Abstract

Nulling interferometry has been identified as a competitive technique for the detection of extrasolar planets. The technique consists in combining out-of-phase pairs of telescopes to null effectively the light of a bright star an reveal the dim glow of the companion. We have manufactured and tested with monochromatic light an integrated optics component which combines a linear array of 4 telescopes in the nulling mode envisaged by Angel & Wolf (1997). Our testbench simulates the motion of a star in the sky. Abstract

We present a compact setup based on a three-dimensional integrated optical component, allowing the mea- surement of spectrally resolved complex-visibilities for three channels of polychromatic light. We have tested a prototype of the component in R band and showed that accurate complex visibilities could be retrieved over a bandwidth of 50 nm centered at 650 nm (resolution: R=130). Closure phase stability in the order of $\lambda$/60 was achieved implying that the device could be used for spectro-interferometry imaging., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Proc. Abstract

Coherent states and their generalisations, displaced Fock states, are of fundamental importance to quantum optics. Here we present a direct observation of a classical analogue for the emergence of these states from the eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator. To this end, the light propagation in a Glauber-Fock waveguide lattice serves as equivalent for the displacement of Fock states in phase space. Theoretical calculations and analogue classical experiments show that the square-root distribution of the coupling parameter in such lattices supports a new family of intriguing quantum correlations not encountered in uniform arrays. Due to the broken shift-invariance of the lattice, these correlations strongly depend on the transverse position. Consequently, quantum random walks with this extra degree of freedom may be realised in Glauber-Fock lattices., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present, theoretically and experimentally, amorphous photonic lattices exhibiting a band-gap yet completely lacking Bragg diffraction: 2D waveguides distributed randomly according to a liquid-like model responsible for the absence of Bragg peaks as opposed to ordered lattices containing disorder, which always exhibit Bragg peaks. In amorphous lattices the bands are comprised of localized states, but we find that defect states residing in the gap are more localized than the Anderson localization length. Finally, we show how the concept of effective mass carries over to amorphous lattices.

We study experimentally light localization at phase-slip waveguides and at the intersection of phase-slips in a two-dimensional (2D) square photonic lattice. Abstract

We report on the experimental realization of an optical analogue of a quantum geometric potential for light wave packets constrained on thin dielectric guiding layers fabricated in silica by the femtosecond laser writing technology. We further demonstrate the optical version of a topological crystal, with the observation of Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling of purely geometric nature.

Abstract

We study propagation of light in nonlinear diffraction-managed photonic lattices created with arrays of periodically-curved coupled optical waveguides which were fabricated using femtosecond laser writing in silica glass, and titanium indiffusion in LiNbO3 crystals. We identify different regimes of the nonlinear propagation of light beams depending on the input power, and present the first experimental observation of diffraction-managed solitons, which are formed as a result of the interplay between the engineered beam diffraction and nonlinear self-focusing or defocusing. We observe that in self-collimating structures where linear diffraction is suppressed, a novel regime of nonlinear beam diffusion takes place at the intermediate powers before the lattice soliton is formed at higher powers.

Abstract

The influence of the oxygen sub-stoichiometry on the femtosecond laser-induced damage resistance of Y0.26Hf0.74Ox films was investigated in this work. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was applied to analyze the various states of oxygen vacancies (VO), and laser-induced damage measurement was performed using a single 500 fs pulse laser at a wavelength of 1030 nm. Based on the PL spectra, a probable band gap structure with different defect energy levels was obtained, which is significant in explaining an observed inverse correlation between the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) and the concentration of VO. The crystallization and the refractive index, which were previously found to be crucial factors in laser-induced damage resistance of optical thin films, are also closely dependent on the amount of induced oxygen vacancies.

17. On-chip generation of high-order single-photon W-states

Abstract

Quantum superposition is the quantum-mechanical property of a particle whereby it inhabits several of its possible quantum states simultaneously. Ideally, this permissible coexistence of quantum states, as defined on any degree of freedom, whether spin, frequency or spatial, can be used to fully exploit the information capacity of the associated physical system. In quantum optics, single photons are the quanta of light, and their coherence properties allow them to establish entangled superpositions between a large number of channels, making them favourable for realizations of quantum information processing schemes. In particular, single-photon W-states (that is, states exhibiting a uniform distribution of the photons across multiple modes) represent a class of multipartite maximally-entangled quantum states that are highly robust to dissipation. Here, we report on the generation and verification of single-photon W-states involving up to 16 spatial modes, and exploit their underlying multi-mode superposition for the on-chip generation of genuine random numbers.

Abstract

Nulling interferometry has been identified as a competitive technique for the detection of extrasolar planets. In its basic form, the technique consists of combining out-of-phase a single pair of telescopes to effectively null the light of a bright star and reveal the dim glow of the companion. However, in order to mitigate the effect of the stellar leaks through the interferometer, a broad angular central null is required. The hierarchical combination of several pairs of telescopes can accomplish this task. We have manufactured and tested with monochromatic light an integrated optics component, which combines a linear array of four telescopes in the nulling mode envisaged by Angel and Woolf [Astroph. J. 475, 373 -379 (1997).]. By simulating in the laboratory the motion of a star in the sky, we could measure the expected angular transmission of the four-telescope nuller. Abstract

Long-range correlation-the non-local interdependence of distant events-is a crucial feature in many natural and artificial environments. In the context of solid state physics, impurity spins in doped spin chains and ladders with antiferromagnetic interaction are a prominent manifestation of this phenomenon, which is the physical origin of the unusual magnetic and thermodynamic properties of these materials. It turns out that such systems are described by a one-dimensional Dirac equation for a relativistic fermion with random mass. Here we present an optical configuration, which implements this one-dimensional random mass Dirac equation on a chip. On this platform, we provide a miniaturized optical test-bed for the physics of Dirac fermions with variable mass, as well as of antiferromagnetic spin systems. Moreover, our data suggest the occurence of long-range correlations in an integrated optical device, despite the exclusively short-ranged interactions between the constituting channels.

The rectification of light beams in an optical ratchet is reported. This directed transport is implemented using a photonic mesh lattice consisting of sequences of directional couplers. In such a structure, we observe light propagation at an angle that is independent of the input direction of the injected beam.

Abstract

Applying an external driving to a periodic potential drastically modifies both propagation and localization of waves. One important example is dynamic localization (DL), the suppression of broadening of a wave packet during its motion in a periodic potential under the action of an externally applied periodic field [1]. The same effect can occur for optical beams in curved waveguide arrays, where the waveguide bending [see Fig. 1(a)] mimics the effects of the driving field, leading to the cancellation of diffraction [2,3]. Importantly, DL was predicted to occur in multi-dimensional systems, and it was observed in both one- [2] and two-dimensional [3] modulated waveguide arrays. DL was also studied at the boundaries of one-dimensional lattices, where lattice modulation was shown to facilitate the formation of families of new type of defect-free linear surface modes [4,5]. Therefore, an important question is whether such surface modes can also be supported by two-dimensional modulated lattices.

We realize experimentally a true reflectionless potential, which facilitates nonresonant unity transmission for all incident waves and at the same time supports localized modes. We utilize arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides, where a particular modulation of the transverse waveguide separations provides a physical realization of reflectionless Ablowitz-Ladik soliton potentials.

Abstract

We report on the first experimental observation of dynamic localization of light in two-dimensional photonic lattices. We demonstrate suppression of beam diffraction in hexagonal lattices created by weakly coupled waveguides with axis bending. We also reveal that this effect is strongly related to dynamic localization in zigzag waveguide arrays with next-nearest neighboring interactions.

35. Polychromatic dynamic localization in curved photonic lattices

Abstract

Dynamic localization is the suppression of the broadening of a charged-particle wave packet as it moves along a periodic potential in an a.c. electric field. The same effect occurs for optical beams in curved photonic lattices, where the lattice bending has the role of the driving field, and leads to the cancellation of diffraction. Dynamic localization was also observed for Bose-Einstein condensates, and could have a role in the spin dynamics of molecular magnets. It has been predicated that dynamic localization will occur in multi-dimensional lattices at a series of resonances between lattice, particle and driving-field parameters. However, only the first dynamic localization resonance in one-dimensional lattices has been observed in any physical system. Here, we report on the experimental observation of higher-order and mixed dynamic localization resonances in both one- and two-dimensional photonic lattices. New features such as spectral broadening of the dynamic localization resonances and localization-induced transformation of the lattice symmetry are demonstrated. These phenomena could be used to shape polychromatic beams emitted by supercontinuum light sources.

We report the observation of almost perfect light tunneling inhibition at the edge and inside laser-written waveguide arrays due to band collapse. When the refractive index of the guiding channels is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in adjacent guides, light is trapped in the excited waveguide over a long distance due to resonances. Abstract

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional solitons located in defect channels at the surface of a hexagonal waveguide array. The threshold power for the excitation of solitons existing owing to total internal reflection grows with decrease of the refractive index in negative defects and vanishes for sufficiently strong positive defects. Abstract

We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental observation of vector surface solitons, which form at the edge and in the corner of two-dimensional laser-written waveguide arrays. These elliptically polarized vector states are composed of two orthogonally polarized components. They exist only above a power threshold and bifurcate from scalar surface solitons. Abstract

We observe experimentally two-dimensional solitons in superlattices comprising alternating deep and shallow waveguides fabricated via the femtosecond-laser direct writing technique. We find that the symmetry of linear diffraction patterns as well as soliton shapes and threshold powers largely differ for excitations centered on deep and shallow sites. Thus, bulk and surface solitons centered on deep waveguides require much lower powers than their counterparts on shallow sites., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

Abstract

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional surface solitons residing at the interface between a homogeneous square lattice and a superlattice that consists of alternating “deep” and “shallow” waveguides. By exciting single waveguides in the first row of the superlattice, we show that solitons centered on deep sites require much lower powers for their excitation than their respective counterparts centered on shallow sites. Despite the fact that the average refractive index of the superlattice waveguides is equal to the refractive index of the homogeneous lattice, the interface results in clearly asymmetric output patterns., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

Abstract

We report the observation of nonlinearity-induced broadening of resonances in dynamically modulated directional couplers. When the refractive index of the guiding channels in the coupler is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and is out-of-phase in two channels, coupling can be completely inhibited at resonant modulation frequencies. We observe that nonlinearity broadens such resonances and that localization can be achieved even in detuned systems at power levels well below those required in unmodulated couplers., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

We reveal and observe experimentally significant modifications undertaken by discrete solitons in waveguide lattices upon the continuous transformation of the lattice structure from one-dimensional to two-dimensional. We present the first experimental observation of nonlinear beam diffusion and formation of diffraction-managed solitons in periodically-curved arrays of coupled optical waveguides created using femtosecond laser writing in silica glass, and titanium indiffusion in LiNbO3 crystals.

We predict that truncated but otherwise perfect modulated photonic lattices can support a novel type of generic surface states, which are fundamentally different from the previously studied Tamm or Shockley type surface waves, and present the first experimental observation of such defect-free surface waves in laser-written waveguide arrays.

Abstract

We report on the experimental observation of novel defect-free surface modes predicted theoretically for modulated photonic lattices [I. L. Garanovich et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 203904 (2008)]. We generate the linear surface modes in truncated arrays of periodically curved optical waveguides created in fused silica by a laser direct-writing technique. Our results demonstrate that the degree of surface wave localization can be controlled by selecting the waveguide bending amplitude.

Abstract

We address the properties of two-dimensional surface solitons supported by the interface of a waveguide array whose nonlinearity is periodically modulated. When the nonlinearity strength reaches its minima at the points where the linear refractive index attains its maxima, we found that nonlinear surface waves exist and can be made stable only within a limited band of input energy flows and for lattice depths exceeding a lower threshold., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

We report the observation of surface solitons in chirped semi-infinite waveguide arrays whose waveguides exhibit exponentially decreasing refractive indices.
