Search

We derive the initial spin period distribution of neutron stars by studying the population of young pulsars associated with supernova remnants. Our hierarchical Bayesian approach accounts for the measurement uncertainties of individual observations and selection effects. Without correcting for selection effects, as done in previous studies, we find that pulsar initial spin periods follow a Weibull distribution, peaking at 40~ms, which is favoured against the log-normal distribution with a Bayes factor of 200. The known selection effects in radio pulsar surveys, including pulse broadening and a period-dependent beaming fraction, have been quantitatively investigated. We show that, based on measurements of pulsar luminosity and spin period from the ATNF Pulsar Catalogue, the impact of pulse broadening on the inference of pulsar period distribution is likely to be insignificant. Correcting for the beaming selection effect, a Weibull distribution remains to be the preferred model, while its peak slightly shifts to longer periods at 50~ms. Spin period distribution provides important clues to understand the formation of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). To uncover the intrinsic period distribution, we analyze three samples of radio MSPs in the Galactic field and in globular clusters. The selection bias due to pulse broadening has been corrected but turns out to be negligible. We find that all the samples can be well described by a Weibull distribution of spin frequencies. Considering MSPs in the Galactic field or in globular clusters, and in isolation or in binary systems, we find no significant difference in the spin distribution among these subpopulations. Based on the current known population of MSPs, we find that sub-millisecond pulsars are unlikely to be discovered by the Square Kilometer Array, although up to $\sim10$ discoveries of pulsars that spin faster than the current record holder of $P=1.4$~ms are expected., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. With the continuous advancement of nanotechnology, nanodevices have become crucial components in computing, sensing and energy conversion applications. However, the structures of nanodevices typically possess sub-wavelength dimensions and separations, which pose significant challenges for understanding energy transport phenomena in nanodevices. Here, based on a judiciously designed thermal nanodevice, we report the first measurement of near-field energy transport between two coplanar sub-wavelength structures over temperature bias up to ~190 K. Our experimental results demonstrate a remarkable 20-fold enhancement in heat transfer beyond blackbody radiation. In contrast with the well-established near-field interactions between two semi-infinite bodies, the sub-wavelength confinements in nanodevices lead to the increased polariton scattering and the reduction of supporting modes and therefore a lower heat flow at a given separation. Our work unveils exciting opportunities for the rational design of nanodevices, particularly for on-chip near-field energy transport, with important implications for the development of efficient nanodevices for energy harvesting and thermal management., Comment: 35 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables

Combining the `time-delay distance' ($D_{\Delta t}$) measurements from galaxy lenses and other distance indicators provides model-independent determinations of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) and spatial curvature ($\Omega_{K,0}$), only based on the validity of the Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric and geometrical optics. To take the full merit of combining $D_{\Delta t}$ measurements in constraining $H_0$, we use gamma-ray burst (GRB) distances to extend the redshift coverage of lensing systems much higher than that of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and even higher than quasars, whilst the general cosmography with a curvature component is implemented for the GRB distance parametrizations. Combining Lensing+GRB yields $H_0=71.5^{+4.4}_{-3.0}$~km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$ and $\Omega_{K,0} = -0.07^{+0.13}_{-0.06}$ (1$\sigma$). A flat-universe prior gives slightly an improved $H_0 = 70.9^{+4.2}_{-2.9}$~km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. When combining Lensing+GRB+SN Ia, the error bar $\Delta H_0$ falls by 25\%, whereas $\Omega_{K,0}$ is not improved due to the degeneracy between SN Ia absolute magnitude, $M_B$, and $H_0$ along with the mismatch between the SN Ia and GRB Hubble diagrams at $z\gtrsim 1.4$. Future increment of GRB observations can help to moderately eliminate the $M_B-H_0$ degeneracy in SN Ia distances and ameliorate the restrictions on cosmographic parameters along with $\Omega_{K,0}$ when combining Lensing+SN Ia+GRB. We conclude that there is no evidence of significant deviation from a (an) flat (accelerating) universe and $H_0$ is currently determined at 3\% precision. The measurements show great potential to arbitrate the $H_0$ tension between the local distance ladder and cosmic microwave background measurements and provide a relevant consistency test of the FLRW metric., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Knowledge about the Lorentz factor and its evolution of relativistic jets in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is crucial to understand their physics. An exact value of bulk Lorentz factor can be estimated based on a high-energy spectral cutoff, which may appear in GRBs' prompt emission owing to the absorption of photon-photon pair production. In this work, we focus on the investigation of the bulk Lorentz factor evolution of jets in an individual burst. Based on \textsl{Fermi} observations, we search for the bursts with multiple $\gamma$-ray pulses characterized by a high-energy spectral cutoff, and nine GRBs are obtained. Together with the estimation of the pulse duration and radiation spectrum, the Lorentz factor of jets corresponding to different pulses in an individual GRB are estimated. It is shown that the Lorentz factor of jets in an individual GRB fluctuates within a certain range and without a general trend in these nine GRBs. In addition, the Lorentz factors of the jets in GRBs~130821A, 160509A and 160625B seem to increase with time. We also study the relations among $L_{\rm iso }$, $E_{\rm p,z}$, and $\Gamma$ for the pulses in our sample, which is found to be consistent with that found in previous works., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Metasurfaces consisting of an array of planar sub-wavelength structures have shown great potentials in controlling thermal infrared radiation, including intensity, coherence, and polarization. These capabilities together with the two-dimensional nature make thermal metasurfaces an ultracompact multifunctional platform for infrared light manipulation. Integrating the functionalities, such as amplitude, phase (spectrum and directionality), and polarization, on a single metasurface offers fascinating device responses. However, it remains a significant challenge to concurrently optimize the optical, electrical, and thermal responses of a thermal metasurface in a small footprint. In this work, we develop a center-contacted electrode line design for a thermal infrared metasurface based on a gold nanorod array, which allows local Joule heating to electrically excite the emission without undermining the localized surface plasmonic resonance. The narrowband emission of thermal metasurfaces and their robustness against temperature nonuniformity demonstrated in this work have important implications for the applications in infrared imaging, sensing, and energy harvesting., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binary coalescences provide an independent probe of the cosmic expansion history other than electromagnetic waves. In this work, we assume the binary black holes (BBHs) detected by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaborations are of primordial origin and constrain the population parameters of primordial black holes (PBHs) and Hubble parameter $H(z)$ using $42$ BBHs from third LVK GW transient catalog (GWTC-3). Three PBH mass models are considered: lognormal, power-law, and critical collapse PBH mass functions. By performing a hierarchical Bayesian population analysis, the Bayes factor strongly disfavors the power-law PBH mass function against the other two in GWTC-3. The constraints on standard $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ cosmological parameters are rather weak and in agreement with current results. When combining the multi-messenger standard siren measurement from GW170817, the Hubble constant $H_0$ is constrained to be $69^{+19}_{-8}\, \mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ and $70^{+26}_{-8}\, \mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ at $68\%$ confidence for the lognormal and critical collapse mass models, respectively. Furthermore, we consider a mixed ABH+PBH model, in which we assume LVK BBHs can come from both the astrophysical black hole (ABH) and PBH channels. We find that the ABH+PBH model can better describe the mass distribution in GWTC-3 than any single ABH or PBH model, thus improving the precision to constrain the Hubble constant. The spectral lags of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been viewed as the most promising probes of the possible violations of Lorentz invariance (LIV). However, these constraints usually depend on the assumption of the unknown intrinsic time lag in different energy bands and the use of a single highest-energy photon. A new approach to test the LIV effects has been proposed by directly fitting the spectral lag behavior of a GRB with a well-defined transition from positive lags to negative lags. This method simultaneously provides a reasonable formulation of the intrinsic time lag and robust lower limits on the quantum-gravity energy scales ($E_{\rm QG}$). In this work, we perform a global fitting to the spectral lag data of GRB~190114C by considering the possible LIV effects based on a Bayesian approach. We then derive limits on $E_{\rm QG}$ and the coefficients of the Standard Model Extension. The Bayes factors output in our analysis shows a very strong evidence for the spectral-lag transition in GRB~190114C. Our constraints on a variety of isotropic and anisotropic coefficients for LIV are somewhat weaker than existing bounds, but they can be viewed as comparatively robust and have the promise to complement existing LIV constraints. It is generally believed that the variability of photospheric emission in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) traces that of the jet power. This work further investigates the variability of photospheric emission in a variable jet. By setting a constant $\eta$ (dimensionless entropy of the jet), we find that the light curve of the photospheric emission shows a ``tracking'' pattern on the time profile of jet power. However, the relative variability is significantly low in the photospheric emission compared with that in the jet power. If the $\eta$ is genetic variable, the variability of the photospheric emission is not only limited by the jet power but also affected by $\eta$ strongly. It becomes complex and is generally different from that of the jet power. Moreover, the opposite phase may stand in the variabilities of the photospheric emission at different photon energies. We also find that the relative variability does not remain constant over the photon energies with an obvious reduction at a certain energy. This is consistent with the analysis of GRB 090902B in which an appreciable thermal component has been detected in a wide energy range. For several other GRBs coupling with the thermal component, we conservatively evaluate the variability of the thermal and non-thermal emission, respectively. Our results show that the relative variability of the thermal emission is likely comparable to that of the non-thermal emission for these bursts. The Lorentz factor of a relativistic jet and its evolution during the jet expansion are difficult to estimate, especially for the jets in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, it is related to the understanding of jet physics. Owing to the absorption of two-photon pair production ($\gamma\gamma{\leftrightarrow}e^+e^-$), a high-energy spectral cutoff may appear in the radiation spectrum of GRBs. We search such kind of high-energy cutoff in GRB 160625B, which is one of the brightest bursts in recent years. It is found that the high-energy spectral cutoff is obvious for the first pulse in the second emission episode of GRB 160625B (i.e., $\sim$186-192 s after the burst first trigger), which is smooth and well-shaped. Then, we estimate the Lorentz factor and radiation location of the jet shell associated with the first pulse in the second emission episode of GRB 160625B. It is found that the radiation location increases with time. In addition, the Lorentz factor remains almost constant during the expansion of the jet shell. This reveals that the magnetization of the jet is low or intermediate in the emission region, event though the jet could be still Poynting flux dominated at smaller radii to avoid a bright thermal component in the emission episode., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent research shows that the spectral lag is closely related to the spectral evolution in GRBs. In this paper, we study the spectral lag for a radiating jet shell with a high-energy cut-off radiation spectrum. For the jet shell with a cut-off power-law spectrum, the spectral lag monotonically increases with the photon energy and levels off at a certain photon energy. It is the same for the jet shell with a Band cut-off spectrum (Bandcut). However, a turn-over from the positive lags to negative lags appears in the high-energy range for the jet shell with Bandcut, which is very similar to that observed in GRB~160625B. The dependence of the spectral lags on the spectral shape/evolution are studied in details. Two-episode emission components separated by quiescent gaps in the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been observed in the {\em Swift} era, but there is a lack of spectral information due to the narrow energy band of the {\em Swift}/Burst Alert Telescope. In this paper, a systematic analysis of the spectral and temporal properties of the prompt emission of 101 {\em Fermi}/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor detected long GRBs show the existence of two-episode emission components in the light curves, with quiescent times of up to hundreds of seconds. We focus on investigating the differences of those two emission episodes. We find that the light curves of the two emission components exhibit different behavior, e.g., a soft emission component that either precedes or follows the main prompt emission or that the intensity of the two emission episodes are comparable with each other. No statistically significant correlation in the duration of the two emission episodes can be claimed. We define a new parameter $\varepsilon$ as the ratio of the peak flux of the first and second emission episodes and find that a higher $\varepsilon$ corresponds to a larger fluence. The preferred spectral model in our analysis is a cutoff power-law model for most GRBs. The distribution of $E_p$ for episodes I and II range from tens of keV to 1000 keV with a lognormal fit and there are no significant differences between them. Moreover, we do not find significant relationships between $\varepsilon$ and $E_p$ for the two emission episodes. The favored progenitor model for Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) with Supernova (SN) association is the core collapse of massive stars. One possible outcome of such a collapse is a rapidly spinning, strongly magnetized neutron star ("magnetar"). We systematically analyze the multi-wavelength data of GRB/SN associations detected by several instruments before 2017 June. Twenty GRB/SN systems have been confirmed via direct spectroscopic evidence or a clear light curve bump, as well as some spectroscopic evidence resembling a GRB-SN. We derive/collect the basic physical parameters of the GRBs and the SNe, and look for correlations among these parameters. We find that the peak brightness, $\rm ^{56}Ni$ mass, and explosion energy of SNe associated with GRBs are statistically higher than other Type Ib/c SNe. A statistically significant relation between the peak energy of GRBs and the peak brightness of their associated SNe is confirmed. No significant correlations are found between the GRB energies (either isotropic or beaming-corrected) and the supernova energy. We investigate the energy partition within these systems and find that the beaming-corrected GRB energy of most systems is smaller than the SN energy, with less than 30\% of the total energy distributed in the relativistic jet. The total energy of the systems is typically smaller than the maximum available energy of a millisecond magnetar ($2\times 10^{52}$ erg), especially if aspherical SN explosions are considered. We compile the radio-optical-X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 65 knots and 29 hotspots in 41 active galactic nucleus jets to examine their high energy radiation mechanisms. Their SEDs can be fitted with the single-zone leptonic models, except for the hotspot of Pictor A and six knots of 3C 273. The X-ray emission of one hotspot and 22 knots is well explained as synchrotron radiations under the equipartition condition; they usually have lower X-ray and radio luminosities than the others, which may be due to a lower beaming factor. An inverse Compton (IC) process is involved for explaining the X-ray emission of the other SEDs. Without considering the equipartition condition, their X-ray emission can be attributed to the synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) process, but the derived jet power (P_jet) are not correlated with L_k and most of them are larger than L_k with more than three orders of magnitude, where L_k is the jet kinetic power estimated with their radio emission. Under the equipartition condition, the X-ray emission is well interpreted with the IC process to the cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB). In this scenario, the derived P_jet of knots and hotspots are correlated with and comparable to L_k. These results suggest that the IC/CMB model may be the promising interpretation of their X-ray emission. In addition, a tentative knot-hotspot sequence in the synchrotron peak-energy--peak-luminosity plane is observed, similar to the blazar sequence, which may be attributed to their different cooling mechanisms of electrons., Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Motivating by the discovery of association between GW 170817 and sGRB 170817A, we present a comprehensive analysis for sGRBs observed with Fermi/GBM in 9 operation years and study the properties of sGRB 170817A -like events. We derive a catalog of 275 typical sGRBs and 48 sGRB 170817A-like weak events from the GBM data of 2217 GRBs. We visibly identify two patterns of their light curve, single episode (Pattern I, 61\% of the SGRBs) and multiple episodes (Pattern II, 39\% of the SGRBs). Their duration distribution shows a tentative bimodal feature. Their spectra can be fitted with a cutoff power-law model, except for 4 sGRBs, and the spectral indices normally distribute at $\Gamma=0.69\pm 0.40$. Their $E_p$ values show a tentative bimodal distribution with peaks at 145 keV and 500 keV. No correlation among $T_{90}$, $E_p$, and $\Gamma$ is found. GRB 170817A is a soft, weak sGRB with $ E_{p}=124\pm 106$ keV, $L_{\rm iso}=(5.67\pm4.65)\times10^{46}\rm ~erg~s^{-1}$, and $E_{\rm iso}=(3.23\pm2.65)\times10^{46}\rm ~erg$. It follows the $E_{\rm iso}-E_{\rm p}$ relation of typical short GRBs. Its lightcurve is of Pattern II. Two lightcurve patterns, together with the potential two components in the $E_{\rm p}$ and $T_{90}$ distributions, we suspect that the current sample may include two distinct types of sGRBs from different progenitors. sGRB 170817A-like events may be from NS-NS mergers and those sGRBs with a Pattern I lightcurve may be from another distinct type of compact binary., Comment: 37 pages, 3 tables, 12 figures
