Abstract

To examine library usage by faculty and students in the Schools of Engineering at Purdue University, data was analyzed from a sample of 12,000 loans during a three month period. User level (graduate student, undergraduate, faculty, or staff) and subject of borrowed material as indicated by Dewey Decimal Classification were examined for each major engineering discipline. Results indicated highest percentage of loans in Technology and Pure Science literature. Graduate students accounted for the highest percentage of loans among users. Data and tables for each engineering discipline are provided. Appended are summary tables and figures, including graphs of user levels for the most read subjects. (Author/KP)

Abstract

Price trends for the major operating expenditures of the Purdue University Libraries are examined. Four years of price data on books and serials purchased for various academic disciplines are presented. Price trend data are also presented for other library expenditures including salaries, wages, equipment, telephone, and supplies. It is concluded that although computerization may reduce real labor costs, the price trends indicate that further cost increases can be expected. (Author/DGC)

9. Audio-Visual Equipment Depreciation. RDU-75-07.

Abstract

A study was conducted at Purdue University to gather operational and budgetary planning data for the Libraries and Audiovisual Center. The objectives were: (1) to complete a current inventory of equipment including year of purchase, costs, and salvage value; (2) to determine useful life data for general classes of equipment; and (3) to determine book value, depreciation, replacement schedule, and annual replacement costs for the current inventory. Essential data on each piece of equipment were key punched and a computer program written to produce the following data for each group of equipment: (1) annual purchases in units and dollars, (2) annual depreciation, (3) current book value, and (4) annual scrap units or units to be replaced. Statistical tables were developed on useful life by class of equipment, annual depreciation of current equipment, book value and depreciation write off of audiovisual equipment. Annual summaries of purchases and depreciation for all equipment types and history of purchase of each class of equipment are included. (Author/DS)

Abstract

A study of the Purdue University Libraries was conducted to help allocate costs by user group and academic department. A circulation survey was taken to determine user identification. The sampling included reserve material used in the library, materials borrowed overnight or longer, and use of photocopy service. Copies of transaction cards were made and sent to data processing to be categorized by level, department, and library location. Results of the study were compiled in six statistical tables which indicate the number of loans by location, level of user, and school and department. (Author/DS)

11. A Survey of the Indiana Library TWX Network System as Implemented by the Indiana State Library and the Four State University Libraries.

Abstract

The major objective of this survey is to describe and evaluate current policies, activities, staffing and use of the (Teletype Writer Exchange) TWX System by the Indiana State Library and the four university libraries. Data were collected by the interview method from a total of eighteen employees; each of whom were actively involved in one of the ILL/TWX offices of the five institutions visited. The TWX network is operating reasonably well for the four state university libraries. There was no indication that a major ILL/TWX crisis existed between or among the respective institutions. However, this is not to say that everyone has a clear picture of the current objectives, eventual direction, and outcome of the TWX network and its operation at the university level. In any case, past action among the four state university libraries indicates that as ILL/TWX problems arose, steps were taken to arrive at a satisfactory solution. The ILL/TWX offices of these four institutions do not depend heavily upon the State Library for either leadership or service. Rather, they look to one another, as well as, other major lending libraries outside the State of Indiana for materials which are largely theoretical, scholarly, or esoteric in nature. (Author/NH)

Abstract

In fall 1984, the Georgia Institute of Technology administration and library staff began planning for Library 2000, a project aimed at creating a showcase library to demonstrate the application of the latest information technology in an academic and research environment. The purposes of Library 2000 include: increasing awareness of students, faculty, staff, other libraries, and clients outside the institute about the availability of information and data; enhancing available information resources through the use of online services and optical disks; creating personalized information systems using artificial intelligence to provide up-to-date literature in researchers' areas of interest; and demonstrating that the application of existing technology can enhance information finding efficiency and achieve greater user productivity. Assumptions and goals were developed in a series of brain-storming sessions dealing with the institute's future, technological trends, and library users and clients. Some of the major assumptions about the future include: users and clients will demand increasing amounts of information in numeric, textual, and bibliographic form; the technology to create Library 2000 exists today; books will continue to exist, especially in the humanities and social sciences; some books, particularly reference books, will be replaced by optical disks or online services; Georgia Tech is in an unique position to lead in the application of information technology; and Georgia Tech people are helping make the history of technology.
