9. Alkylphenol (AP) Contamination in the Different Characterized Environmental Matrices in Water Treatment Effluent Outlets of the Marseille Coastal Area, France.

Abstract

In this study, concentrations of alkylphenolic (AP) compounds were measured and quantified in sediments, soil and aerosols collected in the vicinity of Cortiou Creek in the coastal area of Marseilles directly downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The three isomers of the nonylphenols (NPs), i.e. NP1, NP2 and NP3, were detected in sediments throughout the plume with average concentrations at each station of 62.93 µg.kg−1, 28.09 µg.kg−1, and 117.58 µg.kg−1, respectively. The stations beyond the plume measured levels of 33.67 µg.kg−1, 11.11 µg.kg−1, and 23.89 µg.kg−1, respectively. These chemicals were also found principally in soil samples with average concentrations of each isomer distributed at 6 stations at amounts of 48.08 µg.kg−1, 19.49 µg.kg−1 and 339.13 µg.kg−1 exposed to the prevailing wind, while at stations protected from predominantly high winds, concentrations ranged from 5.8 µg.kg−1 to 41.41 µg.kg−1. The most wide-ranging measurement is for the occurrence of these APs in aerosol samples, which were detected at levels of 0.81 to 8.46 ng.m−1. In addition, 4 tert-OP and 4 n-OP were not detected in these samples. The most elevated isomers found in this study were NP1 (28.44%) and NP3 (57.54%) within the three different matrices. According to the predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs), these concentrations in the sediments exceeded the PNEC value, which indicates that they are likely to exert an adverse effect on benthic organisms. Abstract

This study aims to explore persistent microorganic pollutants (Poly chloro byphneyls (PCBs) and Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs)) in sediment and mud clams (Polymesoda erosa) in Segara Anakan Lagoon (SAL). In addition, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the mud clams were evaluated their risk consumption and Bioaccumulation factor in sediment. Concentrations of seven PCBs in the sediment were found in the range 0.11 ± 0.05 to 2.63 ± 0.1 μg kg−1 sed dw. OCPs levels were found in the range of 0.2 ± 0.05 and 2.9 ± 0.01 μg kg−1 sed dw. In P. erosa, 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) (USEPA) were found in the range from 103.34 ± 2.01 to 1348.31 ± 18.21 μg kg−1 tissue dry weight (dw), PCBs content was found only in one station at concentration 2.34 ± 1.72 μg kg−1 tissue dw and OCPs content was found in the range 0.87 ± 0.03 to 24.79 ± 1.30 μg kg−1 tissue dw. The disturbance matrices have been evaluated with the appropriate samples according to the extraction yield and yield analysis. Several guidelines evaluate the quality of sediment on PCBs and OCPs (i.e. pp-DDE). The consumption evaluation shows that this mud clam P. erosa has been contaminated of PAHs and not recommended for human consumption. They were potentially as site-specific bioaccumulation in sediment for organic micropollutants which receives from any untreated sewage, industrial waste discharge into the canal system of river of Segara Anakan Lagoon. Abstract

International audience; Since bacterial consortia involved in conventional wastewater treatment processes are not efficient in removing diclofenac (DCF), an emerging pollutant frequently detected in water bodies, the identification of microorganisms able to metabolise this pharmaceutical compound is relevant. us, DCF removal was investigated using bacteria isolated from aqueous stock solutions of this micro-pollutant and identified as Bacillus and Brevibacillus species using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. A 100% DCF removal was achieved after 17 hours of experiment at 20°C in a nutrient medium; the biodegradation kinetic followed a pseudo-first order (k biol = 11 L·g SS −1 ·d −1). Quantitative assessment of DCF removal showed that its main route was biotic degradation. e main degradation product of DCF, 4′-hydroxy-diclofenac (4′-OH-DCF), was identified using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionisation high-resolution mass spectrometry. Since the ecotoxicological impact of 4′-hydroxy-diclofenac was not reported in the literature, the ecotoxicity of DCF and its metabolite were tentatively evaluated using Vibrio fischeri bioassays. Results from these tests showed that this metabolite is not more toxic than its parent compound and may hopefully be an intermediate product in the DCF transformation. Indeed, no significant difference in ecotoxicity was observed after 30 min between DCF (50 should be writtten in subscript all along the manuscript in EC 50 = 23 ± 4 mg·L −1) and 4′-hydroxy-diclofenac (EC 50 = 19 ± 2 mg·L −1). Besides, the study highlighted a limit of the Microtox ® bioassay, which is largely used to assess ecotoxicity. e bioluminescence of Vibrio fischeri was impacted due to the production of microbial activity and the occurrence of some carbon source in the studied medium.
