This study investigates the use of Atomic Layer deposition (ALD) to mitigate multipacting phenomena inside superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities used in particle accelerators. The unique ALD capability to control the film thickness down to the atomic level on arbitrary complex shape objects enable the fine tuning of TiN film resistivity and total electron emission yield (TEEY) from coupons to devices. This level of control allows us to adequately choose a TiN film thickness that provide both a high resistivity to prevent Ohmic losses and low TEEY to mitigate multipacting for the application of interest. The methodology presented in this work can be scaled to other domain and devices subject to RF fields in vacuum and sensitive to multipacting or electron discharge processes with their own requirements in resistivities and TEEY values

Superconducting qubits have arisen as a leading technology platform for quantum computing which is on the verge of revolutionizing the world's calculation capacities. Nonetheless, the fabrication of computationally reliable qubit circuits requires increasing the quantum coherence lifetimes, which are predominantly limited by the dissipations of two-level system (TLS) defects present in the thin superconducting film and the adjacent dielectric regions. In this paper, we demonstrate the reduction of two-level system losses in three-dimensional superconducting radio frequency (SRF) niobium resonators by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of a 10 nm aluminum oxide Al2O3 thin films followed by a high vacuum (HV) heat treatment at 650 {\deg}C for few hours. By probing the effect of several heat treatments on Al2O3-coated niobium samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) plus scanning and conventional high resolution transmission electron microscopy (STEM/HRTEM) coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and (EDX) , we witness a dissolution of niobium native oxides and the modification of the Al2O3-Nb interface, which correlates with the enhancement of the quality factor at low fields of two 1.3 GHz niobium cavities coated with 10 nm of Al2O3.

Development of new high-entropy oxides having configurational entropy dominating the phase stability has become a hot topic since the discovery of rock salt structure entropy-stabilized (ES)(MgCoNiCuZn)O in 2015. Herein, we report a set of novel entropy-stabilized fluorite oxides: Zr0.2Hf0.2Ce0.2Sn0.2Mn0.2O2-{\delta}, Zr0.2Hf0.2Ti0.2Mn0.2Ce0.2O2-{\delta}, Zr0.225Hf0.225Ti0.225Mn0.225Ce0.1O2-{\delta}, and Zr0.2Hf0.2Ti0.2Mn0.2Ce0.1Ta0.05Fe0.05O2-{\delta} synthesized using standard solid-state reaction. These compounds have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques to discern their structural, microstructural, and chemical properties. The configurational-entropy dominated phase stability and hence the entropy stabilization of the compounds is confirmed by cyclic heat treatments. The mismatch in the ionic radii and oxidation state of the cations are the key factors in achieving a single-phase fluorite structure. Further, screening of physical properties including thermal conductivity, optical band gap, magnetic properties, and impedance spectroscopy is discussed. Thermal conductivity of 1.4-1.7 Wm-1K-1 is observed at 300 K and remains mostly invariant across a wide temperature range (300K-1073K), favorable for thermal barrier coating applications. These ES samples have an optical band gap of 1.6-1.8 eV, enabling light absorption across the visible spectrum and hence could be promising for photocatalytic applications. The impedance spectroscopy data of the entropy-stabilized samples reveal the presence of electronic contributions with small activation energy (0.3-0.4 eV) across a temperature range of 298K-423K. Detailed investigations of structural, magnetic and electronic transport properties of hole-doped high-entropy rare-earth manganites are presented. The high-entropy samples (LaNdPrSmEu)$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (0$\leq$\textit{x}$\leq$0.5), synthesized using the solid-state technique, show a change in the crystal structure from \textit{Pbnm} to \textit{R-3c} with increasing Sr substitution, attributed to the change in the tolerance factor. Prominent ferromagnetic ordering is observed in the sample with a rhombohedral structure (\textit{x}$\geq$0.3), originating from the dominant double exchange mechanism mediated by itinerant electrons. Further, the Curie temperature is smaller for the high-entropy sample with \textit{x}=0.3, as compared to La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$, suggesting a strong relation between the Curie temperature and the Mn-O-Mn bond angle associated with the reduced ionic radii at the rare-earth site. The electrical resistivity of the high-entropy samples is larger than those of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$, which can be ascribed to the reduced bandwidth due to the enhanced structural distortion. A concomitant rise in magnetoresistance is observed for high-entropy samples with the increase in Sr concentration. High-entropy concept introduced with a promising paradigm to obtain exotic physical properties has motivated us to explore the thermoelectric properties of Sr-substituted high-entropy rare-earth cobaltates i.e., (LaNdPrSmEu)$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO3 (0 \leq x \leq 0.10). The structural analysis of the samples synthesized using the standard solid-state route, confirms the orthorhombic structure with the Pbnm space group. The Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity decrease with rising Sr concentration as well as with an increase in temperature. The multiple A-site ions in high-entropy rare-earth cobaltates result in an improved Seebeck coefficient ({\alpha}) compared to La$_{0.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CoO$_3$, associated with a decrease in the Co-O-Co bond angle, which further enhances the power factor. The random distribution of cations at the rare-earth site results in a significant lowering of phonon thermal conductivity. As a result, a maximum figure of merit (zT) of 0.23 is obtained at 350K for (LaNdPrSmEu)$_{0.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CoO$_3$, which is one of the highest values of zT reported at this temperature for oxide materials. Entropic contributions to the stability of solids are very well understood and the mixing entropy has been used for forming various solids, for instance such as inverse spinels. A particular development was related to high entropy alloys in which the configurational disorder is responsible for forming simple solid solutions and which are thoroughly studied for various applications especially due to their mechanical properties but also electrical properties, hydrogen storage, magnetic properties. Many unexplored compositions and properties still remain for this class of materials due to their large phase space. In a recent report it has been shown that the configurational disorder can be used for stabilizing simple solid solutions of oxides, which should normally not form solid solutions, these new materials were called "entropy-stabilized oxides". In this pioneering report, it was shown that mixing five equimolar binary oxides yielded, after heating at high temperature and quenching, an unexpected rock salt structure compound with statistical distribution of the cations in a face centered cubic lattice. Following this seminal study, we show here that these high entropy oxides (named HEOx hereafter) can be substituted by aliovalent elements with a charge compensation mechanism. This possibility largely increases the potential development of new materials by widening their (already complex) phase space. As a first example, we report here that at least one HEOx composition exhibits colossal dielectric constants, which could make it very promising for applications as large-k dielectric materials., Comment: Figures and Supporting Information at the end of the manuscript
