Abstract

This paper explores the transition between Compton Scattering and Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS), which is characterized by an equal exchange of energy and momentum between the colliding particles (electrons and photons). This regime has been called Symmetric Compton Scattering (SCS) and has the unique property of cancelling the energy-angle correlation of scattered photons, and, when the electron recoil is large, transferring mono-chromaticity from one colliding beam to the other, resulting in back-scattered photon beams that are intrinsically monochromatic. The paper suggests that large-recoil SCS or quasi-SCS can be used to design compact intrinsic monochromatic gamma-ray sources based on compact linacs, thus avoiding the use of GeV-class electron beams together with powerful laser/optical systems as those typically required for ICS sources.

Abstract

This Document contains a complete technical description of the system devoted to the upgrade of the STAR Linear Accelerator (STAR Linac). According to the Contract signed between Universita della Calabria (UniCal) and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) on May 7th, 2021, INFN is committed to install, test and commission the upgrade of the STAR Linac denominated STAR-HE-Linac (STAR High Energy Linac), hereafter STAR-HEL. The technical components as well as the installation / test procedures and the ancillary equipment involved in such an upgrade are the object of this Document, named Complete Detailed Design Report. A technical offer was submitted by INFN in the frame of its participation to the tender issued by UniCal, describing a possible energy upgrade of the STAR Linac, with an electron beam energy boosted from 65 MeV up to 150 MeV by means of Radiofrequency (RF) accelerating sections and power stations based on S-band technology (ie, 2856 MHz RF frequency). Following the Contract signature, INFN conceived and conceptually designed a technology change that offers several advantages both on performances and on operational reliability of STAR-HEL, based on adopting C-band technology (ie, 5712 MHz RF frequency) for accelerating sections and RF power stations. Such a technology change was illustrated in a dedicated document named "improvement option for STAR-2 HE-Linac", addressed to UniCal STAR Management Board and tender R.U.P. for approval on June 9th, 2021. INFN received a formal letter of approval on June 16th, 2021.

Abstract

The design of a future multi-TeV muon collider needs new ideas to overcome the technological challenges related to muon production, cooling, accumulation and acceleration. In this paper a layout of a positron driven muon source known as the Low EMittance Muon Accelerator (LEMMA) concept is presented. The positron beam, stored in a ring with high energy acceptance and low emittance, is extracted and driven to a multi-target system, to produce muon pairs at threshold. This solution alleviates the issues related to the power deposited and the integrated Peak Energy Density Deposition (PEDD) on the targets. Muons produced in the multi-target system will then be accumulated before acceleration and injection in the collider. A multi-target line lattice has been designed to cope with the focusing of both the positron and muon beams. Studies on the number, material and thickness of the targets have been carried out. Abstract

The capability of Free-Electron Lasers to generate photon beams with record performances in the domain of MeV-class photon energy for nuclear photonics applications is here analyzed. We discuss possible nuclear FEL working points. Some typical situations are presented and simulated by means of the three-dimensional code GENESIS 1.3. The losses by spontaneous emission and by wakefield induced energy spread are then evaluated. The calculations show the possibility of generating FEL radiation at 1-4 MeV with less than 300 eV of bandwidth with not prohibitive set up requirements, achieving therefore regimes where no other kind of gamma ray sources could arrive.

Abstract

The conceptual design of a compact source of GeV-class muons is presented, based on a plasma based electron-gamma collider. Evaluations of muon flux, spectra and brilliance are presented, carried out with ad-hoc montecarlo simulations of the electron-gamma collisions. These are analyzed in the context of a large spread of the invariant mass in the e-gamma interaction, due to the typical characteristics of plasma self-injected GeV electron beams, carrying large bunch charges with huge energy spread. The availability of a compact point-like muon source, triggerable at nsec level, may open a completely new scenario in the muon radiography application field.

8. Analytical description of photon beam phase spaces in Inverse Compton Scattering sources

Abstract

We revisit the description of inverse Compton scattering sources and the photon beams generated therein, emphasizing the behavior of their phase space density distributions and how they depend upon those of the two colliding beams of electrons and photons. Main objective is to provide practical formulas for bandwidth, spectral density, brilliance, which are valid in general for any value of the recoil factor, i.e. both in the Thomson regime of negligible electron recoil, and in the deep Compton recoil dominated region, which is of interest for gamma-gamma colliders and Compton Sources for the production of multi-GeV photon beams. We adopt a description based on the center of mass reference system of the electron-photon collision, in order to underline the role of the electron recoil and how it controls the relativistic Doppler/boost effect in various regimes. Comparisons with Monte Carlo simulations of inverse Compton scattering in various scenarios are presented, showing very good agreement with the analytical formulas: in particular we find that the bandwidth dependence on the electron beam emittance, of paramount importance in Thomson regime, as it limits the amount of focusing imparted to the electron beam, becomes much less sensitive in deep Compton regime, allowing a stronger focusing of the electron beam to enhance luminosity without loss of mono-chromaticity. A similar effect occurs concerning the bandwidth dependence on the frequency spread of the incident photons: in deep recoil regime the bandwidth comes out to be much less dependent on the frequency spread., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

As part of the R\&D for the 50 MeV ThomX Compton source project, we have studied the effect of several beam dynamics processes on the evolution of the beam in the ring. The processes studied include among others Compton scattering, intrabeam scattering, coherent synchrotron radiation. We have performed extensive simulations of a full injection/extraction cycle (400000 turns). Abstract

A new laser chirping prescription is derived by means of the phase-stationary method for an incident Gaussian laser pulse in conjunction with a Liénard-Wiechert calculation of the scattered radiation flux and spectral brilliance. This particularly efficient laser chirp has been obtained using the electric field of the laser and for electrons and radiation on axis. The frequency modulation is somewhat reduced with respect to that proposed in the previous literature, allowing the application of this procedure to lasers with larger values of the parameter a0. Numerical calculations have been performed using mildly focused and narrow bandwidth laser pulses, confirming a larger efficiency of the chirp prescription here introduced. Abstract

We present a simple and new scheme for producing multi colour Thomson/Compton radiation with the possibility of controlling separately their polarization, based on the interaction of one single electron beam with two and more laser pulses that can come from the same laser setup or from two different lasers system and that collide with the electrons at different angle inside one optical cavity. One of the most interesting cases for medical applications is to provide two X-ray pulses across the iodine K-edge at 33.2 keV. The iodine is used as contrast medium in various imaging techniques and the availability of two spectral lines accross the K-edge allows one to produce subtraction images with a great increase in accuracy., Proceedings of the 9th Int. Abstract

The ELI-NP Gamma Beam System is an advanced gamma ray source based on the Compton back-scattering effect with unprecedented specifications of brilliance ( >10²¹), monochromaticity (0.5%) and energy tunability (0.2 - 19.5 MeV), presently under construction in Magurele-Bucharest (RO). Here the head-on collision is foreseen between an intense high power laser beam and a high brightness high quality electron beam with a maximum kinetic energy of 740 MeV. Abstract

WEPFI005 - Work is supported by the French "Agence Nationale de la Recherche" as part of the program "investing in the future" under reference ANR-10-EQPX-51, and also by grants from Region Ile-de-France.; International audience; The RF system of the ThomX* storage ring will consist in a 500 MHz single cell copper cavity of the ELETTRA type, powered with a 50 kW CW solid state amplifier, and the associated Low Level RF feedback and control loops. The low operating energy of 50 - 100 MeV makes the impedances of the cavity higher order modes (HOMs) particularly critical for the beam stability. Their parasitic effects on the beam can be cured byHOMfrequency shifting techniques, based on a fine temperature tuning and a dedicated plunger. A typical cavity temperature stability of ± 0.05oC within a range from 35 up to 80 oC can be achieved by a precise control of its water cooling temperature. On the other hand, the tuning of the cavity fundamental mode is achieved by changing its axial length by means of a mechanical tuner. In order to insure a fine control of the HOM frequencies, a good knowledge of their characteristics is mandatory.The main parameters of the fundamental and of the HOMs up to 4 GHz have been calculated using the HFSS and CST MWS codes. Preliminary measurements results have been obtained and show a good agreement with the simulations.

NSC KIPT proposed to construct a new X‐ray and soft ultraviolet source NESTOR with a 40 – 225 MeV electron storage ring in Kharkov. NESTOR is a new type radiation source on the base of Compton scattering and a storage ring. Electrons are injected in the storage ring at 100 MeV and ramped up to final energy of 225 MeV. So, using interaction angle 10° and 150°, the facility covers operation energy range of radiation from soft ultraviolet trough synchrotron radiation from bending magnets up to hard X‐ray radiation through Compton scattering (∼1 eV ∼1 MeV). It is supposed that stored electron beam current will be of about 200 mA. Along with use of Nd:Yag laser of 10 W average power which was developed by High‐Q laser firm and optical resonator with accumulation gain of about 1000 it allows to provide X‐ray radiation flux up to 1011 phot/s. NESTOR is the cooperative facility and its development is supported by Ukrainian government and NATO SfP project ♯977982. It is supposed that NESTOR will be in operation by mid‐2007 year. Abstract

Compton scattering of polarized photon beam by polarized relativistic electron beam is considered in the report. The numerical comparison of Compton scattering intensity and polarization intensity has been carried out for different directions of initial photon and electron polarization. It was shown that the use of polarized beam leads to considerable increasing of Compton scattering intensity in the range of high photon energy for initial electron beam energy beginning from 5 GeV. The effect of initial polarization of photon and electron beams to final polarization of scattered photon beam was considered. Розглянуто комптонівське розсіяння фотонного пучка на поляризованому релятивістському електроні. Розглянуто диференційний перетин комптонівського розсіяння з урахуванням ефектів поляризації. Доведено, що застосування поляризованих пучків призводить до значного зросту спектральної інтенсивності фотонів, в області високих енергій для початкової енергії електронного пучка від 5 ГеВ. Розглянуто вплив поляризації початкових фотонів на поляризацію комптонівських фотонів. Рассматривается комптоновское рассеяние поляризованного фотонного пучка на поляризованном релятивистском электроне. Рассмотрено дифференциальное сечение комптоновского рассеяния с учетом эффектов поляризации. Было сделано сравнение для различных поляризаций. Показано, что применение поляризованных пучков приводит к значительному увеличению спектральной интенсивности фотонов, в области высоких энергий, для начальной энергии электронного пучка от 5 ГэВ. Рассмотрено влияние поляризации начальных фотонов на поляризацию комптоновских фотонов.
