Abstract

Single-step Coulomb excitation of $^{46,48,49,50}$Ti is presented. A complete set of $E2$ matrix elements for the quintuplet of states in $^{49}$Ti, centered on the $2^+$ core excitation, was measured for the first time. A total of nine $E2$ matrix elements are reported, four of which were previously unknown. $^{49}_{22}$Ti$_{27}$ shows a $20\%$ quenching in electric quadrupole transition strength as compared to its semi-magic $^{50}_{22}$Ti$_{28}$ neighbour. This $20\%$ quenching, while empirically unprecedented, can be explained with a remarkably simple two-state mixing model, which is also consistent with other ground-state properties such as the magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment. A connection to nucleon transfer data and the quenching of single-particle strength is also demonstrated. The simplicity of the $^{49}$Ti-$^{50}$Ti pair (i.e., approximate single-$j$ $0f_{7/2}$ valence space and isolation of yrast states from non-yrast states) provides a unique opportunity to disentangle otherwise competing effects in the ground-state properties of atomic nuclei, the emergence of collectivity, and the role of proton-neutron interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The design and performance of a new Compton-suppressed HPGe and charged-particle array, CLARION2-TRINITY, are described. The TRINITY charged-particle array is comprised of 64 Cerium-doped Gadolinium Aluminium Gallium Garnet (GAGG:Ce) crystals configured into five rings spanning 7-54 degrees, and two annular silicon detectors that can shadow or extend the angular coverage to backward angles with minimal $\gamma$-ray attenuation. GAGG:Ce is a non-hygroscopic, bright, and relatively fast scintillator with a light distribution well matched to SiPMs. Count rates up to 40 kHz per crystal are sustainable. Fundamental characteristics of GAGG:Ce are measured and presented, including light- and heavy-ion particle identification (PID) capability, pulse-height defects, radiation hardness, and emission spectra. The CLARION2 array consists of up to 16 Compton-suppressed HPGe Clover detectors ($\approx4\%$ efficiency at 1 MeV) configured into four rings (eight HPGe crystal rings) using a non-Archimedean geometry that suppresses back-to-back coincident 511-keV gamma rays. The entire array is instrumented with 100- and 500-MHz (14 bit) waveform digitizers which enable triggerless operation, pulse-shape discrimination, fast timing, and pileup correction. Finally, two examples of experimental data taken during the commissioning of the CLARION2-TRINITY system are given: a PID spectrum from $^{16}$O + $^{18}$O fusion-evaporation, and PID and Doppler-corrected $\gamma$-ray spectra from $^{48}$Ti + $^{12}$C Coulomb excitation., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

This dissertation supports the hypothesis that the current debate about ‘a compensation culture’ as against ‘a negligence culture’ is missing a third dimension of ‘professional regulatory culture’ that has not been accorded sufficient attention in the tort literature to date. My original contribution to knowledge also demonstrates that many of the assertions by insurers that trends in premium rates for liability insurance are almost entirely driven by tort claims is largely a fallacy. The reason this is important is because there is often a ‘taken for granted view’ that the frequency of accidents causes claims which result in escalating insurance costs. That in turn can lead to calls for further tort reforms in many jurisdictions but the real mischief has not been properly identified, as revealed in this significant research. Proposals in 2002 to reform the Irish compensation system for negligently inflicted personal injury provoked a flurry of concerns from academics. A number of reservations were raised about the potential for success and the risks to fairness for claimants. The majority professed a preference for the status quo but they were largely operating from an evidence free environment and many relied on little more than anecdotes from the legal professions. However, their analyses also provided a unique opportunity to identify what tort scholars considered to be the key markers of an optimal redress system. To address those academic concerns the scope of this case study interrogated data for an entire nation, comprising of over 6.7 million claims with a value of €34bl and triangulated those trends with analyses of accident frequency as against insurance pricing and profitability over several decades. The role of the media in negative public perceptions of negligence law is also addressed. These wide-ranging and robust statistical analyses make a substantial contribution to address a gap that it is acknowledged exists in the tort literature. While this thesis concludes that many of the academic concerns about the reforms were misplaced, it reveals that there are layers of interlocking relationships to which tort theory does not currently ascribe sufficient weight.

Abstract

Activation of the innate immune system via pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) is key to generate lasting adaptive immunity. PRRs detect unique chemical patterns associated with invading microorganisms, but whether and how the physical properties of PRR ligands influence the development of the immune response remains unknown. Through the study of fungal mannans, we show that the physical form of PRR ligands dictates the immune response. Soluble mannans are immunosilent in the periphery but elicit a potent pro-inflammatory response in the draining lymph node (dLN). By modulating the physical form of mannans, we developed a formulation that targets both the periphery and the dLN. When combined with viral glycoprotein antigens, this mannan formulation broadens epitope recognition, elicits potent antigen-specific neutralizing antibodies, and confers protection against viral infections of the lung. Thus, the physical properties of microbial ligands determine the outcome of the immune response and can be harnessed for vaccine development.

Abstract

Direct plant growth promotion can be achieved by several mechanisms. Indirect plant growth promotion occurs by protection of the plant against pathogens, most often fungi but also bacteria and viruses. This chapter discusses the role of companies in the complicated, time-consuming, and expensive process from harvesting seeds to food on the plate. Mycorrhizal fungi live in symbiosis with more than 80% of the land plants. Mycorrhizal fungi can be considered as an extension of the root system. A potentially valuable product is often patented to protect its application. Discoveries at universities are published, often in specialized journals. The authorization process of plant protection products consists of evaluation of dossiers of the active microorganism and of the formulated product. Many chemical firms have recognized the demand for biological products and have become active in the biological crop protection business.

19. Size, more than colour, drives dyadic interactions in sub-adults of a colour polymorphic cichlid

Abstract

Social and aggressive behaviours often affect the fitness of multiple interacting individuals simultaneously. Here, we assessed dyadic interactions in a colour-polymorphic cichlid fish, the red devil, Amphilophus labiatus. We found that sub-adult red devil pairs of smaller body size interacted more, and were more aggressive towards each other, than pairs comprising larger individuals. Interactions did not significantly differ between colour morphs, i.e. between dark, gold and heterotypic pairs. Interestingly, within a broad range of parameters, an automated measure of time that the two fish spent in close proximity was an accurate proxy for their level of aggression, as measured by an observer from video recordings. These results show that, between sub-adult red devils, (aggressive) interactions significantly depend on body size, but not colour morph, of the interacting individuals. In addition, the results support the use of automated data-gathering approaches as an appropriate tool for studies of aggression.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: There is considerable interest in improving the education and care of women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to improve pregnancy outcomes. Despite increased awareness, not all women with IBD have access to pregnancy-related education and the quality of counseling is variable. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a simple educational intervention for improving pregnancy-related knowledge and to evaluate the effect of education on patient outcomes including anxiety, depression, and quality of life in women with IBD. METHOD(S): This prospective study of women with IBD who were pregnant or planning a pregnancy evaluated the effectiveness of a single gastroenterologist-led educational intervention in improving pregnancy-related knowledge, measured using the Crohn's and Colitis Pregnancy Knowledge score 1 month postintervention. Secondary outcomes included the effect on anxiety and depression, quality of life, medication adherence, and patient satisfaction. RESULT(S): One hundred women with IBD were recruited. Fifty percent were pregnant at the time of the intervention. Baseline knowledge scores were similar independent of the patients' pregnancy status or whether they had previously received counseling from their gastroenterologist. Median Crohn's and Colitis Pregnancy Knowledge scores postintervention (n = 82) were higher than preintervention scores (14/17 vs 10/17; P < 0.001). In addition, 32% of patients had poor knowledge at baseline (score <=7/17), compared to only 5% after the intervention (P < 0.001). There was a significant improvement in total anxiety and depression and quality of life scores postintervention. Medication adherence and patient satisfaction were excellent. CONCLUSION(S): Uptake of this gastroenterologist-led educational intervention has the potential to improve pregnancy knowledge, promote medication adherence, and enhance quality of life for women with IBD globally.Copyright © 2021 Crohn's & Colitis Foundation.
