Optical colonoscopy (OC) is the first choice of investigation for assessing the state of the colon and it is excellent for CRC screening. Newer technologies such as computed tomography colonography (CTC) may also be useful in CRC screening. This systematic review compares the benefits of CTC and OC for CRC screening. This review includes all the available randomized clinical trials comparing CTC and OC for CRC screening in asymptomatic patients. Three studies were included in the systematic review and were submitted for meta-analysis. In the analysis of participation rates, only 2,333 of 8,104 (29%) patients who were invited for screening underwent the CTC, and only 1,486 of the 7,310 (20%) patients who were invited for screening underwent OC. The absolute risk difference in participation rate in the two procedures was 0.1 (95% CI, 0.05–0.14) in favor of CTC. In the analysis of advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACN) detection rates, 2,357 patients undergoing CTC and 1,524 patients undergoing OC were included. Of these, 135 patients (5.7%) who underwent a CTC and 130 patients (8.5%) who underwent an OC were diagnosed with ACN. The absolute risk difference in ACN detection rate in the two procedure types was -0.02 (with a 95% CI between -0.04 and -0.00) in favor of OC. CTC is an option for CRC screening in asymptomatic patients. However, as CTC was inferior in detecting ACN, it should not replace OC, which remains the gold standard. The acaricidal potential of various essential oils (EOs) has been evaluated based on their benefits in tick control. This study aimed to investigate the tick-killing activity of Pogostemon cablin "patchouli," Cymbopogon martinii "palmarosa," and Cymbopogon flexuosus "lemongrass" EOs on Rhipicephalus linnaei. Engorged females were collected from domiciled and non-domiciled dogs from Jataí city, Goiás state, to obtain larvae and nymphs in a controlled environment. Two commercial EOs brands were used in this study in different EOs concentrations (2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mg/mL), and was tested by immersion of larvae and nymphs. In the in vitro evaluation of EOs toxicity against R. linnaei larvae, 100 % mortality was achieved with 10 mg/mL of P. cablin oil, whereas mortality rates greater than 98 % were observed with 20 mg/mL of C. martinii and C. flexuosus. In nymphs, high sensitivity was observed, with 100 % mortality achieved using 5 mg/mL of P. cablin and 20 mg/mL of C. martinii and C. flexuosus. The EO of P. cablin "patchouli" demonstrated in vitro toxicity at a lower concentration than the other oils in the two development stages of R. linnaei, and was considered the most efficient and with verified acaricidal activity. Oils of C. martinii "palmarosa" and C. flexuosus "lemongrass" achieved mortality greater than 95 % in larvae and nymphs only at the highest concentration. Studying parasites in captive wild birds is vital for their health, well-being, biodiversity preservation, species conservation, and safeguarding of both individual birds and ecosystems. It holds significance for public health by identifying potential zoonotic risks. We aimed to describe the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in captive wild birds from a Conservation Institute in Brazilian Cerrado biome. Fresh fecal samples were collected from 17 captive wild birds ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus , Ara ararauna , Ara chloropterus , Ara macao , Megascops choliba , Pteroglossus castanotis , Ramphastos dicolorus , Ramphastos tucanus and Strix huhula ) at a Conservation Institution in Mineiros, state of Goiás. The samples were processed for Willis' simple flotation and Hoffman's spontaneous sedimentation examinations to identify parasitic forms of gastrointestinal endoparasites. Macaw aviary birds ( Ar. ararauna , Ar. chloropterus and Ar. macao ) showed higher positivity, with all six fecal samples positive for helminths or protozoa. In contrast, captive toucans showed only two positive results ( P. castanotis and R. dicolorus ). An. hyacinthinus showed Ascarididae, Capillarinae and Trematoda eggs; whereas S. huhula had Ascarididae eggs. The behavior, cortisol concentration and cerebral hemisphere activity of twelve marmoset monkeys were determined during standardized predatory stress-related events. Each subject was submitted to three 5-min trials, randomly held at 2-week intervals: a human intruder, a taxidermized oncilla cat and a no-stimulus control trial. Stimuli were positioned outside the home-cage and the ensuing reaction recorded. Baseline tympanic membrane temperature (TMT) was subtracted from the post-trial measure to determine changes in blood flow induced by ipsilateral brain activity. Cortisol was assayed immediately after the post-trial TMT assessments. Both genders reacted fearfully/anxiously towards the stimuli - each condition inducing a distinct pattern. Cortisol increased only when females were confronted with the wildcat, with higher levels of alarm calls predicting lower cortisol release. When either stimulus was present, changes in TMT were detected, albeit only in the right ear. The specific directional shift in temperature was gender- and stimulus-dependent, requiring further investigation. The control trial did not alter any of the parameters. Marmosets thus exhibit flexible multileveled coping strategies towards different aversive events, yet in general these seem to be asymmetrically processed by the right cerebral hemisphere., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Our aim in this study was to compare the efficiency of 25G versus 22G needles in diagnosing solid pancreatic lesions by EUS-FNA. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. Studies were identified in five databases using an extensive search strategy. Only randomized trials comparing 22G and 25G needles were included. The results were analyzed by fixed and random effects. A total of 504 studies were found in the search, among which 4 randomized studies were selected for inclusion in the analysis. A total of 462 patients were evaluated (233: 25G needle/229: 22G needle). The diagnostic sensitivity was 93% for the 25G needle and 91% for the 22G needle. The specificity of the 25G needle was 87%, and that of the 22G needle was 83%. The positive likelihood ratio was 4.57 for the 25G needle and 4.26 for the 22G needle. The area under the sROC curve for the 25G needle was 0.9705, and it was 0.9795 for the 22G needle, with no statistically significant difference between them (p=0.497). Based on randomized studies, this meta-analysis did not demonstrate a significant difference between the 22G and 25G needles used during EUS-FNA in the diagnosis of solid pancreatic lesions.

Water adsorption enhanced catalysis has been recently shown to greatly increase the conversion yield of CO2 methanation. However, the joint catalysis and adsorption process requires new reactor concepts. We measured the spatial water distribution in a model fixed bed reactor using time resolved neutron imaging. Due to the high neutron attenuation coefficient of hydrogen, the absorbed water in the sorption catalyst gives a high contrast allowing us to follow its formation and map its distribution. At the same time, the product gas was analysed by FTIR-gas analysis. The measurements provided crucial insights into the future design of sorption reactors: during the sorption enhanced reaction, a reaction front runs through the reactor. Once the extension of the reaction front reaches the exhaust, the conversion rate of sorption enhanced methanation decreases. The existence of a reaction front running through the reactor is prerequisite for a high conversion rate. We give a simple model of the experimental results, in particular the conditions, under which a reaction front is established. In particular the latter effect must be taken into account for the dimensions of a large scale reactor.

Background: Although repeated exposure to cocaine can induce hypervigilance and conditioned-place-preference (CPP) in nonhuman primates (NHPs), more detailed analyses are warranted since the outcome can be influenced by different factors., Methods: We evaluated in marmoset monkeys (Callithrix penicillata): (1) the onset time-course and dose-dependent (3 or 7mg/kg; i.p.) profile of their hypervigilance and CPP response to repeated cocaine exposure; (2) whether these behavioral measures are still detectable after a 15-day no-drug period; (3) the relationship between their hypervigilance and CPP responses; and (4) if these behavioral changes correlate with pre- and post-drug behaviors (i.e., vigilance, locomotion, exploration), and/or first response to cocaine., Results: Hypervigilance had a slow-onset, was only effective with the 7mg/kg dose of cocaine, lacked long-term conditioned effects and was not related to the initial cocaine response or pre-drug behaviors, regardless of the dose tested. CPP was promptly induced with the 3 and 7mg/kg doses, and had a dose-dependent long-term effect and negative correlation with pre-drug locomotion and exploration. Hypervigilance and CPP were not significantly correlated., Conclusions: Although hypervigilance and CPP were induced, they had distinct temporal and dose-dependent profiles, and were not equally co-expressed in the same marmoset. The effect of a high (chocolate) versus low fat/sugar (chow) food on a conditioned-place-preference (CPP) task was evaluated in marmoset monkeys. Anxiety-related behaviors and cortisol levels before and after the CPP task were also measured. Subjects were habituated to a two-compartment CPP box and then, on alternate days, had access to only one compartment during daily 15-min conditionings, for a total of 14 trials. Marmosets were provisioned with chocolate chips in the CC-paired compartment on odd-numbered trials and standard chow in the CW-paired compartment on even-numbered trials. They were then tested for preferring the CC-paired context after a 24-h interval. During the conditioning, a significantly greater amount (in kcal/trial) of chocolate was consumed than chow, yet the foraging pattern of both food types was similar. On the test trial, the time spent in the CC-paired context increased significantly compared to pre-CPP levels, yet this response was not readily predicted by baseline behavioral or cortisol levels. Also, the chocolate CPP response was positively correlated with foraging time, rather than the amount of calories consumed. The sudden absence of the food increased exploration, while the chocolate CPP effect was associated with vigilance - both anxiety-related behaviors in marmosets. This behavioral profile occurred regardless of any concomitant change or correlation with cortisol. Therefore, the high fat/sugar food was more prone to be overly consumed by the marmosets, to induce a CPP response and to lead to anxiety-related behavior in its absence., (Copyright © 2014. The influence of the support type and the metal precursor on the dispersion of rhodium after calcination and reduction was determined. The combination of electron microscopy and X-ray absorption analysis allowed the quantification of the amount of atomically dispersed rhodium in the samples. Higher amounts of atomically dispersed rhodium atoms are obtained when metal impregnation is performed with a rhodium acetate precursor in comparison to a rhodium chloride precursor over supports of the same composition. The stability of rhodium is improved with the addition of promoters; the co-presence of samaria and ceria in the support and metal impregnation with a rhodium acetate precursor leads to the highest amount of atomically dispersed rhodium remaining after reductive treatment at 773 K.

Highly palatible foods may induce addiction-related behaviors. However, this has yet to be established in non-human primates. Therefore, we evaluated whether marmoset monkeys (Calllithrix penicillata) acquire a conditioned-place-preference (CPP) for chocolate and if this response is detectable after a 24-h and 15-day period. Subjects were first habituated to a two-compartment CPP box and then randomly assigned to a chocolate or control group. Thereafter, they were given access to only one compartment during daily 15-min conditionings, held on six consecutive days. On each trial, the chocolate group received pieces of chocolate (50g) in this context, whereas controls were not given a food reward. Marmosets were subsequently tested for preferring this (food) paired context after a 24-h and 15-day interval. During conditioning, individual foraging and the amount of chocolate ingested by each pair of the chocolate group remained constant. However, compared to pre-CPP levels, the time spent inside/in contact with the conditioned compartment increased significantly, while the latency to first entry decreased on both post-CPP intervals. Background: During ageing an altered redox balance has been observed in both intracellular and extracellular compartments, primarily due to glutathione depletion and metabolic stress. Maintaining redox homeostasis is important for controlling proliferation and apoptosis in response to specific stimuli for a variety of cells. For T cells, the ability to generate specific response to antigen is dependent on the oxidation state of cell surface and cytoplasmic protein-thiols. Intracellular thiols are maintained in their reduced state by a network of redox regulating peptides, proteins and enzymes such as glutathione, thioredoxins and thioredoxin reductase. Here we have investigated whether any relationship exists between age and secreted or cell surface thioredoxin-1, intracellular glutathione concentration and T cell surface thioredoxin 1 (Trx-1) and how this is related to interleukin (IL)-2 production., Results: Healthy older adults have reduced lymphocyte surface expression and lower circulating plasma Trx-1 concentrations. Using buthionine sulfoximine to deplete intracellular glutathione in Jurkat T cells we show that cell surface Trx-1 is lowered, secretion of Trx-1 is decreased and the response to the lectin phytohaemagglutinin measured as IL-2 production is also affected. These effects are recapitulated by another glutathione depleting agent, diethylmaleate., Conclusion: Together these data suggest that a relationship exists between the intracellular redox compartment and Trx-1 proteins. Loss of lymphocyte surface Trx-1 may be a useful biomarker of healthy ageing.

Coronary computed tomography angiography (coronary CTA) is a powerful non-invasive imaging method to evaluate coronary artery disease. Nowadays, coronary CTA estimated effective radiation dose can be dramatically reduced using state-of-the-art scanners, such as 320-row detector CT (320-CT), without changing coronary CTA diagnostic accuracy. To optimize and further reduce the radiation dose, new iterative reconstruction algorithms were released recently by several CT manufacturers, and now they are used routinely in coronary CTA. This paper presents our first experience using coronary CTA with 320-CT and the Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction 3D (AIDR-3D). In addition, we describe the current indications for coronary CTA in our practice as well as the acquisition standard protocols and protocols related to CT application for radiation dose reduction. In conclusion, coronary CTA radiation dose can be dramatically reduced following the "as low as reasonable achievable" principle by combination of exam indication and well-documented technics for radiation dose reduction, such as beta blockers, low-kV, and also the newest iterative dose reduction software as AIDR-3D.

An autoclave reactor was modified to perform simultaneously high energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD XAS) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy measurements without altering the reactor design. This operando cell allows one to follow changes in the electronic and geometric structure of the catalyst with HERFD XAS and relate them to the simultaneously detected activity and reaction species with ATR-FTIR formed during the reaction in the liquid phase. The capability of the cell is demonstrated by two studies. The first shows the reduction of Au/CeO(2) precursors in different solvents. The second shows that mainly Au(0) is present in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene over Au/CeO(2).

The immediate-early gene egr-1 has been shown to have an increased expression during long-term potentiation (LTP). High frequency electrical stimulation induces an increase in such expression in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. However, evidence demonstrating the activation of this gene in the spinal cord and its relationship with LTP is still scarce. The substance P (SP) has also been associated with LTP in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord following high frequency stimulation. Here we evaluated the expression of both Egr-1 and SP in the sacrolumbar area of the spinal cord after locomotor training in adult rats. Increased neuronal Egr-1 expression was found in the spinal cord sections in rats that underwent locomotor training, especially in laminae IV and X across L3-S4 levels (p<0.05). Conversely, SP expression in synaptic terminals was not altered in the abovementioned regions. Our results suggest that locomotor training activates mechanisms in a similar way to LTP, and is involved in the synaptic plasticity in the spinal cord. The results also indicate that variations in the training protocol influence Egr-1 expression. Such events appear not to be directly influenced by SP, which suggests a plastic process that differs from those triggered by nociceptive stimuli., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this study, two circadian related centers, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) were evaluated in respect to their cytoarchitecture, retinal afferents and chemical content of major cells and axon terminals in the rock cavy (Kerodon rupestris), a Brazilian rodent species. The rock cavy SCN is innervated in its ventral portion by terminals from the predominantly contralateral retina. It also contains vasopressin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and glutamic acid decarboxilase immunoreactive cell bodies and neuropeptide Y, serotonin and enkephalin immunopositive fibers and terminals and is marked by intense glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity. The IGL receives a predominantly contralateral retinal projection, contains neuropeptide Y and nitric oxide synthase-producing neurons and enkephalin immunopositive terminals and is characterized by dense GFAP immunoreactivity. This is the first report examining the neural circadian system in a crepuscular rodent species for which circadian properties have been described. The thalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVT) receives afferents from numerous brain areas, including the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), considered to be the major circadian pacemaker. The PVT also sends projections to the SCN, limbic system centers and some nuclei involved in the control of the Sleep-Wake cycle. In this study, we report the identification of a hitherto not reported direct retinal projection to the PVT of the rock cavy, a typical rodent species of the northeast region of Brazil. After unilateral intravitreal injections of cholera toxin subunit B (CTb), anterogradely transported CTb-immunoreactive fibers and presumptive terminals were seen in the PVT. Some possible functional correlates of the present data are briefly discussed, including the role of the PVT in the modulation of the circadian rhythms by considering the reciprocal connections between the PVT and the SCN. The present work is the first to show a direct retinal projection to the PVT of a rodent and may contribute to elucidate the anatomical substrate of the functionally demonstrated involvement of this midline thalamic nucleus in the modulation of the circadian timing system.
