1. Microsecond-Latency Feedback at a Particle Accelerator by Online Reinforcement Learning on Hardware

Abstract

The commissioning and operation of future large-scale scientific experiments will challenge current tuning and control methods. Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms are a promising solution thanks to their capability of autonomously tackling a control problem based on a task parameterized by a reward function. The conventionally utilized machine learning (ML) libraries are not intended for microsecond latency applications, as they mostly optimize for throughput performance. On the other hand, most of the programmable logic implementations are meant for computation acceleration, not being intended to work in a real-time environment. To overcome these limitations of current implementations, RL needs to be deployed on-the-edge, i.e. on to the device gathering the training data. In this paper we present the design and deployment of an experience accumulator system in a particle accelerator. In this system deep-RL algorithms run using hardware acceleration and act within a few microseconds, enabling the use of RL for control of ultra-fast phenomena. The training is performed offline to reduce the number of operations carried out on the acceleration hardware. The proposed architecture was tested in real experimental conditions at the Karlsruhe research accelerator (KARA), serving also as a synchrotron light source, where the system was used to control induced horizontal betatron oscillations in real-time. The results showed a performance comparable to the commercial feedback system available at the accelerator, proving the viability and potential of this approach. Due to the self-learning and reconfiguration capability of this implementation, its seamless application to other control problems is possible. Applications range from particle accelerators to large-scale research and industrial facilities.

2. BORA: A Personalized Data Display for Large-scale Experiments

Abstract

Given the rapid improvement of the detectors at high-energy physics experiments, the need for real-time data monitoring systems has become imperative. The significance of these systems lies in their ability to display experiment status, steer software and hardware instrumentation, and provide alarms, thus enabling researchers to manage their experiments better. However, researchers typically build most data monitoring systems as standalone in-house solutions that cannot be reused for other experiments or future upgrades. We present BORA (personalized collaBORAtive data display), a lightweight browser-based monitoring system that supports diverse protocols and is built specifically for customizable visualization of complex data, which we standardize via video streaming. We show how absolute positioning layout and visual overlay background can address the diverse data display design requirements. Using the client-server architecture, we enable support for diverse communication protocols, with the server component responsible for parsing the incoming data. We integrate the Jupyter Notebook as part of our ecosystem to address the limitations of the web-based framework, providing a foundation to leverage scripting capabilities and integrate popular AI frameworks. Since video streaming is a core component of our framework, we evaluate viable approaches to streaming protocols like HLS, WebRTC, and MPEG-Websocket. The study explores the implications for our use case, highlighting its potential to transform data visualization and decision-making processes.

Abstract

We present a detailed simulation study of the signatures from the sequential decays of the triple-strange pbar p -> {\Omega}+{\Omega}- -> K+{\Lambda}barK- {\Lambda} -> K+pbar{\pi}+K-p{\pi}- process in the PANDA central tracking system with focus on hit patterns and precise time measurement. We present a systematic approach for studying physics channels at the detector level and develop input criteria for tracking algorithms and trigger lines. Finally, we study the beam momentum dependence on the reconstruction efficiency for the PANDA detector.

Abstract

The detection of rapid dynamics in diverse physical systems is traditionally very difficult and strongly dominated by several noise contributions. Laser mode-locking, electron bunches in accelerators and optical-triggered phases in materials are events that carry important information about the system from which they emerge. To under- stand the underlying dynamics of complex systems often large numbers of single-shot measurements must be acquired continuously over a long time with extremely high temporal resolution. Ultrafast real-time instruments allow the acquisition of large data sets, even for rare events, in a relatively short time period. The real-time measurement of fast single-shot events with large record lengths is one of the most challenging problems in the fields of instrumentation and measurement. In this contribution, the novel ultra-fast and continuous data sampling system THERESA using photonic time-stretch is presented and its performance is discussed. The pro- posed data acquisition system is based on the latest ZYNQ Radio Frequency System on Chip (ZYNQ-RFSoC) family from Xilinx, which combines an array of fast (GS/s) multi-channel Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) with a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and a multi-core ARM processor in a single heterogeneous programmable device. The stretched pulse is sampled in parallel by 16 wideband sampling channels operating in time-interleaving mode. The sampled data is transferred by a 100 Gb Ethernet data link to the Data Acquisition (DAQ) compute node for further analysis. The combination of both, the photonic time-stretch and the fast sampling system, is capable of sampling short pulses with femtosecond time resolution. Applications of the new system, hardware implementation and the commissioning of the first system for the electron bunch diagnostics are presented.

Abstract

To understand the underlying complex beam diagnostic often large numbers of single-shot measurements must be acquired continuously over a long time with extremely high temporal resolution. Photonic time-stretch is a measurement method that is able to overcome speed limitations of con- ventional digitizers and enable continuous ultra-fast single- shot terahertz spectroscopy with refresh rates of trillions of consecutive frames. In this contribution, a novel ultra- fast data sampling system based on photonic time-stretch is presented and the performance is discussed. THERESA (TeraHErtz REadout SAmpling) is a data acquisition system based on the recent ZYNQ-RFSoC family. THERESA has been developed with an analog bandwidth up to 20 GHz and a sampling rate up to 90 GS/s. When combined with the photonic time-stretch setup, the system will be able to sample a THz signal with an unprecedented frame rate of 8 TS/s. Abstract

Modern particle accelerator facilities allow new and exciting beam properties and operation modes. Traditional real-time control systems, albeit powerful, have bandwidth and latency constraints that limit the range of operating conditions currently made available to users. The capability of Reinforcement Learning to perform self-learning control policies by interacting with the accelerator is intriguing. The extreme dynamic conditions require fast real-time feedback throughout the whole control loop from the diagnostic, with novel and intelligent detector systems, all the way to the interaction with the accelerator components. In this contribution, the novel KINGFISHER framework based on the modern Xilinx Versal devices will be presented. Versal combines several computational engines, specifically combining powerful FPGA logic with programmable AI Engines in a single device. Abstract

A very common bottleneck to study short electron bunch dynamics in accelerators is a detection scheme that can deal with high repetition rates in the MHz range. The KIT electron storage ring KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator) is the first storage ring with a near-field single-shot electro-optical (EO) bunch profile monitor installed for the measurement of electron bunch dynamics in the longitudinal phase-space. Using electro-optical spectral decoding (EOSD) it is possible to imprint the bunch profile on chirped laser pulses subsequently read out by a spectrometer and a camera. However, commercially available cameras have a drawback in their acquisition rate, which is limited to a few hundred kHz. Hence, we have developed KALYPSO, an ultra-fast line camera capable of operating in the MHz regime. Its modular approach allows the installation of several sensors e.g. Si, InGaAs, PbS, PbSe to cover a wide range of spectral sensitivities. Das menschliche Verständnis von Raum und Struktur ist stark an die Wahrnehmung von Farbe gebunden. Aus diesem Grund ist die Farbqualität von Fotoaufnahmen heutzutage von enormer Wichtigkeit. In dieser Arbeit soll der Farbaufnahmeprozess des FARO Laser Scanners Focus 3D dahingehend untersucht und optimiert werden, dass möglichst ideale Farbbilder aufgenommen werden können. Dazu müssen verschiedene Schwierigkeiten, die sich aus dem technischen Hintergrund des Farbaufnahmeprozesses ergeben, berücksichtigt werden. Darüber hinaus müssen verschiedenen Rahmenbedingungen eingehalten werden, die sich aus der späteren Verwendung der erhaltenen Farbaufnahmen ergeben. So wird zum Beispiel nicht nur mit einzelnen Aufnahmen, sondern mit einer ganzen Reihe von Aufnahmen gearbeitet, die anschließend zu einem Gesamtbild zusammengesetzt werden müssen. Auch der Farbeindruck, die empfundene Farbhelligkeit und der erkennbare Detailgehalt der Aufnahmen spielen eine entscheidende Rolle. Zur Optimierung des Farbaufnahmeprozesses wird zuerst der bereits bestehende Prozess auf Mängel untersucht und diese möglichst behoben. Anschließend wird ein Prozess zur weiteren Verbesserung der Bildqualität unter schwierigen Aufnahmebedingungen konzipiert und implementiert.

Abstract

The commissioning of a new real-time and high-accuracy data acquisition system suitable for recording individual ultra-short coherent pulses detected by fast terahertz detectors will be presented. The system is able to monitor turn-by-turn all buckets in streaming mode. The main board consists of a direct sampling board operating with a minimum sampling time of 3 psec and a time jitter less than 1.7 psec. The very low noise layout design combined with a wide dynamic range and bandwidth of the analog front-end allows to sample pulse signals generated by various GHz/THz detectors, like NbN and YBCO superconductor film detectors or zero biased Schottky Diode detectors. The digitized data is transmitted to the DAQ system by an FPGA readout board with a data transfer rate of 4 GByte/s. The setup is accomplished by a real-time data processing unit based on high-end graphics processors (GPUs) for on-line analysis of the frequency behaviour of the coherent synchrotron emissions. The system has been successfully used to study the beam properties of the ANKA synchrotron radiation source located at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and operating in the energy range between 0.5-2.5 GeV, Proceedings of the 5th Int.
