Abstract: Precise direct cosmic-ray (CR) measurements provide an important probe to study the energetic particle sources in our Galaxy, and the interstellar environment through which these particles propagate. Uncertainties on hadronic models, ion-nucleon cross sections in particular, are currently the limiting factor towards obtaining more accurate CR ion flux measurements with calorimetric space-based experiments. We present an energy-dependent measurement of the inelastic cross section of protons and helium-4 nuclei (alpha particles) on a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ target, using 88 months of data collected by the DAMPE space mission. The kinetic energy range per nucleon of the measurement points ranges from 18 GeV to 9 TeV for protons, and from 5 GeV/n to 3 TeV/n for helium-4 nuclei. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the CR flux normalisation. 2. Multiple and spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable {\alpha}-MoO3 trilayers

Abstract: The assembling of twisted stacks of van der Waals (vdW) materials had led to the discovery of a profusion of remarkable physical phenomena in recent years, as it provides a means to accurately control and harness electronic band structures. This has given birth to the so-called field of twistronics. An analogous concept has been developed for highly confined polaritons, or nanolight, in twisted bilayers of strongly anisotropic vdW materials, extending the field to the twistoptics realm. In this case, the emergence of a topological transition of the polaritonic dispersion at a given twist angle (photonic magic angle) results in the propagation of nanolight along one specific direction (canalization regime), holding promises for unprecedented control of the flow of energy at the nanoscale. However, there is a fundamental limitation in twistoptics that critically impedes such control: there is only one photonic magic angle (and thus canalization direction) in a twisted bilayer and it is fixed for each incident frequency. Here, we overcome this limitation by demonstrating the existence of multiple spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable twisted vdW trilayers. As a result, we show that canalization of nanolight can be programmed at will along any desired in-plane direction in a single device, and, importantly, within broad spectral ranges of up to 70 cm-1. Our findings lay the foundation for robust and widely tunable twistoptics, opening the door for applications in nanophotonics where on-demand control of energy at the nanoscale is crucial, such as thermal management, nanoimaging or entanglement of quantum emitters., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is an age-related degenerative spinal disease characterized by the loss of disc height, hydration, and integrity, leading to pain and reduced mobility. Although the pathogenesis of IDD is not fully understood, recent studies suggest that dysbiosis of the gut microbiome may accelerate the progression of IDD through multiple mechanisms. This article begins by discussing the potential relationship between GM dysbiosis and human diseases, followed by a comprehensive review of the regulatory mechanisms of GM in skeletal diseases within the gut-disc axis framework. Furthermore, it explores three potential pathways through which GM dysbiosis may mediate the development of IDD: immunomodulation, bacterial translocation and colonization, and the decomposition and absorption of intestinal metabolites. These pathways can disrupt disc cell homeostasis and promote degenerative changes. Finally, this paper summarizes for the first time the potential therapeutic approaches for delaying IDD by targeting the gut-disc axis, providing new insights into the pathogenesis and regenerative repair strategies for IDD.Keywords: intervertebral disc degeneration, microbiome, inflammation, immunity, metabolism

The primary endpoint was the occurrence of symptomatic RP (Grade ≥ 2), as defined by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 5.0. Clinical and lung dosimetric parameters were analyzed to determine their associations with symptomatic RP. Dosimetric parameters included mean lung dose (MLD) and the percentage of lung volume receiving ≥ 10 Gy (V10), ≥ 20 Gy (V20), ≥ 30 Gy (V30), and ≥ 40 Gy (V40). Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to predict the risk of developing symptomatic RP to establish optimal threshold values for each dosimetric predictor.Results: Among the 118 patients included, the incidence of symptomatic RP was 25.4%. Tumor locations, intervals between immunotherapy and radiotherapy, and MLD, V10, V20, V30, and V40 were identified as independent risk factors for symptomatic RP. The area under the curve (AUC) values for MLD, V10, V20, V30, and V40 were 0.788 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.704– 0.873), 0.789 (95% CI 0.705– 0.874), 0.791 (95% CI 0.706– 0.876), 0.784 (95% CI 0.697– 0.871), and 0.749 (95% CI 0.656– 0.842), respectively. The optimal threshold values for MLD, V10, V20, V30, and V40 were 9.7 Gy, 26.3%, 15.9%, 13.3%, and 8.6%, respectively. These thresholds are lower than current guideline recommendations, and maintaining dosimetric parameters below these values resulted in a cumulative symptomatic RP incidence of < 12%.Conclusion: The recommended dose thresholds for MLD, V10, V20, V30, and V40 are lower than the current guidelines, underscoring the importance of radiotherapy planning to minimize symptomatic RP occurrence in patients receiving ICI-TRT.Keywords: radiation therapy, immunotherapy, non-small-cell lung cancer, radiation pneumonitis, risk factors

5. Recovering high-quality FODs from a reduced number of diffusion-weighted images using a model-driven deep learning architecture

Abstract: Fibre orientation distribution (FOD) reconstruction using deep learning has the potential to produce accurate FODs from a reduced number of diffusion-weighted images (DWIs), decreasing total imaging time. Diffusion acquisition invariant representations of the DWI signals are typically used as input to these methods to ensure that they can be applied flexibly to data with different b-vectors and b-values; however, this means the network cannot condition its output directly on the DWI signal. In this work, we propose a spherical deconvolution network, a model-driven deep learning FOD reconstruction architecture, that ensures intermediate and output FODs produced by the network are consistent with the input DWI signals. Furthermore, we implement a fixel classification penalty within our loss function, encouraging the network to produce FODs that can subsequently be segmented into the correct number of fixels and improve downstream fixel-based analysis. Our results show that the model-based deep learning architecture achieves competitive performance compared to a state-of-the-art FOD super-resolution network, FOD-Net. Moreover, we show that the fixel classification penalty can be tuned to offer improved performance with respect to metrics that rely on accurately segmented of FODs. Abstract: Recent observations of the light component of the cosmic-ray spectrum have revealed unexpected features that motivate further and more precise measurements up to the highest energies. The Dark Matter Particle Explorer is a satellite-based cosmic-ray experiment that has been operational since December 2015, continuously collecting data on high-energy cosmic particles with very good statistics, energy resolution, and particle identification capabilities. In this work, the latest measurements of the energy spectrum of proton+helium in the energy range from 46 GeV to 464 TeV are presented. Among the most distinctive features of the spectrum, a spectral hardening at 600 GeV has been observed, along with a softening at 29 TeV measured with a 6.6{\sigma} significance. Moreover, the detector features and the analysis approach allowed for the extension of the spectral measurement up to the sub-PeV region. They were randomly divided into training (n = 18645) and validation (n = 7992) sets in a 7:3 ratio. Firstly, the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression algorithm was employed for variable selection. Subsequently, a multifactor Logistic regression analysis was conducted to establish the predictive model, accompanied by nomograms. Thirdly, model validation was performed using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, Harrell’s concordance index (C-index), calibration plots, and Decision Curve Analysis (DCA), followed by internal validation.Results: In this study, six predictive indicators were selected, including Body Mass Index, Triglycerides, Blood Pressure, High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, and Fasting Blood Glucose. The model demonstrated excellent predictive performance, with an AUC of 0.978 (0.976– 0.980) for the training set and 0.977 (0.974– 0.980) for the validation set in the nomogram. Calibration curves indicated that the model possessed good calibration ability (Training set: Emax 0.081, Eavg 0.005, P = 0.580; Validation set: Emax 0.062, Eavg 0.007, P = 0.829). Furthermore, decision curve analysis suggested that applying the nomogram for diagnosis is more beneficial when the threshold probability of MetS is less than 89%, compared to either treating-all or treating-none at all.Conclusion: We developed and validated a nomogram based on MetS risk factors, which can effectively predict the occurrence of MetS. The proposed nomogram demonstrates significant discriminative ability and clinical applicability. Currently, research on the prognostic value of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) for predicting the mortality of SFTS patients, especially death within 7 days is limited.Methods: Between May 2011 and October 2022, clinical and laboratory data on admission of consecutive SFTS cases were collected from six medical centres in China. The clinical endpoint was in-hospital all-cause death within seven days. Risk factors of myocardial injury and death were analysed using multivariable regression models. Prognostic models were established using Cox regression and performance of indicators was evaluated in terms of calibration, discrimination.Results: A total of 1379 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled, in which 686 subjects were included for analysis. The median age was 66 years, with 48.1% of male. Eighty-seven patients died within seven days and 396 patients diagnosed with myocardial injury during hospitalization. Non-survivors had significant higher levels of cardiac indices than survivors, including cTnI, aspartic transaminase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Elevated levels of cTnI (HR = 1.058, 95% CI:1.032– 1.085), AST (HR = 1.191, 95% CI:1.150– 1.234) and LDH (HR = 1.019, 95% CI:1.009– 1.029) predicted risk of early in-hospital mortality. cTnI model performed best, with area under curve of 0.850 (0.774– 0.926) and concordance index of 0.842, respectively. Statistical differences were found between high and low levels of cTnI for mortality (P< 0.001) using 0.35 ng/mL as the optimal cut-off.Conclusion: The risk of early in-hospital death can be predicted by cTnI. Abstract: Spectrum handoff procedures occur when the primary users appear in the licensed band temporary occupied by the cognitive radio (CR) users and aim to help the CR users to vacate the spectrum rapidly and find available channel to resume the transmission. However, a spectrum handoff scheme that comprehensively considers channel selection, handoff decision as well as space domain handoff is yet undeveloped. In this paper we present a complete optimal spectrum handoff scheme for cognitive radio mobile ad hoc networks. First, we design a spectrum selection mechanism to allow CR users optimally choose the appropriate channel. The spectrum idleness prediction algorithm is utilized based on developing a cooperative spectrum searching approach. Through combining the estimated transmission time, the PU appearance probability and the mean spectrum availability time are integrated to develop the optimal spectrum handoff scheme. Moreover, as one part of the proposed scheme, a geo-location approach is utilized to deal with the space domain handoff. The complete scheme is evaluated through a comprehensive simulation study, and results reveal significant improvements in handoff times and transmission efficiency over conventional approaches.

Abstract: More than a century after the performance of the oil drop experiment, the possible existence of fractionally charged particles FCP still remains unsettled. The search for FCPs is crucial for some extensions of the Standard Model in particle physics. Most of the previously conducted searches for FCPs in cosmic rays were based on experiments underground or at high altitudes. However, there have been few searches for FCPs in cosmic rays carried out in orbit other than AMS-01 flown by a space shuttle and BESS by a balloon at the top of the atmosphere. In this study, we conduct an FCP search in space based on on-orbit data obtained using the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite over a period of five years. Unlike underground experiments, which require an FCP energy of the order of hundreds of GeV, our FCP search starts at only a few GeV. An upper limit of $6.2\times 10^{-10}~~\mathrm{cm^{-2}sr^{-1} s^{-1}}$ is obtained for the flux. The primary therapeutic interventions for UC consist of pharmacological management to control inflammation and promote mucosal healing and surgical interventions. The available drugs effectively control and decelerate the progression of UC in most patients; nonetheless, their long-term administration can exert adverse effects and influence the therapeutic effect. Plant essential oils (EOs) refer to a group of hydrophobic aromatic volatile substances. EOs have garnered considerable attention in both domestic and international research because of their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. They include peppermint, peppercorns, rosemary, and lavender, among others. Researchers have investigated the role of EOs in medicine and have elucidated their potential to mitigate the detrimental effects of UC through their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidepressant, and anti-insomnia properties as well as their ability to regulate the intestinal flora. Furthermore, EOs exert minimal toxic adverse effects, further enhancing their appeal for therapeutic applications. However, these speculations are based on theoretical experiments, thereby warranting more clinical studies to confirm their effectiveness and safety. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the advancements in utilizing natural medicine EOs for UC prevention and treatment. We will explore the potential pathogenesis of UC and examine the role of EOs therapy in basic research, quality stability, and management specification of inadequate EOs for UC treatment. This study aimed to understand the expression profiles of circRNAs in myocardial fibrosis with DCM, exploring the possible biomarkers and therapeutic targets for DCM.Methods: At 21 weeks of age, db/db mice established the type 2 DCM model measured by echocardiography, and the cardiac tissue was extracted for Hematoxylin–eosin, Masson’s trichrome staining, and transmission electron microscopy. Subsequently, the expression profile of circRNAs in myocardial fibrosis of db/db mice was constructed using microarray hybridization and verified by real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. A circRNA–microRNA–messenger RNA coexpression network was constructed, Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis were done.Results: Compared with normal control mice, db/db mice had 77 upregulated circRNAs and 135 downregulated circRNAs in their chromosomes (fold change ≥ 1.5, P ≤ 0.05). Moreover, the enrichment analysis of circRNA host genes showed that these differentially expressed circRNAs were mainly involved in mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways. CircPHF20L1, circCLASP1, and circSLC8A1 were the key circRNAs. Abstract: Optical nanoresonators are fundamental building blocks in a number of nanotechnology applications (e.g. in spectroscopy) due to their ability to efficiently confine light at the nanoscale. Recently, nanoresonators based on the excitation of phonon polaritons (PhPs) $-$ light coupled to lattice vibrations $-$ in polar crystals (e.g. SiC, or h-BN) have attracted much attention due to their strong field confinement, high-quality factors, and potential to enhance the photonic density of states at mid-infrared (IR) frequencies. Here, we go one step further by introducing PhPs nanoresonators that not only exhibit these extraordinary properties but also incorporate a new degree of freedom $-$ twist tuning, i.e. the possibility to be spectrally controlled by a simple rotation. To that end, we both take advantage of the low-loss in-plane hyperbolic propagation of PhPs in the van der Waals crystal $\alpha$-MoO$_3$, and realize dielectric engineering of a pristine $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ slab placed on top of metal ribbon grating, which preserves the high-quality of the polaritonic resonances. By simple rotating the $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ slab in the plane (from 0 to 45$^{\circ}$), we demonstrate via far- and near-field measurements that the narrow polaritonic resonances (with quality factors Q up to 200) can be tuned in a broad range (up to 32 cm$^{-1}$, i.e up 6 ~ times its full width at half maximum, FWHM ~ 5 cm$^{-1}$). 18. Quantum yield of an emitter proximate to nanostructures: a quantitative understanding

Abstract: Exciton-surface plasmon coupling is at the heart of the most elementary light-matter interactions and is a result of not only an intrinsic property of the emitter but that of emitter-environment interaction. Thus, change of electromagnetic environment, as in case of metallic nanoplasmonic structures and an emitter, significantly modifies the near field light-matter interaction, which leads to energy transfer in the form of exciton between metallic nanostructure and the emitter. However, this mechanism remains largely unexplored. Here, we developed and applied semi-classical electrodynamics theory and modeling techniques to analyze the energy transfer mechanism in exciton-surface plasmon coupling. The quantum efficiency of an emitter was investigated as a function of the location of the emitter with respect to nanoparticles and their assembles whose local plasmonic field modified by forming complex coupling modes as well as the local dielectric environment. The research provided a theoretical insight into fundamental science of nanophotonics and shed light on unprecedented applications in wide range fields such as ultra-low power lasers, quantum information processing, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and chemical sensing.

Hereditary protein C/S deficiency (hereditary PCD/PSD) not only promotes thrombosis but also activates the inflammatory response, further inducing venous thrombosis. However, conventional treatments such as standard anticoagulant/endovascular therapy (EVT) do not seem to improve prognosis. Anti-inflammatory therapy may be a new way to treat the disease.Methods: We enrolled five patients with acute/subacute severe CVT with hereditary PCD/PSD from January 2020 to July 2022. In addition to standard anticoagulant therapy, all of them were given short-term methylprednisolone pulse therapy. Neurological deficit, increased intracranial pressure, venous recanalization, serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory markers and adverse events were retrospectively described before and after treatment and at 6 months after discharge.Results: Inflammatory indexes of all patients were significantly elevated on admission. After methylprednisolone pulse therapy, serum inflammatory indexes including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (P=0.043); platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (P=0.043); systemic immune inflammatory index (P=0.043); interleukin-6 (P=0.043) and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (P=0.022) reduced dramatically compared with baseline. CSF inflammatory indexes had a decreasing trend compared with baseline (P> 0.05). In terms of venous recanalization, one patient achieved complete recanalization, four patients obtained partial recanalization. Compared with baseline on admission, the NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and intracranial pressure were all considerably lower at discharge (P=0.029, P=0.041 and P=0.017). At 6-month follow-up, NIHSS and mRS further declined. During hospitalization and 6-month follow-up, none of the five patients experienced severe steroid-related adverse effects such as recurrence of venous thrombosis, spontaneous fracture or osteonecrosis, and gastroduodenal ulcer.Conclusion: Acute/subacute severe CVT with hereditary PCD/PSD has high levels of inflammation. In addition to conventional anticoagulant therapy, early anti-inflammatory therapy using steroids may be necessary. Clinical data were obtained from medical records, and all isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, multi locus sequence typing, capsular serotypes, resistant gene profiles and virulence gene profiles. The synergistic activity was performed by microdilution checkerboard method.Results: Our study found differences in the clinical characteristics of CRKP between regions in Shanxi. Sequence type (ST) 11 was the dominant ST in Shanxi; however, the ST types in Shanxi had become more diverse over time and the proportion of STs showed a more balanced distribution with a significant decrease in ST11. NDM was the most common carbapenemase in Shanxi. In addition, the STs, carbapenemases, serotypes and virulence gene distribution varied by region in Shanxi. However, existing scales were insufficient to evaluate the overall severity of CVT. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a CVT severity scale.Methods: Items 1– 11 were directly derived from NIHSS. New items were generated from a literature review and focus group discussion. A total of 170 CVT patients were prospectively recruited from 26 top tertiary hospitals in China Mainland from January 2021 to May 2022 to validate the CVT severity scale. The CVT severity scale, NIHSS, mRS and GCS were rated at admission. The lumbar puncture opening pressure was also recorded. Twenty randomly selected CVT patients were rated with the CVT severity scale again 24 hours later. The clinical outcome of CVT was evaluated by mRS at 6 months after baseline.Results: We successfully established a CVT severity scale with 18 items. Exploratory factor analysis showed that 18 items were attributed to factor 1 (focal neurological deficits), factor 2 (diffuse encephalopathy), factor 3 (intracranial hypertension) and factor 4 (cavernous sinus syndrome). CVT severity scale was positively correlated with ICP, NIHSS and mRS, and negatively correlated with GCS at baseline. CVT severity scale > 3 or factor 3 > 2 indicated intracranial hypertension. CVT severity scale > 10 indicated poor clinical outcome at 6 months of follow-up. Meanwhile, CVT severity scale showed high internal consistency and test–retest reliability.Conclusion: The CVT severity scale included 18 items encompassing 4 domains of focal neurological deficits, diffuse encephalopathy, IH and cavernous sinus syndrome. CVT severity scale correlated well with ICP, NIHSS, mRS and GCS. Patients with CVT severity scale > 10 can be defined as severe CVT. Authentic regulators had the lowest emotional exhaustion. Non-regulators had the lowest flow. No differences emerged in depression or anxiety across clusters.Discussion: Findings partially align with past research showing risks of surface acting in terms of emotional exhaustion. However, all three strategies enhanced flow states. Moreover, dancers’ work strains did not extend to psychological problems, unlike other professions. Possible explanations include training in emotional regulation and flow states in performing. They were randomly assigned to two groups: the remimazolam group (group R) and the propofol group (group P). In group R, remimazolam was administered intravenously during the induction and maintenance of anesthesia, In group P, propofol was used during the induction and maintenance of anesthesia. The incidence of EA was recorded as the primary indicator. Secondary indicators included heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) values at the following moments: 5 min prior to anesthetic induction (T0), 1 min following induction (T1), 5 min after the laryngeal mask was inserted (T2), the beginning of surgery (T3), the moment the laryngeal mask was removed (T4), and the overall incidence of postoperative adverse events (bleeding or splitting of the surgical incision, removal of the intravenous infusion needle, falling off the bed, hypoxemia, and hypertension).Results: The incidence of EA was significantly lower in group R than in group P (10% vs 33%, P < 0.05). At T1, T2, and T3, the HR and MAP values of group R were higher than those of group P (P < 0.05). The overall incidence of postoperative adverse events was significantly lower in group R than in group P (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Remimazolam further reduced the incidence of emergence agitation when compared to propofol during geriatric hip replacement. Abstract: The measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using 4.5 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is reported in this work. A hardening of the spectrum is observed at an energy of about 1.3 TeV, similar to previous observations. In addition, a spectral softening at about 34 TeV is revealed for the first time with large statistics and well controlled systematic uncertainties, with an overall significance of $4.3\sigma$. The DAMPE spectral measurements of both cosmic protons and helium nuclei suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although with current uncertainties a dependence on the number of nucleons cannot be ruled out., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, published in Phys. 26. Planar nano-optics in anisotropic media: anomalous refraction and diffraction-free lensing of highly confined polaritons

Abstract: As one of the most fundamental optical phenomena, refraction between isotropic media is characterized by light bending towards the normal to the boundary when passing from a low- to a high-refractive-index medium. However, in anisotropic media, refraction is a much more exotic phenomenon. The most general case of refraction between two anisotropic media remains unexplored, particularly in natural media and at the nanoscale. Here, we visualize and comprehensively study refraction of electromagnetic waves between two strongly anisotropic (hyperbolic) media, and, importantly, we do it with the use of polaritons confined to the nanoscale in a low-loss natural medium, alpha-MoO3. Our images show refraction of polaritons under the general case in which both the direction of propagation and the wavevector are not collinear. As they traverse planar nanoprisms tailored in alpha-MoO3, refracted polaritons exhibit non-intuitive directions of propagation, enabling us to unveil an exotic optical effect: bending-free refraction. Furthermore, we succeed in developing the first in-plane refractive hyperlens, which yields foci as small as lamdap/6, being lamdap the polariton wavelength (lamda0/50 with respect to the wavelength of light in free space). Our results set the grounds for planar nano-optics in strongly anisotropic media, with potential for unprecedented control of the flow of energy at the nanoscale.

However, studies of the association between lipid profile and SFCT in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in type 2 diabetes remain limited. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between lipid profile and SFCT in patients with PDR.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. The included participants were inpatients who underwent vitrectomy for PDR with type 2 diabetes and contralateral eyes of PDR patients meeting the criteria. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to determine the independent association between lipid profile and SFCT.Results: A total of 131 participants with PDR were enrolled in the final analysis. The average age of the participants was 55.76 ± 9.88 years, and the average SFCT was 276.10 ± 92.92 μm. Multivariate linear regression model results showed that in the fully adjusted model, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) had a negative association with SFCT (β = − 16.51, 95% CI: − 29.57, − 3.46; P = 0.0148; β = − 42.65, 95% CI: − 82.60, − 2.70; P = 0.0390; β = − 17.89, 95% CI: − 33.24, − 2.54; P = 0.0245, respectively), while triglyceride was not significantly associated with SFCT (β = 5.23, 95% CI: − 18.57, 29.02; P = 0.6678). Furthermore, the results of stratified analysis showed that except for triglyceride, the trends of total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and SFCT were consistent among different stratifications in participants.Conclusion: The cholesterol profile had a significant negative association with SFCT in Chinese PDR patients, but triglyceride was not significantly associated with SFCT. We assessed mortality risk factors and multidrug-resistant (MDR) gram-negative BSI predictors.Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study from January 2015 to December 2021, which included adult neutropenic oncohematological patients with confirmed BSIs. We used univariable and multivariable analyses to analyze the risk factors. Each index’s reliability for bacterial BSI diagnosis was assessed using the receiver-operating characteristic curve and area under the curve.Results: A total of 514 isolates were obtained from the 452 patients. The average mortality was 17.71%. Gram-negative organisms were the predominant causes of BSI. Escherichia coli was the most common microorganism (49.90%). The overall variation trend of the isolation rate of MDR and carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria increased. Multivariate analysis indicated that: 1) neutropenia that lasted for more than 7 days, patients ≥ 60 years of age, septic shock, hospitalization for > 20 days, BSI with a carbapenem-resistant strain, and treatment with linezolid or vancomycin in infections lasting less than 30 days were independent mortality risk factors; 2) severe neutropenia exceeding 7 days, unreasonable empirical therapy, and receipt of aminoglycosides or 3rd or 4th generation cephalosporins in infections lasting less than 30 days were independent risk factors of MDR gram-negative bacteria. Procalcitonin, absolute neutrophil count, and white blood cell indicate higher diagnostic accuracy for BSIs. Moreover, bacteria time to detection was better at differentiating Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial infections.Conclusion: We analyzed the risk factors for BSI neutropenic patients with hematological malignancies, the distribution of bacteria, antibiotic resistance, and the changes in clinical parameters. Abstract: Large optical anisotropy observed in a broad spectral range is of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in countless devices. Although a giant anisotropy was recently observed in the mid-infrared wavelength range, for visible and near-infrared spectral intervals, the problem remains acute with the highest reported birefringence values of 0.8 in BaTiS3 and h-BN crystals. This inspired an intensive search for giant optical anisotropy among natural and artificial materials. Here, we demonstrate that layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provide an answer to this quest owing to their fundamental differences between intralayer strong covalent bonding and weak interlayer van der Walls interaction. To do this, we carried out a correlative far- and near-field characterization validated by first-principle calculations that reveals an unprecedented birefringence of 1.5 in the infrared and 3 in the visible light for MoS2. Our findings demonstrate that this outstanding anisotropy allows for tackling the diffraction limit enabling an avenue for on-chip next-generation photonics., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

31. Electronic nature of chiral charge order in the kagome superconductor Cs V3Sb5

Abstract: Kagome superconductors with TC up to 7 K have been discovered for over 40 y. Recently, unconventional chiral charge order has been reported in kagome superconductor KV3Sb5, with an ordering temperature of one order of magnitude higher than the TC. However, the chirality of the charge order has not been reported in the cousin kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5, and the electronic nature of the chirality remains elusive. In this paper, we report the observation of electronic chiral charge order in CsV3Sb5 via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observe a 2 × 2 charge modulation and a 1 × 4 superlattice in both topographic data and tunneling spectroscopy. 2 × 2 charge modulation is highly anticipated as a charge order by fundamental kagome lattice models at van Hove filling, and is shown to exhibit intrinsic chirality. We find that the 1 × 4 superlattices form various small domain walls, and can be a surface effect as supported by our first-principles calculations. Crucially, we find that the amplitude of the energy gap opened by the charge order exhibits real-space modulations, and features 2 × 2 wave vectors with chirality, highlighting the electronic nature of the chiral charge order. STM study at 0.4 K reveals a superconducting energy gap with a gap size 2Δ=0.85meV, which estimates a moderate superconductivity coupling strength with 2Δ/kBTC=3.9. When further applying a c-axis magnetic field, vortex core bound states are observed within this gap, indicative of clean-limit superconductivity.

Abstract: The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with two and a half years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with a high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Abstract: The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a satellite-based cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, was launched on December 17, 2015, and began its on-orbit operation on December 24, 2015. In this work we document the on-orbit calibration procedures used by DAMPE and report the calibration results of the Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD), the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), the BGO imaging calorimeter (BGO), and the Neutron Detector (NUD). The results are obtained using Galactic cosmic rays, bright known GeV gamma-ray sources, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each sub-detector. The determination of the boundary of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the measurement of the live time, and the alignments of the detectors are also introduced. The calibration results demonstrate the stability of the detectors in almost two years of the on-orbit operation.

However, the prognosis of resectable (stage I–IIIA) lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) has not been thoroughly investigated at genomic and transcriptional levels.Methods: Data of genomic alterations and transcriptional-level changes of 355 stage I–IIIA LUSC patients were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, together with the clinicopathological information (training cohort). A validation cohort of 91 patients was retrospectively recruited. Data were analyzed and figures were plotted using the R software.Results: Training cohort was established with 355 patients. TP53 (78%), TTN (68%), CSMD3 (39%), MUT16 (36%) and RYR2 (36%) were genes with the highest mutational frequency. BRINP3, COL11A1, GRIN2B, MUC5B, NLRP3 and TENM3 exhibited significant higher mutational frequency in stage III (P < 0.05). Patients with stage III also exhibited significantly higher tumor mutational burden (TMB) than those with stage I (P < 0.01). The mutational status of 10 genes were found to have significant stratification on patient prognosis. TMB at threshold of 25 percentile (TMB = 2.39 muts/Mb) also significantly stratified the patient prognosis (P = 0.0003). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed TTN, ADGRB3, MYH7 and MYH15 mutational status and TMB as independent risk factors. Further analysis of transcriptional profile revealed many significantly up- and down-regulated genes, and multivariate analysis found the transcriptional levels of seven genes as independent risk factors. Significant factors from the multivariate analyses were used to establish a Nomogram model to quantify the risk in prognosis of individual LUSC patients. The model was validated with a cohort containing 91 patients, which showed good predicting efficacy and consistency.Conclusion: The influencing factors of prognosis of stage I–III LUSC patients have been revealed. Risk factors including gender, T stage, cancer location, and the mutational and transcriptional status of several genes were used to establish a Nomogram model to assess the patient prognosis. The present study assessed the clinical and microbiological characteristics of NI patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and investigated the clinical impact and risk factors for NI in ICU patients.Patients and Methods: An observational study was conducted in an adult general ICU. The electronic medical records of all patients admitted to the ICU for > 2 days from 2018– 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. Multivariate regression models were used to analyze the risk factors for NI in ICU patients. Propensity score-matching (PSM) was used to control the confounding factors between the case and control groups, thus analyzing the clinical impact of NIs.Results: The present study included 2425 patient admissions, of which 231 (9.53%) had NI. Acinetobacter baumannii (33.0%) was the most common bacteria. Long-term immunosuppressive therapy, disturbance of consciousness, blood transfusion, multiple organ dysfunction syndromes (MODS), treatment with three or more antibiotics, mechanical ventilation (MV), tracheotomy, the urinary catheter (UC), nasogastric catheter, and central venous catheter (CVC) were risk factors for NI in the ICU patients. After PSM, patients with NI had a prolonged length of stay (LOS) in the ICU and hospital, significant hospitalization expenses (all p< 0.001), increased mortality (p=0.027), and predicted mortality (p=0.007). The differences in the ICU and hospital LOSs among three pathogens were statistically significant (p< 0.001); the results of the Escherichia coli infection group were lower than the other two pathogenic groups.Conclusion: NI was associated with poor outcomes. Abstract: MOTIVATION:Polygenic risk score (PRS) methods based on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have a potential for predicting the risk of developing complex diseases and are expected to become more accurate with larger training datasets and innovative statistical methods. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) is often used to evaluate the performance of PRSs, which requires individual genotypic and phenotypic data in an independent GWAS validation dataset. We are motivated to develop methods for approximating AUC of PRSs based on the summary level data of the validation dataset, which will greatly facilitate the development of PRS models for complex diseases. RESULTS:We develop statistical methods and an R package SummaryAUC for approximating the AUC and its variance of a PRS when only the summary level data of the validation dataset are available. SummaryAUC can be applied to PRSs with SNPs either genotyped or imputed in the validation dataset. We examined the performance of SummaryAUC using a large-scale GWAS of schizophrenia. We tested whether this social distance might reduce trust, with a negative impact on job performance. The negative impact might be especially strong for employees with a high need for social approval (NFSA).Methods: Full-time employees (N = 246; 51.63% male, Mage = 35.07, SD = 8.62) in Eastern China completed anonymous questionnaires. The data were collected in three waves with a 2-week interval between each wave. The SPSS macro PROCESS was used to test all research hypotheses.Results: Regression-based analyses were used to test a moderated serial mediation model. Leader phubbing was associated with employees’ poorer job performance, and this association was mediated by social distance and in turn, low trust. The negative effects of leader phubbing were stronger for employees with a higher NFSA.Conclusion: This study adds new evidence to the literature on phubbing by showing that employees’ perceptions of leader phubbing might hinder employee job performance. Furthermore, the boundary condition of employee NFSA was emphasized and further expanded the literature in this field. Data were obtained from Hospital Information System (HIS) and microbiology department records. The risk factors for mortality and acquiring MDR, ESBLs-producing and CR GNBSI were analyzed by univariable and multivariable analysis.Results: A total of 1018 GNBSI cases were collected. A majority of GNBSI patients were in hematology ward (23.77%). There were 38.61% patients who were assigned in the 41– 60 age group. Escherichia coli was the most common gram-negative organism (49.90%). Among isolates of GNBSI, 40.47% were found to be MDR strains, 34.09% were found to be ESBLs-producing strains and 7.06% were found to be CR strains. Escherichia coli was the most common MDR (71.36%) and ESBLs-producing strain (77.81%). Acinetobacter baumannii was the most common CR isolate (46.15%). Multivariate analysis indicated that diabetes mellitus, solid organ tumor, non-fermentative bacteria, MDR strain, central venous cannula, urinary catheter, therapy with carbapenems or tigecycline prior 30 days of infection were independent mortality risk factors for GNBSIs. Over all, therapy with tigecycline prior 30 days of infection was the mutual predictor for mortality of GNBSI, acquiring MDR, ESBLs-producing and CR GNBSI (OR, 8.221, OR, 3.963, OR, 3.588, OR, 9.222, respectively, all p < 0.001).Conclusion: Collectively, our study implies that patients who were diagnosed as GNBSI had a younger age. Therapy with tigecycline was the mutual and paramount predictor for mortality of GNBSI, acquiring MDR, ESBLs-producing and CR GNBSI. In addition, the expression of inflammatory markers was assessed by Western blot and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The secretion of inflammatory cytokines was measured by ELISA.Results: Prohibitin was downregulated in emphysema mouse tissues compared with control experiments. Consistently, CSE inhibited both the protein and RNA levels of prohibitin in hPMECs in a dose-dependent manner. Gain-of-function experiments indicated that CSE induced collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and loss of ATP, while prohibitin improved mitochondrial function. CSE induced robust ROS production and oxidative DNA damage, while prohibitin decreased this damage. Upregulation of prohibitin protected the apoptosis of hPMECs from CSE. Overexpression of prohibitin significantly reduced the levels of the main proinflammatory cytokines. Finally, prohibitin inhibited nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65 accumulation and IκBα degradation induced by CSE.Conclusion: The current findings suggest that CSE-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, cell apoptosis and inflammation in hPMECs were reduced by overexpression of prohibitin. Abstract: High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $\gamma$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, Nature in press, doi:10.1038/nature24475

Abstract: The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to $\sim 10$ TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calibrations performed on ground. Abstract: Topological insulators (TIs) are quantum materials with topologically protected surface states surrounding an insulating bulk. However, defect-induced bulk conduction often dominates transport properties in most TI materials, obscuring the Dirac surface states. In order to realize intrinsic topological insulating properties, it is thus of great significance to identify the spatial distribution of defects, understand their formation mechanism, and finally control or eliminate their influence. Here, the electronic heterogeneity in polyol-synthesized Bi2Se3 and chemical vapor deposition-grown Sb2Te3 nanocrystals is systematically investigated by multimodal atomic-to-mesoscale resolution imaging. In particular, by combining the Drude response sensitivity of infrared scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy with the work-function specificity of mirror electron microscopy, characteristic mesoscopic patterns are identified, which are related to carrier concentration modulation originating from the formation of defects during the crystal growth process. This correlative imaging and modeling approach thus provides the desired guidance for optimization of growth parameters, crucial for preparing TI nanomaterials to display their intrinsic exotic Dirac properties.

Demographic and COPD-related characteristics were collected in baseline.Results: In baseline, after adjusting for age, dust exposure duration positively correlated with number of acute exacerbation (AE) frequency in the last year. There were close associations among COPD Assessment Tool (CAT) score, modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRC) grade, number of AE, and pre-FEV1 value. Of 296 participants originally recruited, 213 participants finished the 2-year follow-up for adherence. 122 (57.28%) were non-adherent to inhaled therapy. The most common reason for non-adherence was “relief of symptoms after short-term controller medication use” (53.28%). Patients who were non-adherent reported higher body mass index (BMI), less AE events in the last year, higher pre-FEV1 value, higher post-FEV1 value and low CAT, mMRC scores compared to adherent in baseline. High pre-FEV1 value (OR = 1.04, CI = 1.018– 1.064) and low mMRC scores (OR = 0.406, CI = 0.214– 0.771) were risk factors found associated with non-adherence.Conclusion: A majority of pneumoconiosis patients complicated with COPD have suboptimal inhaled therapy adherence. Evidence-based, adherence-enhancing interventions should be targeted on less severe subjects.Keywords: adherence, inhaled therapy, pneumoconiosis, COPD
