Purpose : This study aims at verifying the negative impact of the announcement made by OPEC to maintain oil production - on March 5, 2020 - on the oil companies´ share prices in the main countries of Latin America and the BRIC´s. Design/methodology/approach: Such objective is verified through an event whose final sample consists of 29 oil companies of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Russia, India and China. Findings: H1- OPEC announcement negatively affects the share price of oil companies- is not confirmed. However, H2 – OPEC announcement differently affects the share price of oil companies in Latin America and other emerging countries that make up the BRIC - is confirmed. Research limitations/implications: The sample considers only oil companies operating in the oil and integrated gas segments, as well as oil and gas exploration and production. Practical implications: These results expand the understanding of the impact of oil commodity price shocks on the share prices of oil companies in emerging countries, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Originality/value: Verification of a positive shock impact on the supply or the reduction in the oil price on the return on shares of BRIC´s companies and among other Latin American countries, during Covid-19.

O presente trabalho estudo busca investigar a relacao entre ativos intangiveis, divida e criacao de valor. A literatura sugere uma relacao positiva entre intangibilidade e criacao de valor. Por outro lado, empresas com maior grau de intangibilidade tendem a ser menos endividadas. Ja a relacao entre divida e valor e dubia. A amostra e composta por 261 empresas nao financeiras de capital aberto, analisada no periodo de 2009 a 2016. A tecnica econometrica empregada foi regressao com dados em painel pooled e com efeitos fixos. Os resultados indicam que ha uma relacao direta e estatisticamente significante entre intangibilidade e criacao de valor e entre intangibilidade e retorno sobre os ativos. A intangibilidade apresentou relacao negativa e estatisticamente significante com a divida, sobretudo com a divida a valor de mercado. Ja a divida a valor contabil possui relacao direta com a intangibilidade. Por fim, verificou-se uma relacao negativa e estatisticamente significante entre criacao de valor e divida.

Electrophorus spp. generate high-voltage electric discharges for defense and hunting, and low-voltage electric discharges (as other Gymnotiformes) for electrolocation and communication. Despite intense interest in the unusual electrogenic and electroreceptive capacities of electric eels, the other sensory systems of Electrophorus spp. are relatively poorly known. Here we describe the ontogenetic development and organization of the cephalic lateral-line canals in the lowland electric eel, Electrophorus varii. Preserved specimens of larvae, juveniles, and adults were examined to describe the spatial distribution of the canals and pores. Ontogenetic shifts of the cephalic lateral line formation were observed for each canal and support a hypothesis of non-synchronized development. The morphogenesis of cephalic canals in larvae and juveniles begins just before the onset of exogenous feeding. In adults, the cephalic sensory canals are formed separately from the skull and overlay cranial and mandibular bones and muscles. This study provides the first detailed description of the development and organization of the cephalic lateral-line system in Electrophorus varii. Resumo Electrophorus spp. geram descargas elétricas de alta voltagem, usadas para defesa e caça, e (como os demais Gymnotiformes) descargas elétricas de baixa voltagem para eletrolocalização e comunicação. Apesar do grande interesse nas capacidades eletrogênicas e eletrorreceptivas incomuns dos poraquês, os outros sistemas sensoriais de Electrophorus spp. são relativamente pouco conhecidos. Aqui nós descrevemos o desenvolvimento ontogenético e a organização dos canais da linha lateral cefálica no poraquê da planície Electrophorus varii. Exemplares preservados de larvas, juvenis e adultos foram analisados para descrever a distribuição espacial dos canais e poros. Variações ontogenéticas na formação da linha lateral cefálica foram observadas para cada canal, apresentando um desenvolvimento não-sincronizado. Variações ontogenéticas da formação da linha lateral cefálica foram observadas para cada canal e suportam uma hipótese de desenvolvimento assincrônico. A morfogênese dos canais cefálicos em larvas e juvenis precede o início da alimentação exógena. Nos adultos, os canais sensoriais cefálicos se formam separadamente do crânio e sobrepõem os ossos e músculos cranianos e mandibulares. Este estudo fornece a primeira descrição detalhada do desenvolvimento e organização do sistema da linha lateral cefálica de Electrophorus varii.

Ichthyological surveys have traditionally been conducted using whole-specimen, capture-based sampling with varied, but conventional fishing gear. Recently, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has emerged as a complementary, and possible alternative, approach to whole-specimen methodologies. In the tropics, where much of the diversity remains undescribed, vast reaches continue unexplored, and anthropogenic activities are constant threats; there have been few eDNA attempts for ichthyological inventories. We tested the discriminatory power of eDNA using MiFish primers with existing public reference libraries and compared this with capture-based methods in two distinct ecosystems in the megadiverse Amazon basin. In our study, eDNA provided an accurate snapshot of the fishes at higher taxonomic levels and corroborated its effectiveness to detect specialized fish assemblages. Some flaws in fish metabarcoding studies are routine issues addressed in natural history museums. Thus, by expanding their archives to include eDNA and adopting a series of initiatives linking collection-based research, training and outreach, natural history museums can enable the effective use of eDNA to survey Earth’s hotspots of biodiversity before taxa go extinct. Our project surveying poorly explored rivers and using DNA vouchered archives to build metabarcoding libraries for Neotropical fishes can serve as a model of this protocol.

Fourteen novel microsatellite loci are described and characterized in two species of electric eels, Electrophorus variiand E. voltaifrom floodplains and rivers of the Amazon rainforest. These loci are polymorphic, highly informative, and have the capacity to detect reliable levels of genetic diversity. Likewise, the high combined probability of paternity exclusion value and low combined probability of genetic identity value obtained demonstrate that the new set of loci displays suitability for paternity studies on electric eels. In addition, the cross-amplification of electric eel species implies that it may also be useful in the study of the closely related E. electricus, and to other Neotropical electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) species as tested herein. Resumo Catorze novos loci microsatélites são descritos e caracterizados em duas espécies de poraquês, Electrophorus varii e E. voltai de planícies alagadas e rios da floresta amazônica. Esses loci são polimórficos, altamente informativos e têm a capacidade de detectar níveis confiáveis de diversidade genética. Da mesma forma, o alto valor de exclusão de paternidade combinado com a baixa probabilidade de identidade genética demonstra que o novo conjunto de loci exibe adequação para estudos de paternidade em poraquês. Além disso, a amplificação cruzada de espécies de peixes elétricos implica que também pode ser útil no estudo da espécie intimamente relacionada E. electricus, e de outras espécies de peixes elétricos neotropicais (Gymnotiformes).

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Durbin from the Paraná do Urariá system in Central Amazon region, Amazonas state, Brazil, is described. The new species is allocated into the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group due to its color pattern, composed by a well-defined, horizontally elongated humeral blotch continuous with a conspicuous midlateral dark stripe that becomes blurred towards the caudal peduncle, and can be distinguished from all other species of the group by possessing humeral blotch and continuous midlateral stripe broad, occupying vertical height equivalent of two scale rows. A tricolored pattern composed dorsally by a red or reddish longitudinal stripe, a middle iridescent, golden or silvery longitudinal stripe, and ventrally by a variably-developed longitudinal dark stripe is identified as a putative additional character shared by the species of the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group. The presence of bony hooks in all fins in mature males of some species of the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group is also discussed.

The Amazon Basin is an unquestionable biodiversity hotspot, containing the highest freshwater biodiversity on earth and facing off a recent increase in anthropogenic threats. The current knowledge on the spatial distribution of the freshwater fish species is greatly deficient in this basin, preventing a comprehensive understanding of this hyper-diverse ecosystem as a whole. Filling this gap was the priority of a transnational collaborative project, i.e. the AmazonFish project - https://www.amazon-fish.com/. Relying on the outputs of this project, we provide the most complete fish species distribution records covering the whole Amazon drainage. The database, including 2,406 validated freshwater native fish species, 232,936 georeferenced records, results from an extensive survey of species distribution including 590 different sources (e.g. published articles, grey literature, online biodiversity databases and scientific collections from museums and universities worldwide) and field expeditions conducted during the project. Is there only one electric eel species? For two and a half centuries since its description by Linnaeus, Electrophorus electricus has captivated humankind by its capacity to generate strong electric discharges. Despite the importance of Electrophorus in multiple fields of science, the possibility of additional species-level diversity in the genus, which could also reveal a hidden variety of substances and bioelectrogenic functions, has hitherto not been explored. Here, based on overwhelming patterns of genetic, morphological, and ecological data, we reject the hypothesis of a single species broadly distributed throughout Greater Amazonia. Our analyses readily identify three major lineages that diverged during the Miocene and Pliocene—two of which warrant recognition as new species. For one of the new species, we recorded a discharge of 860 V, well above 650 V previously cited for Electrophorus, making it the strongest living bioelectricity generator., A single species of electric eel, Electrophorus electricus, has been described. Here, de Santana et al. show that there are three major lineages of Electrophorus distributed across Greater Amazonia and describe two new species, one with a much stronger electric discharge than was previously known.

Aim: This study aimed at assessing the prevalence and severity of short face pattern in ethnically different individuals. Material and Methods: The sample comprised 4,409 Brazilians (2,192 females and 2,217 males), with a mean age of 13 years, enrolled in secondary schools in the municipality of Bauru. The sample inclusion criteria involved subjects with vertically impaired facial relationship based on excessive lip compression, when standing at natural head position, with the lips at rest. Once short face syndrome had been identified, the individuals were classified into three severity subtypes: mild, moderate, and severe. The sample was then stratified by ethnic background as White (Caucasoid), Black (African descent), Brown (mixed Caucasian–African descent), Yellow (Asian descent), and Brazilian Indian (Native Brazilian descent), using the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics classification. The chi-square test at the 5% significance level was used to compare frequency ratios of individuals with vertically impaired facial relationships and across different ethnicities, according to severity. Results: The prevalence of short face pattern was 3.15%, as 1.11%, 1.99%, and 0.02% considered mild, moderate and severe subtypes, respectively. The severe subtype was rare (0.02%) and found only in one White individual. The White group had the highest relative frequency (45.53%) of the moderate subtype, followed by Brown individuals (43.40%). In the mild subtype, Yellow (68.08%) and White (62.21%) individuals showed similar and higher relative frequency values. Conclusion: The prevalence of short face pattern was 3.15%, and White individuals had the highest prevalence.

A new species of Paralithoxus is described from the Ajarani River, a small tributary of the Branco River basin, Roraima State, Brazilian Amazon. The genus Paralithoxus comprises species described from the Essequibo drainage in Guyana, Approuague and Maroni in French Guiana, Suriname River in Surinam, and more recently, from Jari and Amapá rivers, in Brazil. Despite occurring in a rock-bottomed fast-flowing stream as the other species of Paralithoxus, this is the first species of the genus collected at 900 m altitude, in the Serra da Mocidade highlands, an isolated and poorly accessible small mountain chain at the southern border of the Guiana Shield. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having truncate teeth, color pattern with green spots on dark olive-brown background, alternating dark and light blotches on fins and by the pelvic fin being as long as or longer than the pectoral fin. Sex dimorphism of the species is described. Comments on morphology and osteology are provided and compared with congeners. RESUMO Uma nova espécie de Paralithoxus é descrita do rio Ajarani, um pequeno tributário da bacia do rio Branco, Estado de Roraima, Amazônia Brasileira. O gênero Paralithoxus é composto por espécies descritas para as drenagens do Essequibo na Guiana, Approuague e Maroni na Guiana Francesa, rio Suriname no Suriname, e mais recentemente, para os rios Jari e Amapá, no Brasil. Apesar de ocorrer em pequenos riachos com fundo rochoso e correnteza forte como o restante dos representantes de Paralithoxus, esta é a primeira espécie do gênero coletada a 900 m de altitude, na Serra da Mocidade, uma pequena cadeia de montanhas localizada em uma área isolada e de difícil acesso na porção sul do Escudo das Guianas. A nova espécie distingue-se de suas congêneres pela presença de dentes truncados, pelo padrão de coloração com manchas verde claras sobre fundo oliva-marrom escuro, alternando manchas claras e escuras nas nadadeiras e pelo comprimento relativo da nadadeira pélvica igual ou maior que o comprimento da nadadeira peitoral. O dimorfismo sexual da espécie é descrito. Comentários sobre a morfologia e osteologia da espécie são feitos e comparados com suas congêneres.

The purpose of this study is to test the application of pecking order theory (POT) to companies operating in Brazil and the countries that form the Pacific Alliance (Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Colombia). In order to do this, the methodology chosen is the one developed by Frank and Goyal, which aims to check if the company’s capital structure follows a specific hierarchy based on capital cost. The sample consists of 255 listed companies operating in Brazil and 346 listed companies operating in Pacific Alliance countries between 2010 and 2016. The applied method is a pooled panel data regression model The results point out that the mentioned theory is more applicable to major corporations in Brazil but as well as to small firms in the Pacific Alliance countries. These findings are obtained based on the statistical significance of capital structure determinant market-to-book value ratio, for Brazilian companies, and at tangibility and profitability, in the case of Pacific Alliance companies.

A new species of Moenkhausia is described from Rio Curicuriari and Rio Tiquie, both right-bank tributaries of the upper Rio Negro basin, Amazonas State, Brazil. The new taxon differs from all congeners, except M. agnesae and M. beninei, by the combination of a sinuous humeral blotch, similar to a compressed letter Z, and distinct dark longitudinal stripes along the body sides. The new species can be distinguished from M. agnesae and M. beninei by the presence of a single humeral blotch and of longitudinal stripes running through the center of the scales, more conspicuous dorsally.

Myloplus lucienae, new species, is described from the blackwater tributaries of the rio Negro basin. It is one of the few Myloplus species typically found in rapid areas of the Guiana Shield. It is diagnosed from congeners by the combination of an elongated body, small prepelvic spines that reach anteriorly just to the middle of the abdomen between verticals through pectoral- and pelvic-fin origin, and large scales on flanks resulting in smaller scale counts.

Pesquisas recentes têm evidenciado que os fatores específicos dos países, como os ambientes legal, institucional e econômico, influenciam a estrutura de capital das empresas. O presente estudo investiga os determinantes da estrutura de capital, utilizando painel de dados, para uma amostra de 388 empresas pertencentes às sete maiores economias da América Latina (México, Brasil, Argentina, Chile e Peru), no período 2001-2006. A partir de seis indicadores do nível de endividamento, foi evidenciado que os fatores específicos da firma - liquidez corrente, rentabilidade, market to book value e tamanho - apresentam os resultados mais significantes. A teoria do pecking order é a que melhor explica os resultados obtidos. Os resultados para os fatores macroeconômicos e institucionais não foram tão robustos, exceto para as variáveis crescimento do PIB, e em menor grau para as proxies sobre relevância do mercado de capitais, carga fiscal e tempo de abertura de um novo negócio.

Search in this study, to verify the relationship among the stock return, measured for the market-adjusted stock return, and four metrics of performance (Earning per Share, Return on Investment, Economic Value Added - EVA® and Operational Cash Flow) widely used by the companies and market. With a sample of 93 companies that operate in Brazil, excluding the financial ones, analyzed in the period between 2001 and 2007, using three econometric techniques: 1) Linear Regression Cross-Section, 2) Panel Data (Pooled) with heteroscedasticity corrected and 3) Panel Data with Aleatory Effects. The study tries to test the hypothesis about the importance of the performance indicators in the creation of shareholder value and the relevance to the EVA® front the other metric ones. In a general way, the results indicate a low power of explanation of the independent variable on the market-adjusted return. The indicator of performance that obtained the best results was the Operational Cash Flow followed by the Return on Investment and Earning per share. EVA® presented the worst result, rejecting the hypothesis about the superiority this performance measures that consider the cost of capital in the analysis of value creation.Se busca, en este estudio, verificar la relación entre el retorno de las acciones, mensurado por el retorno ajustado al mercado de la acción, y cuatro métricas de desempeño - Ganancia por Acción, Retorno sobre la Inversión, Valor Económico Adicionado (EVA®) y Flujo de Efectivo Operacional - ampliamente utilizadas por las empresas y por el mercado. En una muestra de 93 compañías abiertas non financieras que actúan en Brasil, analizada en el período entre 2001 y 2007, se utilizaron tres técnicas econométricas: Regresión Linear Cross-Section, Datos en Panel (Pooled) con heterocedasticidad corregida y Datos en Panel con Efectos al Azar. El estudio busca probar las hipótesis sobre la importancia de los indicadores de desempeño en la creación de valor para el accionista y la relevancia del EVA® ante otras métricas. En general, los resultados indican un bajo poder de explicación de las variables independientes sobre el retorno ajustado al mercado. El indicador de desempeño que obtuvo los mejores resultados fue el Flujo de Efectivo Operacional, seguido del Retorno sobre la Inversión y de la Ganancia por Acción. Dentre as quatro correntes teóricas analisadas (Trade off, Assimetria de informações, Pecking order e Agência), a teoria do Pecking order parece ser aquela que melhor explica os resultados obtidos para o Brasil e México. The adoption of efficient indicators of performance, aligned with the strategy for generation of superior economical value to the shareholders is of fundamental importance to success of the company. Based on an exploratory study, this article approaches two subjects of great relevance in the strategic context of the companies of services: systems of performance measurement and creation of value to the shareholders. For that, it contemplates a bibliographical research that tries to supply the theoretical presuppositions that base the exploratory research carried out in companies in service sector in Brazil, the main approach the study of the relationship between the use of performance measurement system in the strategic context and create value for its shareholders. This way, it was possible to infer that, through the visions and beliefs of its managers, the adoption of systems of acting measurement will be every time larger for the administrators, and the shareholders will fell satisfied in the attendance of their expectations regarding creation of value.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described from the middle and lower rio Xingu Basin, Para state, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by the combination of a large caudal peduncle blotch (largest in mature males), absence of humeral blotch, and largest teeth on dentary, inner premaxillary and maxillary relatively compressed with 6–9 cusps. The new species is compared to three other congeners with similar color pattern: Hyphessobrycon diastatos Dagosta, Marinho & Camelier 2014, Hy. negodagua Lima & Gerhard 2001, and Hy. parvellus Ellis 1911, and one species of Hemigrammus, He. rodwayi Durbin 1909.

Summary Length–weight relationships (LWR) are presented for 27 freshwater fish species representing 11 families captured in the Trombetas River, a clearwater left margin tributary of the Amazon River. The allometry coefficient (b) of the LWR (W = aTLb) ranged from 2.51 to 3.49, with a median value of 3.00. This study represents the first reference on LWR for 23 species and new records of maximum lengths for 15 species.

As conclusões das pesquisas sobre velocidade de ajustamento da estrutura de capital em direção ao alvo (SOA - Speed Of Adjustment) são muito divergentes quanto à velocidade medida. A maioria dos estudos mensura o SOA sem levar em conta certas especificidades das empresas ou de suas estratégias. Dividindo-se a amostra em empresas não adquirentes, adquirentes eventuais e adquirentes em série, o presente estudo tem por objetivo investigar o padrão de comportamento do SOA no período entre 1990 e 2010 para empresas norte-americanas. Considerando diversas variáveis de controle (restrições financeiras, oportunidades de crescimento, grau de alavancagem financeira e emissão/redução de dívidas e ações), tem-se uma investigação mais aprofundada de como as empresas não adquirentes, adquirentes eventuais e adquirentes em série ajustam sua estrutura de capital em direção ao alvo. São utilizadas como variáveis dependentes o endividamento a valor de mercado e endividamento líquido a valor de mercado. Verificou-se que os endividamentos médios para as três amostras são diferentes entre si, de forma estatisticamente significante. As empresas adquirentes em série possuem o menor endividamento, ao passo que as empresas não adquirentes são as mais endividadas, estando as empresas adquirentes eventuais em posição intermediária quanto ao endividamento. Este resultado sugere que as empresas possuem padrões de endividamentos distintos em função de sua política de investimentos relacionada à aquisições. É utilizado o modelo de ajustamento parcial para mensurar o SOA, empregando painel de dados dinâmico com a técnica do Método dos Momentos Generalizados (GMM) Sistêmico para se medir a velocidade de ajustamento da estrutura de capital de um período a outro. Esta técnica tem-se mostrado a menos enviesada e, assim, tem sido uma das mais utilizadas em trabalhos empíricos. Os resultados encontrados evidenciam que o padrão de comportamento do SOA pode depender da sua estratégia de investimentos em aquisições. O SOA das empresas adquirentes em série é constantemente menor em comparação ao SOA das empresas adquirentes, mesmo considerando as diversas variáveis de controle. O SOA das empresas não adquirentes permanece em posição intermediária. Esses resultados em conjunto sugerem que a folga financeira (baixo nível de endividamento e elevado saldo de caixa) seja um fator relevante para as adquirentes em série. Desse modo, tais empresas ajustam seu endividamento de forma mais lenta, em resposta a uma estrutura de capital mais adequada à sua política de investimentos. Por outro lado, as empresas adquirentes eventuais ajustam mais rapidamente sua estrutura de capital em função de sua política de aquisições esporádicas. The conclusions of surveys on speed of adjustment (SOA) towards the target capital structure are widely divergent as regards the measured speed. Most studies measure the SOA without taking into account certain specificities of the companies or of their strategies. Dividing the sample in non-acquiring companies, sporadic acquiring companies and serial acquirers, this study seeks to investigate the pattern of behavior of the SOA, in the period between 1990 and 2010 for North American companies. Considering several control variables (financial restrictions, growth opportunities, degree of financial leverage and issuance/reduction of debts and shares), we have a more in-depth investigation into how non-acquiring companies, sporadic acquiring companies and serial acquirers adjust their capital structure towards the target. Market leverage value and net market leverage are used as dependent variables. It was verified that the average debt levels for the three samples are different from one another, in a statistically significant manner. The serial acquirers have the lowest leverage, while non-acquiring companies have the highest leverage, with acquirers companies in an intermediate position on the leverage. This result suggests that companies have different debts patterns, due to its investment policy related to acquisitions. The partial adjustment model is employed to measure the SOA, using dynamic panel data with the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) Systemic to measure the speed of adjustment of the capital structure from one period to another. This technique has shown itself to be less biased and has thus been one of the most commonly used techniques in empirical studies. The results show evidence that the SOA may depend of its investment strategy. The SOA of serial acquirers companies is constantly lower than the SOA of acquiring companies, even considering all the control variables. The SOA of non-acquiring companies remains in an intermediate position. Taken together, these results suggest that the financial slack (low debt and high cash balance) is a relevant factor to serial acquirers. Thus such companies adjust their debt more slowly in response to a more adequate capital structure to their investment policy. On the other hand, sporadic acquiring companies adjust faster its capital structure, due to its sporadic acquisition policy.

A new miniature species of the family Characidae from Marajó Island, Pará State, Brazil is described and assigned to the genus Tyttobrycon. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners primarily by having multicuspid teeth on jaws, and additionally by having the combination of 5-7 premaxillary teeth, dorsal fin only with scattered melanophores and the presence of an adipose fin. Uma espécie nova miniatura da família Characidae da Ilha do Marajó, Pará, Brasil, é descrita e atribuída ao gênero Tyttobrycon. A espécie nova pode ser diferenciada dos congêneres principalmente por ter dentes multicuspidados nas maxilas e adicionalmente por ter a combinação de 5-7 dentes no pré maxilar, nadadeira dorsal apenas com pequenos cromatóforos escuros dispersos e presença de nadadeira adiposa.

Myloplus lucienae, new species, is described from the blackwater tributaries of the rio Negro basin. It is one of the few Myloplus species typically found in rapid areas of the Guiana Shield. It is diagnosed from congeners by the combination of an elongated body, small prepelvic spines that reach anteriorly just to the middle of the abdomen between verticals through pectoral- and pelvic-fin origin, and large scales on flanks resulting in smaller scale counts.

O objetivo principal deste trabalho consiste em analisar os principais determinantes da estrutura de maturidade das dívidas, à luz das teorias baseadas nas imperfeições do mercado, bem como compreender o perfil do endividamento das empresas brasileiras de grande porte, detentoras de dívidas bancárias e emissoras de debêntures. A amostra consiste em 38 empresas brasileiras de grande porte emissoras de dívidas, analisadas no período entre 2002 e 2007, sendo utilizadas as técnicas econométricas de regressão cross-section e dados em painel, a fim de testar as hipóteses sobre a estrutura de maturidade das dívidas das empresas brasileiras. As variáveis Oportunidades de crescimento (OPOCR), Receita operacional líquida (LNROL), Alavancagem (ALAV), Maturidade dos ativos (MATA) e Rating Alto (RATA) apresentaram resultados estatisticamente significantes. Todavia, o sinal apresentado foi o contrário, divergindo do proposto pela teoria. Foi observado que, analisando à luz do referencial teórico levantado, apenas a variável Alíquota efetiva de tributos (TAXE) influencia o comportamento da maturidade das dívidas. The main objective of this study is to analyze the main factors for the maturity structure of debt based on theories relating to market imperfections, and also to understand the debt profile of large Brazilian companies, owners of bank debt and issuers of debentures. The sample consists of 38 large Brazilian companies, issuers of debt, analyzed between 2002 and 2007, using econometric cross-section techniques and panel data to test the hypotheses concerning the maturity structure of Brazilian company debt. The Growth opportunity (OPOCR), Net operating revenue (LNROL), Leverage (ALAV), Asset maturity (MATA) and High Rating (RATA) variables provided statistically significant results. However, the opposite sign was presented, diverging from the theory's hypotheses. Analyzing this based on the theoretical reference raised, it was observed that only the Effective tax rate (TAXE) variable influences debt maturity behavior.

Este estudo tem como referência os trabalhos realizados por Fama e French (2002), desenvolvido com dados de empresas norte-americanas, e por Brito e Silva (2003), elaborado com dados de empresas brasileiras. O trabalho testou as previsões das teorias de trade-off e pecking order sobre endividamento e payout, utilizando a metodologia de Fama e McBeth (1973). Os resultados demonstraram que as empresas brasileiras aumentaram a meta de remuneração, porém ainda distribuem uma proporção pequena dos lucros, se comparados ao padrão americano, apesar de a legislação brasileira ser bastante favorável. Os resultados indicam que o payout é negativamente relacionado com as oportunidades de investimento e que os dividendos não sofrem variação de curto prazo para acomodar os investimentos, conforme defende a teoria do pecking order. A lucratividade demonstrou ser relevante na determinação da política de endividamento, o que indica que as empresas mais lucrativas são menos endividadas, confirmando a pecking order. Além disso, a variável "tamanho" mostrou ser significativa na política de endividamento, o que corrobora as teorias do pecking order e trade-off. This study has as reference the works by Fama and French (2002) accomplished with data of North American companies and by Brito and Silva (2003) accomplished with data of Brazilian companies. This work tested the forecasts of the trade-off and pecking order theories on indebtedness and payout, using the methodology by Fama and McBeth (1973). The results demonstrated that Brazilian companies increased the remuneration goal, however they still distribute a small proportion of the profits, if compared to the American pattern, in spite of the Brazilian legislation to be quite favorable. The results indicate that the payout is negatively related with the investment opportunities and that the dividends don't suffer variation of short period to accommodate the investments, as it defends the theory of the pecking order. The profitability demonstrated to be relevant in the determination of the indebtedness politics, what indicates that the most profitable companies are less indebted confirming the pecking order. Besides, the variable "size" demonstrated to be significant in the indebted politics, corroborating pecking order and trade-off theories.

Planejar e controlar sao funcoes inerentes ao processo administrativo, sendo que existem determinados procedimentos basicos que norteiam estas atividades. O conjunto destes procedimentos compoe o modelo tradicional de planejamento e controle. Contudo, e crescente o questionamento no meio academico e empresarial, sobre a efetividade do modelo tradicional de planejamento e controle. Ao mesmo tempo vem surgindo metodologias alternativas para a execucao de tais funcoes, que sugerem uma analise critica dos procedimentos tradicionais, questionando a validade dos mesmos quanto a geracao de valor. Este estudo, conduzido junto a uma amostra de empresas brasileiras com acoes negociadas na Bovespa, objetivou evidenciar uma relacao estatistica entre a existencia de um programa sistematico de planejamento e controle (budgeting), e a obtencao de um resultado financeiro operacional superior. Paralelamente tambem foi pesquisada a aderencia de novas metodologias bem como o grau de satisfacao das empresas em relacao aos seus procedimentos de planejamento e controle.

We present new records of Astyanax argyrimarginatus Garutti, 1999 for the Xingu basin and distribution extension of approximately 1,000 km towards north-west in Tocantins-Araguaia basin. The species was previously known only from tributary of upper rio Araguaia, Goiás and Mato-Grosso states, Brazil.

Inúmeros estudos têm sido feitos procurando mensurar o componente de risco envolvido no retorno esperado em investimentos de capital. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de comparar os resultados obtidos nas diversas metodologias de cálculo do Capital Asset Princing Model (CAPM) com os resultados efetivos apresentados pelas ações de empresas do mercado brasileiro no período de 2000 a 2004. Esses cálculos utilizam quatro metodologias de determinação do índice beta e três metodologias de cálculo do CAPM, em oito cenários macroeconômicos distintos. A pesquisa buscou determinar relações de igualdade entre o conjunto dosdiversos retornos esperados obtidos e o efetivo comportamento de retornos dos ativos estudados em diversos cenários. O estudo utilizou o método estatístico Teste de Hipóteses de Diferença de Médias de duas Populações para comparar as diversas séries de retornos esperados obtidos, com os respectivos retornos efetivos. Os resultados obtidos sugerem a indicação de algumas metodologias e cenários como ferramentas válidas na predição de retornos futuros desses ativos, notadamente quando introduzidas variáveis que considerem o risco-país na sua mensuração.

Background Acute aortic dissection is one of the most dreaded clinical conditions during pregnancy. The limited experience reported in the literature does not allow the determination of guidelines for surgical management of aortic dissection in these cases. In this case presentation we successfully treated a 27-year-old woman with Marfan syndrome in the 36th week of pregnancy with acute type A aortic dissection, who underwent aortic repair with the fetus remaining in situ.
