We present a variety of analyses of the turbulent dynamics of the boundary of a photo-dissociation region (PDR) in the Carina Nebula using high resolution ALMA observations. Using Principal Component Analysis we suggest that the turbulence in this molecular cloud is driven at large scales. Analysis of the centroid velocity structure functions indicate that the turbulence is dominated by shocks rather than local (in k-space) transport of energy. We further find that length-scales in the range 0.02 - 0.03 pc are important in the dynamics of this cloud and this finding is supported by analysis of the dominant emission structure length-scale. These length-scales are well resolved by the observational data and we conclude that the apparent importance of this range of scales is physical in origin. Given that it is also well within the range strongly influenced by ambipolar diffusion, we conclude that it is not primarily a product of turbulence alone, but is more likely to be a result of the interplay between gravity and turbulence. Finally, through comparison of these results with previous observations of H2 emission from the Western Wall we demonstrate that observations of a PDR can be used to probe the internal structure of the undisturbed portion of a molecular cloud., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. We present ALMA observations of the continuum and line emission of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and [C I] for a portion of the G287.38-0.62 (Car 1-E) region in the Carina star-forming complex. The new data record how a molecular cloud responds on subarcsecond scales when subjected to a powerful radiation front, and provide insights into the overall process of star formation within regions that contain the most massive young stars. The maps show several molecular clouds superpose upon the line of sight, including a portion of the Western Wall, a highly-irradiated cloud situated near the young star cluster Trumpler 14. In agreement with theory, there is a clear progression from fluoresced H$_2$, to [C I], to C$^{18}$O with distance into the PDR front. Emission from optically thick $^{12}$CO extends across the region, while $^{13}$CO, [C I] and especially C$^{18}$O are more optically thin, and concentrate into clumps and filaments closer to the PDR interface. Within the Western Wall cloud itself we identify 254 distinct core-sized clumps in our datacube of C$^{18}$O. The mass distribution of these objects is similar to that of the stellar IMF. Aside from a large-scale velocity gradient, the clump radial velocities lack any spatial coherence size. There is no direct evidence for triggering of star formation in the Western Wall in that its C$^{18}$O clumps and continuum cores appear starless, with no pillars present. Identifying stars formed in pristine environments (Pop III) within the first billion years is vital to uncovering the earliest growth and chemical evolution of galaxies. Pop III galaxies, however, are typically expected to be too faint and too few in number to be detectable by forthcoming instruments without extremely long integration times and/or extreme lensing. In an environment, however, where star formation is suppressed until a halo crosses the atomic cooling limit (e.g., by a modest Lyman-Werner flux, high baryonic streaming velocities, and/or dynamical heating effects),primordial halos can form substantially more numerous and more massive stars. Some of these stars will in-turn be accreting more rapidly than they can thermally relax at any given time. Using high resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of massive star formation in high-z halos, we find that such rapidly accreting stars produce prominent spectral features which would be detectable by {\it JWST}. The rapid accretion episodes within the halo lead to stochastic reprocessing of 0--20\% of the total stellar emission into the rest-frame optical over long timescales, a unique signature which may allow deep observations to identify such objects out to $z \sim 10-13$ using mid- and wide-band NIRCam colors alone., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Astrophysical Journal Letters accepted

We investigate the ab-initio formation of super-massive stars in a pristine atomic cooling halo. The halo is extracted from a larger self-consistent parent simulation. The halo remains metal-free and star formation is suppressed due to a combination of dynamical heating from mergers and a mild ($J_{\rm LW} \sim 2 - 10 \ J_{21}$(z)) Lyman-Werner (LW) background. We find that more than 20 very massive stars form with stellar masses greater than 1000 M$_{\odot}$. The most massive star has a stellar mass of over 6000 M$_{\odot}$. However, accretion onto all stars declines significantly after the first $\sim$ 100 kyr of evolution as the surrounding material is accreted and the turbulent nature of the gas causes the stars to move to lower density regions. We post-process the impact of ionising radiation from the stars and find that ionising radiation is not a limiting factor when considering SMS formation and growth. Rather the birth environments are highly turbulent and a steady accretion flow is not maintained within the timescale (2 Myr) of our simulations. As the massive stars end their lives as direct collapse black holes this will seed these embryonic haloes with a population of black holes with masses between approximately 300 M$_{\odot}$ and 10,000 M$_{\odot}$. Afterwards they may sink to the centre of the haloes, eventually coalescing to form larger intermediate mass black holes whose in-situ mergers will be detectable by LISA., Comment: 13 pages. We present the first wide-field near-infrared adaptive optics images of Carina's Western Wall (G287.38-0.62), one of the brightest and most well-defined irradiated interfaces known in a region of massive star formation. The new narrowband H$_2$ 2.12$\mu$m, Br-$\gamma$ and K-continuum images trace the photoevaporative flow from the cloud and identify locations where UV-radiation from the surrounding massive stars excites molecular hydrogen to fluoresce. With a field of view of $\sim$ 1.5' $\times$ 2.9' and spatial resolution between 60 $-$ 110 mas, the new images show a spectacular level of detail over a large area, and presage what JWST should achieve. The Wall is convex in shape, with a large triangular-shaped extension near its apex. The interface near the apex consists of 3 $-$ 4 regularly-spaced ridges with projected spacings of $\sim$ 2000 AU, suggestive of a large-scale dynamically-important magnetic field. The northern edge of the Wall breaks into several swept-back fragments of width $\sim$ 1800 AU that resemble Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, and the southern part of the Wall also shows complex morphologies including a sinusoidal-like variation with a half-wavelength of 2500 AU. Though the dissociation front must increase the density along the surface of the Wall, it does not resolve into pillars that point back to the ionization sources, as could occur if the front triggered new stars to form. We discovered that MHO 1630, an H$_2$ outflow with no clear driving source in the northern portion of the Wall, consists of a series of bow shocks arrayed in a line., Comment: Accepted in Astrophysical Journal Letters

The origin of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that inhabit the centers of massive galaxies is largely unconstrained. Remnants from supermassive stars (SMSs) with masses around 10,000 solar masses provide the ideal seed candidates, known as direct collapse black holes. However, their very existence and formation environment in the early Universe are still under debate, with their supposed rarity further exacerbating the problem of modeling their ab-initio formation. SMS models have shown that rapid collapse, with an infall rate above a critical value, in metal-free haloes is a requirement for the formation of a proto-stellar core which will then form an SMS. Using a radiation hydrodynamics simulation of early galaxy formation, we show the natural emergence of metal-free haloes both massive enough, and with sufficiently high infall rates, to form an SMS. We find that haloes that are exposed to both a Lyman-Werner intensity of J_LW ~ 3 J_21 and that undergo at least one period of rapid growth early in their evolution are ideal cradles for SMS formation. This rapid growth induces substantial dynamical heating, amplifying the existing Lyman-Werner suppression originating from a group of young galaxies 20 kiloparsecs away. Our results strongly indicate that structure formation dynamics, rather than a critical Lyman-Werner (LW) flux, may be the main driver of massive black hole formation in the early Universe. Super-Eddington accretion onto massive black hole seeds may be commonplace in the early Universe, where the conditions exist for rapid accretion. Direct collapse black holes are often invoked as a possible solution to the observation of super massive black holes (SMBHs) in the pre-reionisation Universe. We investigate here how feedback, mainly in the form of bipolar jets, from super-Eddington accreting seed black holes will affect their subsequent growth. We find that, nearly independent of the mass loading of the bipolar jets, the violent outflows generated by the jets evacuate a region of approximately 0.1 pc surrounding the black hole seed. However, the jet outflows are unable to break free of the halo and their impact is limited to the immediate vicinity of the black hole. The outflows suppress any accretion for approximately a dynamical time. The gas then cools, recombines and falls back to the centre where high accretion rates are again observed. The overall effect is to create an effective accretion rate with values of between 0.1 and 0.5 times the Eddington rate. If this episodic accretion rate is maintained for order 500 million years then the black hole will increase in mass by a factor of between 3 and 300 but far short of the factor of $10^4$ required for the seeds to become the SMBHs observed at $z>6$. Therefore, direct collapse black holes born into atomic cooling haloes and which experience strong negative mechanical feedback will require external influences (e.g. rapid major mergers with other haloes) to promote efficient accretion and reach SMBH masses within a few hundred million years., Comment: 16 pages. Imaging of the dust continuum emitted from disks around nearby protostars reveals diverse substructure. In recent years, theoretical efforts have been intensified to investigate how far the intrinsic dynamics of protoplanetary disks (PPDs) can lead to such features. Turbulence in the realm of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is one candidate for explaining the generation of zonal flows which can lead to local dust enhancements. Adopting a radially varying cylindrical disk model, and considering combinations of vertical and azimuthal initial net flux, we perform 3D non-ideal MHD simulations aimed at studying self-organization induced by the Hall effect in turbulent PPDs. To this end, new modules have been incorporated into the NIRVANA-III and FARGO3D MHD codes. We moreover include dust grains, treated in the fluid approximation, in order to study their evolution subject to the emerging zonal flows. In the regime of a dominant Hall effect, we robustly obtain large-scale organized concentrations in the vertical magnetic field that remain stable for hundreds of orbits. For disks with vertical initial net flux alone, we confirm the presence of zonal flows and vortices that introduce regions of super-Keplerian gas flow. Including a moderately strong net-azimuthal magnetic flux can significantly alter the dynamics, partially preventing the self-organization of zonal flows. For plasma beta-parameters smaller than 50, large-scale, near-axisymmetric structures develop in the vertical magnetic flux. In all cases, we demonstrate that the emerging features are capable of accumulating dust grains for a range of Stokes numbers., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. This paper presents the effect of self-consistent plasma backgrounds including plasma-neutral interactions, on the dynamics of filament propagation. The principle focus is on the influence of the neutrals on the filament through both direct interactions and through their influence on the plasma background. Both direct and indirect interactions influence the motion of filaments. A monotonic increase of filament peak velocity with upstream electron temperature is observed, while a decrease with increasing electron density is observed. If ordered by the target temperature, the density dependence disappears and the filament velocity is only a function of the target temperature. Smaller filaments keep a density dependence, as a result of the density dependence of the plasma viscosity. The critical size $\delta^*$, where filaments are fastest, is shifted to larger sizes for higher densities, due to the plasma viscosity. If the density dependence of the plasma viscosity is removed, $\delta^*$ has no temperature dependence, but rather a density dependence.

The formation of stellar mass black holes from the remnants of Population III stars provides a source of initial black hole seeds with the potential to grow into intermediate or, in rare cases, possibly supermassive black holes. We use the Renaissance simulation suite to follow the growth of over 15,000 black holes born into mini-haloes in the early Universe. We compute the evolution of the black holes by post-processing individual remnant Population III star particles in the Renaissance simulation snapshots. The black holes populate haloes from 10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$ up to 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$. We find that all of the black holes display very inefficient growth. On average the black holes increase their initial mass by a factor 10$^{-5}$, with the most active black holes increasing their mass by approximately 10%. Only a single black hole experiences any period of super-Eddington accretion, but the duration is very short and not repeated. Furthermore, we find no correlation of black hole accretion with halo mass in the mass range sampled. Within most haloes, we identify clumps of cool, dense gas for which accretion rates would be high, but instances of black holes encountering these clumps are rare and short-lived. Star formation competes with black hole growth by consuming available gas and driving down accretion rates through feedback. We conclude that the black holes born from Population III remnants do not form a significant population of intermediate mass black holes in the early Universe and will need to wait until later times to undergo significant accretion, if at all., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use high resolution adaptive mesh refinement simulations to model the formation of massive metal-free stars in the early Universe. By applying Lyman-Werner (LW) backgrounds of 100 J$_{21}$ and 1000 J$_{21}$ respectively we construct environments conducive to the formation of massive stars. We find that only in the case of the higher LW backgrounds are super-critical accretion rates realised that are necessary for super-massive star (SMS) formation. Mild fragmentation is observed for both backgrounds. Violent dynamical interactions between the stars that form in the more massive halo formed (1000 J$_{21}$ background) results in the eventual expulsion of the two most massive stars from the halo. In the smaller mass halo (100 J$_{21}$ background) mergers of stars occur before any multibody interactions and a single massive Pop III star is left at the centre of the halo at the end of our simulation. Feedback from the very massive Pop III stars is not effective in generating a large HII region with ionising photons absorbed within a few thousand AU of the star. In all cases a massive black hole seed is the expected final fate of the most massive objects. The seed of the massive Pop III star which remained at the centre of the less massive halo experiences steady accretion rates of almost $10^{-2}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr and if these rates continue could potentially experience super-Eddington accretion rates in the immediate aftermath of collapsing into a black hole., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Supermassive stars born in pristine environments in the early Universe hold the promise of being the seeds for the supermassive black holes observed as high redshift quasars shortly after the epoch of reionisation. H$_2$ suppression is thought to be crucial in order to negate normal Population III star formation and allow high accretion rates to drive the formation of supermassive stars. Only in the cases where vigorous fragmentation is avoided will a monolithic collapse be successful giving rise to a single massive central object. We investigate the number of fragmentation sites formed in collapsing atomic cooling haloes subject to various levels of background Lyman-Werner flux. The background Lyman-Werner flux manipulates the chemical properties of the gas in the collapsing halo by destroying H$_2$. We find that only when the collapsing gas cloud shifts from the molecular to the atomic cooling regime is the degree of fragmentation suppressed. In our particular case we find that this occurs above a critical Lyman-Werner background of J $\sim 10$ J$_{21}$. The important criterion being the transition to the atomic cooling regime rather than the actual value of J, which will vary locally. Once the temperature of the gas exceeds T $\gtrsim$ 10$^4$ K and the gas transitions to atomic line cooling, then vigorous fragmentation is strongly suppressed., Comment: 10 pages (+ 3 appendix). Partially ionized plasmas are found across the Universe in many different astrophysical environments. They constitute an essential ingredient of the solar atmosphere, molecular clouds, planetary ionospheres and protoplanetary disks, among other environments, and display a richness of physical effects which are not present in fully ionized plasmas. This review provides an overview of the physics of partially ionized plasmas, including recent advances in different astrophysical areas in which partial ionization plays a fundamental role. We investigate the ionising effect of low energy cosmic rays (CRs) from a young star on its protoplanetary disk (PPD). We consider specifically the effect of $\sim3\,$GeV protons injected at the inner edge of the PPD. An increase in the ionisation fraction as a result of these CRs could allow the magnetorotational instability to operate in otherwise magnetically dead regions of the disk. For the typical values assumed we find an ionisation rate of $\zeta_\mathrm{CR} \sim 10^{-17}\mathrm{s^{-1}}$ at $1\,$au. The transport equation is solved by treating the propagation of the CRs as diffusive. We find for increasing diffusion coefficients the CRs penetrate further in the PPD, while varying the mass density profile of the disk is found to have little effect. We investigate the effect of an energy spectrum of CRs. The influence of a disk wind is examined by including an advective term. For advective wind speeds between $1-100\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$ diffusion dominates at all radii considered here (out to 10$\,$au) for reasonable diffusion coefficients. Overall, we find that low energy CRs can significantly ionise the midplane of PPDs out to $\sim\,1\,$au. By increasing the luminosity or energy of the CRs, within plausible limits, their radial influence could increase to $\sim2\,$au at the midplane but it remains challenging to significantly ionise the midplane further out., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A near pristine atomic cooling halo close to a star forming galaxy offers a natural pathway for forming massive direct collapse black hole (DCBH) seeds which could be the progenitors of the $z>6$ redshift quasars. The close proximity of the haloes enables a sufficient Lyman-Werner flux to effectively dissociate H$_2$ in the core of the atomic cooling halo. A mild background may also be required to delay star formation in the atomic cooling halo, often attributed to distant background galaxies. In this letter we investigate the impact of metal enrichment from both the background galaxies and the close star forming galaxy under extremely unfavourable conditions such as instantaneous metal mixing. We find that within the time window of DCBH formation, the level of enrichment never exceeds the critical threshold (Z$_{cr} \sim 1 \times 10^{-5} \ \rm Z_{\odot})$, and attains a maximum metallicity of Z $\sim 2 \times 10^{-6} \ \rm Z_{\odot}$. The redistribution of angular momentum is a long standing problem in our understanding of protoplanetary disk (PPD) evolution. The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is considered a likely mechanism. We present the results of a study involving multifluid global simulations including Ohmic dissipation, ambipolar diffusion and the Hall effect in a dynamic, self-consistent way. We focus on the turbulence resulting from the non-linear development of the MRI in radially stratified PPDs and compare with ideal MHD simulations. In the multifluid simulations the disk is initially set up to transition from a weak Hall dominated regime, where the Hall effect is the dominant non-ideal effect but approximately the same as or weaker than the inductive term, to a strong Hall dominated regime, where the Hall effect dominates the inductive term. As the simulations progress a substantial portion of the disk develops into a weak Hall dominated disk. We find a transition from turbulent to laminar flow in the inner regions of the disk, but without any corresponding overall density feature. We introduce a dimensionless parameter, $\alpha_\mathrm{RM}$, to characterise accretion with $\alpha_\mathrm{RM} \gtrsim 0.1$ corresponding to turbulent transport. We calculate the eddy turnover time, $t_\mathrm{eddy}$, and compared this with an effective recombination timescale, $t_\mathrm{rcb}$, to determine whether the presence of turbulence necessitates non-equilibrium ionisation calculations. We find that $t_\mathrm{rcb}$ is typically around three orders of magnitude smaller than $t_\mathrm{eddy}$. Also, the ionisation fraction does not vary appreciably. Turbulent motion driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is believed to provide an anomalous viscosity strong enough to account for observed accretion rates in protostellar accretion disks. In the first of two papers, we perform large-scale, three fluid simulations of a weakly ionised accretion disk and examine the linear and non-linear development of the MRI in the net-flux and zero net-flux cases. This numerical study is carried out using the multifluid MHD code HYDRA. We examine the role of non-ideal effects, including ambipolar diffusion, the Hall effect, and parallel resistivity, on the non-linear evolution of the MRI in weakly ionised protostellar disks in the region where the Hall effect is believed to dominate. We find that angular momentum transport, parametrised by the alpha parameter, is enhanced by inclusion of non-ideal effects in the parameter space of the disk model. The case where the angular momentum and magnetic field are anti-parallel is explored and the Hall effect is shown to have a stabilizing influence on the disk in this case., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures. Observations of non-thermal emission from several supernova remnants suggest that magnetic fields close to the blastwave are much stronger than would be naively expected from simple shock compression of the field permeating the interstellar medium (ISM). We present a simple model which is capable of achieving sufficient magnetic field amplification to explain the observations. We propose that the cosmic-ray pressure gradient acting on the inhomogeneous ISM upstream of the supernova blastwave induces strong turbulence upstream of the supernova blastwave. The turbulence is generated through the differential acceleration of the upstream ISM which occurs as a result of density inhomogeneities in the ISM. This turbulence then amplifies the pre-existing magnetic field. Numerical simulations are presented which demonstrate that amplification factors of 20 or more are easily achievable by this mechanism when reasonable parameters for the ISM and supernova blastwave are assumed. We present a new approach to calculate the particle distribution function about relativistic shocks including synchrotron losses using the method of lines with an explicit finite difference scheme. A steady, continuous, one dimensional plasma flow is considered to model thick (modified) shocks, leading to a calculation in three dimensions plus time, the former three being momentum, pitch angle and position. The method accurately reproduces the expected power law behaviour in momentum at the shock for upstream flow speeds ranging from 0.1c to 0.995c (1 < \Gamma < 10). It also reproduces approximate analytical results for the synchrotron cutoff shape for a non-relativistic shock, demonstrating that the loss process is accurately represented. The algorithm has been implemented as a hybrid OpenMP--MPI parallel algorithm to make efficient use of SMP cluster architectures and scales well up to many hundreds of CPUs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Initial results from simulations of 4-fluid MHD turbulence in molecular clouds are presented. The species included in the simulations are ions, electrons, negatively charged dust grains and neutrals. The results indicate that, on length scales of a few tenths of a parsec, multifluid effects have a significant impact on the properties of the turbulence. In particular, the power spectra of the velocity and magnetic fields are significantly softened, while the PDF of the densities of the charged and neutral fluids are appreciably different. Indeed, the magnetic field strength displays much less spatial structure on all lengthscales up to 1 pc than in the ideal MHD case. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is well known to be capable of converting well-ordered flows into more disordered, even turbulent, flows. As such it could represent a path by which the energy in, for example, bowshocks from stellar jets could be converted into turbulent energy thereby driving molecular cloud turbulence. We present the results of a suite of fully multifluid magnetohydrodynamic simulations of this instability using the HYDRA code. We investigate the behaviour of the instability in a Hall dominated and an ambipolar diffusion dominated plasma as might be expected in certain regions of accretion disks and molecular clouds respectively. We find that, while the linear growth rates of the instability are unaffected by multifluid effects, the non-linear behaviour is remarkably different with ambipolar diffusion removing large quantities of magnetic energy while the Hall effect, if strong enough, introduces a dynamo effect which leads to continuing strong growth of the magnetic field well into the non-linear regime and a lack of true saturation of the instability., Comment: 12 pages, 20 figures. It is generally believed that turbulence has a significant impact on the dynamics and evolution of molecular clouds and the star formation which occurs within them. Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic effects are known to influence the nature of this turbulence. We present the results of a suite of 512-cubed resolution simulations of the decay of initially super-Alfvenic and supersonic fully multifluid MHD turbulence. We find that ambipolar diffusion increases the rate of decay of the turbulence while the Hall effect has virtually no impact. The decay of the kinetic energy can be fitted as a power-law in time and the exponent is found to be -1.34 for fully multifluid MHD turbulence. The power spectra of density, velocity and magnetic field are all steepened significantly by the inclusion of non-ideal terms. The dominant reason for this steepening is ambipolar diffusion with the Hall effect again playing a minimal role except at short length scales where it creates extra structure in the magnetic field. Interestingly we find that, at least at these resolutions, the majority of the physics of multifluid turbulence can be captured by simply introducing fixed (in time and space) resistive terms into the induction equation without the need for a full multifluid MHD treatment. We investigate the linear theory of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the interface between a partially ionized dusty outflow and the ambient material analytically. We model the interaction as a multifluid system in a planar geometry. The unstable modes are independent from the charge polarity of the dust particles. Although our results show a stabilizing effect for charged dust particles, the growth time scale of the growing modes gradually becomes independent of the mass or charge of the dust particles when the magnetic field strength increases. We show that growth time scale decreases with increasing the magnetic field. Also, as the mass of the dust particles increases, the growth time scale of the unstable mode increases., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

We present a new code aimed at the simulation of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), and discuss various test cases which demonstrate its ability to study DSA in its full time-dependent and non-linear developments. We present the numerical methods implemented, coupling the hydrodynamical evolution of a parallel shock (in one space dimension) and the kinetic transport of the cosmic-rays (CR) distribution function (in one momentum dimension), as first done by Falle. Following Kang and Jones and collaborators, we show how the adaptive mesh refinement technique (AMR) greatly helps accommodating the extremely demanding numerical resolution requirements of realistic (Bohm-like) CR diffusion coefficients. We also present the paral lelization of the code, which allows us to run many successive shocks at the cost of a single shock, and thus to present the first direct numerical simulations of linear and non-linear multiple DSA, a mechanism of interest in various astrophysical environments such as superbubbles, galaxy clusters and early cosmological flows., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS by the Royal Astronomical Society and Blackwell Publishing

We study the linear theory of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a layer of ions and neutrals with finite thickness. In the short wavelength limit the thickness of the layer has a negligible effect on the growing modes. However, perturbations with wavelength comparable to layer's thickness are significantly affected by the thickness of the layer. We show that the thickness of the layer has a stabilizing effect on the two dominant growing modes. When modeling astrophysical fluid flows, it is often appropriate to discard the canonical magnetohydrodynamic approximation thereby freeing the magnetic field to diffuse with respect to the bulk velocity field. As a consequence, however, the induction equation can become problematic to solve via standard explicit techniques. In particular, the Hall diffusion term admits fast-moving whistler waves which can impose a vanishing timestep limit. Within an explicit differencing framework, a multifluid scheme for weakly ionised plasmas is presented which relies upon a new approach to integrating the induction equation efficiently. The first component of this approach is a relatively unknown method of accelerating the integration of parabolic systems by enforcing stability over large compound timesteps rather than over each of the constituent substeps. This method, Super Time Stepping, proves to be very effective in applying a part of the Hall term up to a known critical value. We report on multi-epoch HST/WFPC2 images of the XZ Tauri binary, and its outflow, covering the period from 1995 to 2001. Data from 1995 to 1998 have already been published in the literature. Additional images, from 1999, 2000 and 2001 are presented here. These reveal not only further dynamical and morphological evolution of the XZ Tauri outflow but also that the suspected outflow source, XZ Tauri North has flared in EXor-type fashion. In particular our proper motion studies suggests that the recently discovered bubble-like shock, driven by the the XZ Tauri outflow, is slowing down (its tangential velocity decreasing from 146km/s to 117km/s). We also present simulations of the outflow itself, with plausible ambient and outflow parameters, that appear to reproduce not only the dynamical evolution of the flow, but also its shape and emission line luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, Accepted by A&A

We present a model of a pulsar-driven supernova remnant, by using a hydrodynamics code, which simulates the evolution of a pulsar wind nebula when the pulsar is moving at a high velocity through its expanding supernova remnant. The simulation shows four different stages of the pulsar wind nebula: the supersonic expansion stage, the reverse shock interaction stage, the subsonic expansion stage and ultimately the bow shock stage. Due to the high velocity of the pulsar, the position of the pulsar is located at the head of the pulsar wind bubble, after the passage of the reverse shock. The resulting morphology of the pulsar wind bubble is therefore similar to the morphology of a bow shock pulsar wind nebula. We use numerical simulations to examine the mass-velocity and intensity-velocity relations in the CO J=2-1 and H$_2$ S(1)1-0 lines for jet-driven molecular outflows. Contrary to previous expectations, we find that the mass-velocity relation for the swept-up gas is a single power-law, with a shallow slope $\simeq -1.5$ and no break to a steeper slope at high velocities. An analytic bowshock model with no post-shock mixing is shown to reproduce this behaviour very well. We show that molecular dissociation and the temperature dependence of the line emissivity are both critical in defining the shape of the line profiles at velocities above $\sim$ 20 km s$^{-1}$. In particular, the simulated CO J=2-1 intensity-velocity relation does show a break in slope, even though the underlying mass distribution does not. These predicted CO profiles are found to compare remarkably well with observations of molecular outflows, both in terms of the slopes at low and high velocities and in terms of the range of break velocities at which the change in slope occurs. Shallower slopes are predicted at high velocity in higher excitation lines, such as H$_2$ S(1)1-0. This work indicates that, in jet-driven outflows, the CO J=2-1 intensity profile reflects the slope of the underlying mass-velocity distribution only at velocities $\le $ 20 km/s, and that higher temperature tracers are required to probe the mass distribution at higher speed., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures.
