Gwyneth Dow was appointed as a Lecturer in the Education Faculty in 1958, a Senior Lecturer in 1963 and Reader in 1970. She was an inaugural member of the Steering Committee of the Curriculum Advisory Board in Victoria, for which she fostered pilot schemes to introduce curriculum and organisational changes in secondary schools, and published several reports. She introduced a Dip. Ed. Course "Systems of Education" and was instrumental in introducing an alternative Dip. Ed. Course, Course B, which concentrated on method and practical teaching in the first year Gwyneth Dow, a descendant of the Terry family began researching the family history in 1965 after writing an article on Samuel and Rosetta for the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'.

Gwyneth Dow (nee Terry) left Melbourne Girls Grammar School in 1936 and began working as a clerk and hairdresser, continuing her education at night school. She enrolled at the University of Melbourne in 1938. During this time, she married journalist Rohan Rivett but the marriage ended in 1946. She contributed to a Social Survey undertaken by economist Wilfred Prest and attained a BA in 1945. After marrying Hume Dow in 1948, she undertook a DipEd and began a career in teaching. Returning from a brief period in London, Gwyn Dow taught at Mac.Roberston Girls High School and attained a BEd. In 1958, she was appointed as a Lecturer in the Education Faculty. She attained MA in 1962, writing about lawyer, politician and education reformer, George Higginbotham. Gwyn Dow was appointed Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne in 1963 and Reader in 1970. She undertook a Fulbright Scholarship in 1982 and the was awarded a Doctorate in Education in 1984.
