Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) are a popular class of regression models when the responses follow a distribution in the exponential family. In real data the variability often deviates from the relation imposed by the exponential family distribution, which results in over- or underdispersion. Dispersion effects may even vary in the data. Such datasets do not follow the traditional GLM distributional assumptions, leading to unreliable inference. Therefore, the family of double exponential distributions has been proposed, which models both the mean and the dispersion as a function of covariates in the GLM framework. Since standard maximum likelihood inference is highly susceptible to the possible presence of outliers, we propose the robust double exponential (RDE) estimator. Asymptotic properties and robustness of the RDE estimator are discussed. A generalized robust quasi-deviance measure is introduced which constitutes the basis for a stable robust test. Simulations for binomial and Poisson models show the excellent performance of the RDE estimator and corresponding robust tests. Penalized versions of the RDE estimator are developed for sparse estimation with high-dimensional data and for flexible estimation via generalized additive models (GAMs). Real data may expose a larger (or smaller) variability than assumed in an exponential family modeling, the basis of Generalized linear models and additive models. To analyze such data, smooth estimation of the mean and the dispersion function has been introduced in extended generalized additive models using Psplines techniques. This methodology is further explored here by allowing for the modeling of some of the covariates parametrically and some nonparametrically. The main contribution in this article is a simulation study investigating the finite-sample performance of the P-spline estimation technique in these extended models, including comparisons with a standard generalized additive modeling approach, as well as with a hierarchical modeling approach. We study joint nonparametric estimators of the mean and the dispersion functions in extended double exponential family models. The starting point is the exponential family and the generalized linear models setting. The extended models allow for both overdispersion and underdispersion, or even a combination of both. We simultaneously estimate the dispersion function and the mean function by using P-splines with a difference type of penalty to avoid overfitting. Special attention is given to the smoothing parameter selection as well as to implementation issues. The performance of the method is investigated via simulations. To circumvent the computational complexity of likelihood inference in generalized mixed models that assume linear or more general additive regression models of covariate effects, Laplace's approximations to multiple integrals in the likelihood have been commonly used without addressing the issue of adequacy of the approximations for individuals with sparse observations. In this article, we propose a hybrid estimation scheme to address this issue. The likelihoods for subjects with sparse observations use Monte Carlo approximations involving importance sampling, while Laplace's approximation is used for the likelihoods of other subjects that satisfy a certain diagnostic check on the adequacy of Laplace's approximation. Because of its computational tractability, the proposed approach allows flexible modeling of covariate effects by using regression splines and model selection procedures for knot and variable selection. Its computational and statistical advantages are illustrated by simulation and by application to longitudinal data from a fecundity study of fruit flies, for which overdispersion is modeled via a double exponential family.
