Spray cooling is an effective solution for high heat flux dissipation challenges. Accurate prediction of heat transfer efficiency by numerical simulation can reduce the cost of spray cooling in engineering applications. To improve the accuracy of numerical simulation, this study develops a mathematical model for droplet collision and heat transfer response based on experimental data. In spray cooling experiments, droplets are sprayed onto a 200 °C aluminum alloy thermal wall using an atomizing nozzle, temperature is monitored, and the curve of heat flux variation during cooling is estimated from temperature data. Analysis of high-speed photography results provides the droplet diameter, velocity, and spatial distribution. We discover that the average Weber number of droplets, We, has a power-law relationship with the volumetric flow rate, Q, as We ∼ Q1.55. The velocity and position of spray droplets approximately follow a normal distribution, while the diameter follows a Log-normal distribution. By analyzing the relation between heat flux and spray distribution, an experimental-data-based model, named Droplet Collision-Associated Heat Transfer Model, is designed. Integrating this experimental-data-based model with the discrete phase model (DPM), the heat transfer evolution process in spray cooling is simulated with high reliability. Particles sources are generated based on the experimentally obtained droplet parameter probability distributions, DPM is used to capture the trajectories of droplets, and the droplet impact heat transfer correlation model calculates the thermal response of the wall. Compared with experimental results, the simulation error is only 7.49%. Simulation results indicate that spray cooling at high flow rates has better temperature uniformity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the evolution of flow structures and large-scale circulations (LSC) in Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC) using liquid carbon dioxide as the working medium. In this experiment, a transparent sapphire pressure vessel with observable internal flow was designed, and different temperature differences were applied between the upper and the lower surfaces of the fluid to obtain different Rayleigh numbers (Ra). We employed proper orthogonal decomposition and reconstruction to extract internal flow structures from the shadowgraphy images. We used optical flow techniques to acquire the velocity field of the flow, and we reconstructed the temperature field inside the supercritical fluid using the relationship between shadowgraphy images and refractive index. It is clearly observed that the RBC begins to produce different flow structures under a small temperature difference of 0.4 °C. As the number of Ra increases, the number and the speed of plumes increase, and the morphology of plumes gradually becomes elongated. When Ra exceeds a certain critical value, an LSC structure appears in the flow field, and the plumes translate laterally with the large-scale circulation, and the disorder of the vortex structure in the central flow region increases significantly. Three typical flow structures were observed: (1) single plume, (2) thermal boundary layer traveling waves, and (3) Rayleigh–Taylor instability waves. We believe that the traveling wave structure is the precursor to the single plume. The temperature field analysis of the three structures was carried out, and the velocity of the typical plume was calculated by the optical flow method. It was found that LSC transitioned from oval to square shape with the increase in Ra, and the internal plume Reynolds number slowly increased with the increase in Ra. By the in-depth study of the thermal turbulence characteristics and the coherent structure evolution law of RBC, this paper provides experimental support for revealing the mechanism of enhanced heat transfer in energy system with a liquid CO2 working fluid. A fluid experiment was conducted on China's SJ10 satellite to assess the instability of thermocapillary convection under microgravity. Oscillations of thermocapillary convection in an annular pool were investigated when the difference in temperature exceeded a certain threshold. Dynamics and transitions of the wave pattern were observed using an infrared camera. This work is concerned with the effect of the surface configuration on the wave patterns. There are 3 types of surface configurations that depend on the volume ratio: Vr < 0.77 (zone 1), 0.77 < Vr < 1 (zone 2), and Vr > 1 (zone 3). An irregular local wave occurs at Vr < 0.65, and a regular azimuthal wave occurs at Vr > 0.65. We observed the regular wave with the wavenumber m = 3 in zone 1 and zone 3 and the competition between m = 3 and m = 4 in zone 2. The nonlinear dynamics of traveling waves, standing waves, and counterpropagating waves were studied. The standing wave appears near the onset and transitions to the traveling wave. With a similar mechanism, counterpropagating waves with m = 3 and m = 4 occur in some cases at the onset. Additionally, counterpropagating waves also act as a transitional mode when the traveling wave transitions from m = 4 to m = 3. The traveling wave is very stable, but it develops into standing waves or Benjamin-Feir instability under highly supercritical conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hollow-structured nanomaterials with fluorescent properties are extremely attractive for image-guided cancer therapy. In this paper, sub-100 nm and hydrophilic NaYF4 upconversion (UC) hollow nanospheres (HNSs) with multicolor UC luminescence and drug-delivery properties were successfully prepared by a facile one-pot template-free hydrothermal route using polyetherimide (PEI) polymer as the stabilizing agent. XRD, SEM, TEM, and N2-adsorption/desorption were used to characterize the as-obtained products. The growth mechanism of the HNSs has been systematically investigated on the basis of the Ostwald ripening. Under 980 nm excitation, UC emissions of HNSs can be tuned by a simple change of the concentration or combination of various upconverters. As a result, the PEI-coated HNSs could be used as efficient probes for in vitro upconversion luminescence (UCL) cell imaging. Furthermore, a doxorubicin storage/release behavior and cancer-cell-killing ability investigation reveal that the product has the potential to be a drug carrier for cancer therapy.
