of bound entanglement. Additionally, we show that the error rate for entanglement measured using state estimation from a limited number of measurement copies is significantly lower when using $MBN$ compared to negativity. Abstract

A fundamental longstanding problem in studying spin models is the efficient and accurate numerical simulation of the long-time behavior of larger systems. The exponential growth of the Hilbert space and the entanglement accumulation at long times pose major challenges for current methods. To address these issues, we employ the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) framework to simulate the many-body spin dynamics of the Heisenberg model in various settings, including the Ising and XYZ limits with different interaction ranges and random couplings. Benchmarks with analytical and exact numerical approaches show that ML-MCTDH accurately captures the time evolution of one- and two-body observables in both one- and two-dimensional lattices. A comparison of ML-MCTDH with the discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA) demonstrates that our approach excels in handling anisotropic models and consistently provides better results for two-point observables in all simulation instances. Our results indicate that the multilayer structure of ML-MCTDH is a promising numerical framework for handling the dynamics of generic many-body spin systems., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Research on microwave signal measurement techniques is risen, driven by the expanding urgent demands of wireless communication, global positioning systems, remote sensing and 6G networks. In stark contrast with traditional electronic-based realization, the implementations of microwave signal measurement systems based on integrated compact photonic chip have exhibited distinct advantages in high operation bandwidth, light weight, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, although numerous integrated microwave photonic signal measurement systems have been reported, measurement bandwidth of the majority of them is still below 30 GHz due to the bandwidth limitation of electro-optical modulators (EOMs). Furthermore, previous studies often are more focused on the measurement of one single parameter (typically the frequency) of microwave signals, which has hindered their practical application in complex situations. Here, an integrated photonic microwave multi-parameter measurement system composed of microwave frequency measurement module and microwave phase amplitude measurement module based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform is reported. Utilizing this system, not only the ultra-high bandwidth (up to 60GHz) of microwave frequency, phase and amplitude measurement with low root-mean-squares errors (450MHz, 3.43{\deg} and 1.64% of the measurement for frequency, phase and amplitude, respectively), but also the time-domain reconstruction of sinusoidal microwave signals is achieved. Abstract

In this contribution, we simulate, design, and experimentally demonstrate an integrated optical isolator based on spatiotemporal modulation in the thin-film lithium niobate on insulator waveguide platform. We used two cascaded travelling wave phase modulators for spatiotemporal modulation and a ring resonator as a wavelength filter to suppress the sidebands of the reverse propagating light. This enabled us to achieve an isolation of 27 dB. The demonstrated suppression of the reverse propagating light makes such isolators suitable for the integration with III-V laser diodes and Erbium doped gain sections in the thin-film lithium niobate on insulator waveguide platform., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

High efficiency and a compact footprint are desired properties for electro-optic modulators. In this paper, we propose, theoretically investigate and experimentally demonstrate a recirculating phase modulator, which increases the modulation efficiency by modulating the optical field several times in a non-resonant waveguide structure. The 'recycling' of light is achieved by looping the optical path that exits the phase modulator back and coupling it to a higher order waveguide mode, which then repeats its passage through the phase modulator. By looping the light back twice, we were able to demonstrate a recirculating phase modulator that requires nine times lower power to generate the same modulation index of a single pass phase modulator. This approach of modulation efficiency enhancement is promising for the design of advanced tunable electro optical frequency comb generators and other electro-optical devices with defined operational frequency bandwidths.

Abstract

Programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs), offering diverse signal processing functions within a single chip, are promising solutions for applications ranging from optical communications to artificial intelligence. While the scale and complexity of programmable PICs is increasing, the characterization, and thus calibration, of them becomes increasingly challenging. Here we demonstrate a phase retrieval method for programmable PICs using an on-chip fractional-delay reference path. The impulse response of the chip can be uniquely and precisely identified from only the insertion loss using a standard complex Fourier transform. We demonstrate our approach experimentally with a 4-tap finite-impulse-response chip. The results match well with expectations and verifies our approach as effective for individually determining the taps' weights without the need for additional ports and photodiodes.

Abstract

Among the most popular methods for diagnosing breast cancer in women is a biopsy, in which tissue is taken out and examined under a microscope via a pathologist to search for anomalies in the tissue. This method can be laborious, prone to mistakes, and yield inconsistent outcomes based on the pathologist's degree of experience. In this research, for detecting breast cancer tumors, an automated method based on histopathology images is used. With the proposed technique, a convolutional neural network (CNN) of the dimensions 152-layers is utilized for breast cancer histopathology image categorization called ResHist, which depends on residual learning. Furthermore, we construct a data augmentation strategy using affine transformation, image patch creation, and stain normalization to improve the accuracy of the designed model. Additionally, if data augmentation is used, this method obtains F1-score of 93.45% and an accuracy of 92.52%. For the purpose of classifying malignant and benign histological images, the suggested method performs better than the current approaches. Additionally, our research findings show that our method outperforms the pre-trained networks in the classifying the histopathological images, including ResNet152, ResNet50, Inception-v3, GoogleNet, VGG19, VGG16, and AlexNet. Abstract

Over the past two decades, there has been a surge of interest in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to enable low‐cost industrial mass manufacture of miniaturized optical systems while simultaneously improving performance and energy efficiency following the trajectory of electronics and large‐scale integration. An essential characteristic of any PIC lies in the ability of waveguides to efficiently confine light. The phenomenon of bound states in the continuum (BIC) shows promise in achieving confinement of light for modes that otherwise would suffer from high leakage losses, which can occur in many PIC platforms. In this contribution, the usefulness of operating near a BIC to achieve efficient second harmonic generation of ≈300% W−1 cm−2 in Silicon Nitride (SiN) loaded lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides without needing to either pole or etch the lithium niobate is experimentally demonstrated. The guided fundamental mode is phase matched at the telecom wavelength to a higher order mode at the second harmonic wavelength that is engineered as a bound state in the continuum to mitigate leakage losses. This demonstrates the promise of using BIC in weakly confining waveguides for nonlinear optical applications all while avoiding the poling process by engineering waveguide geometry.
