1. Stellar Properties for a Comprehensive Collection of Star Forming Regions in the SDSS APOGEE-2 Survey

Abstract: The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) APOGEE-2 primary science goal was to observe red giant stars throughout the Galaxy to study its dynamics, morphology, and chemical evolution. The APOGEE instrument, a high-resolution 300 fiber H-band (1.55-1.71 micron) spectrograph, is also ideal to study other stellar populations in the Galaxy, among which are a number of star forming regions and young open clusters. We present the results of the determination of six stellar properties ($T_{eff}$, $\log{g}$, [Fe/H], $L/L_\odot$, $M/M_\odot$, and ages) for a sample that is composed of 3360 young stars, of sub-solar to super-solar types, in sixteen Galactic star formation and young open cluster regions. Those sources were selected by using a clustering method that removes most of the field contamination. Samples were also refined by removing targets affected by various systematic effects of the parameter determination. The final samples are presented in a comprehensive catalog that includes all six estimated parameters. This overview study also includes parameter spatial distribution maps for all regions and Hertzprung-Russell ($L/L_\odot$ vs. $T_{eff}$) diagrams. This study serves as a guide for detailed studies on individual regions, and paves the way for the future studies on the global properties of stars in the pre-main sequence phase of stellar evolution using more robust samples., Comment: 6 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: APOGEE-2 is a dual-hemisphere, near-infrared (NIR), spectroscopic survey with the goal of producing a chemo-dynamical mapping of the Milky Way Galaxy. The targeting for APOGEE-2 is complex and has evolved with time. In this paper, we present the updates and additions to the initial targeting strategy for APOGEE-2N presented in Zasowski et al. (2017). These modifications come in two implementation modes: (i) "Ancillary Science Programs" competitively awarded to SDSS-IV PIs through proposal calls in 2015 and 2017 for the pursuit of new scientific avenues outside the main survey, and (ii) an effective 1.5-year expansion of the survey, known as the Bright Time Extension, made possible through accrued efficiency gains over the first years of the APOGEE-2N project. For the 23 distinct ancillary programs, we provide descriptions of the scientific aims, target selection, and how to identify these targets within the APOGEE-2 sample. The Bright Time Extension permitted changes to the main survey strategy, the inclusion of new programs in response to scientific discoveries or to exploit major new datasets not available at the outset of the survey design, and expansions of existing programs to enhance their scientific success and reach. After describing the motivations, implementation, and assessment of these programs, we also leave a summary of lessons learned from nearly a decade of APOGEE-1 and APOGEE-2 survey operations. A companion paper, Santana et al. 4. Tidal and general relativistic effects in rocky planet formation at the substellar mass limit using N-body simulations

Abstract: Recent observational results show that very low mass stars and brown dwarfs are able to host close-in rocky planets. Low-mass stars are the most abundant stars in the Galaxy and the formation efficiency of their planetary systems is relevant in the computation of a global probability of finding Earth-like planets inside habitable zones. Tidal forces and relativistic effects are relevant in the latest dynamical evolution of planets around low-mass stars and their effect on the planetary formation efficiency still needs to be addressed. Our goal is to evaluate the impact of tidal forces and relativistic effects on the formation of rocky planets around a star close to the substellar mass limit, in terms of the resulting planetary architectures and its distribution according to the corresponding evolving habitable zone. Thus, we performed a set of $N$-body simulations spanning the first 100~Myr of the evolution of two systems composed respectively by 224 embryos with a total mass 0.25M$_\oplus$ and 74 embryos with a total mass 3 M$_\oplus$ around a central object of 0.08~M$_\odot$. For these two scenarios, we compared the planetary architectures that result from simulations that are purely gravitational with those from simulations that include the early contraction and spin-up of the central object, the distortions and dissipation tidal terms and general relativistic effects. We found that including these effects allows the formation and survival of a close-in population located in the habitable zone of the system. This means that both effects are relevant during the formation of rocky planets and their early evolution around stars close to the substellar mass limit, in particular when low-mass planetary embryos are involved., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures

5. System IMF of the 25 Ori Group from Planetary-Mass Objects to Intermediate/High-Mass Stars

Abstract: The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is an essential input for many astrophysical studies but only in a few cases it has been determined over the whole cluster mass range, limiting the conclusions about its nature. The 25 Orionis group (25 Ori) is an excellent laboratory to investigate the IMF across the entire mass range of the population, from planetary-mass objects to intermediate/high-mass stars. We combine new deep optical photometry with optical and near-infrared data from the literature to select 1687 member candidates covering a 1.1$^\circ$ radius area in 25 Ori. With this sample we derived the 25 Ori system IMF from 0.012 to 13.1 $M_\odot$. This system IMF is well described by a two-segment power-law with $\Gamma=-0.74\pm0.04$ for $m<0.4\ M_\odot$ and $\Gamma=1.50\pm0.11$ for $m\ge0.4\ M_\odot$. It is also well described over the whole mass range by a tapered power-law function with $\Gamma=1.10\pm0.09$, $m_p=0.31\pm0.03$ and $\beta=2.11\pm0.09$. The best lognormal representation of the system IMF has $m_c=0.31\pm0.04$ and $\sigma=0.46\pm0.05$ for $m<1\ M_\odot$. This system IMF does not present significant variations with the radii. We compared the resultant system IMF as well as the BD/star ratio of $0.16\pm0.03$ we estimated for 25 Ori with that of other stellar regions with diverse conditions and found no significant discrepancies. These results support the idea that general star formation mechanisms are probably not strongly dependent to environmental conditions. We found that the substellar and stellar objects in 25 Ori have similar spatial distributions and confirmed that 25 Ori is a gravitationally unbound stellar association., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

6. QUEST Eclipsing Binaries and ELLISA: Eclipsing binary search in the QUEST low latitude catalogue and the ELLISA light curve simulator

Abstract: The realistic simulation of variable star populations is fundamental to determine the selection function and contamination in existing and upcoming multi-epoch surveys. We present \ellisa, a simulator that produces an ensemble of mock light curves for a population of eclipsing binaries obtained from physical and orbital parameters consistent with different galactic populations, and which considers user-supplied time sampling and photometric errors to represent any given survey. We carried out a search for eclipsing binaries in the QUEST low-galactic latitude catalogue of variable stars, spanning an area of 476 sq. deg at $-25^\circ \la b \la 30^\circ$ and $190^ \circ \leqslant l \leqslant 230^ \circ$ towards the galactic anti-centre, and use \ellisa~to characterise the completeness of the resulting catalogue in terms of amplitudes and periods of variation as well as eclipsing binary type. The resulting catalogue consists of $1,125$ eclipsing binaries, out of which $179$, $60$ and $886$ are EA, EB and EW types respectively. We estimate, on average, $30\%$ completeness in the period range $0.25 \la P/d \la 1$ for EB+EW binaries and $15\%$ completeness for EA binaries with periods $2 \la P/d \la 10$, being the time sampling the primary factor determining the completeness of each type of eclipsing binary. This is one of few eclipsing binary catalogues reported with an estimate of the selection function. Mock eclipsing binary light curve libraries produced with \ellisa~can be used to estimate the selection function and optimise eclipsing binary searches in upcoming multi-epoch surveys such as Gaia, the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, the Zwicky Transient Factory or the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

7. Kinematic identification of young nearby moving groups from a sample of chromospherically active stars in the RAVE catalog

Abstract: The purpose of this study is the identification of young ($1< age < 100$ Myr), nearby ($d \leqslant100$ pc) moving groups (YNMGs) through their kinematic signature. YNMGs could be the result of the recent dispersal of young embedded clusters, such that they still represent kinematically cold groups, carrying the residual motion of their parental cloud. Using the fact that a large number ($\sim$ 14000) of the RAVE sources with evidence of chromospheric activity, also present signatures of stellar youth, we selected a sample of solar type sources with the highest probability of chromospheric activity to look for common kinematics. We made use of radial velocity information from RAVE and astrometric parameters from GAIA DR2 to construct a 6-dimension position-velocity vector catalog for our full sample. We developed a method based on the grouping of stars with similar orientation of their velocity vectors, which we call the Cone Method Sampling. Using this method, we detected 646 sources with high significance in the velocity space, with respect to the average orientation of artificial distributions made from a purely Gaussian velocity ellipsoid with null vertex deviation. We compared this sample of highly significant sources with a catalog of YNMGs reported in previous studies, which yield 75 confirmed members. 8. The CIDA Variability Survey of Orion OB1 II: demographics of the young, low-mass stellar populations

Abstract: We present results of our large scale, optical, multi-epoch photometric survey of ~180 square degrees across the Orion OB1 association, complemented with extensive follow up spectroscopy. We map and characterize in an uniform way the off-cloud, low-mass, pre-main sequence populations. We report 2064, mostly K and M-type, confirmed T Tauri members. Most (59%) are located in the OB1a subassociation, 27% in OB1b, and 14% within the confines of the A and B molecular clouds. There is significant structure in the spatial distribution of the young stars. We characterize two new clusterings of T Tauri stars, HD 35762 and HR 1833 in the OB1a subassociation, and two stellar overdensities in OB1b. There is indication of two populations of young stars in the OB1b region, located at two different distances, which may be due to the OB1a subassociation overlapping on front of OB1b. The various groups and regions can be ordered in an age sequence that agrees with the long standing picture of star formation starting in Orion OB1a some 10-15 Myr ago. We define a new type of T Tauri star, the C/W class, objects we propose may be nearing the end of their accretion phase. We detect the observational signature of Li depletion in young K and M stars with a timescale of 8.5 Myr. The decline of the accretion fraction from ~2 - 10 Myr, implies an accretion e-folding timescale of 2.1 Myr. Abstract: The Orion Star Forming Complex (OSFC) is a central target for the APOGEE-2 Young Cluster Survey. Existing membership catalogs span limited portions of the OSFC, reflecting the difficulty of selecting targets homogeneously across this extended, highly structured region. We have used data from wide field photometric surveys to produce a less biased parent sample of young stellar objects (YSOs) with infrared (IR) excesses indicative of warm circumstellar material or photometric variability at optical wavelengths across the full 420 square degrees extent of the OSFC. When restricted to YSO candidates with H < 12.4, to ensure S/N ~100 for a six visit source, this uniformly selected sample includes 1307 IR excess sources selected using criteria vetted by Koenig & Liesawitz and 990 optical variables identified in the Pan-STARRS1 3$\pi$ survey: 319 sources exhibit both optical variability and evidence of circumstellar disks through IR excess. Objects from this uniformly selected sample received the highest priority for targeting, but required fewer than half of the fibers on each APOGEE-2 plate. We fill the remaining fibers with previously confirmed and new color-magnitude selected candidate OSFC members. Radial velocity measurements from APOGEE-1 and new APOGEE-2 observations taken in the survey's first year indicate that ~90% of the uniformly selected targets have radial velocities consistent with Orion membership.The APOGEE-2 Orion survey will include >1100 bona fide YSOs whose uniform selection function will provide a robust sample for comparative analyses of the stellar populations and properties across all sub-regions of Orion., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

10. Herschel PACS observations of 4-10 Myr old Classical T Tauri stars in Orion OB1

Abstract: We present \emph{Herschel} PACS observations of 8 Classical T Tauri Stars in the $\sim 7-10$ Myr old OB1a and the $\sim 4-5$ Myr old OB1b Orion sub-asscociations. Detailed modeling of the broadband spectral energy distributions, particularly the strong silicate emission at 10 $\mu$m, shows that these objects are (pre)transitional disks with some amount of small optically thin dust inside their cavities, ranging from $\sim 4$ AU to $\sim 90$ AU in size. We analyzed \emph{Spitzer} IRS spectra for two objects in the sample: CVSO-107 and CVSO-109. The IRS spectrum of CVSO-107 indicates the presence of crystalline material inside its gap while the silicate feature of CVSO-109 is characterized by a pristine profile produced by amorphous silicates; the mechanisms creating the optically thin dust seem to depend on disk local conditions. Using millimeter photometry we estimated dust disk masses for CVSO-107 and CVSO-109 lower than the minimum mass of solids needed to form the planets in our Solar System, which suggests that giant planet formation should be over in these disks. We speculate that the presence and maintenance of optically thick material in the inner regions of these pre-transitional disks might point to low-mass planet formation., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables

Abstract: The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. 12. New Low-Mass Stars in the 25 Orionis Stellar Group and Orion OB1a Sub-association from SDSS-III/BOSS Spectroscopy

Abstract: The Orion OB1a sub-association is a rich low mass star (LMS) region. Previous spectroscopic studies have confirmed 160 LMSs in the 25 Orionis stellar group (25 Ori), which is the most prominent overdensity of Orion OB1a. Nonetheless, the current census of the 25 Ori members is estimated to be less than 50% complete, leaving a large number of members to be still confirmed. We retrieved 172 low-resolution stellar spectra in Orion OB1a observed as ancillary science in the SDSS-III/BOSS survey, for which we classified their spectral types and determined physical parameters. To determine memberships, we analyzed the H$_\alpha$ emission, LiI$\lambda$6708 absorption, and NaI$\lambda\lambda$8183, 8195 absorption as youth indicators in stars classified as M-type. We report 50 new LMSs spread across the 25 Orionis, ASCC 18, and ASCC 20 stellar groups with spectral types from M0 to M6, corresponding to a mass range of 0.10$\le m/\textrm{M}_\odot \le$0.58. This represents an increase of 50% in the number of known LMSs in the area and a net increase of 20% in the number of 25 Ori members in this mass range. Using parallax values from the Gaia DR1 catalog, we estimated the distances to these three stellar groups and found that they are all co-distant, at 338$\pm$66 pc. We analyzed the spectral energy distributions of these LMSs and classified their disks by evolutionary classes. Using H-R diagrams, we found a suggestion that 25 Ori could be slightly older that the other two observed groups in Orion OB1a., Comment: accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Abstract: We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially-resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median redshift of z = 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between redshifts z = 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGN and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5-meter Sloan Foundation Telescope at Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5-meter du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. Abstract: The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020 and will be followed by SDSS-V.

Abstract: The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) began observations in July 2014. It pursues three core programs: APOGEE-2, MaNGA, and eBOSS. In addition, eBOSS contains two major subprograms: TDSS and SPIDERS. This paper describes the first data release from SDSS-IV, Data Release 13 (DR13), which contains new data, reanalysis of existing data sets and, like all SDSS data releases, is inclusive of previously released data. DR13 makes publicly available 1390 spatially resolved integral field unit observations of nearby galaxies from MaNGA, the first data released from this survey. It includes new observations from eBOSS, completing SEQUELS. In addition to targeting galaxies and quasars, SEQUELS also targeted variability-selected objects from TDSS and X-ray selected objects from SPIDERS. DR13 includes new reductions of the SDSS-III BOSS data, improving the spectrophotometric calibration and redshift classification. DR13 releases new reductions of the APOGEE-1 data from SDSS-III, with abundances of elements not previously included and improved stellar parameters for dwarf stars and cooler stars. For the SDSS imaging data, DR13 provides new, more robust and precise photometric calibrations. Several value-added catalogs are being released in tandem with DR13, in particular target catalogs relevant for eBOSS, TDSS, and SPIDERS, and an updated red-clump catalog for APOGEE. This paper describes the location and format of the data now publicly available, as well as providing references to the important technical papers that describe the targeting, observing, and data reduction. The SDSS website, http://www.sdss.org, provides links to the data, tutorials and examples of data access, and extensive documentation of the reduction and analysis procedures. Abstract: Most existing studies of the angular momentum evolution of young stellar populations have focused on the youngest (1-3 Myr) T Tauri stars. In contrast, the angular momentum distributions of older T Tauri stars (4-10 Myr) have been less studied, even though they hold key insight to understanding stellar angular momentum evolution at a time when protoplanetary disks have largely dissipated and when models therefore predict changes in the rotational evolution that can in principle be tested. We present a study of photometric variability among 1,974 confirmed T Tauri members of various sub-regions of the Orion OB1 association, and with ages spanning 4-10 Myr, using optical time-series from three different surveys. For 564 of the stars (~32% of the weak-lined T Tauri stars and ~13% of the classical T Tauri stars in our sample) we detect statistically significant periodic variations which we attribute to the stellar rotation periods, making this one of the largest samples of T Tauri star rotation periods yet published. We observe a clear change in the overall rotation period distributions over the age range 4-10 Myr, with the progressively older sub-populations exhibiting systematically faster rotation. This result is consistent with angular momentum evolution model predictions of an important qualitative change in the stellar rotation periods starting at ~5 Myr, an age range for which very few observational constraints were previously available., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 16 pages, full appendices will be available in the electronic journal

Abstract: We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median z ∼ 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between z ~ 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

18. The number fraction of discs around brown dwarfs in Orion OB1a and the 25 Orionis group

Abstract: We present a study of 15 new brown dwarfs belonging to the $\sim7$ Myr old 25 Orionis group and Orion OB1a sub-association with spectral types between M6 and M9 and estimated masses between $\sim0.07$M$_\odot$ and $\sim0.01$ M$_\odot$. By comparing them through a Bayesian method with low mass stars ($0.8\lesssim$ M/M$_\odot\lesssim0.1$) from previous works in the 25 Orionis group, we found statistically significant differences in the number fraction of classical T Tauri stars, weak T Tauri stars, class II, evolved discs and purely photospheric emitters at both sides of the sub-stellar mass limit. Particularly we found a fraction of $3.9^{+2.4}_{-1.6}~\%$ low mass stars classified as CTTS and class II or evolved discs, against a fraction of $33.3^{+10.8}_{-9.8}~\%$ in the sub-stellar mass domain. Abstract: We present the results of a survey of the low mass star and brown dwarf population of the 25 Orionis group. Using optical photometry from the CIDA Deep Survey of Orion, near IR photometry from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy and low resolution spectroscopy obtained with Hectospec at the MMT, we selected 1246 photometric candidates to low mass stars and brown dwarfs with estimated masses within $0.02 \lesssim M/M_\odot \lesssim 0.8$ and spectroscopically confirmed a sample of 77 low mass stars as new members of the cluster with a mean age of $\sim$7 Myr. We have obtained a system initial mass function of the group that can be well described by either a Kroupa power-law function with indices $\alpha_3=-1.73\pm0.31$ and $\alpha_2=0.68\pm0.41$ in the mass ranges $0.03\leq M/M_\odot\leq 0.08$ and $0.08\leq M/M_\odot\leq0.5$ respectively, or a Scalo log-normal function with coefficients $m_c=0.21^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$ and $\sigma=0.36\pm0.03$ in the mass range $0.03\leq M/M_\odot\leq0.8$. From the analysis of the spatial distribution of this numerous candidate sample, we have confirmed the East-West elongation of the 25 Orionis group observed in previous works, and rule out a possible southern extension of the group. We find that the spatial distributions of low mass stars and brown dwarfs in 25 Orionis are statistically indistinguishable. Finally, we found that the fraction of brown dwarfs showing IR excesses is higher than for low mass stars, supporting the scenario in which the evolution of circumstellar discs around the least massive objects could be more prolonged., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

20. The QUEST RR Lyrae Survey: III. The Low Galactic Latitude Catalogue

Abstract: We present results for the QUEST RR Lyrae Survey at low galactic latitude, conducted entirely with observations obtained with the QUEST mosaic camera and the 1.0/1.5m J\"urgen Stock Schmidt telescope at the National Observatory of Venezuela. The survey spans an area of 476 sq. deg on the sky, with multi-epoch observations in the V, R and I photometric bands for 6.5x10^6 stars in the galactic latitude range 30<= b(deg) <=+25, in a direction close to the Galactic Anticenter 190<= l(deg)<= 230. The variability survey has a typical number of 30 observations per object in V and I and ~25 in R, with up to ~120-150 epochs in V and I and up to ~100 in R in the best sampled regions. The completeness magnitudes of the survey are V=R=18.5 mag, and I=18.0 mag. We identified 211 RR Lyrae stars, 160 bona fide stars of type ab and 51 candidates of type c, ours being the first deep RR Lyrae survey conducted at low galactic latitude.The completeness of the RR Lyrae survey was estimated in >95 per cent and ~85 per cent for RRab and RRc stars respectively. Photometric metallicities were computed based on the light curves and individual extinctions calculated from minimum light colours for each RRab star. Distances were obtained with typical errors ~7 per cent. The RR Lyrae survey simultaneously spans a large range of heliocentric distances 0.5<= R_hel(kpc)<=40 and heights above the plane -15<=z(kpc)<=+20, with well known completeness across the survey area, making it an ideal set for studying the struc ture of the Galactic thick disk., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. 21. A large-scale optical-near infrared survey for brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars in the Orion OB1 association

Abstract: We report the initial results of a large-scale optical-near infrared survey to extend the known young population of the entire Orion star-forming region down to the substellar domain. Using deep optical I-band photometry and data from the 2MASS survey, we selected candidates across ~14.8 deg^2 in the ~8 Myr old Ori OB1a subassociation and over ~6.7 deg^2 in the Ori OB1b subassociation (age ~3), with completeness down to 0.05Mo and 0.072Mo respectively. We obtained low resolution optical spectra for a subsample of 4 candidates in Ori OB1a and 26 in Ori OB1b; as a result we confirmed 3 new members in Ori OB1a, one of which is substellar, and 19 new members in Ori OB1b, out of which 7 are at the substellar limit and 5 are substellar. We looked into the presence of accretion signatures by measuring the strength of the Ha line in emission. Accordingly, we classified the new members as having Classical T-Tauri star (CTTS) or Weak Lined T Tauri star-like (WTTS) nature. We found that all the new members confirmed in Ori OB1a are WTTSs, while 39 +25/-22 % of the new members in Ori OB1b exhibit CTTS-like behavior, suggestive of ongoing accretion from a circum(sub)stellar disk. Additionally we found that none of the members confirmed in OB1a show near-IR color excess while 38 +26/-21 % of OB1b members show H-K color excess. These results are consistent with recent findings for low mass young stars in Orion OB1. The similarity in CTTS-like properties and near-IR excess across the substellar boundary gives support to the idea of a common formation mechanism for low mass stars and at least the most massive brown dwarfs. Finally, we remark the discovery of two new members classified as CTTSs, both exhibiting W(Ha) < -140 A, suggesting significant ongoing accretion., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

Abstract: The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as ¿The Cannon¿ and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020 and will be followed by SDSS-V. © 2018. The American Astronomical Society..

Abstract: We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median ). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

Abstract: We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median ). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

Abstract: We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median ). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Abstract: We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median ). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

39. Formación, evolución y detección de planetas de tipo terrestre en el límite subestelar

Abstract: En esta Tesis Doctoral estudiamos la formación, evolución y probabilidad de detección de planetas de tipo terrestre orbitando objetos de masa 0,08 M⊙ cercana al límite subestelar. Para estudiar el proceso de formación y evolución planetaria en tales sistemas, desarrollamos experimentos numéricos haciendo uso de un código de N-cuerpos preexistente, al cual modificamos incluyendo de manera secuencial efectos relevantes a los escenarios de trabajo. En una primera instancia, analizamos los procesos de formación y evolución planetaria posteriores a la disipación del gas en el disco. Para ello, se incluyó en el código de N-cuerpos los efectos de marea con la contracción y evolución del período de rotación del objeto central, y efectos de relatividad general. El resultado más importante es que ambos efectos juegan un rol primario en la evolución de los sistemas ya que permiten la supervivencia de planetas de tipo terrestre en órbitas compactas cercanas al objeto central e incluso dentro de la zona habitable. En una segunda instancia, analizamos la formación y evolución planetaria incluyendo etapas tempranas en las que está presente un disco de gas y etapas posteriores a la disipación del disco. Para la interacción entre los embriones planetarios y el gas del disco adoptamos dos prescripciones diferentes e independientes de la literatura que fueron incluidas en el código de N-cuerpos que previamente modificamos incluyendo los efectos de marea y relatividad general. La estructura del disco de gas es descripta a partir de perfiles radiales de densidad superficial, temperatura y altura. Los resultados indican que las propiedades físicas y orbitales de los planetas dependen fuertemente de la prescripción utilizada para modelar la interacción entre los embriones y el gas. Sólo una prescripción permite la supervivencia de planetas en la zona habitable y, además, da lugar a una distribución de cociente de períodos orbitales de planetas adyacentes que es consistente con la derivada a partir de exoplanetas de tipo terrestre observados alrededor de estrellas con masas M⋆ < 0,14 M⊙. Finalmente calculamos la probabilidad de detección de los sistemas simulados y de los pocos planetas terrestres observados en torno a objetos cercanos al límite subestelar. Para ello desarrollamos un código que simula tránsitos, cambios en velocidad radial y en movimiento propio de estrellas debido a la interacción con sus sistemas planetarios e incluyendo valores realistas de errores y muestreo temporal. Empleamos un análisis de frecuencias básico para la detección de planetas. Para estrellas a distancias d ≤ 12 pc los resultados muestran que el método de velocidad radial es el más eficiente y permite la detección de 100% de sistemas como los observados y de hasta 85% para los sistemas simulados. Con el método de tránsito se detecta 2% de los sistemas observados y 1% de los sistemas simulados. Los resultados muestran que el método de movimientos propios no es capaz todavía de detectar los sistemas de interés pero calculamos que lo será con los datos de Gaia DR5. Entender la formación y evolución de planetas terrestres en el límite subestelar es fundamental para estimar el número de planetas habitables en la Galaxia. Esta tesis aporta resultados relevantes para el tratamiento teórico de estos sistemas y ofrece estimaciones realistas sobre la detección de las contrapartes observacionales., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Abstract: Young stellar aggregates are the laboratories where we study the process by which almost every star in the Galaxy has formed. Most of the young stellar groups break up in at most a few tens of Myr and only a few of them survive as gravitational bound entities to become open clusters. This phenomenon is usually understood as a rapid evolution of young stellar systems when the parental molecular gas is expelled, however, there is also evidence suggesting that these unbound stellar associations are formed in a structured process. To understand how stars are formed and how young stellar systems evolve, it is essential to estimate the total mass of the association, which can be achieved through the analysis of the stellar initial mass function (IMF). Despite many contributions to the study of the IMF, only a few of them over the whole cluster mass range, it is still unclear how it depends on environmental conditions and/or time. Due to its closeness, low extinction, stellar density and evolutionary status, an excellent place to study the IMF, from planetary-mass objects to intermediate/high-mass stars, and the early evolution of a young stellar system that just emerged from its embedded phase, is the 25 Orionis stellar group (25 Ori). Combining new deep optical photometry from DECam with optical and NIR data from the literature, we selected 1687 member candidates of 25 Ori with${I_c}$-band magnitudes between 5 and 23.3 mag in an area of 1.1${^\circ}$ radius. With this sample we derived the system IMF of 25 Ori from 0.012 to 13.1 ${M_\odot}$, which is one of the few IMFs across the entire mass range of a stellar association. The resultant system IMF is well-described by a two-part power-law function and by a tapered power-law form. We also report its best lognormal parameterization. This system IMF do not present significant variations within a radius of about 7 pc, which indicates that the substellar and stellar objects in 25 Ori do not have any preferential spatial distribution. We compared the reported system IMF as well as the BD/ratio ratio with those of a large diversity of stellar populations and did not find any significant discrepancies, which strongly supports the hypothesis that the star formation mechanism is largely insensitive to environmental conditions. In order to confirm the membership of each candidate in our sample, we have an ongoing spectroscopic survey using several world-wide facilities. We have obtained high-resolution (${R\sim22000}$) spectra of 77 intermediate/high-mass (1.3-11 ${M_\odot}$) candidates with OAN-SPM/MES and of 1185 intermediate-mass (0.3-5.2 ${M_\odot}$) candidates with SDSS-IV/APOGEE-2. Additionally, we have low-resolution (${R\approx1000-2000}$) spectra of 400 low-mass (0.25-0.8 ${M_\odot}$) candidates with MMT/Hectospec, of 172 low-mass (0.09-0.7 ${M_\odot}$) candidates with SDSS-III/BOSS and of 66 brown dwarf (0.01-0.08 ${M_\odot}$) candidates with GTC/OSIRIS. After applying diverse membership criteria, we have so far confirmed 530 members from the spectroscopic sample, out of which 290 lie inside the 25 Ori area and 208 of them are confirmed for the first time. With this sample of confirmed member, plus those in the literature, we estimated that 25 Ori is a 6.5${\pm}$2.5 Myr old population located at 356${\pm}$47 pc and presenting a low extinction of 0.29${\pm}$0.26 mag. Also, we estimated that the 25 Ori mean radial velocity is 20.9${\pm}$2.0 km s${^{-1}}$. Using these parameters we found that 25 Ori is a dynamically young group without time enough to be relaxed and confirmed that it is, in fact, a gravitationally unbound association that will be part of the Galactic Disk population. Considering the observed and confirmed members as well as those already confirmed in the literature, the spectroscopic follow-up is ${\sim}$75% complete, with most of the remaining candidates to be observed with estimated masses around the substellar mass limit. We have ongoing observations to complete the spectroscopic survey of 25 Ori.
