The changes in the characteristics of heatwaves over Romania have been analyzed using the excess heat factor calculated for two climate change scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) from the EURO-CORDEX project. The changes were evaluated for the near future (2021–2050) using the historical period (1971–2000) as reference. The frequency of occurrence and the duration of heatwaves is projected to increase for both climate scenarios in particular over southern Romania. In this region, the percentage of change in the near future for the number of heatwaves is between 50 and 60% for the RCP4.5 scenario and 60–80% for the RCP8.5 scenario. Also for the same region, the duration of heatwaves will increase by 30–50% for the RCP4.5 scenario and 60–80% for the RCP8.5 scenario. These results indicate that the human exposure to heatwaves will increase in Romania in the near future. To increase awareness on heatwaves and their impact, we propose a series of immediate actions that include (1) improving the communication of the impact of heatwaves, (2) identification of the regions where the population is more vulnerable to heatwaves, and (3) better understanding of the mortality and morbidity associate with heatwaves in Romania.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most frequently encountered mesenchymal tumors that develop anywhere along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, but they account for less than 1% of all GI tumors. However, GISTs can also develop outside the GI tract. They are referred to as extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) and represent around 5-10% of all GISTs. In this latter case, the tumor itself is not connected to the GI tract and can affect the omentum, mesentery, and retroperitoneum. EGISTs can also originate from the pancreas, but they are extremely uncommon. It is estimated that pancreatic EGISTs account for about 5% of all EGISTs, with around 30 cases being reported in the literature so far. The current report presents an extremely rare case of pancreatic EGIST encountered in a 53-year-old woman with no remarkable personal or family medical history. Surgical resection of the pancreatic head tumor through pancreaticoduodenectomy using Whipple procedure combined with negative resection margins and adjuvant Imatinib mesylate treatment led to a favorable postoperative evolution. The follow-up at six months after surgery did not reveal any malignant changes.

This review of the literature aims to describe the main advantages and disadvantages of the trauma systems in Europe. Moreover, the purpose of this article is to present the last concepts regarding the management of the polytrauma patients and the newest sets of measures to prevent car crashes in European Union. The articles published regarding the management of the polytrauma patient and trauma systems were identified using PubMed search. Optimal management of major polytrauma requires a national trauma system which should detail every level of organization from the trauma centers to the every member of the trauma team. European trauma systems varies a lot depending on the country and the specialized trauma surgery training programs are more advanced in countries with complex trauma systems. Introducing road safety performance indicators for trauma management decreased the rate of deaths by car crashes in Europe.

In this study, we discuss the differences in the total precipitable water (TPW), retrieved from a Cimel sunphotometer operating at a continental site in South-East Europe, between the Version 3 (V3) and Version 2 (V2) of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) algorithms. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the two algorithms comparing their product with the TPW obtained from a collocated microwave radiometer and nearby radiosondes during the period 2007–2017. The TPW from all three instruments was highly correlated, showing the same annual cycle, with lower values during winter and higher during summer. The Sun-photometer and the microwave radiometer depicts the same daily cycle, with some discrepancies during early morning and late afternoon due to the effect of solar zenith angle on the measurements of the photometer. The TPW from the (V3) of the AERONET algorithm has small differences compared with (V2), mostly related to the use of the new laboratory-based temperature coefficients used in V3. The microwave radiometer shows very good performance compared to the radiosondes, especially during nighttime when the differences between the two instruments are almost negligible. The comparison of the sun-photometer data with high-quality independent measurements from radiosondes and radiometer shows that the absolute differences between V3 and the other two datasets are slightly higher compared with V2. However, V3 has a lower dependence from the TPW and the internal sensor temperature, indicating a better performance of the retrieving algorithm. To our knowledge, this is the first in-depth analysis of the V3 TPW and although the findings presented here are for a specific site, we believe that they are representative of other mid-latitude continental stations.

Cholangiocarcinoma is an extremely rare and highly aggressive primary malignancy of the biliary tract. The current report illustrates a rare case of distal common bile duct adenocarcinoma encountered in a 65-year-old male patient who was thoroughly investigated after presenting with a two weeks history of pain in the right hypochondrium, jaundice and unintentional weight loss (6 kg in two weeks). The medical team opted for a pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) managing to obtain negative resection margins of the tumor with a favorable immediate postoperative evolution. However, the surgical team was forced to reintervene twice due to complications caused mainly by the patient's disregard.
