Analytical solution of initial value problem for the fractional oscillation equation with two Caputo fractional derivatives x′′(t)+aDtαx(t)+cx′(t)+bDtβx(t)+kx(t)=q(t)$$ {x}&#x0005E;{\prime \prime }(t)&#x0002B;a{D}_t&#x0005E;{\alpha }x(t)&#x0002B;c{x}&#x0005E;{\prime }(t)&#x0002B;b{D}_t&#x0005E;{\beta }x(t)&#x0002B; kx(t)&#x0003D;q(t) $$, where the coefficients and orders satisfy a,b,c,k>0,1<α≤2$$ a,b,c,k>0,1<\alpha \le 2 $$ and 0<β≤1$$ 0<\beta \le 1 $$, is investigated by using the Laplace transform and complex inverse integral method on the principal Riemann surface. It is proved by using the argument principle that the characteristic equation has a pair of conjugated simple complex roots with a negative real part on the principal Riemann surface under the assumption that α$$ \alpha $$ and β$$ \beta $$ are not both integers. Then three fundamental solutions, the unit impulse response, the unit initial displacement response, and the unit initial rate response, are derived analytically. Each of these solutions is expressed into a superposition of a classical damped oscillation decaying exponentially and a real Laplace integration decaying in a negative power law. Finally, the asymptotic behaviors of these analytical solutions for sufficiently large t$$ t $$ are determined as monotonous decays in a power of negative exponent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The steady state response of a fractional order vibration system subject to harmonic excitation was studied by using the fractional derivative operator −∞Dtβ,${}_{-\infty} D_t^\beta,$where the order β is a real number satisfying 0 ≤ β ≤ 2. We derived that the fractional derivative contributes to the viscoelasticity if 0 < β < 1, while it contributes to the viscous inertia if 1 < β < 2. Thus the fractional derivative can represent the “spring-pot” element and also the “inerterpot” element proposed in the present article. The viscosity contribution coefficient, elasticity contribution coefficient, inertia contribution coefficient, amplitude-frequency relation, phase-frequency relation, and influence of the order are discussed in detail. The results show that fractional derivatives are applicable for characterizing the viscoelasticity and viscous inertia of materials.

We conduct a detailed study and comparison for the one-degree-of-freedom steady-state vibrations under harmonic driving with a single fractional-order derivative and a distributed-order derivative. For each of the two vibration systems, we consider the stiffness contribution factor and damping contribution factor of the term of fractional derivatives, the amplitude and the phase difference for the response. The effects of driving frequency on these response quantities are discussed. Also the influences of the order α of the fractional derivative and the parameter γ parameterizing the weight function in the distributed-order derivative are analyzed. Two cases display similar response behaviors, but the stiffness contribution factor and damping contribution factor of the distributed-order derivative are almost monotonic change with the parameter γ, not exactly like the case of single fractional-order derivative for the order α. The case of the distributed-order derivative provides us more options for the weight function and parameters.

In this paper, we investigate the solution of the fractional vibration equation, where the damping term is characterized by means of the Caputo fractional derivative with the order α satisfying 0 < α < 1 or 1 < α < 2. Detailed analysis for the fundamental solution y(t) is carried out through the Laplace transform and its complex inversion integral formula. We conclude that y(t) is ultimately positive, and ultimately decreases monotonically and approaches zero for the case of 0 < α < 1, while y(t) is ultimately negative, and ultimately increases monotonically and approaches zero for the case of 1 < α < 2. We also consider the number of zeros, the maximum zero and the maximum extreme point of the fundamental solution y(t) for specified values of the coefficients and fractional order.

In this work, we consider a fractional nonlinear vibration system of Duffing type with harmonic excitation by using the fractional derivative operator -∞−1Dαt and the averaging method. We derive the steady-state periodic response and the amplitude-frequency and phase-frequency relations. Jumping phenomena caused by the nonlinear term and resonance peaks are displayed, which is similar to the integer-order case. It is possible that a minimum of the amplitude exists before the resonance appears for some values of the modelling parameters, which is a feature for the fractional case. The effects of the parameters in the fractional derivative term on the amplitude-frequency curve are discussed.

In this paper, we present a reliable algorithm to calculate positive solutions of homogeneous nonlinear boundary value problems (BVPs). The algorithm converts the nonlinear BVP to an equivalent nonlinear Fredholm– Volterra integral equation.We employ the multistage Adomian decomposition method for BVPs on two or more subintervals of the domain of validity, and then solve the matching equation for the flux at the interior point, or interior points, to determine the solution. Several numerical examples are used to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed scheme to interpolate the interior values of the solution between boundary points. Furthermore we demonstrate two novel techniques to accelerate the rate of convergence of our decomposition series solutions by increasing the number of subintervals and adjusting the lengths of subintervals in the multistage Adomian decomposition method for BVPs.
