Waste glass from fibreglass production is waste that is generated at various stages of production. In nature, it is a combination of glass fibres, fine dust, but also larger glass grains, for example also from leakages during production. This material is or may be contaminated by impregnation, lubricants or some impurities that prevent its recovery during production. The main objective of this study is to assess the suitability of glass fibre waste and to optimise the pre-treatment of the raw material for use in the composite. This paper describes the determination of chemical composition, mineralogical composition by X-ray diffraction analysis, determination of bulk density, water absorption and specific surface area. The results obtained are compared with the primary raw material - glass fibre. The results showed that the waste from glass fibre production is primarily composed of silica, calcium, alumina and boron. Minor components include magnesium oxide, sodium oxide, fluorine, iron oxide, strontium oxide, potassium oxide, titanium dioxide, sulphur dioxide and chromium oxide. The specific surface area of treated glass fibre waste correlates with the specific surface area of cement, which is a prerequisite for the use of this waste as a partial substitute for cement in the production of building materials.

In this study, the suitability of waste from glass fibre production as a secondary filler for a polymeric durable hydrophobic coating, based on an innovative polyurethane organic–mineral base, was experimentally verified. The main aim of this work was to develop a basic formulation for a polymeric hydrophobic coating designed primarily for usage in aggressive environments. For this purpose, a total of four formulations were tested with different weight percentages of waste glass fibre, i.e., from 30 to 60%. The basic properties in the fresh state, such as the coating workability and kinematic and dynamic viscosity, were verified, and an application test was performed. The formulations were also verified after the polymerisation of the coating. Adhesion on a concrete substrate and the tensile properties and hardness of the coating were tested. Chemical resistance to liquid aggressive media and the microstructure of the coating after exposure to SO2 were also tested, as these are critical properties. All the formulations showed better workability than the reference coating without a filler, and the formulation with the highest filling (60%) appeared to be optimal. The maximum adhesion on the concrete substrate (11.9 MPa) and tensile strength (21.6 MPa) were recorded for the formulation with 60% waste fibreglass. It can be concluded that with an increase in the waste glass content, there was a significant improvement in the properties of the coatings. Additionally, the waste fibreglass did not have a significant negative impact on chemical resistance., V této studii byla experimentálně ověřena vhodnost odpadu z výroby skleněných vláken jako sekundárního plniva pro polymerní odolný hydrofobní nátěr na inovativní polyuretanové organicko-minerální bázi. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo vyvinout základní recepturu pro polymerní hydrofobní nátěr určený především pro použití v agresivním prostředí. Za tímto účelem byly testovány celkem čtyři receptury s různým hmotnostním procentem odpadního skleněného vlákna, tj. od 30 do 60 %. Byly ověřeny základní vlastnosti v čerstvém stavu jako zpracovatelnost, kinematická a dynamická viskozita nátěru, a byl proveden aplikační test. Receptury byly proověřovány také po polymeraci nátěru. Jednalo se o stanovení přilnavosti na beton a byly testovány tahové vlastnosti a tvrdost nátěru. Byla také testována chemická odolnost vůči kapalným agresivním médiím a mikrostruktura nátěru po expozici SO2, jelikož se jedná o zásadní vlastnosti vyvinutých nátěrů. Nátery s odpadním skelným vláknem vykazovaly lepší zpracovatelnost než referenční nátěr bez plniva a jako optimální se jevil nátěr s nejvyšším plněním (60 %). Maximální přilnavost k betonovému podkladu (11,9 MPa) a pevnost v tahu (21,6 MPa) byly zaznamenány také u receptury s 60 % odpadního skelného vlákna. Lze usuzovat, že se zvýšením obsahu odpadního skla došlo k výraznému zlepšení vlastností nátěru. Odpadní skelná vlákna navíc neměla významný negativní dopad na chemickou odolnost.

New types of highly chemically resistant coating systems, primarily intended for concrete and metal substrates, were designed and experimentally verified in the paper. Secondary raw materials in optimal amounts, including solidified hazardous waste (e.g., end product and cement bypass dust), were used as microfillers. The polymer coating systems, containing pre-treated hazardous waste (HW), showed high abrasion resistance and excellent adhesion to metal and concrete surfaces. Based on polyurethane and epoxy resins, the coatings can be used in environments where aggressive chemical media act, such as sewers and the chemical industry. The developed polymeric coating systems showed even better properties than the compared reference coating systems. The chemical resistance of the three-layer coating systems was evaluated both visually and based on changes in mechanical properties, such as hardness and adhesion. The microstructure of the coating systems was also monitored using a digital optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) after chemical stress. It was observed that the particles of HW were fully incorporated into the polymer matrix of the coating systems., V příspěvku byly navrženy a experimentálně ověřeny nové typy vysoce chemicky odolných nátěrových systémů, primárně určených pro betonové a kovové podklady. Jako mikroplniva byly použity druhotné suroviny v optimálním množství, včetně solidifikovaného nebezpečného odpadu (např. end-produkt a cementové odprašky). Polymerní nátěrové systémy obsahující předupravený nebezpečný odpad (HW) vykazovaly vysokou odolnost proti oděru a vynikající přilnavost ke kovovým a betonovým povrchům. Nátěry na bázi polyuretanových a epoxidových pryskyřic lze použít v prostředí, kde působí agresivní chemická média, jako jsou kanalizace a chemický průmysl. Vyvinuté polymerní nátěrové systémy vykazovaly ještě lepší vlastnosti než srovnávané referenční nátěrové systémy. Chemická odolnost třívrstvých nátěrových systémů byla hodnocena jak vizuálně, tak na základě změn mechanických vlastností, jako je tvrdost a adheze. Mikrostruktura nátěrových systémů byla také sledována pomocí digitálního optického mikroskopu a rastrovacího elektronového mikroskopu s energiově disperzní spektrometrii (SEM-EDX) po chemickém namáhání. Bylo pozorováno, že částice HW byly plně začleněny do polymerní matrice nátěrových systémů.

The use of suitable secondary raw materials as fillers in progressive, protective agents primarily intended for horizontal concrete construction is very effective not only from the ecological but also from the economic point of view. The impact of using various types of waste glass as fillers on the mechanical parameters of epoxy coatings was experimentally verified. Assessing the dependency of the coating’s chemical resistance on the shape of the used filler’s particles was the main aim of the performed research. A solvent-free epoxy suitable for a chemically aggressive environment was selected for the experiment. These were epoxy coatings filled with a micro filler based on raw materials such as glass flakes and silica flour. Three tested formulations containing fillers with different particle shapes and characteristics were exposed to H2SO4, HCl, CH2O2 and NaOH at concentrations of 5% and 30% and evaluated after 60, 90 and 120 days. The chemical resistance assessment was carried out not only visually but also using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Thanks to the use of the waste glass as a coating filler, tensile properties and hardness improved, and its use did not negatively affect the chemical resistance and adhesion of the epoxy coatings. It was found that the shape of the filler particles influences the resistance of the coating against a chemically aggressive environment. The epoxy coating containing pre-treated waste windshield glass (shards) showed even better properties than the reference coating., Použití vhodných druhotných surovin jako plniv do progresivních ochranných materiálů primárně určený pro vodorovné betonové konstrukce je velmi efektivní nejen z ekologického, ale i ekonomického hlediska. Experimentálně byl ověřen vliv použití různých druhů odpadního skla jako plniv na mechanické parametry epoxidových nátěrů. Hlavním cílem provedeného výzkumu bylo posouzení závislosti chemické odolnosti povlaku na tvaru částic použitého plniva. Bezrozpouštědlová epoxidová pryskyřice vhodná do chemicky agresivního prostředí byla vybrána pro provedení experimentů. Jednalo se o epoxidové nátěry plněné mikroplnivem na bázi surovin, jako jsou skleněné vločky a křemičitá moučka. Tři testované nátěry obsahující plniva s různými tvary částic a charakteristikami byly vystaveny působení H2SO4, HCl, CH2O2 a NaOH v koncentracích 5 % a 30 % a hodnoceny po 60, 90 a 120 dnech. Hodnocení chemické odolnosti bylo provedeno nejen vizuálně, ale také pomocí skenovacího elektronového mikroskopu (SEM). Díky použití odpadního skla jako plniva nátěrů se zlepšily tahové vlastnosti a tvrdost a jeho použití neovlivnilo negativně chemickou odolnost a přilnavost epoxidových nátěrů k podkladu. Bylo zjištěno, že tvar částic plniva ovlivňuje odolnost nátěru proti chemicky agresivnímu prostředí. Epoxidový nátěr obsahující předupravené odpadní autoskla (střepy) vykazoval ještě lepší vlastnosti než referenční nátěr.
