Abstract

We present the results of a brainstorming exercise focused on how situated visualizations could be used to better understand the state of the environment and our personal behavioral impact on it. Specifically, we conducted a day long workshop in the French city of Bordeaux where we envisioned situated visualizations of urban environmental footprints. We explored the city and took photos and notes about possible situated visualizations of environmental footprints that could be embedded near places, people, or objects of interest. We found that our designs targeted four purposes and used four different methods that could be further explored to test situated visualizations for the protection of the environment.

Abstract

Studies on human decision-making focused on humanitarian aid have found that cognitive biases can hinder the fair allocation of resources. However, few HCI and Information Visualization studies have explored ways to overcome those cognitive biases. This work investigates whether the design of interactive resource allocation tools can help to promote allocation fairness. We specifically study the effect of presentation format (using text or visualization) and a specific framing strategy (showing resources allocated to groups or individuals). In our three crowdsourced experiments, we provided different tool designs to split money between two fictional programs that benefit two distinct communities. Our main finding indicates that individual-framed visualizations and text may be able to curb unfair allocations caused by group-framed designs. This work opens new perspectives that can motivate research on how interactive tools and visualizations can be engineered to combat cognitive biases that lead to inequitable decisions., Comment: Published as a conference paper at CHI 2023

Abstract

"Cultural Windows" is a research initiative designed to enrich cross-cultural understanding through immersive extended reality (XR) experiences. This project proposes a workflow for deploying AR and VR platforms, allowing users to explore living spaces from diverse cultures and socio-economic statuses. The process involves 3D scanning of culturally significant objects, creating accurate models of living spaces, and integrating them into immersive systems to facilitate engagement with global living designs. Targeted at individuals curious about how people live in different parts of the world, the project aims to expand cross-cultural understanding and design perspectives, providing insights into the effectiveness of immersive technologies in cultural education. By detailing its conceptual framework, "Cultural Windows" aims to enhance comprehension and appreciation of global domestic aesthetics by comparing participants' perceptions with immersive, realistic representations of living spaces from different cultures. This can help bridge the gap between preconceived notions and the actual appearance and feel of these spaces.

4. Decoupling Judgment and Decision Making: A Tale of Two Tails

Abstract

Is it true that if citizens understand hurricane probabilities, they will make more rational decisions for evacuation? Finding answers to such questions is not straightforward in the literature because the terms judgment and decision making are often used interchangeably. This terminology conflation leads to a lack of clarity on whether people make suboptimal decisions because of inaccurate judgments of information conveyed in visualizations or because they use alternative yet currently unknown heuristics. To decouple judgment from decision making, we review relevant concepts from the literature and present two preregistered experiments (N=601) to investigate if the task (judgment vs. decision making), the scenario (sports vs. humanitarian), and the visualization (quantile dotplots, density plots, probability bars) affect accuracy. While experiment 1 was inconclusive, we found evidence for a difference in experiment 2. Contrary to our expectations and previous research, which found decisions less accurate than their direct-equivalent judgments, our results pointed in the opposite direction. Our findings further revealed that decisions were less vulnerable to status-quo bias, suggesting decision makers may disfavor responses associated with inaction. We also found that both scenario and visualization types can influence peoples judgments and decisions. Although effect sizes are not large and results should be interpreted carefully, we conclude that judgments cannot be safely used as proxy tasks for decision making, and discuss implications for visualization research and beyond.

Abstract

This paper introduces immersive humanitarian visualization as a promising research area in information visualization. Humanitarian visualizations are data visualizations designed to promote human welfare. This paper explains why immersive display technologies taken broadly (e.g, virtual reality, augmented reality, ambient displays and physical representations) open up a range of opportunities for humanitarian visualization. In particular, immersive displays offer ways to make remote and hidden human suffering more salient. They also offer ways to communicate quantitative facts together with qualitative information and visceral experiences, in order to provide a holistic understanding of humanitarian issues that could support more informed humanitarian decisions. But despite some promising preliminary work, immersive humanitarian visualization has not taken off as a research topic yet. Abstract

We explore how the lens of fictional superpowers can help characterize how visualizations empower people and provide inspiration for new visualization systems. Researchers and practitioners often tout visualizations' ability to "make the invisible visible" and to "enhance cognitive abilities." Meanwhile superhero comics and other modern fiction often depict characters with similarly fantastic abilities that allow them to see and interpret the world in ways that transcend traditional human perception. We investigate the intersection of these domains, and show how the language of superpowers can be used to characterize existing visualization systems and suggest opportunities for new and empowering ones. We introduce two frameworks: The first characterizes seven underlying mechanisms that form the basis for a variety of visual superpowers portrayed in fiction. The second identifies seven ways in which visualization tools and interfaces can instill a sense of empowerment in the people who use them. Building on these observations, we illustrate a diverse set of "visualization superpowers" and highlight opportunities for the visualization community to create new systems and interactions that empower new experiences with data., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

The availability heuristic is a strategy that people use to make quick decisions but often lead to systematic errors. We propose three ways that visualization could facilitate unbiased decision-making. First, visualizations can alter the way our memory stores the events for later recall, so as to improve users' long-term intuitions. Second, the known biases could lead to new visualization guidelines. Abstract

International audience; Running long-term field studies is a valuable yet slow and costly approach to test the efficacy of interaction designs on people's everyday decision making and behavior. In this position paper we describe the rationale behind an interdisciplinary approach to designing and evaluating data-driven interactive experiences for sustainable decision-making. We are a group consisting of HCI and visualization researchers, energy-economy modeling experts who work on mitigation pathways, and behavioral economists who run controlled experiments to study how people make decisions in an incentivized context. The intent of this collaboration is twofold: (1) we study how to design efficient data-driven experiences to help people build an intuition concerning the sustainability of daily choices and actions; (2) we explore the mutual benefit of working across disciplinary boundaries to go beyond the limits of our respective methodological toolboxes. We illustrate our approach through an example of a work-in-progress.

18. Handling Non-Visible Referents in Situated Visualizations

Abstract

Situated visualizations are a type of visualization where data is presented next to its physical referent (i.e., the physical object, space, or person it refers to), often using augmented-reality displays. While situated visualizations can be beneficial in various contexts and have received research attention, they are typically designed with the assumption that the physical referent is visible. However, in practice, a physical referent may be obscured by another object, such as a wall, or may be outside the user's visual field. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework and a design space to help researchers and user interface designers handle non-visible referents in situated visualizations. We first provide an overview of techniques proposed in the past for dealing with non-visible objects in the areas of 3D user interfaces, 3D visualization, and mixed reality. From this overview, we derive a design space that applies to situated visualizations and employ it to examine various trade-offs, challenges, and opportunities for future research in this area.

Abstract

The negative impact humans have on the environment is partly caused by thoughtless consumption leading to unnecessary waste. A likely contributing factor is the relative invisibility of waste: waste produced by individuals is either out of their sight or quickly taken away. Nevertheless, waste disposal systems sometimes break down, creating natural information displays of waste production that can have educational value. We take inspiration from such natural displays and introduce a class of situated visualizations we call augmented-reality waste accumulation visualizations or ARwavs, which are literal representations of waste data embedded in users' familiar environment. We implemented examples of ARwavs and demonstrated them in feedback sessions with experts in pro-environmental behavior, and during a large tech exhibition event. We discuss general design principles and trade-offs for ARwavs. Finally, we conducted a study suggesting that ARwavs yield stronger emotional responses than non-immersive waste accumulation visualizations and plain numbers.

Abstract

International audience; Physical data visualizations tap into our lifelong experience of perceiving and manipulating the physical world, either alone or with other people. However, most physical visualizations are either monolithic and static, or require human intervention to be rearranged. We drew inspiration from existing physical interactive systems and data storytelling practices with physical tokens (like those of the influential Swedish professor Hans Rosling) to develop Zooids, tiny wheeled robots that can move rapidly on any horizontal surface. We used Zooids to explore physical data visualizations that can (1) be manipulated by humans, and (2) update themselves through computerized mechanisms.

Abstract

International audience; Traditionally, data visualisation has mostly focused on finding visual encodings most suitable for two-dimensional displays and static visual examination tasks. With the emergence of Immersive Analytics, researchers explored the use of physical navigation in 3D spaces and more embodied techniques to interact with data. Yet the sense-making process to explore them has remained more or less the same to the one used on 2D screens. In this paper, we propose to take advantages of immersive technology to propose a more subjective experience of data. We present Ride Your Data (RYD), an immersive experience in which people ride a virtual roller coasters whose shape is dictated by data, allowing them to literally ride on their data, with climbs and drops corresponding to increases and decreases in data values. After presenting the design of RYD, we present and discuss three examples of virtual roller coasters made from real datasets. We then discuss research challenges behind the design of such experiences, and more generally, data-driven immersive experiences.

Abstract

This is a replication of Experiment 1 (https://osf.io/t82nq) with subtle changes to the experiment instructions that clarify further the nature of the tasks and decrease experiment duration. We also changed the numerical values of the trials from fixed across trials to variate across trials to increase the difficulty of the task.

Abstract

International audience; We present the results of a brainstorming exercise focused on how situated visualizations could be used to better understand the state of the environment and our personal behavioral impact on it. Specifically, we conducted a day long workshop in the French city of Bordeaux where we envisioned situated visualizations of urban environmental footprints. We explored the city and took photos and notes about possible situated visualizations of environmental footprints that could be embedded near places, people, or objects of interest. We found that our designs targeted four purposes and used four different methods that could be further explored to test situated visualizations for the protection of the environment.

Abstract

Researchers tend to use the terms “judgment” and “decision making” interchangeably. This conflation of terminology leads to a lack of clarity on whether data visualization users make suboptimal decisions because they perform inaccurate judgments of probabilities, or because they use alternative yet currently unknown heuristics. We present an experiment in which participants were exposed to data visualizations and responded to questions involving probability and cost-benefit estimations. The goal is to understand how the task (i.e., judgment vs. decision making), the underline scenario (i.e., sports vs. humanitarian) as well as the type of visualization (i.e., quantile plots, densities, or probability bars) affect response accuracy.

40. Edo: A Participatory Data Physicalization on the Climate Impact of Dietary Choices

Abstract

A participatory data physicalization, or PDP, is a physical visualization that allows people to physically participate in the creation of the visualization, by directly encoding their data. PDPs offer a way to engage a community with data of personal relevance that otherwise would be intangible. However, their design space has only begun to be explored, and most prior work shows relatively simple encoding rules. Therefore, we present a design exploration of different ways of faceting contributed data: by week, day, or person. Specifically, we designed Edo, a PDP that allows a small community to contribute their data to a physical visualization showing the climate impact of their dietary choices. In this pictorial, we elaborate on the design process of Edo and reflect on the findings of a three-week deployment of different layouts of Edo. Effective altruism is a movement whose goal it to use evidence and reason to figure out how to benefit others as much as possible. This movement is becoming influential, but effective altruists still lack tools to help them understand complex humanitarian trade-offs and make good decisions based on data. Visualization-the study of computer-supported, visual representations of data meant to support understanding, communication, and decision makingcan help alleviate this issue. Conversely, effective altruism provides a powerful thinking framework for visualization research that focuses on humanitarian applications.

50. Publishing Visualization Studies as Registered Reports: Expected Benefits and Researchers’ Attitudes

Abstract

Background: Registered Reports are publications in which study proposals are peer reviewed and pre-accepted before the study is ran. Their adoption in other disciplines has been found to promote research quality and save time and resources. Objectives: We offer a brief introduction to Registered Reports and their expected benefits for visualization research. We then report a survey of the visualization community on their attitudes towards Registered Reports. This survey takes the form of a quasi Registered Report, the first one presented at a visualization venue as far as we know. Method: We will run an online survey that will be open from the end of August until the day of the alt.VIS workshop. Results: Most respondents expressed interest in Registered Reports as an additional submission format. Junior researchers as well as researchers with prior experience of preregistration tended to be more inclined to adopt this format. However, qualitative feedback highlights several perceived drawbacks and worries about Registered Reports, such as low suitability for some types of research, and increased workload for reviewers and authors. Conclusion: While many respondents expressed interest in (and sometimes enthusiasm for) Registered Reports, many also voiced concerns that should be considered and discussed in the community.
