Abstract

In this work we use the random matrix theory (RMT) to correctly describethe behavior of spectral statistical properties of the sea surface temperatureof oceans. This oceanographic variable plays an important role in theglobalclimate system. The data were obtained from National Oceanic and Atmo-spheric Administration (NOAA) and delimited for the period 1982 to 2016.The results show that oceanographic systems presented specific $\beta$ values thatcan be used to classify each ocean according to its correlation behavior. Thenearest-neighbors spacing of correlation matrix for north, central and south ofthe three oceans get close to a RMT distribution. However, the regions delim-ited in the Antarctic pole exhibited the distribution of the nearest-neighborsspacing well described by the Poisson model, which shows astatistical changeof RMT to Poisson fluctuations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters A

13. Importance of estuaries for the horse-eye jack Caranx latus in northeastern Brazil: a case study of underestimated connectivity at the land-sea interface

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the importance of inshore estuarine habitats for the maintenance of offshore exploited stocks of the horse-eye jack Caranx latus, a marine tropical species of high economic value. Otoliths of 143 yearlings were used to develop a data set of multi-elemental fingerprints for different juvenile habitats of C. latus in northeastern Brazil, including 7 estuaries and the coastal zone. This data set was then compared to the signatures in the juvenile part of the otolith of 40 sub-adult and adult fish caught at sea to identify their origin. Although otolith multi-elemental concentrations overlapped for some of the estuaries investigated, the maximum overall discrimination accuracy between them was only 58%. However, grouping several estuaries according to their similarity in elemental signatures increased accuracy to 80%. In both cases, correct re-assignment rates for the coastal zone were above 94%, and strontium (Sr) was the most significant element in juvenile habitat discrimination. The remaining elements (B, Ba, Co, P, Rb, and Zn) allowed us to distinguish between 3 distinct groups of estuaries, for which correct re-assignment rates were 70-88%. Juvenile fingerprints in sub-adult and adult otoliths revealed that most of the fish in the local, exploited stock (75%) originate from an inshore estuarine habitat, particularly from larger estuaries under constant marine influence (32.5%). This biological connectivity between continental and coastal waters should be considered for the conservation of tropical marine coastal stocks in general, as it is likely to apply to other exploited marine species, in Brazil and elsewhere.

Abstract

We estimated carbon and nitrogen stocks in aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB) along an elevation range in forest sites located on the steep slopes of the Serra do Mar on the north coast of the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. In elevations of 100 m (lowland), 400 m (submontane), and 1000 m (montane) four 1-ha plots were established, and above- (live and dead) and belowground (live and dead) biomass were determined. Carbon and nitrogen concentrations in each compartment were determined and used to convert biomass into carbon and nitrogen stocks. The carbon aboveground stock (C(AGB)) varied along the elevation range from approximately 110 to 150 Mg·ha(-1), and nitrogen aboveground stock (N(AGB)), varied from approximately 1.0 to 1.9 Mg·ha(-1). The carbon belowground stock (C(BGB)) and the nitrogen belowground stock (N(BGB)) were significantly higher than the AGB and varied along the elevation range from approximately 200-300 Mg·ha(-1), and from 14 to 20 Mg·ha(-1), respectively. Finally, the total carbon stock (C(TOTAL)) varied from approximately 320 to 460 Mg·ha(-1), and the nitrogen total stock (N(TOTAL)) from approximately 15 to 22 Mg·ha(-1). Most of the carbon and nitrogen stocks were found belowground and not aboveground as normally found in lowland tropical forests. The above- and belowground stocks, and consequently, the total stocks of carbon and nitrogen increased significantly with elevation. As the soil and air temperature also decreased significantly with elevation, we found a significantly inverse relationship between carbon and nitrogen stocks and temperature. Using this inverse relationship, we made a first approach estimate that an increase of 1°C in soil temperature would decrease the carbon and nitrogen stocks in approximately 17 Mg·ha(-1) and 1 Mg·ha(-1) of carbon and nitrogen, respectively.

20. Community‐scale relationships between body shape and trophic ecology in tropical demersal marine fish of northeast Brazil

Abstract

Functional morphology investigates the relationships between morphological characters and external factors, such as environmental, physical and ecological features. Here, we evaluate the functional relationships between body shape and trophic ecology of a tropical demersal marine fish community using geometric morphometrics techniques and modelling, hypothesizing that shape variables could partially explain fish trophic level. Fish were collected over the continental shelf of Northeast Brazil (4˗9°S). Analysed fish were distributed into 14 orders, 34 families and 72 species. Each individual was photographed in lateral view, and 18 landmarks were distributed along the body. A PCA applied on morphometric indices revealed that fish body elongation and fin base shape were the main axes of variation explaining the morphology. Low trophic levels (herbivore and omnivore) are characterised by deep bodies, and longer dorsal and anal fin bases, while predators present elongated bodies and narrow fin bases. Fin position (dorsal and anal fins) on the fish body is another important factor contributing to (i) body stability at high velocity (top predators) or (ii) manoeuvrability (low trophic levels). Using multiple linear regression, we verified that 46% of trophic level variability could be explained by morphometric variables, with trophic level increasing with body elongation and size. Interestingly, intermediate trophic categories (e.g., low predators) presented morphological divergence for a given trophic level. Our results, which can likely be expanded to other tropical and non-tropical systems, show that morphometric approaches can provide important insights into fish functional characteristics, especially in trophic ecology.

Abstract

In this study, the process of osseointegration on titanium implant surfaces with different physicochemical treatments subjected to a simulated corporal fluid submersion was evaluated using the concept of fractal dimension. It was found that different treatments led to rather different calcium phosphate crystal growth patterns, with fractal dimension ranging from 1.68 to 1.93. The observed crystal patterns may be explained by a general deposition, diffusion, and aggregation growth mechanism, where diffusing particle sticking probability plays a fundamental role. Abstract

Based on the fact that the intense photosynthetic activity of blooms causes a marked decrease in free CO2 concentrations and increase in pH of the water, the aim of the present study was to investigate the competitive relationship between Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and Microcystis aeruginosa under different pH and inorganic carbon conditions. Our hypothesis is that C. raciborskii is a better competitor than M. aeruginosa in alkaline pH and when bicarbonate (HCO3−) is the main source of carbon. Semi-continuous cultures were conducted in a factorial experiment with three different pH conditions (free [unbuffered], 6.8 and 8.2), with and without aeration, and with and without the addition of a bicarbonate source. Both species demonstrated a good performance under high pH, but the interaction between the factors determined significant differences in the competitive responses of the C. raciborskii and M. aeruginosa strains, with a change in dominance in the different scenarios. Whilst C. raciborskii was favoured by aeration, the addition of bicarbonate improved the growth of M. aeruginosa. The results suggest that affinity and efficiency in bicarbonate use may be a determinant of dominance and competitive success in potentially toxic cyanobacteria, such as the genus Microcystis. Hippurus, was studied to verify the hypotheses of two stocks in the northeastern Brazilian coast. Eighty two sagittal otoliths were collected from specimens caught by the artisanal fleet in two regions of northestern Brazil (Maranhão – MA and Rio Grande do Norte – RN coasts), in December of 2003 and April to May of 2004, respectively. Several types of shape descriptors were taken (area, perimeter, rectangularity, circularity, eccentricity, fractal dimension and Fourier coeficients) to evaluate the similarity level between regions. Differences between left and rigth otoliths and by sex were not found in the sample. Cluster and principal components (PC) analyses, based in the Fourier coeficients of 30th harmonics, revealed a three morfotypes pattern, concerning general differences of otolith shape. This pattern is supposed to be influenced by genetic factors, according to ANOVA results among the six signicant PC, regardless clinal variation between samples. When the two geographical regions were compared, significants differences were found in the otolith structure using both MANOVA and ANOVA, for all shape descriptors. Canonical discriminant analysis suggested the separation of the two regions samples, with a sucess classification of 57,1% for MA and 69,6% for RN, despite the high variability among otoliths shapes. The fractal dimension was a powerful descriptor to discriminate the two samples in this work, since the significance in all cases and high DSC value. Differencesin sagittal otoliths shape, possibly are due to different growth rates, added evidences to confirm the two stocks hypotheses of C. hippurus along the Brazilian coast. A forma do otólito sagita do dourado, C. hippurus, foi estudada para verificar a hipótese de dois estoques na costa nordeste do Brasil. Oitenta e dois otólitos foram coletados de espécimes desembarcados pela frota artesanal na costa do estado do Maranhão (MA), em dezembro 2003, e na costa do Rio Grande do Norte (RN), de abril a maio de 2004. A partir da imagem do otólito, foram obtidos vários descritores da forma (área, perímetro, retangularidade, circularidade, excentricidade, dimensão fractal e coeficientes de Fourier) para avaliar, sobre vários aspectos, qual o nível de similaridade entre os otólitos das duas amostras. Nenhuma diferença significativa, na amostra, foi observada entre os otólitos direitos e esquerdos e entre sexos. As análises de agrupamento e de componentes principais, baseadas nos coeficientes de Fourier das 30 primeiras harmônicas, estabeleceram um padrão de 3 morfotipos do otóltio de dourado, os quais estão correlacionados a diferenças gerais da forma. A ANOVA entre os CPs sugeriu que este padrão esteja relacionado a características genéticas, pois nenhuma evidência de seleção clinal foi encontrada. Na comparação das amostras do MA e do RN, foram encontradas diferenças significativas na estrutura do otólito entre as duas regiões estudadas, tanto nas análises de variância uni e multivariada, como também na análise discriminante canônica. O sucesso de classificação foi de 57,1% para a amostra do MA e 69,6% para a do RN. A dimensão fractal demonstrou ser um eficiente descritor, pois foi significativamente diferente em todas as análises e apresentou um dos maiores valores de DSC. Os resultados sobre diferenças das características da forma do otólito sagita, que aparentam estar relacionadas a taxas de crescimento, adicionou evidências indicativas para a confirmação da hipótese de 2 circuitos migratórios do C. hippurus ao longo da costa brasileira mesmo havendo uma grande variabilidade individual.
