The Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota in northeastern China has yielded a diversity of feathered dromaeosaurid dinosaurs and expanded our knowledge of avian origin and flight evolution. However, histology-based ontogenetic references and detailed morphological studies remain limited relative to the abundant fossils. Here, a new specimen of microraptorine from the Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation is described. This specimen includes a nearly complete postcranial skeleton and inferred as a Microraptor based on revised osteological characters. The femoral length of the new specimen is less than 5 cm, making it the smallest dromaeosaurid individual reported from the Jehol Biota until now. Osteohistological analysis reveals that this individual was a juvenile that is less than one-year old. The new specimen provides additional morphological details that are poorly preserved in the other Microraptor specimens, including aspects of the coracoid, ilium, and tail. Additionally, the sacrals and pubic symphysis of the new specimen have respectively fused at the juvenile stage. This phenomenon suggests caution should be taken in using skeletal fusion for assessing the ontogenetic stage of Microraptor specimens, highlighting the importance of histological analysis. Abstract Background Unenlagiine paravians are among the most relevant Gondwanan theropod dinosaur clades for understanding the origin of birds, yet their fossil record remains incomplete, with most taxa being represented by fragmentary material and/or separated by lengthy temporal gaps, frustrating attempts to characterize unenlagiine evolution. Results and conclusions Here we describe Diuqin lechiguanae gen. et sp. nov., a new unenlagiine taxon from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Bajo de la Carpa Formation of the Neuquén Basin of Neuquén Province in northern Patagonia, Argentina that fills a substantial stratigraphic gap in the fossil record of these theropods. Although known only from a very incomplete postcranial skeleton, the preserved bones of Diuqin differ from corresponding elements in other unenlagiines, justifying the erection of the new taxon. Moreover, in several morphological aspects, the humerus of Diuqin appears intermediate between those of geologically older unenlagiines from the Neuquén Basin (e.g., Unenlagia spp. from the Turonian–Coniacian Portezuelo Formation) and that of the stratigraphically younger, larger-bodied Austroraptor cabazai from the Campanian–Maastrichtian Allen Formation. Consequently, the morphology of the new taxon appears to indicate a transitional stage in unenlagiine evolution. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Diuqin as a paravian with multiple plausible systematic positions, but the strongest affinity is with Unenlagiinae. The humerus of the new form exhibits subcircular punctures near its distal end that are interpreted as feeding traces most likely left by a conical-toothed crocodyliform, mammal, or theropod, the latter potentially corresponding to a megaraptorid or another unenlagiine individual. Thus, in addition to filling important morphological and temporal gaps in unenlagiine evolutionary history, the new taxon also offers information relating to the paleoecology of these theropods.

Colour reconstructions have provided new insights into the lives of dinosaurs and other extinct animals, by predicting colouration patterns from fossilised pigment-bearing organelles called melanosomes. Although these methods have become increasingly popular, only a small number of dinosaurs have been studied using these techniques, which require exceptional preservation of fossil feathers, leaving open key questions such as whether dinosaurs changed their plumage patterns during ontogeny. Here we reconstruct the feather colouration of an approximately one-year-old individual of the Early Cretaceous dromaeosaurid theropod Wulong bohaiensis, which to our knowledge is the first unequivocal juvenile paravian for which aspects of the original colour has been predicted. Using quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) and multinomial logistic regression (MLR) on the most comprehensive available datasets, we find strong evidence for iridescent plumage of the forelimb and hindlimb remiges and grey plumage on other portions of the body. This suggests that some juvenile paravians used shiny iridescent feathers for signalling purposes, possibly even before reaching somatic or sexual maturity, and thus we can conclude that this paravian used iridescent signalling for intraspecific communication other than sexual signalling. Finally, our results show that when analysing fossil datasets that are entirely comprised of solid and cylindrical melanosomes QDA consistently outperforms MLR, providing more accurate and higher classification probability colour predictions.

Numerous dromaeosaurid taxa recovered from the Upper Cretaceous strata of the Gobi Desert raise questions over niche partitioning among closely related species. Here, I describe a dromaeosaurid specimen from the Baruungoyot strata of the Khulsan locality, containing a partial skull in close association with the left hind limb. The material can be referred to the velociraptorine Shri devi, until now known only from a single specimen lacking a skull, collected from the same site. The referral is based on the apomorphic morphology of the pes, including the highly hypertrophic ungual of the second digit and details of the metatarsus. The skull of S. devi confirms its close affinities with Velociraptor mongoliensis, but shows distinctive features among Velociraptorinae, including a short antorbital fenestra, a Z-shaped maxillo-jugular suture, a distinct labial ridge above the supralabial foramina row of the maxilla, and the posterior position of the last maxillary tooth. The skull of S. devi is slender, but relatively short when compared to other velociraptorines, suggesting convergence to the North American eudromaeosaurians. The Baruungoyot strata with S. devi represent less arid conditions than the aeolian Djadokhta strata yielding V. mongoliensis, supporting earlier observations linking the elongation of the dromaeosaurid snout with the environment.

Two isolated metatarsals (III and IV) of theropod dinosaurs from the Bostobe Formation (Upper Cretaceous, Santonian–Campanian) of the Shakh-Shakh locality in Kazakhstan are assigned to the representatives of the families Caenagnathidae and Dromaeosauridae, respectively. The metatarsal III of Caena-gnathidae indet. confirms the presence of oviraptorosaurs in the dinosaur assemblage from the Bostobe Formation. This bone is very similar morphologically with the metatarsal III of Elmisaurus rarus Osmólska, 1981 from the Maastrichtian of Mongolia. The metatarsal IV of Dromaeosauridae indet. is characterized by a lateral crest, which among dromaeosaurids is known only for Velociraptor mongoliensis Osborn, 1924 from the Campanian of Mongolia. The Upper Cretaceous (Turonian) Bissekty Formation of Uzbekistan has yielded many isolated bones and teeth representing a variety of non-avian theropod dinosaurs. A pedal phalanx II-2 indicates the presence of a dromaeosaurid theropod that attained a larger body size than any previously known member of that clade. The same formation also yielded a large maxillary fragment that has recently been described as a neovenatorid carcharodontosaurian (Ulughbegsaurus uzbekistanensis). However, this specimen lacks unambiguously diagnostic features of that clade, and its purported carcharodontosaurian characters are either taphonomic artefacts or also shared by dromaeosaurids. Thus, the phylogenetic relationships of Uleghbegsaurus uzbekistanensis remain uncertain. Dromaeosaurids are poorly known in Europe and their fossil records are mostly postcranial remains. To date, the French faunal records of the family Dromaeosauridae include two taxa: Pyroraptor olympius and Variraptor mechinorum. Nevertheless, their taxonomic validity and phylogenetic relationships as dromaeosaurids are controversial. Here, we report a new record of a dromaeosaurid-like pedal ungual from the 'Grès à Reptiles' Formation (Campanian-Maastrichtian) of the Upper Cretaceous of southern France. The French specimen was assigned to cf. Dromaeosauridae on the basis of an extensive qualitative analysis. The new specimen has a strongly curved morphology with a tall, narrow cross-section, which is one of the most characteristic anatomical features of the family. Direct comparison reveals that the claw is similar to that of Pyroraptor olympius (MNHN BO001) from a stratigraphically correlated locality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the terrestrial fossil record of the mid-Cretaceous interval (Aptian to Cenomanian) in North America has been poorly studied, the recent focus on fossil localities from the western United States has offered a more detailed picture of vertebrate diversity, ecosystem dynamics and faunal turnover that took place on the western landmass of Laramidia. This is in stark contrast to the terrestrial record from the eastern landmass of Appalachia, where vertebrate fossils are rare and consist mostly of isolated and fragmentary remains. However, a detailed understanding of these fossil communities during this interval is necessary for comparison of the faunal patterns that developed during the opening of the Western Interior Seaway (WIS). The Woodbine Group of Texas is a Cenomanian age (95-100 mya) deposit consisting of shallow marine, deltaic, and terrestrial communities, which were only recently separated from their western counterparts. These deposits have yielded a wealth of vertebrate remains, yet non-avian theropods are still largely unknown. Recently, multiple localities in the Lewisville Formation of the Woodbine Group have yielded new non-avian theropod material, including numerous isolated teeth and postcranial remains. While largely fragmentary, this material is sufficiently diagnostic to identify the following taxa: a large-bodied carcharodontosaur, a mid-sized tyrannosauroid, a large ornithomimosaur, a large dromaeosaurine, a small dromaeosaurid, a small troodontid, and a small coelurosaur. Some of these groups represent the first occurrence for Appalachia and provide a broader understanding of a newly expanded faunal diversity for the Eastern landmass. The Lewisville Formation theropod fauna is similar in taxonomic composition to contemporaneous deposits in Laramidia, confirming that these groups were widespread across the continent prior to extension of the WIS. The Lewisville Formation documents the transitional nature of Cenomanian coastal ecosystems in Texas while providing additional details on the evolution of Appalachian communities shortly after WIS extension. Small-bodied dromaeosaurid and troodontid theropod dinosaurs are present in most of the terrestrial Late Cretaceous formations of the North American Western Interior, but are represented predominantly by shed teeth and more rarely by isolated skeletal elements and associated skeletons. The eudromaeosaurian dromaeosaurid Saurornitholestes is among the most commonly recovered small theropods from North America, known from abundant shed teeth, isolated cranial and postcranial elements, and several partial or near-complete skeletons from the Campanian aged Two Medicine Formation of Montana and the Dinosaur Park Formation of Alberta. Conversely, few Saurornitholestes specimens beyond shed teeth have been recovered from temporally equivalent units of the Judith River Formation of Montana. This study reports the first cranial material, a near-complete frontal, referable to Saurornitholestes from the Judith River Formation of Montana. This specimen is the easternmost occurrence of this taxon and was recovered approximately 400 km east of the localities which have produced referred Saurornitholestes specimens in the Two Medicine Formation, proximal to the Cordilleran thrust front. As such, this new specimen indicates that Saurornitholestes was biogeographically widespread and occupied both inland and coastal environments across the northern portions of the Late Cretaceous Western Interior of North America. Dinosaurs are notable for their extensive skeletal pneumaticity, a feature that may have helped facilitate the development of various 'extreme' body plans in this group. Despite its relevance to understanding the evolution of the avian body plan, this feature has only been described in detail for a few non-avian dinosaurs, and cranial pneumaticity outside the braincase remains poorly documented. I describe facial pneumatic features in members of the Dromaeosauridae, a clade of hypercarnivorous dinosaurs closely allied to birds. Variation in the pneumaticity of the nasals and jugals, the position and shape of the pneumatic fenestrae of the maxilla and the border of the antorbital fossa shows that facial pneumaticity differed substantially among closely related dromaeosaurids and other bird-like dinosaurs. Ancestral state reconstructions of facial pneumaticity in coelurosaurs suggest a complex evolutionary history for these features. Surprisingly, the general trend along the path towards birds was the loss or reduction of superficial pneumatic features on the snout and cheek. Some facial pneumatic features seem to have evolved secondarily in some derived bird-like forms. The results show superficial facial pneumaticity did not increase in coelurosaurs and emphasize the complexity of the evolution of pneumatization in the lineage leading to birds. Neuroanatomical reconstructions of extinct animals have long been recognized as powerful proxies for palaeoecology, yet our understanding of the endocranial anatomy of dromaeosaur theropod dinosaurs is still incomplete. Here, we used X‐ray computed microtomography (µCT) to reconstruct and describe the endocranial anatomy, including the endosseous labyrinth of the inner ear, of the small‐bodied dromaeosaur, Velociraptor mongoliensis. The anatomy of the cranial endocast and ear were compared with non‐avian theropods, modern birds, and other extant archosaurs to establish trends in agility, balance, and hearing thresholds in order to reconstruct the trophic ecology of the taxon. Our results indicate that V. mongoliensis could detect a wide and high range of sound frequencies (2,368–3,965 Hz), was agile, and could likely track prey items with ease. When viewed in conjunction with fossils that suggest scavenging‐like behaviours in V. mongoliensis, a complex trophic ecology that mirrors modern predators becomes apparent. These data suggest that V. mongoliensis was an active predator that would likely scavenge depending on the age and health of the individual or during prolonged climatic events such as droughts. Tetrapod limbs morphology is a reliable proxy of locomotor capacities. Beyond this, other aspects of life habits, such as predation abilities, can also be relevant to determine main morphofunctional appendicular properties, which ultimately reflect a compromise between different factors of the biological role. Dromaeosauridae is a dinosaur clade belonging to Theropoda, a group of bipedal predators. Dromaeosaurids represent an interesting study case, in which the hindlimbs have been proposed to be involved in both locomotion and predation activity. A peculiar feature characterizing all dromaeosaurids is a modified second pedal digit, which is typically related to predation. This theropod group is closely related to birds and diversified during the Cretaceous Period, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere (Laurasia). However, a subclade of dromaeosaurids, the Unenlagiinae, was recently recognized for Gondwana. Nevertheless, there are morphological differences between derived Laurasian dromaeosaurids (eudromaeosaurs) and unenlagiines. Such differences are observed in the proportions between hindlimb bones and in the presence of a subarctometatarsalian condition in unenlagiines, which is mainly characterized by a proximally constricted metatarsal III. To evaluate the function of these divergent morphologies, we conducted morphometric analyses and comparisons of qualitative morphological aspects, encompassing unenlagiines, other dromaeosaurids, as well as taxa from other theropod groups, including extant birds. The former approach consisted of two phylogenetic principal component analyses, one based on the main measurements of the hindlimb, and the other focused on the lengths of the pedal phalanges. The first analysis drew the unenlagiines close to taxa with long tibiae, as well as long and slender metatarsi. Instead, eudromaeosaurs are closer to taxa with shorter tibiae, and shorter and wider metatarsi. The second analysis showed that eudromaeosaurs and unenlagiines have similar phalangeal proportions, including the elongation of distal phalanges. However, the shorter second phalanx of the pedal digit II of eudromaeosaurs could have increased the force generated by this digit, which was the main predatory tool of the autopodium. This, together with a shorter and wider metatarsus, and a marked hinge‐like morphology of the articular surfaces of metatarsals and phalanges, possibly allowed eudromaeosaurs to exert a great gripping strength and hunt large prey. Conversely, the longer and slender subarctometatarsus, and less well‐marked hinge joints of unenlagiines possibly gave them greater cursorial capacities. Additionally, the longer second phalanx of digit II allowed unenlagiines fast movements of this digit to hunt smaller and elusive prey. Thus, the distinctive morphological evolutionary pathways of these two dromaeosaurid clades seem to have been influenced by the particular locomotor and predatory specializations that characterized each of these lineages. Dromaeosaurids (Theropoda: Dromaeosauridae), a group of dynamic, swift predators, have a sparse fossil record, particularly at the time of their extinction near the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. Here we report on a new dromaeosaurid, Dineobellator notohesperus, gen. and sp. nov., consisting of a partial skeleton from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) of New Mexico, the first diagnostic dromaeosaurid to be recovered from the latest Cretaceous of the southern United States (southern Laramidia). The holotype includes elements of the skull, axial, and appendicular skeleton. The specimen reveals a host of morphologies that shed light on new behavioral attributes for these feathered dinosaurs. Unique features on its forelimbs suggest greater strength capabilities in flexion than the normal dromaeosaurid condition, in conjunction with a relatively tighter grip strength in the manual claws. Aspects of the caudal vertebrae suggest greater movement near the tail base, aiding in agility and predation. Phylogenetic analysis places Dineobellator within Velociraptorinae. Its phylogenetic position, along with that of other Maastrichtian taxa (Acheroraptor and Dakotaraptor), suggests dromaeosaurids were still diversifying at the end of the Cretaceous. Furthermore, its recovery as a second North American Maastrichtian velociraptorine suggests vicariance of North American velociraptorines after a dispersal event during the Campanian-Maastrichtian from Asia. Features of Dineobellator also imply that dromaeosaurids were active predators that occupied discrete ecological niches while living in the shadow of Tyrannosaurus rex, until the end of the dinosaurs' reign. The dromaeosaurid theropod Halszkaraptor escuilliei is characterized by several unusual features absent in other paravians, part of which has been interpreted as diagnostic of a novel lineage adapted to a semiaquatic ecology. Recently, these evolutionary and ecological interpretations have been challenged, and Halszkaraptor has been claimed to be a transitional form between non-dromaeosaurid maniraptoriforms and other dromaeosaurids: following that reevaluation, its peculiar body plan would represent the retention of several maniraptoran plesiomorphies, lost among other dromaeosaurids, and not an adaptation to a novel ecology. This alternative scenario is here carefully investigated and tested. It is shown that most statements supporting this scenario are based on misinterpretation of anatomical traits and bibliography. Once these statements have been corrected, character state transition optimization over a well-supported phylogenetic framework indicates that the large majority of the peculiar features of the Halszkaraptor lineage are derived novelties acquired by the latter after its divergence from the last ancestor shared with eudromaeosaurs, and thus are not maniraptoriform plesiomorphies. At least seven novelties of the Halszkaraptor lineage are convergently acquired with spinosaurids, and are integrated in semiaquatic adaptations: one of these is reported here for the first time. The amount of morphological divergence of Halszkaraptorinae from the ancestral dromaeosaurid condition is comparable to those of Microraptorinae and Velociraptorinae. Among extant taxa, the sawbills (Mergini, Anseriformes) show the closest ecomorphological similarity with the peculiar body plan inferred for Halszkaraptor. The halszkaraptorine bauplan is thus confirmed as a derived amphibious specialization, and does not represent a "transitional" stage along the evolution of dromaeosaurids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent years witnessed the discovery of a great diversity of early birds as well as closely related non-avian theropods, which modified previous conceptions about the origin of birds and their flight. We here present a review of the taxonomic composition and main anatomical characteristics of those theropod families closely related with early birds, with the aim of analyzing and discussing the main competing hypotheses pertaining to avian origins. We reject the postulated troodontid affinities of anchiornithines, and the dromaeosaurid affinities of microraptorians and unenlagiids, and instead place these groups as successive sister taxa to Avialae. Aiming to evaluate previous phylogenetic analyses, we recoded unenlagiids in the traditional TWiG data matrix, which resulted in a large polytomy at the base of Pennaraptora. This indicates that the TWiG phylogenetic scheme needs a deep revision. Regarding character evolution, we found that: (1) the presence of an ossified sternum goes hand in hand with that of ossified uncinate processes; (2) the presence of foldable forelimbs in basal archosaurs indicates widespread distribution of this trait among reptiles, contradicting previous proposals that forelimb folding driven by propatagial and associated tendons was exclusive to the avian lineage; (3) in basal paravians and avialans (e.g., Archaeopteryx, Anchiornis) the wings are relatively large and wide, with relatively short rectricial feathers, a rounded alar contour, and a convex leading margin. These taxa exhibit restricted forelimb folding capability with respect to more derived birds, their hands being preserved at angles of flexion (with respect to the radius/ulna) of no less than 90°. In more derived birds, however, the rectrices are notably elongate and the angle between the hand and forearm is much less than 90°, indicating not only increased forelimb folding capability but also an increased variety of wingbeat movements during flight. Because of the strong similarities in pectoral girdle configuration between ratites and basal avialans and paravians, it is possible to infer that the main forelimb movements were similar in all these taxa, lacking the complex dorsoventral wing excursion characteristic of living neognathans.

Hulsanpes perlei is an enigmatic theropod dinosaur from the Baruungoyot Formation (?mid- to upper Campanian, Upper Cretaceous) of Mongolia. It was discovered in 1970, during the third Polish-Mongolian paleontological expedition to the Nemegt Basin. The taxon is known based on a partial braincase and an incomplete right hindlimb. However, the braincase fragment has never been described nor illustrated. We redescribe all elements that form the holotype of Hulsanpes and discuss the affinities of this taxon. The braincase fragment is interpreted as belonging to the inner ear region, and includes the floccular recess and part of the labyrinth. Hulsanpes perlei is confirmed as a valid taxon, diagnosed by a unique combination of metatarsal characters, including two autapomorphies. Historically, it represents the oldest record of the recentlyes tablished clade Halszkaraptorinae. Our findings identify subcursorial adaptations for Hulsanpes, shared with Mahakala, and differentiating them from Halszkaraptor. As such, appendicular disparity in the potentially sympatric halszkaraptorines suggest a reduced ecological overlap among these taxa, which may explain the co-occurrence of multiple species of this clade during the latest Cretaceous in what is now the Nemegt Basin. Abstract During the Cretaceous period, North America was divided into two landmasses, the eastern Appalachia and western Laramidia. Recent research on several sites scattered across the eastern margin of North America has allowed for the analysis of vertebrate faunas from the once obscure terrestrial fossil record of Appalachia, revealing the landmass harbored a distinctive fauna composed of mostly relict forms. One geological unit that has produced a comparatively extensive record of terrestrial vertebrates, including non-avian dinosaurs, is the middle Campanian Tar Heel Formation of North Carolina. Here, the first definitive occurrence of a dromaeosaurid from the Tar Heel Formation is reported on the basis of a tooth from a fairly large member of that group. This tooth clusters with those of dromaeosaurine dromaeosaurids from the western United States and Canada in morphometric analysis, differing in morphology and size from other dromaeosaurid teeth from southeastern North America that have been assigned to saurornitholestines or considered indeterminate. The tooth described herein is intermediate in size between those of smaller dromaeosaurids like Saurornitholestes and gigantic forms like Dakotaraptor , filling the gap between larger- and smaller-bodied dromaeosaurids from the Late Cretaceous. Isolated sacrum fragments, manual ungual phalanges, and a third metatarsal from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Yalovach Formation at the Kansai locality in Tajikistan, show similarities to those elements in various dromaeosaurid theropods and are referred to Kansaignathus sogdianus , previously described on the basis of a dentary from the same locality. The phylogenetic analysis incorporating the new characters from these elements confirms phylogenetic position of Kansaignathus as the basalmost Asiatic velociraptorine. Hulsanpes perlei is an enigmatic theropod dinosaur from the Baruungoyot Formation (?mid- to upper Campanian, Upper Cretaceous) of Mongolia. It was discovered in 1970, during the third Polish-Mongolian paleontological expedition to the Nemegt Basin. The taxon is known based on a partial braincase and an incomplete right hindlimb. However, the braincase fragment has never been described nor illustrated. We redescribe all elements that form the holotype of Hulsanpes and discuss the affinities of this taxon. The braincase fragment is interpreted as belonging to the inner ear region, and includes the floccular recess and part of the labyrinth. Hulsanpes perlei is confirmed as a valid taxon, diagnosed by a unique combination of metatarsal characters, including two autapomorphies. Historically, it represents the oldest record of the recently-established clade Halszkaraptorinae. Our findings identify subcursorial adaptations for Hulsanpes, shared with Mahakala, and differentiating them from Halszkaraptor. As such, appendicular disparity in the potentially sympatric halszkaraptorines suggest a reduced ecological overlap among these taxa, which may explain the co-occurrence of multiple species of this clade during the latest Cretaceous in what is now the Nemegt Basin.

Here we provide a detailed description of the postcranial skeleton of the holotype and referred specimens of Buitreraptor gonzalezorum. This taxon was recovered as an unenlagiine dromaeosaurid in several recent phylogenetic studies and is the best represented Gondwanan dromaeosaurid discovered to date. It was preliminarily described in a brief article, but a detailed account of its osteology is emerging in recent works. The holotype is the most complete specimen yet found, so an exhaustive description of it provides much valuable anatomical information. The holotype and referred specimens preserve the axial skeleton, pectoral and pelvic girdles, and both fore- and hindlimbs. Diagnostic postcranial characters of this taxon include: anterior cervical centra exceeding the posterior limit of neural arch; eighth and ninth cervical vertebral centra with lateroventral tubercles; pneumatic foramina only in anteriormost dorsals; middle and posterior caudal centra with a complex of shallow ridges on lateral surfaces; pneumatic furcula with two pneumatic foramina on the ventral surface; scapular blade transversely expanded at mid-length; well-projected flexor process on distal end of the humerus; dorsal rim of the ilium laterally everted; and concave dorsal rim of the postacetabular iliac blade. A paleohistological study of limb bones shows that the holotype represents an earlier ontogenetic stage than one of the referred specimens (MPCA 238), which correlates with the fusion of the last sacral vertebra to the rest of the sacrum in MPCA 238. A revised phylogenetic analysis recovered Buitreraptor as an unenlagiine dromaeosaurid, in agreement with previous works. The phylogenetic implications of the unenlagiine synapomorphies and other characters, such as the specialized pedal digit II and the distal ginglymus on metatarsal II, are discussed within the evolutionary framework of Paraves.

Dromaeosaurids (Theropoda: Dromaeosauridae), a group of dynamic, swift predators, have a sparse fossil record, particularly at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The recently described Dineobellator notohesperus, consisting of a partial skeleton from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) of New Mexico, is the only diagnostic dromaeosaurid to be recovered from the latest Cretaceous of the southwestern United States. Reinterpreted and newly described material include several caudal vertebrae, portions of the right radius and pubis, and an additional ungual, tentatively inferred to be from manual digit III. Unique features, particularly those of the humerus, unguals, and caudal vertebrae, distinguish D. notohesperus from other known dromaeosaurids. This material indicates different physical attributes among dromaeosaurids, such as use of the forearms, strength in the hands and feet, and mobility of the tail. Several bones in the holotype exhibit abnormal growth and are inferred to be pathologic features resulting from an injury or disease. Similar lengths of the humerus imply Dineobellator and Deinonychus were of similar size, at least regarding length and/or height, although the more gracile nature of the humerus implies Dineobellator was a more lightly built predator. A new phylogenetic analysis recovers D. notohesperus as a dromaeosaurid outside other previously known and named clades. Theropod composition of the Naashoibito Member theropod fauna is like those found in the more northern Late Cretaceous North American ecosystems. The upper Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) palaeontological site of Vadillos-1 is located in the North of the Cuenca Province, Spain. It includes a sedimentary succession in "Weald" facies of brown and grey mudstones and red clays, corresponding to an alluvial-palustrine muddy floodplain. Among the collected fossils, there are several vertebrate remains belonging to theropod dinosaurs, including some teeth (VD1-197, VD1-178, VD1-179, and VD1-180) that are described and identified for the first time. The taxonomic assignment was approached following two methods beside the classical consideration of their overall morphology: a cladistic analysis performed on a tooth-based data matrix, and a discriminant analysis performed on a large dataset including measurements of non-avian theropod teeth. The DSDI > 1.2 and the braided enamel present seen in VD1-197 suggest that the specimen belongs to a Dromaeosauridae or a non-tyrannosaurid Tyrannosauroidea, but the cladistics analysis classifies this tooth in the latest. The analysis showed that VD1-178, VD1-179 and VD1-180 can be ascribed to Dromaeosauridae. The dental features characteristic of this clade and present in our specimens include a DSDI > 1.2, labial and lingual depressions, and a braided enamel surface texture, which allows to place these teeth more specifically within the Eudromaeosauria. The results show, for the first time, the presence of dromaeosaurids and possibly non-Tyrannosaurid Tyrannosauroidea at Vadillos-1, thus providing new data to the European Barremian record, and contributing to the updating the geographic distribution of these dinosaurs. • New theropod teeth from the upper Barremian of Vadillos-1 (Cuenca, Spain). • Teeth referred to dromaeosaurids and non tyrannosaurid tyrannosauroids based on cladistics and discriminant analyses. • The possible presence of tyrannosauroids opens new possibilities regarding the distribution of these theropod groups. An ungual phalanx of a dromaeosaurid dinosaur from near Blagoveshchensk was studied for the first time. The occurrence of dromaeosaurids apart from other taxa of dinosaurs is evidence of the high biodiversity of the Amur region before the Cretaceous–Paleogene event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dakotaraptor steini is a recently described dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Hell Creek Formation of South Dakota. Included within the D. steini hypodigm are three elements originally identified as furculae, one of which was made part of the holotype specimen. We show that the elements described as D. steini ‘furculae’ are not theropod dinosaur furculae, but are rather trionychid turtle entoplastra referable to cf. Axestemys splendida. The hypodigm of D. steini should be adjusted accordingly.
