Abstract

Objectives: To report the long‐term outcomes from a longitudinal psychosocial study that forms part of the 'Identification of Men with a genetic predisposition to ProstAte Cancer: Targeted Screening in men at higher genetic risk and controls' (IMPACT) study. The IMPACT study is a multi‐national study of targeted prostate cancer (PrCa) screening in individuals with a known germline pathogenic variant (GPV) in either the BReast CAncer gene 1 (BRCA1) or the BReast CAncer gene 2 (BRCA2). Subjects and Methods: Participants enrolled in the IMPACT study were invited to complete a psychosocial questionnaire prior to each annual screening visit for a minimum of 5 years. The questionnaire included questions on sociodemographics and the following measures: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Impact of Event Scale, 36‐item Short‐Form Health Survey, Memorial Anxiety Scale for PrCa, Cancer Worry Scale, risk perception and knowledge. Results: A total of 760 participants completed questionnaires: 207 participants with GPV in BRCA1, 265 with GPV in BRCA2 and 288 controls (non‐carriers from families with a known GPV). We found no evidence of clinically concerning levels of general or cancer‐specific distress or poor health‐related quality of life in the cohort as a whole. Individuals in the control group had significantly less worry about PrCa compared with the carriers; however, all mean scores were low and within reported general population norms, where available. BRCA2 carriers with previously high prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) levels experience a small but significant increase in PrCa anxiety (P = 0.01) and PSA‐specific anxiety (P < 0.001). Cancer risk perceptions reflected information provided during genetic counselling and participants had good levels of knowledge, although this declined over time. Conclusion: This is the first study to report the longitudinal psychosocial impact of a targeted PrCa screening programme for BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers. The results reassure that an annual PSA‐based screening programme does not have an adverse impact on psychosocial health or health‐related quality of life in these higher‐risk individuals. 4. Animal Farm : An Analysis of Interspecies Interactions and Responses to Anthropogenic Influences at the UBC Farm

Abstract

The most significant danger to animals around the world is the loss of their habitat, which is occurring due to the growth and expansion of the human population. The construction of new buildings such as the Brock Commons Residence at the University of British Columbia (UBC)are occurring near a mixed forest area can disrupt and fragment natural habitats, posing a threat to biodiversity for the local wildlife. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of human activities on animals and their habitats at the UBC Farm. To achieve this, we analyze camera trap data to investigate the spatial distribution of mammals and study the interactions between different species and behavioural trends through the changes in population. The primary aim of the research is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of how human actions affect animals in this particular area. Camera trap data has been collected since 2019. The camera trap data was sorted into different categories based on habitat and whether it was a market or non-market day. An occupancy model was then employed to make predictions about the likelihood of occurrence. Our findings revealed, coyotes were predominantly detected in the Annual Production Areas which is an area where human activities occur such as farming and market days, whereas squirrels and raccoons were more commonly found in the Mixed Forest Area. Furthermore, the study revealed that the interactions between coyotes and their prey were consistent across different habitats, however, there was no observable impact of human presence on mammal behaviour. Despite this outcome, our research findings indicate that mammal habitats are affected by human activities such as construction projects. The report puts forth several recommendations aimed at enhancing future research to produce definitive findings on mammal behaviour trends. These include facilitating access to the photo database to enable the use of machine learning algorithms for animal tagging, gathering covariate data on external factors that affect mammal behaviour, exploring the impact of noise pollution on mammal behaviour, and increasing the volume of data to improve detection rates for less frequently observed animals. To achieve these goals, the report suggests deploying additional camera traps, positioning them strategically, and extending their observation period. The study has the potential to enhance ecological and environmental sustainability at UBC, and hope that the insights gained can help shape development projects at UBC to minimize their impact on local biodiversity.

Abstract

Second semester University: Uppsala University, The right to health and its underlying determinants are central for the realisation and enjoyment of other human rights, and these rights are increasingly impacted upon by business enterprises and their activities. At present, no international legislation exists which specifically targets the impact of these business activities upon the human right to health, but the proposed Framework Convention on Global Health presents a significant opportunity in this area. Previous literature surrounding the FCGH has predominantly focused on whether such a document is necessary and the nature of its contributions to the field of global health. This thesis focuses however specifically on the potential for an FCGH to impact the actions of businesses in the underlying determinants of health, using qualitative research and analysis. Following an examination of how the activities of business enterprises impact the underlying determinants of health, the FCGH is analysed and conclusions are drawn highlighting its utility as a human rights instrument with a focus on ending inequities on health.

Abstract

Discourses of ‘choice’ are routinely involved in sexual and reproductive rights’ advocacy. In this article, we offer a discursive psychological examination of how ‘choice’ is oriented to, in online deliberations on the ongoing movement for abortion rights in Ireland. Comment posters treated ‘choice’ as involving outcomes of and motives for choosing, in negotiating legitimacy of women’s rights to choose. These accompanied alternative versions of women, either as independent or as intimately bound up with pregnancy/motherhood, which were flexibly used in negotiation legitimacy of women’s rights to ‘choice’ in abortion practices.
