Currently Alzheimer's disease, which affects more than 20 million people worldwide, can only be definitively diagnosed by histological examination of brain tissue obtained at autopsy or biopsy. There is a great need for an early, noninvasive, sensitive, and easily administered diagnostic test of Alzheimer's disease. Here it is reported that patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease by standard clinical criteria exhibited a marked hypersensitivity in their pupil dilation response to a cholinergic antagonist, tropicamide, placed in their eyes. The availability of inexpensive CMOS technologies that perform well at microwave frequencies has created new opportunities for automated material handling within supply chain management (SCM) that will, in hindsight, be viewed as revolutionary. This article outlines system architecture and circuit design considerations that influence the development of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags through a case study involving a high-performance implementation that achieves throughput of nearly 800 tags/s at a range greater than 10 m. The impact of a novel circuit design approach ideally suited to the power and die area challenges is also discussed. Insights gleaned from first-generation efforts are reviewed as an object lesson in how to make RFID technology for SCM, at a cost measured in pennies per tag, reach its full potential through a Generation 2 standard. The article describes the organizational structure, historical evolution and operational impact of an entry service at the Connecticut Mental Health Center in New Haven. The Assessment and Acute Treatment Service was established to manage the entry process for all clients who want assistance from the Center. This service was provided with additional clinical staff members who were organized by the service head into five multidisciplinary clinical teams. The team was chosen as the structural unit because it would simultaneously offer differentially skilled clinicians, administrative monitoring, training and supervision, and a sentient group for all mental health personnel.

Correctional workers are sensitive to what they understand to be public demand. On a limited number of matters there is one very solid public opinion, sustained by firmly ingrained cultural values. On most issues this is not so, for there is more than one public. The question therefore is, which public do we seek? Different publics take different stands on honesty, prisons, probation, parole, courts. We can't please them all, and we don't want to. Correctional workers must decide to which public they wish to address themselves, hoping to weld together as many as possible into a public that will support a given position. The correctional administrator has an obligation to assert lead ership in forming public opinion, not merely to follow the existing opinion of given publics. He is a disseminator of ideas, but also a formulator, synthesizer, mobilizer. In this, he is scien tific in approach, humble, receptive to contra ideas. He engages the emotions as well as the intellect. He furnishes knowledge, out of which convictions may be formed. Public opinion does not spring into existence of itself. Someone must mobilize it.
