Search

TESS Sector 62 observations include physical orbits 131 and 132 of the spacecraft around the Earth. Data collection was paused for a total of 0.63 days to download data. Data were downloaded approximately every seven days, once near apogee of each orbit and once near perigee. In total, there are 25.08 days of science data collected in Sector 62.

TESS Sector 59 observations include physical orbits 125 and 126 of the spacecraft around the Earth. Data collection was paused for a total of 0.63 days to download data. Data were downloaded approximately every seven days, once near apogee of each orbit and once near perigee. Note that the Sector 59 data were briefly made available on 2023 January 18–19 before an issue was identified that required reprocessing. Data have since been reprocessed. The reprocessing has a minimal impact on the final light curves, but resulted in a different set of TCEs than initially released. Users should re-download the data if retrieved before January 19th. In total, there are 25.79 days of science data collected in Sector 59.

These Data Release Notes provide information on the processing and export of data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). This data release is a combined, multi-sector transit search only. The underlying data products from individual observing sectors have been previously released. The data products included in this data release are the Data Validation (DV) reports, time series, and associated xml files for the threshold crossing events (TCEs) found by searching a combined data set including data from multiple observing sectors.

In this paper we present a catalog of 4584 eclipsing binaries observed during the first two years (26 sectors) of the TESS survey. We discuss selection criteria for eclipsing binary candidates, detection of hitherto unknown eclipsing systems, determination of the ephemerides, the validation and triage process, and the derivation of heuristic estimates for the ephemerides. Instead of keeping to the widely used discrete classes, we propose a binary star morphology classification based on a dimensionality reduction algorithm. Finally, we present statistical properties of the sample, we qualitatively estimate completeness, and we discuss the results. The work presented here is organized and performed within the TESS Eclipsing Binary Working Group, an open group of professional and citizen scientists; we conclude by describing ongoing work and future goals for the group. We present the results of a uniform search for additional planets around all stars with confirmed hot Jupiters observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in its Cycle 1 survey of the southern ecliptic hemisphere. Our search comprises 184 total planetary systems with confirmed hot Jupiters with Rp > 8 R⊕ and orbital period <10 days. The Transit Least Squares algorithm was utilized to search for periodic signals that may have been missed by other planet search pipelines. While we recovered 169 of these confirmed hot Jupiters, our search yielded no new statistically validated planetary candidates in the parameter space searched (P < 14 days). A lack of planet candidates nearby hot Jupiters in the TESS data supports results from previous transit searches of each individual system, now down to the photometric precision of TESS. This is consistent with expectations from a high-eccentricity migration formation scenario, but additional formation indicators are needed for definitive confirmation. We injected transit signals into the light curves of the hot Jupiter sample to probe the pipeline's sensitivity to the target parameter space, finding a dependence proportional to ${R}_{p}^{2.32}{P}^{-0.88}$ for planets within 0.3 ≤ Rp ≤ 4 R⊕ and 1 ≤ P ≤ 14 days. A statistical analysis accounting for this sensitivity provides a median and 90% confidence interval of ${7.3}_{-7.3}^{+15.2} \% $ for the rate of hot Jupiters with nearby companions in this target parameter space. This study demonstrates how TESS uniquely enables comprehensive searches for nearby planetary companions to nearly all the known hot Jupiters.

We report the discovery of an ultrahot Jupiter with an extremely short orbital period of 0.67247414 ± 0.00000028 days (∼16 hr). The 1.347 ± 0.047 RJup planet, initially identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, orbits TOI-2109 (TIC 392476080)—a T(eff) ∼ 6500 K F-type star with a mass of 1.447 ± 0.077 Mꙩ, a radius of 1.698 ± 0.060 Rꙩ, and a rotational velocity of v sin i =81.9 ± 1.7 km/s. The planetary nature of TOI-2109b was confirmed through radial-velocity measurements, which yielded a planet mass of 5.02 ± 0.75 M(Jup). Analysis of the Doppler shadow in spectroscopic transit observations indicates a well-aligned system, with a sky-projected obliquity of λ = 1.°7± 1.°7. From the TESS full-orbit light curve, we measured a secondary eclipse depth of 731 ± 46 ppm, as well as phase-curve variations from the planet's longitudinal brightness modulation and ellipsoidal distortion of the host star. Combining the TESS-band occultation measurement with a K(s)-band secondary eclipse depth (2012 ± 80 ppm) derived from ground-based observations, we find that the dayside emission of TOI-2109b is consistent with a brightness temperature of 3631 ± 69 K, making it the second hottest exoplanet hitherto discovered. By virtue of its extreme irradiation and strong planet–star gravitational interaction, TOI-2109b is an exceptionally promising target for intensive follow-up studies using current and near-future telescope facilities to probe for orbital decay, detect tidally driven atmospheric escape, and assess the impacts of H2 dissociation and recombination on the global heat transport.

We report the first discovery of a transiting circumbinary planet detected from a single sector of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. During Sector 21, the planet TIC 172900988b transited the primary star and then five days later it transited the secondary star. The binary is itself eclipsing, with a period P ≈ 19.7 days and an eccentricity e ≈ 0.45. Archival data from ASAS-SN, Evryscope, KELT, and SuperWASP reveal a prominent apsidal motion of the binary orbit, caused by the dynamical interactions between the binary and the planet. A comprehensive photodynamical analysis of the TESS, archival and follow-up data yields stellar masses and radii of M(1) = 1.2384 ± 0.0007 Mꙩ and R(1) = 1.3827 ± 0.0016 Rꙩ for the primary and M(2) = 1.2019 ± 0.0007 Mꙩ and R(2) = 1.3124 ± 0.0012 Rꙩ for the secondary. The radius of the planet is R(3) = 11.25 ± 0.44 Rꚛ (1.004 ± 0.039R(Jup)). The planet’s mass and orbital properties are not uniquely determined—there are six solutions with nearly equal likelihood. Specifically, we find that the planet’s mass is in the range of 824 ≲ M3 ≲ 981 Mꚛ (2.65 ≲ M3 ≲ 3.09M(Jup)), its orbital period could be 188.8, 190.4, 194.0, 199.0, 200.4, or 204.1 days, and the eccentricity is between 0.02 and 0.09. At V = 10.141 mag, the system is accessible for high-resolution spectroscopic observations, e.g., the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect and transit spectroscopy.

The format and content of these data products are documented in the Science Data Products Description Document (SDPDD)1. The SPOC science algorithms are based heavily on those of the Kepler Mission science pipeline, and are described in the Kepler Data Processing Handbook (Jenkins, 2020)2. The Data Validation algorithms are documented in Twicken et al. (2018) and Li et al. (2019). The TESS Instrument Handbook (Vanderspek et al., 2018) contains more information about the TESS instrument design, detector layout, data properties, and mission operations. The TESS Mission is funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

We present the discovery and characterization of five hot and warm Jupiters—TOI-628 b(TIC 281408474; HD288842), TOI-640 b(TIC 147977348), TOI-1333 b (TIC 395171208, BD+47 3521A), TOI-1478 b (TIC409794137), and TOI-1601 b (TIC 139375960)—based on data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS). The five planets were identified from the full-frame images and were confirmed through a series of photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations by the TESS Follow-up Observing Program Working Group. The planets are all Jovian size (RP=1.01–1.77RJ) and have masses that range from 0.85 to 6.33MJ. The host stars of these systems have F and G spectral types (5595Teff 6460 K)and are all relatively bright (9.51.7RJ, possibly a result of its host star’s evolution) and resides on an orbit with a period longer than 5 days. TOI-628 b is the most massive, hot Jupiter discovered to date by TESS with a measured mass of-+6.310.300.28MJ and a statistically significant, nonzero orbital eccentricity of e=-+0.0740.0220.021. This planet would not have had enough time to circularize through tidal forces from our analysis, suggesting that it might be remnant eccentricity from its migration. The longest-period planet in this sample, TOI-1478 b (P=10.18 days), is a warm Jupiter in a circular orbit around a near-solar analog. NASA’s TESS mission is continuing to increase the sample of well-characterized hot and warm Jupiters, complementing its primary mission goals.

We report the discovery of a sextuply eclipsing sextuple star system from TESS data, TIC 168789840, also known as TYC 7037-89-1, the first known sextuple system consisting of three eclipsing binaries. The target was observed in Sectors 4 and 5 during Cycle 1, with light curves extracted from TESS Full Frame Image data. It was also previously observed by the WASP survey and ASAS-SN. The system consists of three gravitationally bound eclipsing binaries in a hierarchical structure of an inner quadruple system with an outer binary subsystem. Follow up observations from several different observatories were conducted as a means of determining additional parameters. The system was resolved by speckle interferometry with a 0 42 separation between the inner quadruple and outer binary, inferring an estimated outer period of ∼2 kyr. It was determined that the fainter of the two resolved components is an 8.217 day eclipsing binary, which orbits the inner quadruple that contains two eclipsing binaries with periods of 1.570 days and 1.306 days. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis of the stellar parameters has shown that the three binaries of TIC 168789840 are “triplets,” as each binary is quite similar to the others in terms of mass, radius, and Teff. As a consequence of its rare composition, structure, and orientation, this object can provide important new insight into the formation, dynamics, and evolution of multiple star systems. Future observations could reveal if the intermediate and outer orbital planes are all aligned with the planes of the three inner eclipsing binaries.

TESS Sector 31 observations include physical orbits 69 and 70 of the spacecraft around the Earth. Data collection was paused for 1.40 days between the orbits to download data. Astar tracker anomaly occurred at UTC 2020-11-16 10:37, which led to the instrument being turned off. As a result, the data collection period in orbit 70 ended 2.08 days earlier than scheduled; there is no other effect on the data. The cameras were turned on and returned to normal operations on 2020-11-20, at the beginning of Sector 32. In total, there are 24.03days of science data collected in Sector 31

We report the discovery and confirmation of two new hot Jupiters discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS): TOI 564 b and TOI 905 b. The transits of these two planets were initially observed by TESS with orbital periods of 1.651 and 3.739 days, respectively. We conducted follow-up observations of each system from the ground, including photometry in multiple filters, speckle interferometry, and radial velocity measurements. For TOI 564 b, our global fitting revealed a classical hot Jupiter with a mass of-+1.4630.0960.10MJand a radius of-+1.020.290.71RJ. Also a classical hot Jupiter, TOI 905 b has a mass of-+0.6670.0410.042MJand radius of-+1.1710.0510.053RJ. Both planets orbit Sun-like, moderately bright, mid-G dwarf stars with V11. While TOI 905 b fully transits its star, we found that TOI 564 b has a very high transit impact parameter of-+0.9940.0490.083, making it one of only∼20 known systems to exhibit a grazing transit and one of the brightest host stars among them. Therefore, TOI 564 b is one of the most attractive systems to search for additional nontransiting, smaller planets by exploiting the sensitivity of grazing transits to small changes in inclination and transit duration over a timescale of several years.

We present the discovery of two new 10 day period giant planets from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission, whose masses were precisely determined using a wide diversity of ground-based facilities. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b have similar radii (0.99 ± 0.01 R(J) and 1.07 ± 0.02 R(J), respectively), and orbital periods (10.3311 days and 10.6266 days, respectively), but significantly different masses (1.53 ± 0.03 M(J) versus 0.95 ± 0.07 M(J), respectively). Both planets orbit metal-rich stars ([Fe/HG] = +0.26 ± 0.05 dex and [Fe/H] = +0.24 ± 0.05 for TOI-481 and TOI-892, respectively) but at different evolutionary stages. TOI-481 is a M(*) = 1.14 ± 0.02 Mꙩ, R(*) = 1.66 ± 0.02 Rꙩ G-type star (T(eff) = 5735 ± 72 K), that with an age of 6.7 Gyr, is in the turn-off point of the main sequence. TOI-892 on the other hand, is a F-type dwarf star (T(eff) = 6261 ± 80 K), which has a mass of M(*) = 1.28 ± 0.03 Mꙩ and a radius of R(*) = 1.39 ± 0.02 Rꙩ. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b join the scarcely populated region of transiting gas giants with orbital periods longer than 10 days, which is important to constrain theories of the formation and structure of hot Jupiters.

TESS data release 30 (DR30) provides reprocessed data products of Sector 14 to 19. The updated data products were generated using version 4.0 of the science processing pipeline and conform to the final set of data anomaly flags defined over the last two years of TESS data analysis and pipeline development. Data release 33 (DR33) corresponds to a multisector search for transiting planets in the same reprocessed data. A detailed description of the changes in the data products in DR30 and DR33 is discussed in§2, and a brief list of changes is summarized here: The timestamps for 2 minute cadence and FFI data are more accurate. The differences between reprocessed data and previous data releases are less than 2.0 seconds in all cases. Photometric apertures were increased in size for targets with T mag<11. Three new Data Anomaly Flags were added to mitigate the effects of scattered light:–Cadences with strong scattered light signals or saturation effects that corrupt the calibration data are flagged and removed from analysis (bit 15, value 16384, “Bad Calibration Exclude”).–Scattered light data anomaly flags are customized for each target, and flagged automatically based on the local background level (bit 13, value 4096, ”Scattered light flag”).–Cadences with insufficient targets to derive cotrending basis vectors are flagged and the PDCSAP FLUX light curves are set to NULL at these times (bit 16, value 32768, “Insufficient Targets for Error Correction Exclude”). The planet search of the reprocessed light curves produced a different set of TCEs from the original processed data. Although there is a high degree of overlap between the original and reprocessed data (∼83% of targets produced TCEs in common), new TCEs were produced in DR30 and not every TCE from previous data releases was recovered. The same is true of the multisector search results from DR33 compared to DR28

We present Spitzer 4.5 μm observations of the transit of TOI-700 d, a habitable-zone Earth-sized planet in a multiplanet system transiting a nearby M-dwarf star (TIC 150428135, 2MASS J06282325–6534456). TOI-700 d has a radius of 1.144 (+0.062, -0.061)Rꚛ and orbits within its host star’s conservative habitable zone with a period of 37.42 days (T(eq)~269 K). TOI-700 also hosts two small inner planets (R(b)=1.037(+0.065, -0.064) Rꚛ and R(c)=2.65(+0.16,-0.15) Rꚛ with periods of 9.98 and 16.05 days, respectively. Our Spitzer observations confirm the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) detection of TOI-700 d and remove any remaining doubt that it is a genuine planet. We analyze the Spitzer light curve combined with the 11 sectors of TESS observations and a transit of TOI-700 c from the LCOGT network to determine the full system parameters. Although studying the atmosphere of TOI-700 d is not likely feasible with upcoming facilities, it may be possible to measure the mass of TOI-700 d using state-of-the-art radial velocity (RV) instruments (expected RV semiamplitude of ∼70 cm/s).

We present the discovery of three sub-Neptune-sized planets transiting the nearby and bright Sun-like star HD 191939 (TIC 269701147, TOI 1339), a Ks = 7.18 mag G8 V dwarf at a distance of only 54 pc. We validate the planetary nature of the transit signals by combining 5 months of data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite with follow-up ground-based photometry, archival optical images, radial velocities, and high angular resolution observations. The three sub-Neptunes have similar radii (R(b)=3.42(+0.11,-0.11), R(c)=3.23(+0.11,-0.11), and R(d)=3.16(+0.11,-0.11 Rꚛ), and their orbits are consistent with a stable, circular, and coplanar architecture near mean-motion resonances of 1:3 and 3:4 (P(b) = 8.88, P(c) = 28.58, and P(d) = 38.35 days). The HD 191939 system is an excellent candidate for precise mass determinations of the planets with high-resolution spectroscopy due to the host star's brightness and low chromospheric activity. Moreover, the system's compact and near-resonant nature can provide an independent way to measure planetary masses via transit timing variations while also enabling dynamical and evolutionary studies. Finally, as a promising target for multiwavelength transmission spectroscopy of all three planets' atmospheres, HD 191939 can offer valuable insight into multiple sub-Neptunes born from a protoplanetary disk that may have resembled that of the early Sun.

Small planets on close-in orbits tend to exhibit envelope mass fractions of either effectively zero or up to a few percent depending on their size and orbital period. Models of thermally driven atmospheric mass loss and of terrestrial planet formation in a gas-poor environment make distinct predictions regarding the location of this rocky/nonrocky transition in period–radius space. Here we present the confirmation of TOI-1235 b (P = 3.44 days, r(p)=1.738 (+0.087, -0.076) Rꚛ), a planet whose size and period are intermediate between the competing model predictions, thus making the system an important test case for emergence models of the rocky/nonrocky transition around early M dwarfs (R(s) = 0.630 ± 0.015 Rꙩ, M(s) = 0.640 ± 0.016 Mꙩ}$). We confirm the TESS planet discovery using reconnaissance spectroscopy, ground-based photometry, high-resolution imaging, and a set of 38 precise radial velocities (RVs) from HARPS-N and HIRES. We measure a planet mass of 6.91 (+0.75, -0.85) Mꚛ, which implies an iron core mass fraction of 20 (+15,-12)% in the absence of a gaseous envelope. The bulk composition of TOI-1235 b is therefore consistent with being Earth-like, and we constrain an H/He envelope mass fraction to be <0.5% at 90% confidence. Our results are consistent with model predictions from thermally driven atmospheric mass loss but not with gas-poor formation, suggesting that the former class of processes remains efficient at sculpting close-in planets around early M dwarfs. Our RV analysis also reveals a strong periodicity close to the first harmonic of the photometrically determined stellar rotation period that we treat as stellar activity, despite other lines of evidence favoring a planetary origin P= 21.8(+0.9, _0.8) days, m(p)sin i= 13.0 (+3.8,-5.3) Mꚛ) that cannot be firmly ruled out by our data.
