This study aimed to understand patients’ perceptions of the impact of alcohol use in the context of HIV care. Methods: The study design was a descriptive qualitative study of HIV positive individuals receiving antiretroviral treatment. The study involved four focus group discussions with male and female participants at a tertiary center, city clinic, and rural church. We employed convenience sampling and invited patients coming for their routine visits and medication refills to participate. Results: Participants had an awareness of both the direct and indirect effects of alcohol use. The direct effects related to the incompatibility of HIV medication and alcohol. The indirect effects related to the negative impact of alcohol on treatment adherence. Participants proffered reasons why HIV infected individuals on HIV treatment drink and felt that patients had to make a deliberate choice to stop drinking. Participants displayed some knowledge of interventions for drinking cessation and highlighted the use of pharmacological interventions to stop drinking. Participants indicated that they preferred HIV counselors to provide counseling services in view of the existing relationships that patients had with counselors. Conclusion: People living with HIV have adequate knowledge of the effects of alcohol use in the context of HIV treatment. Stigma and the time taken to engage in an alcohol use intervention appeared to be the main impediments to uptake. The current model of HIV treatment, based on trust with the HIV care team, and maintenance of this trust, could bolster the uptake of an intervention. Involvement of HIV patients in their treatment is necessary to improve treatment outcomes in the context of alcohol use. Keywords: alcohol use, HIV, impact, perceptions, Zimbabwe

Therefore, in the present study, the hydrophobic modification of low-molecular-weight polyethylenimine (PEI 2 kDa [PEI2]) by cholic acid (ChA) was performed to form PEI2-ChA, and in vitro and in vivo studies were performed. Results indicate that the nanoplexes of PEI2-ChA with gWIZ-GFP have greater transfection efficiency (27%) in NT8e cell lines as evaluated by flow cytometry and also observed by fluorescence imaging. The present study concluded that the transferrin-containing nanoplexes of PEI2-ChA conjugates with plasmid p53 warrant clinical trials in humans after exhaustive animal studies for use as a novel gene delivery system. 22. Xenophobia and Religious Education: Evoking an Education that Takes Responsibility in South Africa

Abstract

Xenophobia, despite various interventions, remains a thorny issue in South Africa with implications to curriculum practices. Thus, the paper responds to questions and these are; what are the trajectories of xenophobia within the curriculum, and how religious education takes responsibility for it? We used critical emancipatory research to couch a qualitative study that strategically random sampled 12 participants who were school learners, non-South Africans employed as teachers, and principals. The findings suggest that, while South Africa has made strides in many aspects, the issue of xenophobia still taunts the beauty of the rainbow nation, thereby creating African exceptionalism, isolation and social crises that affect learners directly. The study also found out the xenophobia has implications to teaching and learning, thus, requiring the problem to be tackled at curriculum level. We argue that religious education has the impetus to contribute to mitigating the challenges associated with xenophobia from a curriculum angle.

23. A transformative social policy approach to implementing IWRM in Zimbabwe and South Africa

Abstract

The paper examines water policy reforms in Zimbabwe and South Africa, focusing on challenges arising from the adoption of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and neoliberal philosophies. Through the transformative social policy (TSP) perspective and qualitative research, the paper provides a comparative analysis of both countries' experiences. Findings highlight divergent approaches, with Zimbabwe's reforms enabling democratic social transformation, while South Africa's emphasis on IWRM principles of economic efficiency and environmental sustainability has marginalised social equity. Considering their shared colonial history, our analysis underscores incorporating historical and contextual factors into water sector reforms for equitable change and protection of vulnerable groups, including women. By examining the intersection of water policy reforms, TSP, and local realities, this study contributes to the discourse on equitable and sustainable water management.

27. University-Rural Community Partnership for People-Centred Development: Experiences from Makhado Municipality, Limpopo Province

Abstract

Children, youth, women, the elderly, men and their leaders are integral components of rural communities. It is important to ensure that their unique needs and perceptions shape development programming. However, despite having various policies and legal frameworks introduced to deepen democracy in South Africa, current rural development programming approaches rarely create effective platforms that amplify this true community voice. Also, although Universities must serve as catalysts of rural development through appropriate community engagement, most of them are still unclear about how to realise this. This article presents a step by step community engagement approach that the University of Venda's Centre for Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation has followed since May 2006 to facilitate people-centred rural development processes in 47 villages of Makhado Municipality, Limpopo Province. About 60 students and nine academic staff members from various University departments are involved. Central to the work are more than 200 village-based "Foot Soldiers". To date, vibrant village-level community engagement platforms have been established. Also, Ward development plans have been crafted with active involvement of grassroots communities. Calving difficulty is an important trait in dairy production, as it affects profitability and animal welfare. Environmental factors and genetic parameters on maternal calving difficulty (MCD) were estimated for South African Holstein cattle using data from the National Milk Recording Scheme. The original data set comprised of calving records of 10,495,603 of cows 192,052, in 14 herds that calved between 1949 and 2018. Environmental effects were tested by the General Linear Models (GLM) procedure of the Statistical Analysis System. Maternal heritability for calving difficulty in the first three lactations was estimated by the ASReml software, using linear animal and repeatability animal models. Abstract

Background: Ticks and tick-borne diseases are a global problem and considered as one of the major challenges to livestock health and performance. Ticks affect 80% of the cattle population across the world with an estimated economic loss of USD $20 – 30 billion per/year worldwide. Numerous tick control strategies have been employed in Southern Africa including the application of acaricides. However, development of resistance to chemicals by ticks limits the effectiveness of this control strategy. Breeding for resistance or tolerance offers a complementary approach that is sustainable in the long term. This study aimed to identify genes that mediate immune responses in tick-tolerant Nguni, tick-susceptible Angus, and F2 Nguni X Angus cattle, infested with Amblyomma hebraeum ticks.Methods: Cattle were phenotyped for resistance to Amblyomma hebraeum ticks as determined by the total number of engorged ticks after a period of 10 days. Skin biopsy samples were collected before infestation, defined as day 1- and 10-days post-infestation. RNA was isolated from the skin biopsies and sequenced to identify differentially expressed genes between these two time points in resistant and susceptible animals.Results: Five genes (PHKG1, PHKA1, CAMK21, NOS2, HRC) were significantly differentially expressed between the susceptible and resistant cattle. Four of these five genes were highly expressed (significant) in the susceptible group before tick infestation. CAMK21 was found to be highly expressed in the resistantt group after tick infestation. HRC was found to be highly (significant) expressed in the susceptible group before tick infestation, but only highly expressed in resistant group after tick infestation.Conclusion: This research reports differential gene expression in the skin following tick bites, thus providing preliminary data concerning the underlying mechanisms associated with the immune response.

Abstract

In this crowdsourced initiative, independent analysts used the same dataset to test two hypotheses regarding the effects of scientists’ gender and professional status on verbosity during group meetings. Not only the analytic approach but also the operationalizations of key variables were left unconstrained and up to individual analysts. For instance, analysts could choose to operationalize status as job title, institutional ranking, citation counts, or some combination. To maximize transparency regarding the process by which analytic choices are made, the analysts used a platform we developed called DataExplained to justify both preferred and rejected analytic paths in real time. Analyses lacking sufficient detail, reproducible code, or with statistical errors were excluded, resulting in 29 analyses in the final sample. Researchers reported radically different analyses and dispersed empirical outcomes, in a number of cases obtaining significant effects in opposite directions for the same research question. A Boba multiverse analysis demonstrates that decisions about how to operationalize variables explain variability in outcomes above and beyond statistical choices (e.g., covariates). Subjective researcher decisions play a critical role in driving the reported empirical results, underscoring the need for open data, systematic robustness checks, and transparency regarding both analytic paths taken and not taken. Implications for organizations and leaders, whose decision making relies in part on scientific findings, consulting reports, and internal analyses by data scientists, are discussed.

35. Basaltic to andesitic volcaniclastic rocks in the Blake River Group, Abitibi Greenstone Belt: 2. Origin, geochemistry, and geochronology

Abstract

In the Archean Blake River Group, mafic to intermediate fragmentai units have controversially been proposed to have formed during the collapse of a giant submarine caldera. This paper describes and interprets these rocks, summarizing their physical characteristics, inferred origins, age relationships, and geochemical signatures. The widespread Stadacona member, south of Rouyn-Noranda, consists of several hundred metres of bedded volcaniclastic rocks interpreted to have been mostly deposited from aqueous density currents fed directly by explosive eruptions. The magmas involved in these eruptions were plagioclase-phyric, tholeiitic to transitional basalts. The similarly widespread D'Alembert tuff, in the northern part of the Blake River Group, shares many physical characteristics with the Stadacona member and is thought to have a similar origin. However, the D'Alembert tuff is approximately six million years younger than the Stadacona member. It is composed mostly of transitional to calc-alkaline andesites and basaltic andesites with very distinct trace element profiles. Volcaniclastic rocks from other areas, such as Tannahill Township in Ontario and the Monsabrais area in Quebec, are interpreted to represent mostly in situ to remobilized hyaloclastite, with no explosive eruptions involved in their genesis. Our observations and interpretations are not compatible with models in which the volcaniclastic units are emplaced during a catastrophic event in relation with the collapse of a giant caldera. Instead, the fragmental rocks were produced by various mechanisms at many distinct times during the evolution of the Blake River Group. Resume : Dans le Groupe archeen de Blake River, il a ete propose que des unites volcanoclastiques mafiques a intermediaires aient ete formees durant l'effondrement d'une caldeira sous-marine geante, mais cette proposition est controversee. Le present article decrit et interprete ces roches, resume leurs caracteristiques physiques, leurs origines inferees, les relations d'ages et les signatures geochimiques. Au sud de Rouyn-Noranda, le membre de Stadacona, d'etendu importante, comprend plusieurs centaines de metres de roches volcanoclastiques litees qui sont interpretees comme ayant ete deposees a partir de courants de densite aqueux alimentes directement par des eruptions explosives. Les magmas impliques dans ces eruptions etaient des basaltes d' affinite tholeiitique a transitionnelle contentant des phenocristaux de plagioclase. Dans la partie nord du Groupe de Blake River, le tuf de D'Alembert, egalement tres etendu, partage de nombreuses caracteristiques avec le membre de Stadacona et son origine serait similaire. Toutefois, le tuf de D'Alembert est approximativement six millions d'annees plus jeune que le membre Stadacona. Il est surtout compose d'andesites et d'andesites basaltiques transitionnelles a calco-alcalines avec des profils d'elements traces tres distincts. Les roches volcanoclastiques d'autres secteurs, tels que le comte de Tannahill en Ontario et le secteur de Monsabrais au Quebec, sont interpretees comme representant surtout des hyaloclastites in situ a remobilisees, sans eruption explosive impliquee dans leur genese. Nos observations et interpretations ne sont pas compatibles avec un modele selon lequel les unites volcanoclastiques aient ete mises en place durant un evenement catastrophique en relation avec l'effondrement d'une caldeira geante. Les roches fragmentaires ont plutot ete produites par divers mecanismes a plusieurs epoques distinctes durant l' evolution du Groupe de Blake River. Abstract

In this crowdsourced initiative, independent analysts used the same dataset to test two hypotheses regarding the effects of scientists’ gender and professional status on verbosity during group meetings. Not only the analytic approach but also the operationalizations of key variables were left unconstrained and up to individual analysts. For instance, analysts could choose to operationalize status as job title, institutional ranking, citation counts, or some combination. To maximize transparency regarding the process by which analytic choices are made, the analysts used a platform we developed called DataExplained to justify both preferred and rejected analytic paths in real time. Analyses lacking sufficient detail, reproducible code, or with statistical errors were excluded, resulting in 29 analyses in the final sample. Researchers reported radically different analyses and dispersed empirical outcomes, in a number of cases obtaining significant effects in opposite directions for the same research question. A Boba multiverse analysis demonstrates that decisions about how to operationalize variables explain variability in outcomes above and beyond statistical choices (e.g., covariates). Subjective researcher decisions play a critical role in driving the reported empirical results, underscoring the need for open data, systematic robustness checks, and transparency regarding both analytic paths taken and not taken. Implications for organizations and leaders, whose decision making relies in part on scientific findings, consulting reports, and internal analyses by data scientists, are discussed.

Abstract

The Archaean low-grade, large-tonnage Côté Gold Au(-Cu) deposit is the first large gold deposit discovered in the Swayze greenstone belt. The deposit is hosted by the Chester Intrusive Complex, a low-Al composite, subvolcanic intrusion composed of tonalite, quartz diorite, and diorite that was previously constrained to ca. 2 741 to 2 739 Ma (U-Pb zircon). Presented here is the first detailed study of the mineralisation and related alteration, along with the relative and absolute age (U-Pb, Re-Os) constraints on gold mineralisation. The earliest hydrothermal stage is represented by rare Au-bearing amphibole-rich veins and breccias. The main ore stage consists of biotite-rich alteration centred on an Au(-Cu)–bearing magmatic-hydrothermal biotite breccia body with spatially related disseminated biotite and veins of both sheeted and stockwork type. Extensive fracture-controlled and replacement-style Au ± Cu-bearing muscovite alteration overprints biotite-altered rocks in the core of the deposit. Considering the spatial association of the deposit with a dioritic intrusion and the temporal overlap of igneous activity with alteration (i.e., amphibole, biotite, sericite) and mineralisation (i.e., breccias, veins, disseminations), the deposit is interpreted as an Archaean magmatic-hydrothermal ore system sharing analogies with Phanerozoic Au-Cu porphyry deposits. 44. Heterogeneity of variance for milk production traits between the low and high input dairy production systems of South Africa

Abstract

South African dairy cattle industry is characterized by a dual production system, comprising of a high input commercial production system and low input smallholder and emerging dairy herds. Performance data from both systems are included in national genetic evaluations, with models that assume homogeneous variances. If variances are heterogeneous, above average animals in more variable herds will be favoured over high performing animals in the less variable herds. This may result in biased selection and inaccurate estimation of breeding values. With intensified selection, genetically inferior animals could be chosen, thereby decreasing the realised genetic gain, resulting in lower productivity. The aim of the study was to investigate the extent of heterogeneity of variance between the two dairy production systems South African Holstein cattle. Milk production data were obtained from the Integrated Registration and Genetic Information System of South Africa (INTERGIS).High input production system data set consisted of 68 000 lactation records from 741 herds, recorded between 2006 and 2018.Pedigree file comprised of 38 126 daughters of 2 472 sires and 4 305 dams. Data for the low input production system comprised of 32 388 lactation records of 3 325 daughters of 134 sires and 253 dams from 59 herds recorded from 2006 to 2018. Hartley’s Fmax test was used to test for heterogeneity of variances for 305 day yields of milk, fat and protein between the high and low input production systems. Non-genetic factors affecting these traits were then determined by the Proc GLM procedure of SAS. Genetic and phenotypic parameters among these traits were estimated, for each production system, by the Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) procedure in the ASREML software.vHeritability estimates for milk, fat and protein yield, respectively, were 0.70 ± 0.027, 0.55 ± 0.35 and 0.64 ± 0.03 for the low input production system compared to 0.16 ± 0.014, 0.11 ± 0.012 and 0.145 ± 0.013 for the, National Research Foundation (NRF)-VLIR and University of Limpopo
