3. Assessing the Vulnerability of Maize Crop Productivity to Precipitation Anomalies: A Case Study in the Semiarid Region of Cesar, Colombia.

Climate variability is a major threat to maize (Zea mays) crops in Colombia, posing a risk to food security and compliance with Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the physical vulnerability of maize crops to climate variability in the semi-arid region of the Department of Cesar, Colombia, using the AquaCrop-OS model. Specifically, the study evaluated the vulnerability of maize crops to three typical meteorological years (dry, intermediate, and wet) adjusted to the growth cycle in two semesters of the year (periods I and II). An analysis of 43 years of data (1980–2022) revealed that most years in the area can be classified as intermediate, whereas the number of wet years was higher than the number of dry years. However, under the intermediate typical meteorological year scenario, maize cultivation in the department of Cesar experienced severe drought conditions during periods I and II. The study's vulnerability curve showed an increasing rate within the yield loss index when the average water stress index was between 0.5 and 0.8 for period I. The rate of increase slowed when the index exceeded 0.9. For period II, the maize crop presented a lower degree of vulnerability, with 64% of the area experiencing a yield loss rate between 5% and 30%. The study also determined the required irrigation depth of water for optimal yields, which ranged from 70 to 160 mm during the growing season for all maize crop scenarios in the Department of Cesar. The results of this study can contribute to the consolidation of a database of physical vulnerability and threats of precipitation anomalies on regional and national scales. Overall, this study's evaluation of the physical vulnerability of maize crops can help producers develop better strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate variability and ensure regional food security. La asociación de usuarios del Distrito de Adecuación de Tierras de Gran Escala del Río Zulia (ASOZULIA) Norte de Santander, con un área de influencia de 45.536 hectáreas, está interesada en la planificación productiva de su territorio. Dentro de sus actividades agropecuarias se encuentran el arroz (12.000 a 17.000 ha), la palma de aceite (1.534 ha), cítricos (limón, naranja; 346 ha), caña de azúcar (100 ha) y la ganadería. Su principal sistema de producción durante más de 50 años es el cultivo de arroz, sistema que presenta reducción de la productividad (7 a 3 tha), degradación del suelo y problemas de plagas y enfermedades, debido entre otros al uso continuo del fangueo como sistema de preparación de suelos. Adicionalmente, a pesar de tener el distrito de riego del río Zulia una concesión de 13,5 m3.s1, en épocas de verano la oferta hidrica es mucho menor como, por ejemplo, la correspondiente a los meses de febrero a marzo de 2016, con un caudal en la bocatoma del distrito de 10,8 m3s'y una captación real del distrito de solo 6 m.s' Asimismo, la construcción del nuevo acueducto para el área metropolitana de la ciudad de Cúcuta tomará 2,95 m3s del caudal antes de la bocatoma que provee agua al distrito, lo que disminuirá aún más la disponibilidad de agua para riego en esa región. Por lo anterior, se requiere la recuperación de los suelos para el establecimiento de nuevos sistemas productivos que demanden un menor consumo de agua y sean una alternativa viable para los productores. 5. Quality control and filling of daily temperature and precipitation time series in Colombia

- Abstract
During the last several years, there has been an increase in the monitoring of meteorological phenomena. For accurate analysis of the spatial and temporal variability of precipitation as well as air temperature, recorded observations must be trustworthy. Therefore, one must implement effective methods for assuring data quality. This paper implements meteorological data quality controls using open-source Python code. We implemented six types of automatic quality-control processes for climatic data series. This work also introduces a quality index for meteorological time series data and uses three-dimensional kriging to fill in missing data. We apply these methods to daily historical data from 1980 to 2019 from the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies of Colombia. Applying the quality-control process to the available meteorological stations allows us to validate more than 90 % of the time series. We find that approximately 6.4 %, 4.4 %, 5.4 %, and 5.5 % of the data are flagged as atypical values in the time series of minimum temperature, mean temperature, maximum temperature, and precipitation, respectively. We verified the accuracy of the quality-control procedures by introducing multiplicative random errors and computing the probabilities of false positive and false negative errors. This procedure emphasizes the relationships between neighboring meteorological stations to detect errors in the data, even if they belong to different climatic regions. This analysis also implements a method of reconstructing missing data in the absence of a trustworthy reference time series.
