The high optoelectronic quality of halide perovskites lends them to be utilized in optoelectronic devices and recently in emerging quantum emission applications. Advancements in perovskite nanomaterials have led to the discovery of processes in which luminescence decay times are sub-100 picoseconds, stimulating the exploration of even faster radiative rates for advanced quantum applications, which have only been prominently realised in III-V materials grown through costly epitaxial growth methods. Here, we discovered ultrafast quantum transients of time scales ~2 picoseconds at low temperature in bulk formamidinium lead iodide films grown through scalable solution or vapour approaches. Using a multimodal strategy, combining ultrafast spectroscopy, optical and electron microscopy, we show that these transients originate from quantum tunnelling in nanodomain superlattices. The outcome of the transient decays, photoluminescence, mirrors the photoabsorption of the states, with an ultra-narrow linewidth at low temperature as low as <2 nm (~4 meV). Localized correlation of the emission and structure reveals that the nanodomain superlattices are formed by alternating ordered layers of corner sharing and face sharing octahedra. Empirical A-site cation substitution has advanced the stability and efficiency of hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites solar cells and the functionality of X-ray detectors. Yet, the fundamental mechanisms underpinning their unique performance remain elusive. This multi-modal study unveils the link between nanoscale structural dynamics and macroscopic optoelectronic properties in these materials by utilising X-ray diffuse scattering, inelastic neutron spectroscopy and optical microscopy complemented by state-of-the-art machine learning-assisted molecular dynamics simulations. Our approach uncovers the presence of dynamic, lower-symmetry local nanodomains embedded within the higher-symmetry average phase in various perovskite compositions. The properties of these nanodomains are tunable via the A-site cation selection: methylammonium induces a high density of anisotropic, planar nanodomains of out-of-phase octahedral tilts, while formamidinium favours sparsely distributed isotropic, spherical nanodomains with in-phase tilting, even when crystallography reveals cubic symmetry on average. The observed variations in the properties of dynamic nanodomains are in agreement with our simulations and are directly linked to the differing macroscopic optoelectronic and ferroelastic behaviours of these compositions. By demonstrating the influence of A-site cation on local nanodomains and consequently, on macroscopic properties, we propose leveraging this relationship to engineer the optoelectronic response of these materials, propelling further advancements in perovskite-based photovoltaics, optoelectronics, and X-ray imaging., Comment: Main text and supplementary information. Next-generation low-cost semiconductors such as halide perovskites exhibit optoelectronic properties dominated by nanoscale variations in their structure, composition and photophysics. While microscopy provides a proxy for ultimate device function, past works have focused on neat thin-films on insulating substrates, missing crucial information about charge extraction losses and recombination losses introduced by transport layers. Here we use a multimodal operando microscopy toolkit to measure nanoscale current-voltage curves, recombination losses and chemical composition in an array of state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells before and after extended operational stress. We apply this toolkit to the same scan areas before and after extended operation to reveal that devices with the highest performance have the lowest initial performance spatial heterogeneity - a crucial link that is missed in conventional microscopy. We find that subtle compositional engineering of the perovskite has surprising effects on local disorder and resilience to operational stress. Minimising variations in local efficiency, rather than compositional disorder, is predictive of improved performance and stability. Modulating the interfaces with different contact layers or passivation treatments can increase initial performance but can also lead to dramatic nanoscale, interface-dominated degradation even in the presence of local performance homogeneity, inducing spatially varying transport, recombination, and electrical losses. These operando measurements of full devices act as screenable diagnostic tools, uniquely unveiling the microscopic mechanistic origins of device performance losses and degradation in an array of halide perovskite devices and treatments. In recent years, halide perovskite materials have been used to make high performance solar cell and light-emitting devices. However, material defects still limit device performance and stability. Here, we use synchrotron-based Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging to visualise nanoscale strain fields, such as those local to defects, in halide perovskite microcrystals. We find significant strain heterogeneity within MAPbBr$_{3}$ (MA = CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}^{+}$) crystals in spite of their high optoelectronic quality, and identify both $\langle$100$\rangle$ and $\langle$110$\rangle$ edge dislocations through analysis of their local strain fields. By imaging these defects and strain fields in situ under continuous illumination, we uncover dramatic light-induced dislocation migration across hundreds of nanometres. Further, by selectively studying crystals that are damaged by the X-ray beam, we correlate large dislocation densities and increased nanoscale strains with material degradation and substantially altered optoelectronic properties assessed using photoluminescence microscopy measurements. Metal halide perovskites are multifunctional semiconductors with tunable structures and properties. They are highly dynamic crystals with complex octahedral tilting patterns and strongly anharmonic atomic behaviour. In the higher temperature, higher symmetry phases of these materials, several complex structural features have been observed. The local structure can differ greatly from the average structure and there is evidence that dynamic two-dimensional structures of correlated octahedral motion form. An understanding of the underlying complex atomistic dynamics is, however, still lacking. In this work, the local structure of the inorganic perovskite CsPbI$_3$ is investigated using a new machine learning force field based on the atomic cluster expansion framework. Through analysis of the temporal and spatial correlation observed during large-scale simulations, we reveal that the low frequency motion of octahedral tilts implies a double-well effective potential landscape, even well into the cubic phase. Moreover, dynamic local regions of lower symmetry are present within both higher symmetry phases. These regions are planar and we report the length and timescales of the motion. Finally, we investigate and visualise the spatial arrangement of these features and their interactions, providing a comprehensive picture of local structure in the higher symmetry phases.

We provide evidence of strongly confined coherent acoustic phonons inside high quality factor phononic cavities that exhibit tailoredphonon potentials. Using GaAs/AlAs quasiperiodic superlattices, these functional phonon potentials are realized by adiabatically changing the layer thicknesses along the growth direction. Room temperature ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy reveals discrete phonon levels in the range of $\approx 96-101$ GHz. Additionally, we confirm that phononic cavities significantly retard the energy loss rate of the photoexcited carriers as evidenced by time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. Hot carrier solar cells promise theoretical power conversion efficiencies far beyond the single junction limit. However, practical implementations of hot carrier solar cells have lagged far behind those theoretical predictions. Reciprocity relations for electro-luminescence from conventional single junction solar cells have been extremely successful in driving their efficiency ever closer to the theoretical limits. In this work, we discuss how the signatures of a functioning hot carrier device should manifest experimentally in electro-luminescence and dark $I-V$ characteristics. Hot carrier properties lead to deviations from the Shockley diode equation that is typical for conventional single junction solar cells. These deviations are directly linked to an increase in temperature of the carriers and therefore the temperature measured from electro-luminescence spectra. We also elucidate how the behaviour of hot carrier solar cells in the dark depends on whether Auger processes play a significant role, revealing a stark contrast between the regime of negligible Auger recombination (carrier conservation model) and dominant Auger recombination (Impact Ionization model) for hot carrier solar cells., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures
