Abstract Climate change is currently one of humanity’s greatest threats. To help scholars understand the psychology of climate change, we conducted an online quasi-experimental survey on 59,508 participants from 63 countries (collected between July 2022 and July 2023). In a between-subjects design, we tested 11 interventions designed to promote climate change mitigation across four outcomes: climate change belief, support for climate policies, willingness to share information on social media, and performance on an effortful pro-environmental behavioural task. Participants also reported their demographic information (e.g., age, gender) and several other independent variables (e.g., political orientation, perceptions about the scientific consensus). In the no-intervention control group, we also measured important additional variables, such as environmentalist identity and trust in climate science. We report the collaboration procedure, study design, raw and cleaned data, all survey materials, relevant analysis scripts, and data visualisations. This dataset can be used to further the understanding of psychological, demographic, and national-level factors related to individual-level climate action and how these differ across countries.

Research objectives: to study the pathogenetic links in the development of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) by determining the state of connective tissue (CT), concentrations of trace elements, vitamins and estradiol in premenopausal women. Materials and methods. 189 women aged 45–55 years with SUI were examined. In addition to general clinical examination, concentrations of Total PІNP (type I collagen synthesis marker) and Total PІІІNP (type III collagen synthesis marker) and CT resorption marker Pyriliks-D, ionized magnesium, ionized calcium, total calcium, vitamins D and C, estradiol were studied in the blood serum in order to determine the state of fibrous CT. Results. In the structure of somatic morbidity were conditions defined as phenotypic manifestations of CT undifferentiated dysplasia. A decrease of the Total PІNP by 24.9% was found against the background of an increased Total PІІІNP by 46.7% and an increased Pyriliks-D by 54.1%. Women with SUI were characterized by a significant decrease in the average value of Mg2+ by an average of 16.7%, as well as a significant increase in the average value of Ca2+ by 5.3% and total Ca by 3.9%. The vitamin balance study shows a significant decrease of vitamin D by 40.6% and vitamin C by 37.0%. Estradiol concentration was at the minimum values of the physiological norm. Conclusions. Women in premenopausal age with SUI are characterized by a violation of the CT synthesis and resorption, which are realized by reducing the formation of the Total PІNP against the background of intensification of the Total PІІІNP and Pyriliks-D synthesis, combined with a disbalance of vitamins and trace elements. These features are highly likely to be considered as predictors of the SUI development in women of premenopausal age

Research objective: to determine the role and effectiveness of the proposed therapeutic and prophylactic complex in the correction of vaginal biocenosis disorders in the dynamics of pregnancy in pregnant women after assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to improve the tactics of antenatal observation and prevention of obstetric and perinatal complications. Materials and methods. 299 pregnant women were examined: the main group included 249 women with pregnancy after ART, the control group consisted of 50 pregnant women with spontaneous pregnancy. Therapeutic and prophylactic measures for pregnant women after ART included: micronized progesterone, magnesium oxide, folic acid, L-arginine aspartate, ω-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids, long-term psychological correction (on the eve of the ART program, at 8–10 weeks, 16–18 weeks and 28–30 weeks of pregnancy). The drug for antibiotic therapy for local sanitation of the genital tract was chosen taking into account the sensitivity to antibiotics of certain microbial associates and was prescribed for 7–10 days. At the second stage of sanitation of the genital tract probiotics were prescribed under the control of pH-metry to maintain the acidic environment of the vaginal contents, colonize the vagina and the vaginal part of the cervix with lactobacilli. Results. There was a significant decrease in the proportion of women with a large number of epithelial cells in the main groups, which are a sign of alterative inflammation, and this is coincides with a similar indicator in the control group. Women with moderate leukocyte count and mixed Gram-negative microflora prevailed in IB, IIB and IIIB subgroup, who received conventional therapy. There was no significant difference in IIIA and IIIB subgroups. In the vaginal biocenosis significantly increased the Lactobacillus spp. content against the background of probiotics with local and general action in ІА, ІІА and ІІІА subgroups. The average Lactobacillus spp. concentration was significantly different from the average indicators of subgroups receiving conventional therapy for vaginal sanitation, with a significant decrease in the biocenosis of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and Candida albicans, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed two-stage treatment. Conclusions. The proposed improved two-stage sanitation of the genital tract with a selective probiotic against the background of long-term progesterone and magnesium support ensures the stabilization of the vaginal pH at the physiological level corresponding to the normocenosis, and contributes to a significant increase in Lactobacillus spp. within the physiological norm with a significant decrease of Candida albicans concentration in the biotope, as well as opportunistic pathogens of aerobic and anaerobic origin. This is provides conditions for the prolongation of pregnancy in women after ART treatment cycles.

Building on the epidemiological SIR model, we present an economic model with heterogeneous individuals deriving utility from social contacts creating infection risks. Focusing on social distancing of individuals susceptible to an infection we theoretically characterize the gap between private and social cost of contacts. Our main contribution is to quantify this gap by calibrating the model with unique survey data from Germany on social distancing and impure altruism from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The optimal policy is to drastically reduce contacts at the beginning to almost eradicate the epidemic and keep them at levels that contain the pandemic at a low prevalence level. We find that also in laissez faire, private protection efforts by forward-looking, risk averse individuals would have stabilized the epidemic, but at a much higher prevalence of infection than optimal. Altruistic motives increase individual protection efforts, but a substantial gap to the social optimum remains.

A statistical evaluation of nearly 10 years of high-resolution surface seawater carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2) time-series data collected from coastal moorings around O’ahu, Hawai’i suggest that these coral reef ecosystems were largely a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere between 2008 and 2016. The largest air-sea flux (1.24 ± 0.33 mol m−2 yr−1) and the largest variability in seawater pCO2 (950 μatm overall range or 8x the open ocean range) were observed at the CRIMP-2 site, near a shallow barrier coral reef system in Kaneohe Bay O’ahu. Two south shore sites, Kilo Nalu and Ala Wai, also exhibited about twice the surface water pCO2 variability of the open ocean, but had net fluxes that were much closer to the open ocean than the strongly calcifying system at CRIMP-2. All mooring sites showed the opposite seasonal cycle from the atmosphere, with the highest values in the summer and lower values in the winter. Average coastal diurnal variabilities ranged from a high of 192 μatm/day to a low of 32 μatm/day at the CRIMP-2 and Kilo Nalu sites, respectively, which is one to two orders of magnitude greater than observed at the open ocean site. Here we examine the modes and drivers of variability at the different coastal sites. Although daily to seasonal variations in pCO2 and air-sea CO2 fluxes are strongly affected by localized processes, basin-scale climate oscillations also affect the variability on interannual time scales.

Back pain is a major problem requiring pragmatic interventions, low in costs for health care providers and feasible for individuals to perform. Our objective was to test the effectiveness of a low-dose 5-month exercise intervention with small personnel investment on low back strength and self-perceived pain.Two hundred twenty-six employees (age: 42.7±10.2 years) from three mid-size companies were randomized to 5-month non-supervised training at home (3 times/week for 20 minutes) or wait-list-control. Health insurance professionals instructed the participants on trunk exercises at the start and then supervised participants once a month.Muscle strength for back extension increased after the 5-month intervention with a significant between-group difference (mean 27.4 Newton [95%CI 2.2; 60.3]) favoring the exercise group (p = 0.035). Low back pain was reduced more in subjects after exercise than control (mean difference -0.74 cm [95%CI -1.17; -0.27], p = 0.002). No between-group differences were observed for back pain related disability and work ability. After stratified analysis only subjects with preexisting chronic low back pain showed a between-group difference (exercise versus controls) after the intervention in their strength for back extension (mean 55.7 Newton [95%CI 2.8; 108.5], p = 0.039), self-perceived pain (mean -1.42 cm [95%CI -2.32; -0.51], p = 0.003) and work ability (mean 2.1 points [95%CI 0.2; 4.0], p = 0.032). Significant between-group differences were not observed in subjects without low back pain: strength for back extension (mean 23.4 Newton [95%CI -11.2; 58.1], p = 0.184), self-perceived pain (mean -0.48 cm [95%CI -0.99; 0.04], p = 0.067) and work ability (mean -0.1 points [95%CI -0.9; 0.9], p = 0.999). An interaction between low back pain subgroups and the study intervention (exercise versus control) was exclusively observed for the work ability index (p = 0.016).In middle-aged employees a low-dose, non-supervised exercise program implemented over 20 weeks improved trunk muscle strength and low back pain, and in those with preexisting chronic low back pain improved work ability.

Continuous monitoring by the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS) provided a unique opportunity to study the effects of two tsunamis on the coastal and estuarine waters of Hawai'i. By the time the 2010 Chile and 2011 Japan tsunamis reached the waters of southern O'ahu, they had lost much of their power (both were < 1 m high in Honolulu Harbor). Nevertheless, their effects on the surrounding waters were profound, with increases observed in near-bed current velocities, mixing in estuarine waters, salinity, turbidity, chlorophyll, and pathogenic bacteria such as Vibrio spp. In addition to these increases, we observed small decreases in nitrate and dissolved oxygen concentrations offshore, including a dampening of the normal diel cycle in dissolved oxygen. Some of the effects penetrated canals as far as 1 km inshore and could be observed up to 0.5 km offshore. Data from the PacIOOS sensors and our sampling show that altered and potentially degraded water quality can persist longer than the physical threat from surge. Shortly after both tsunamis, the "all clear" signal was given and people resumed recreational activities in coastal waters before our data indicated recovery of healthy water quality conditions. Following such events, monitoring should be expanded and continued in order to accurately characterize water quality and evaluate potential public health risks.

Ocean acidification refers to the lowering of the ocean's pH due to the uptake of anthropogenic CO 2 from the atmosphere. Coral reef calcification is expected to decrease as the oceans become more acidic. Dissolving calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) sands could greatly exacerbate reef loss associated with reduced calcification but is presently poorly constrained. Here we show that CaCO 3 dissolution in reef sediments across five globally distributed sites is negatively correlated with the aragonite saturation state (Ω ar ) of overlying seawater and that CaCO 3 sediment dissolution is 10-fold more sensitive to ocean acidification than coral calcification. Consequently, reef sediments globally will transition from net precipitation to net dissolution when seawater Ω ar reaches 2.92 ± 0.16 (expected circa 2050 CE).
