The paper industry is a high water consumer, and effluents from paper mills can contain a high organic load. Advanced wastewater treatment with ozone has proved to be effective although not always economically worthwhile. Considerable cost reductions can be achieved with a combination of ozone treatment with other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and with the (re-)use of AOP treated effluents instead of using fresh water (only). Research has presented aims for improving the efficiency of AOP treatment in order to make new water sources available. The potential for using AOP-treated effluents instead of fresh water in paper mills has been identified in on-site factory investigations. AOP trials using ozone, UV and peroxide have been performed on a laboratory scale. With ozone treatment, improved biodegradability of treated effluents has been achieved and colour was strongly reduced. To test the synergistic effects on colour reduction, UV and peroxide treatment have been performed separately and in combination. The use of UV and peroxide treatment alone revealed only a slight effect on colour reduction but there has been increased reduction of colour using their combination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Defensive Patent Aggregators (DPA) are a new patent intermediary that aims to counter the threat of Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs) to technology practicing firms by preempting patents that can be utilized by PAEs. In this study, we investigate whether and to what extent DPAs are in competition with PAEs for patent aggregation. In our theoretical analysis, we develop a game theoretic model that illustrates the selection of patents for aggregation by DPAs and PAEs, and derive four testable hypotheses regarding differences between the DPAs and PAEs aggregated patents. The model shows that DPAs are unlikely to be in complete competition with PAEs for patent aggregation and there are systematic differences in the characteristics of patents acquired by PAEs and DPAs. Our empirical analysis using U.S. patents aggregated by large PAEs and DPAs from 2008 to 2014 presents corroborating evidence for our hypotheses. Our findings imply that DPAs' patent preemption business model alone may not be sufficient to mitigate the threat of PAEs for technology firms, and point to the important role of public policy intervention. We discuss implications for technology firms and policymakers who seek to establish state-run DPAs. • Examine whether DPAs are in a head-to-head competition with PAEs for patents aggregation. • Specify the differences in the characteristics of aggregated patents between DPAs and PAEs. • DPAs may not be enough to protect technology firms from the threat of PAEs. Context.—: Small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is a rare and lethal tumor, characterized by hypercalcemia and early onset and associated with germline and somatic SMARCA4 variants., Objective.—: To identify all known cases of SCCOHT in the Slovenian population from 1991 to 2021 and present genetic testing results, histopathologic findings, and clinical data for these patients. We also estimate the incidence of SCCOHT., Design.—: We conducted a retrospective analysis of hospital medical records and data from the Slovenian Cancer Registry in order to identify cases of SCCOHT and obtain relevant clinical data. Histopathologic review of tumor samples with assessment of immunohistochemical staining for SMARCA4/BRG1 was undertaken to confirm the diagnosis of SCCOHT. Germline and somatic genetic analyses were performed using targeted next-generation sequencing., Results.—: Between 1991 and 2021, we identified 7 cases of SCCOHT in a population of 2 million. Genetic causes were determined in all cases. Two novel germline loss-of-function variants in SMARCA4 LRG_878t1:c.1423_1429delTACCTCA p.(Tyr475Ilefs*24) and LRG_878t1:c.3216-1G>T were identified. At diagnosis, patients were ages 21 to 41 and had International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, or FIGO, stage IA-III disease. Outcomes were poor, with 6 of 7 patients dying of disease-related complications within 27 months from diagnosis. One patient had stable disease for 12 months while receiving immunotherapy., Conclusions.—: We present genetic, histopathologic, and clinical characteristics for all cases of SCCOHT identified in the Slovenian population during a 30-year period. We report 2 novel germline SMARCA4 variants, possibly associated with high penetrance. The tumor microenvironment, composed of pro- and antitumor immune cells, affects cancer cell behavior. We aimed to evaluate whether tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density and TIL subtypes in core biopsies at the diagnosis of breast cancer patients could predict a pathologic complete response (pCR; ypT0/is ypN0) from neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST). The TIL subtypes were determined based on the proportions of presumably antitumor (CD8+, CXCL13+) and protumor (PD-1+, FOXP3+) immune cells. A prospective, noninterventional study, including 171 participants undergoing NST, was performed. The median TIL density for the entire cohort was 10% (IQR: 3.5-23.8), and 59 (35%) patients achieved pCR. TIL density was positively associated with pCR (univariately and multivariably). In the multivariable logistic regression model, TIL density was an independent predictor of pCR ( p = 0.012, OR 1.27; 95% CI 1.05-1.54) when controlled for age ( p = 0.232), Ki-67 ( p = 0.001), node-negative status ( p = 0.024), and HER2+/triple negative vs. luminal B-like subtype ( p < 0.001). In our sample, higher proportions of PD-1+ TILs and FOXP3+ TILs were associated with a higher probability of pCR but the association was not statistically significant and we could not make any conclusions on the direction of associations in the model with all four biomarkers. In the exploratory multivariable analysis, we showed that only higher CD8+ TILs were associated with pCR. In conclusion, TIL density and its subtypes are associated with pCR.

The diagnostics of Lynch syndrome (LS) is focused on the detection of DNA mismatch repair (MMR) system deficiency. MMR deficiency can be detected on tumor tissue by microsatellite instability (MSI) using molecular genetic test or by loss of expression of one of the four proteins (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2) involved in the MMR system using immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, definitive diagnosis of LS requires the identification of the germline pathogenic variant in one of the MMR genes. In the report, we are presenting interesting novel MLH1 in-frame deletion LRG&#95;216t1:c.2236&#95;2247delCTGCCTGATCTA p.(Leu746&#95;Leu749del) associated with LS. The variant appears to be associated with uncommon isolated loss of PMS2 immunohistochemistry protein staining (expression) in tumor tissue instead of MLH1 and PMS2 protein loss, which is commonly seen with pathogenic variants in MLH1 . The variant was classified as likely pathogenic, based on segregation analysis and molecular characterization of blood and tumor samples. According to the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) guidelines, the following evidence categories of PM1, PM2, PM4, and PP1 moderate have been used for classification of the novel variant. The use of tissue microarray (TMA) technology may substantially reduce the costs of routine testing of breast carcinomas for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status. After a preliminary pilot study comparing the TMA results with those obtained on whole section, which showed an excellent agreement (with kappa values >0.90) for both immunohistochemical and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method, we introduced the TMA technique in our routine work. A total of 1158 invasive breast carcinomas were submitted for the determination of HER2 status, which was assessed in 74 weekly runs. One hundred twenty-five of 1084 surgical specimens (11.5%) were judged as unsuitable for inclusion into TMAs. In 32 of 959 tumors included in TMAs (3.3%), the respective cores were uninformative, and HER2 status was determined on whole sections. Thus, HER2 status was finally determined on TMA in 927 cases (81.1%). A typical weekly run comprised 1 TMA (consisting, on average, of 13 tumors), 2 whole sections of surgical specimens and 1 whole section of core needle biopsy, and the number of processed slides for each method decreased from 16 to 4 per week. In all, 14.7% of tumors were HER2 positive by FISH. In both TMAs and whole sections, immunohistochemical results were in good agreement with FISH for cases scored as 0/1+ (98% and 97%) and for those scored as 3+ (96% and 87%), whereas concordance was poor in cases scored as 2+ (30% and 13%, respectively).
