Search

Developing low-power, high-sensitivity photodetectors for the terahertz (THz) band that operate at room temperature is an important challenge in optoelectronics. In this study, we introduce a photo-thermal-electric (PTE) effect detector based on quasi-free standing bilayer graphene (BLG) on a silicon carbide (SiC) substrate, designed for the THz frequency range. Our detector's performance hinges on a quasi-optical coupling scheme, which integrates an aspherical silicon lens, to optimize impedance matching between the THz antenna and the graphene p-n junction. At room temperature, we achieved a noise equivalent power (NEP) of less than 300 $pW/\sqrt{Hz}$. Through an impedance matching analysis, we coupled a planar antenna with a graphene p-n junction, inserted in parallel to the nano-gap of the antenna, via two coupling capacitors. By adjusting the capacitors and the antenna arm length, we tailored the antenna's maximum infrared power absorption to specific frequencies. The sensitivity, spectral properties, and scalability of our material make it an ideal candidate for future development of far-infrared detectors operating at room temperature., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Chiral pumping from optical electric fields oscillating at THz frequencies is observed in the Weyl material TaAs with electric and magnetic fields aligned along both the a- and c-axes. Free carrier spectral weight enhancement is measured directly for the first time, confirming theoretical expectations of chiral pumping. A departure from linear field-dependence of the Drude weight is observed at the highest fields in the quantum limit, providing direct evidence of field-dependent Fermi velocity of the chiral Landau level. Implications for the chiral magnetic effect in Weyl semimetals from the optical f-sum rule are discussed.

Optical measurements and band structure calculations are reported on 3D Dirac materials. The electronic properties associated with the Dirac cone are identified in the reflectivity spectra of Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi single crystals. In Na$_3$Bi, the plasma edge is found to be strongly temperature dependent due to thermally excited free carriers in the Dirac cone. The thermal behavior provides an estimate of the Fermi level $E_F=25$ meV and the z-axis Fermi velocity $v_z = 0.3 \text{ eV} \AA$ associated with the heavy bismuth Dirac band. At high energies above the $\Gamma$-point Lifshitz gap energy, a frequency and temperature independent $\epsilon_2$ indicative of Dirac cone interband transitions translates into an ab-plane Fermi velocity of $3 \text{ eV} \AA$. The observed number of IR phonons rules out the $\text{P}6_3\text{/mmc}$ space group symmetry but is consistent with the $\text{P}\bar{3}\text{c}1$ candidate symmetry. A plasmaron excitation is discovered near the plasmon energy that persists over a broad range of temperature. The optical signature of the large joint density of states arising from saddle points at $\Gamma$ is strongly suppressed in Na$_3$Bi consistent with band structure calculations that show the dipole transition matrix elements to be weak due to the very small s-orbital character of the Dirac bands. In Cd$_3$As$_2$, a distinctive peak in reflectivity due to the logarithmic divergence in $\epsilon_1$ expected at the onset of Dirac cone interband transitions is identified. The center frequency of the peak shifts with temperature quantitatively consistent with a linear dispersion and a carrier density of $n=1.3\times10^{17}\text{ cm}^{-3}$. The peak width gives a measure of the Fermi velocity anisotropy of $10\%$, indicating a nearly spherical Fermi surface. The lineshape gives an upper bound estimate of 7 meV for the potential fluctuation energy scale., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

The origin of the colossal magnetodielectric effect in DyMn2O5 [1] has been an outstanding question in multiferroics. Here, we report the activation of the electric dipole mode at 4-5 cm-1 in an applied magnetic field which fully accounts for the CMD effect. We examine two alternative explanations of this mode: an electromagnon and transitions between f-electron levels of Dy3+ ions. The photovoltaic and bolometric photoresponse in gapped bilayer graphene was investigated by optical and transport measurements. A pulse coincidence technique at 1.5 um was used to measure the response times as a function of temperature. The bolometric and photovoltaic response times were found to be identical implying that the photovoltaic response is also governed by hot electron thermal relaxation. Response times of tau ~ 100 - 20 ps were found for temperatures from 3 - 100 K. Above 10 K, the relaxation time was observed to be tau = 25 +/- 5 ps, independent of temperature within noise., Comment: 4 figures

Detection of infrared light is central to diverse applications in security, medicine, astronomy, materials science, and biology. Often different materials and detection mechanisms are employed to optimize performance in different spectral ranges. Graphene is a unique material with strong, nearly frequency-independent light-matter interaction from far infrared to ultraviolet, with potential for broadband photonics applications. Moreover, graphene's small electron-phonon coupling suggests that hot-electron effects may be exploited at relatively high temperatures for fast and highly sensitive detectors in which light energy heats only the small-specific-heat electronic system. Here we demonstrate such a hot-electron bolometer using bilayer graphene that is dual-gated to create a tunable bandgap and electron-temperature-dependent conductivity. The measured large electron-phonon heat resistance is in good agreement with theoretical estimates in magnitude and temperature dependence, and enables our graphene bolometer operating at a temperature of 5 K to have a low noise equivalent power (33 fW/Hz1/2). We propose a device in which the spin-polarized AC plasmon mode in the surface state of a topological insulator nanostructure induces a static spin accumulation in a resonant, normal metal structure coupled to it. Using a finite-difference time-domain model, we simulate this spin-pump mechanism with drift, diffusion, relaxation, and precession in a magnetic field. We report the first terahertz Kerr measurements on bulk crystals of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. At T=10K and fields up to 8T, the real and imaginary Kerr angle and reflectance measurements utilizing both linearly and circularly polarized incident radiation were measured at a frequency of 5.24meV. A single fluid free carrier bulk response can not describe the line-shape. Surface states with a small mass and surprisingly large associated spectral weight quantitatively fit all data. However, carrier concentration inhomogeneity has not been ruled out. A method employing a gate is shown to be promising for separating surface from bulk effects., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The infrared Hall angle in optimally doped single crystal $\rm Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+x}$ was measured from 3.05 to 21.75 meV as a continuous function of temperature from 25 to 300\,K. In the normal state, the temperature dependence of the real part of the cotangent of the infrared Hall angle obeys the same power law as dc measurements. The measured Hall frequency $\rm \omega_H$ is significantly larger than the expected value based upon ARPES data analyzed in terms of the relaxation time approximation. This discrepancy as well as the temperature dependence of $\rm Re(\cot{\theta_H})$ and $\omega_H$ is well described by a Fermi liquid theory in which current vertex corrections produced by electron-magnon scattering are included., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

The complex Faraday angle and transmission for the topological insulator Bi2Se3 were measured in the far infrared in magnetic fields up to 8 T and analyzed in terms of a simple Drude-Lorentz magneto-plasma dielectric model. Bulk carriers dominate the optical response. The bulk carriers are electrons as we determined from the sign of the Faraday angle. We obtain the bulk band edge cyclotron mass m_cb = 0.16 +- 0.01 m_e and free electron concentration in the 10^17 range. A far-infrared system measures the full complex Faraday angle, rotation as well as ellipticity, with an unprecedented accuracy of 10\,$\mu$rad/T. The system operates on several far-infrared laser lines in the spectral range from 0.3 to 6 THz and produces results as a continuous function of temperature from 10 to 310K and applied fields between $\pm$ 8\,T. Materials successfully measured include GaAs 2-DEG heterostructures, various high temperature superconductors including Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$, Pr$_{2 - x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$, and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, and single crystals of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$., Comment: Submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments (RSI)

We present magneto-transport measurements performed on underdoped PCCO at THz frequencies as a function of temperature and doping. A rapidly decreasing Hall mass is observed as the doping is reduced consistent with the formation of small electron Fermi pockets. However, both dc and infrared (IR) magneto-transport data strongly deviate from the predictions of transport theory in the relaxation time approximation (RTA) based on angular resolved photoemission data. The Hall mass is observed to increase continuously with increasing temperature with no signature at the Neel temperature. In the paramagnetic state, the temperature dependence of the Hall mass is consistent with current vertex corrections to the Hall conductivity due to magnetic fluctuations as observed in overdoped PCCO. Possible causal mechanisms for the discrepancy between transport theory within the RTA and the magneto-transport data are discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The anomalous magneto-transport properties in electron doped (n-type) cuprates were investigated using Hall measurements at THz frequencies. The complex Hall angle was measured in overdoped Pr$_{\rm 2-x}$Ce$_{\rm x}$CuO$_{\rm 4}$ samples (x=0.17 and 0.18) as a continuous function of temperature above $T_c$ at excitation energies 5.24 and 10.5 meV. The results, extrapolated to low temperatures, show that inelastic scattering introduces electron-like contributions to the Hall response. First principle calculations of the Hall angle that include current vertex corrections (CVC) induced by electron interactions mediated by magnetic fluctuations in the Hall conductivity reproduce the temperature, frequency, and doping dependence of the experimental data. These results show that CVC effects are the source of the anomalous Hall transport properties in overdoped n$\text{-}$type cuprates., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The origin of electromagnon excitations in cycloidal \textit{R}MnO$_3$ is explained in terms of the Heisenberg coupling between spins despite the fact that the static polarization arises from the much weaker Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange interaction. We present a model that incorporates structural characteristics of this family of manganites that is confirmed by far infrared transmission data as a function of temperature and magnetic field and inelastic neutron scattering results. We summarize the existing experimental data on electromagnons in multiferroic RMn2O5 compounds, where R denotes a rare earth ion, Y or Bi, and discuss a realistic microscopic model of these materials based on assumption that the microscopic mechanism of magnetically-induced ferroelectricity and electromagnon absorption relies entirely on the isotropic Heisenberg exchange and magnetostrictive coupling of spins to a polar lattice mode and does not involve relativistic effects. This model explains many magnetic and optical properties of RMn2O5 manganites, such as the spin re-orientation transition, magnetically-induced polarisation, appearance of the electromagnon peak in the non-collinear spin state and the polarisation of light for which this peak is observed. Motivated by the recent experimental observation of quantum oscillations in the underdoped cuprates, we study the cyclotron and infrared Hall effective masses in an anisotropic Fermi liquid characterized by an angle-dependent quasiparticle residue Z_q, which models an arc-shaped Fermi surface. Our primary motivation is to explain the relatively large value of the cyclotron effective mass observed experimentally and its relation with the effective Hall mass. In the framework of a phenomenological model of an anisotropic Fermi liquid, we find that the cyclotron mass is enhanced by a factor <1/Z_q>, while the effective Hall mass is proportional to / , where <...> implies an averaging over the Fermi surface. We conclude that if the Z-factor becomes small in some part of the Fermi surface (e.g., in the case of a Fermi arc), the cyclotron mass is enhanced sharply while the infrared Hall mass may remain small. The infrared phonon spectrum of the spinel CdCr2O4 is measured as a function temperature from 6 K to 300K. The triply degenerate Cr phonons soften in the paramagnetic phase as temperature is lowered below 100 K and then split into a singlet and doublet in the low T antiferromagnetic phase which is tetragonally distorted to relieve the geometric frustration in the pyrochlore lattice of Cr$^{3+}$ ions. The phonon splitting is inconsistent with the simple increase (decrease) in the force constants due to deceasing (increasing) bond lengths in the tetragonal phase. Rather they correspond to changes in the force constants due to the magnetic order in the antiferromagnetic state. The phonon splitting in this system is opposite of that observed earlier in ZnCr2O4 as predicted by theory. We report the performance of a silicon wafer beamsplitter for use for low $\Delta\nu>0.3 cm^{-1}$ resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy at far infrared frequencies. We characterize the Si beamsplitter by comparing throughput spectra measured with it to those measured with the standard Mylar beamsplitters commonly used in that range. We find that the throughput of the silicon beamsplitter is substantially greater than that of the Mylar beamsplitters over most of the IR spectrum, and that they are comparable in some limited ranges. The 2 mm silicon beamsplitter has an etalon spacing of about 0.7 cm^{-1}, which interferes with its use for $0.1 cm^{-1}<\Delta\nu < 0.3cm^{-1}$. The average efficiency of the Si beamsplitter is 0.37 compared with a maximum efficiency of 0.35 for Mylar. The Si is particularly more efficient in the 100 to 400 cm^{-1} range because of absorption in Mylar., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, minor changes

We report the spectra of magnetically induced electric dipole absorption in Eu$_{0.75}$Y$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ from temperature dependent far infrared spectroscopy (10-250 cm$^{-1}$). These spectra, which occur only in the $e||a$ polarization, consist of two relatively narrow electromagnon features that onset at $T_{FE}=30$ K and a broad absorption band that persists to temperatures well above $T_N=47$ K. The observed excitations account for the step up of the static dielectric constant in the ferroelectric phase. The electromagnon at 80 cm$^{-1}$ is observed to be strongly coupled to the nearby lowest optical phonon which transfers more than 1/2 of its spectral weight to the magnon. We attribute the origin of the broad background absorption to the two magnon emission decay process of the phonon., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

he frequency dependence in the mid IR from 900 to 1100 cm$^{-1}$ and far IR at 84 cm$^{-1}$ and temperature dependence from 35 to 330 K of the normal state Hall transport is reported in single crystal, optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. The results show a nearly Drude behavior in the Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}$, which stands in contrast to the more complex extended Drude behavior for the longitudinal conductivity $\sigma_{xx}$. The mid IR Hall scattering rate increases linearly with temperature and has a small, positive, projected intercept of 200 cm$^{-1}$ at T=0. In contrast, the longitudinal scattering rate is much larger and exhibits very little temperature dependence. The spectral weight of $\sigma_{xy}$ is suppressed to 0.09 times the band value, whereas the spectral weight of $\sigma_{xx}$ is 0.33 times the band value. We report infrared Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}(\omega)$ of Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$ thin films determined from Faraday rotation angle $\theta_{F}$ measurements. $\sigma_{xy}(\omega)$ exhibits two types of hole conduction, Drude and incoherent carriers. The coherent Drude carrier shows a large renormalized mass and Fermi liquid-like behavior of Hall scattering rate, $\gamma_{H} \sim aT^{2}$. The spectral weight is suppressed and disappears at T = 120K. The incoherent carrier response is centered at mid-IR frequency and shifts to lower energy with increasing T. Based on temperature dependent far infrared transmission spectra of YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5 single crystals, we report the observation of electric dipole-active magnetic excitations, or electromagnons, in these multiferroics. Electromagnons are found to be directly responsible for the step-like anomaly of the static dielectric constant at the commensurate--incommensurate magnetic transition and are the origin of the colossal magneto-dielectric effect reported in these multiferroics., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted

The infrared (IR) active phonons in multiferroic TbMn$_2$O$_5$ are studied as a function of temperature. Most of the symmetry allowed IR modes polarized along the \textit{a} and \textit{b} crystal axes are observed and the behavior of several \textit{b} polarized phonons is correlated with the magnetic and ferroelectric transitions. A high frequency \textit{b} polarized phonon only Raman allowed in the paraelectric phase becomes IR active at the ferroelectric transition. The IR strength of this mode is proportional to the square of the ferroelectric order parameter and gives a sensitive measure of the symmetry lowering lattice distortions in the ferroelectric phase., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. We report a study of magneto-optical properties in the mid-infrared region of a series of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ samples with hole doping level ranging from severely underdoped ($x=0.03$)to optimally doped ($x=0.15$). The Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in a magnetic field of 8 Tesla and in a temperature range between 30K and 300K. The doping and temperature dependence of infrared Hall angle is found to be understood within a simple Drude model. A significant increase of Hall frequency is observed when the hole doping level is reduced from optimal doping, which is compared with models of the pseudogap.

Heterodyne polarometry is used to measure the frequency dependence in the mid IR from 900 to 1100 cm$^-1$ and temperature dependence from 35 to 330 K of the normal state Hall transport in single crystal, optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. The results show a simple Drude behavior in the Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}$ which stands in contrast to the more complex, extended Drude behavior for the longitudinal conductivity $\sigma_{xx}$. The mid IR Hall scattering rate $\gamma_{xy}$ increases linearly with temperature and has a small, positive, projected intercept at T=0. The longitudinal scatter rate, in contrast, is much larger and exhibits very little temperature dependnece. The Hall frequency indicates a carrier mass which is 6.7 times the band mass and which decreases slighly with increasing frequency. The electron-doped cuprate Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) is investigated using infrared magneto-optical measurements. The optical Hall conductivity sigma_{xy} shows a strong doping, frequency and temperature dependence consistent with the presence of a temperature and doping-dependent coherent backscattering amplitude which doubles the electronic unit cell. The data suggest that the coherent backscattering vanishes at a quantum critical point inside the superconducting dome and is associated with the commensurate antiferromagnetic order observed by other workers. Using a spectral weight analysis we have further investigated the Fermi-liquid like behavior of the overdoped sample. The observed Hall-conductance spectral weight is about 10 times less than that predicted by band theory, raising the fundamental question concerning the effect of Mott and antiferromagnetic correlations on the Hall conductance of strongly correlated materials.

The spin-lattice coupling plays an important role in strongly frustrated magnets. In ZnCr$_2$O$_4$, an excellent realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the ``pyrochlore'' network, a lattice distortion relieves the geometrical frustration through a spin-Peierls-like phase transition at $T_c = 12.5$ K. Conversely, spin correlations strongly influence the elastic properties of a frustrated magnet. By using infrared spectroscopy and published data on magnetic specific heat, we demonstrate that the frequency of an optical phonon triplet in ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ tracks the nearest-neighbor spin correlations above $T_c$. The splitting of the phonon triplet below $T_c$ provides a way to measure of the spin-Peierls order parameter., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have measured optical reflectivity of Li and Ti doped NiO (LTNO) in the infrared range at various temperatures. A Drude-like absorption is found at low energy, $\omega <$ 100 cm$^{-1}$ and its spectral weight increases substantially as temperature decreases. This observation and DC-resistivity result show that LTNO has a conductive grain and resistive boundary. Such composite structure provides evidence of the Maxwell-Wagner (MW) mechanism as the origin of the high dielectric constant $\epsilon_{o}$. We propose a three-phase granular structure and show that this extended MW model explains the observed frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as well as the giant value of $\epsilon_{o}$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The infrared (900-1100 cm-1) Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in the normal state of underdoped High Tc superconductors and used to study the magneto-transport. YBa2Cu3O6+x thin films are investigated in the temperature range 10-300 K in magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla and as a function of oxygen concentration. A dramatic increase of the Hall frequency is observed for underdoped samples which is not consistent with the approach to a Mott transition but is consistent with a partial gapping of the Fermi surface as predicted in charge density wave models., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We present the results of Raman and photoluminescence (PL) studies on epitaxial anatase phase Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_2$ films for $x$ = 0-0.07, grown by pulsed laser deposition. The low doped system ($x$=0.01 and 0.02) shows a Curie temperature of ~700 K in the as-grown state. The Raman spectra from the doped and undoped films confirm their anatase phase. The photoluminescence spectrum is characterized by a broad emission from self-trapped excitons (STE) at 2.3 eV at temperatures below 120 K. This peak is characteristic of the anatase-phase TiO$_2$ and shows a small blueshift with increasing doping concentration. In addition to the emission from STE, the Co-doped samples show two emission lines at 2.77 eV and 2.94 eV that are absent in the undoped film indicative of a spin-flip energy., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The consistency of angle-resolved photoemission and optical conductivity experiments on high temperature superconductors is examined. In the limit (apparently consistent with angle-resolved photoemission data) of an electron self energy with a weak momentum dependence and a strong frequency dependence formulae are derived which directly related quantities measured in the two experiments. Application of the formuale to optimally and overdoped $Bi_{2}Ca_{2}SrCu_{2}O_{8+\delta}$ shows that the total self energy inferred from photoemission measurements cannot be interpreted as a transport scattering rate (in agreement with work of Varma and Abrahams), but that the inelastic part may be so interpreted, if Landau parameter effects are non-negligible.

Occurrence of room temperature ferromagnetism is demonstrated in pulsed laser deposited thin films of Sn1-xCoxO2-d (x<0.3). Interestingly, films of Sn0.95Co0.05O2-d grown on R-plane sapphire not only exhibit ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature close to 650 K, but also a giant magnetic moment of about 7 Bohr-Magneton/Co, not yet reported in any diluted magnetic semiconductor system. We have measured the optical conductivity of single crystal LuMnO3 from 10 to 45000 cm-1 at temperatures between 4 and 300 K. A symmetry allowed on-site Mn $d$-$d$ transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blue shift (~0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in temperature dependence of the quasi-static dielectric constant epsilon_0 below the T_N ~90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Phys. A sensitive polarization modulation technique uses photoelastic modulation and hetrodyne detection to simultaneously measure the Faraday rotation and induced ellipticity in light transmitted by semiconducting and metallic samples. The frequencies measured are in the mid-infrared and correspond to the spectral lines of a CO2 laser. The measured temperature range is continuous and extends from 35 to 330K. A novel heterodyne polarimetry system determines the frequency dependence from 900 to 1100 cm^-1 and temperature dependence from 35 to 330 K of the Hall transport in single crystal, optimally doped BSCCO. The results show a significant disconnect from the behavior of the Hall angle in the existing data for YBCO in the far-infrared, which indicate a negative value for the real part of the Hall angle above 250 cm^-1, whereas that of the current work at 1000 cm^-1 is positive. The current work when analyzed using an extended Drude formalism results in a Hall mass comparable to the ARPES Fermi mass and a scattering rate comparable to the low frequency conductivity and Hall effect scattering rates, which, however, are only 1/4 of the ARPES values., Comment: Changed format

We develop a theory for micro-Raman scattering by single and coupled two-donor states in silicon. We find the Raman spectra to have significant dependence on the donor exchange splitting and the relative spatial positions of the two donor sites. In particular, we establish a strong correlation between the temperature dependence of the Raman peak intensity and the interdonor exchange coupling. Micro-Raman scattering can therefore potentially become a powerful tool to measure interqubit coupling in the development of a Si quantum computer architecture., Comment: Title changed. We report on the optical properties of magnetic cobalt-doped anatase phase titanium dioxide Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-d} films for low doping concentrations, 0 <= x <= 0.02, in the spectral range 0.2 to 5 eV. For well oxygenated films (d << 1) the optical conductivity is characterized by an absence of optical absorption below an onset of interband transitions at 3.6 eV and a blue shift of the optical band edge with increasing Co concentration. The absence of below band gap absorption is inconsistent with theoretical models which contain midgap magnetic impurity bands and suggests that strong on-site Coulomb interactions shift the O-band to Co-level optical transitions to energies above the gap., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; Version 2 - major content revision

Pulsed laser deposited films of Co doped anatase TiO2 are examined for Co substitutionality, ferromagnetism, transport, magnetotransport and optical properties. Our results show limited solubility (up to ~ 2 %) of Co in the as-grown films and formation of Co clusters thereafter. For Ti0.93Co0.07O2-d sample, which exhibits a Curie temperature (Tc) over 1180 K, we find the presence of 20-50 nm Co clusters as well as a small concentration of Co incorporated into the remaining matrix. After being subjected to the high temperature anneal during the first magnetization measurement, the very same sample shows a Tc ~ 650 K and almost full matrix incorporation of Co. This Tc is close to that of as-grown Ti0.99Co0.01O2-d sample (~ 700 K). The transport, magnetotransport and optical studies also reveal interesting effects of the matrix incorporation of Co. These results are indicative of an intrinsic Ti1-xCoxO2-d diluted magnetic semiconductor with Tc of about 650-700 K., Comment: 14 pages + 9 figures

We measure the temperature and frequency dependence of the complex Hall angle for normal state YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ films from dc to far-infrared frequencies (20-250 cm$^{-1}$) using a new modulated polarization technique. We determine that the functional dependence of the Hall angle on scattering does not fit the expected Lorentzian response. We find spectral evidence supporting models of the Hall effect where the scattering $\Gamma_H$ is linear in T, suggesting that a single relaxation rate, linear in temperature, governs transport in the cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; new references added and discussion expanded accordingly

We report on the optical properties of undoped single crystal LaMnO_3, the parent compound of the colossal magneto-resistive manganites. Near-Normal incidence reflectance measurements are reported in the frequency range of 20-50,000 cm-1 and in the temperature range 10-300 K. The optical conductivity, s_1(w), is derived by performing a Kramers-Kronig analysis of the reflectance data. The far-infrared spectrum of s_1(w) displays the infrared active optical phonons. We observe a shift of several of the phonon to high frequencies as the temperature is lowered through the Neel temperature of the sample (T_N = 137 K). The high-frequency s_1(w) is characterized by the onset of absorption near 1.5 eV. This energy has been identified as the threshold for optical transitions across the Jahn-Teller split e_g levels. The spectral weight of this feature increases in the low-temperature state. This implies a transfer of spectral weight from the UV to the visible associated with the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic state. The competition of charge, orbital, and ferromagnetic interactions in layered manganites is investigated by magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. We find that the colossal magnetoresistance effect in the layered compounds results from the interplay of the orbital and ferromagnetic double-exchange correlations. Inelastic scattering by charge-order fluctuations dominates the quasiparticle dynamics in the ferromagnetic-metal state. The scattering is suppressed at low frequencies, consistent with the opening of a charge-density wave pseudogap., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Josephson junctions were photogenerated in underdoped thin films of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ family using a near-field scanning optical microscope. The observation of the Josephson effect for separations as large as 100 nm between two wires indicates the existence of an anomalously large proximity effect and show that the underdoped insulating material in the gap of the junction is readily perturbed into the superconducting state. The critical current of the junctions was found to be consistent with the conventional Josephson relationship. This result constrains the applicability of SO(5) theory to explain the phase diagram of high critical temperature superconductors., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3. Transmission and reflection of thin films are measured in the infrared at temperatures from 10 - 150 K using Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The scattering rate and optical mass are obtained by fitting the far-infrared transmission to a Drude model. The scattering rate shows a T^2 dependence with temperature. The optical mass enhancement differs only slightly from specific heat results. In addition, we compare the infrared spectral weight to band structure calculations [M. Quijada et al., Phys. Rev. Infrared (20-120 cm-1 and 900-1100 cm-1) Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in high Tc superconductors using sensitive polarization modulation techniques. Optimally doped YBCO thin films are studied at temperatures down to 15 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. At 1000 cm-1 the Hall conductivity varies strongly with temperature in contrast to the longitudinal conductivity which is nearly independent of temperature. The Hall scattering rate has a T^2 temperature dependence but, unlike a Fermi liquid, depends only weakly on frequency. A sensitive mid-infrared (MIR, 900-1100 cm-1, 112-136 meV) photo-elastic polarization modulation technique is used to measure simultaneously Faraday rotation and circular dichroism in thin metal films. These two quantities determine the complex AC Hall conductivity. This novel technique is applied to study Au and Cu thin films at temperatures down to 20 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. The Hall frequency is consistent with band theory predictions. We report the first measurement of the MIR Hall scattering rate, which is significantly lower than that derived from Drude analysis of zero magnetic field MIR transmission measurements. We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe_3O_4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at T_V=120K. At temperatures below T_V, we observe a strong gap-like suppression of the optical conductivity below 1000 cm^-1. The structural aspect of the Verwey transition demonstrates itself by the appearance of additional infrared- and Raman-active phonons. The frequencies of the infrared-active phonons show no significant singularities at the transition whereas their linewidths increase. The frequency and linewidth of the Raman-active phonon at 670 cm^-1 changes abruptly at the transition. For T

We calculate the in-plane magnetoresistance $\Delta\rho_{xx}/\rho_{xx}$ of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes for the ``cold spots'' model. In this model, the electron relaxation time $\tau_2\propto1/T^2$ at small regions on the Fermi surface near the Brillouin zone diagonals is much longer than the relaxation time $\tau_1\propto1/T$ at the rest of the Fermi surface ($T$ is temperature). In qualitative agreement with the experiment, we find that Kohler's rule is strongly violated, but the ratio $\Delta\rho_{xx}/\rho_{xx}\tan^2\theta_H$, where $\tan\theta_H$ is the Hall angle, is approximately temperature-independent. We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites Nd_{0.7}Sr _{0.3}MnO_{3}, La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}, and La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. The low-energy optical conductivity in the paramagnetic-insulating state of these materials is characterized by a broad maximum near 1 eV. This feature shifts to lower energy and grows in optical oscillator strength as the temperature is lowered into the ferromagnetic state. It remains identifiable well below Tc and transforms eventually into a Drude-like response. This optical behavior and the activated transport in the paramagnetic state of these materials are consistent with a Jahn-Teller small polaron. The optical spectra and oscillator strength changes compare well with models that include both double exchange and the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the description of the electronic structure., Comment: 27 pages (Latex), 6 figures (PostScript)
