Measurement-based quantum computing offers a promising route towards scalable, universal photonic quantum computation. This approach relies on the deterministic and efficient generation of photonic graph states in which many photons are mutually entangled with various topologies. Recently, deterministic sources of graph states have been demonstrated with quantum emitters in both the optical and microwave domains. In this work, we demonstrate deterministic and reconfigurable graph state generation with optical solid-state integrated quantum emitters. Specifically, we use a single semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity to generate caterpillar graph states, the most general type of graph state that can be produced with a single emitter. By using fast detuned optical pulses, we achieve full control over the spin state, enabling us to vary the entanglement topology at will. We perform quantum state tomography of two successive photons, measuring Bell state fidelities up to 0.80$\pm$0.04 and concurrences up to 0.69$\pm$0.09, while maintaining high photon indistinguishability. This simple optical scheme, compatible with commercially available quantum dot-based single photon sources, brings us a step closer to fault-tolerant quantum computing with spins and photons.

The capability of magnons to hybridize and strongly couple with diverse excitations offers a promising avenue for realizing and controlling emergent properties that hold significant potential for applications in devices, circuits, and information processing. In this letter, we present recent theoretical and experimental developments in magnon-based hybrid systems, focusing on the combination of magnon excitation in an antiferromagnet with other excitations, namely plasmons in a topological insulator, phonons in a 2D AFM, and photons. The existence of THz frequency magnons, plasmons, and phonons makes magnon-based hybrid systems particularly appealing for high-operating-speed devices. In this context, we explore several directions to advance magnon hybrid systems, including strong coupling between a surface plasmon and magnon polariton in a TI/AFM bilayer, a giant spin Nernst effect induced by magnon phonon coupling in 2D AFMs, and control of magnon-photon coupling using spin torque.

We analyze theoretically the origin of the spin Nernst and thermal Hall effects in FePS3 as a realization of two-dimensional antiferromagnet (2D AFM). We find that a strong magnetoelastic coupling, hybridizing magnetic excitation (magnon) and elastic excitation (phonon), combined with time-reversal-symmetry-breaking, results in a Berry curvature hotspots in the region of anticrossing between the two distinct hybridized bands. Furthermore, large spin Berry curvature emerges due to interband transitions between two magnon-like bands, where a small energy gap is induced by magnetoelastic coupling between such bands that are energetically distant from anticrossing of hybridized bands. These nonzero Berry curvatures generate topological transverse transport (i.e., the thermal Hall effect) of hybrid excitations, dubbed magnon-polaron, as well as of spin (i.e., the spin Nernst effect) carried by them, in response to applied longitudinal temperature gradient. We investigate the dependence of the spin Nernst and thermal Hall conductivities on the applied magnetic field and temperature, unveiling very large spin Nernst conductivity even at zero magnetic field. We present a combined Brillouin light scattering and micromagnetic simulation investigation of the magnetic-field dependent spin-wave spectra in a hybrid structure made of permalloy (NiFe) artificial spin-ice (ASI) systems, composed of stadium-shaped nanoislands, deposited on the top of an unpatterned permalloy film with a nonmagnetic spacer layer. The thermal spin-wave spectra were recorded by Brillouin light scattering (BLS) as a function of the magnetic field applied along the symmetry direction of the ASI sample. Magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry was used to measure the hysteresis loops in the same orientation as the BLS measurements. The frequency and intensity of several spin-wave modes detected by BLS were measured as a function of the applied magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations enabled us to identify the modes in terms of their frequency and spatial symmetry and to extract information about the existence and strength of the dynamic coupling, relevant only to a few modes of a given hybrid system. Using this approach, we suggest a way to understand if dynamic coupling between ASI and film modes is present or not, with interesting implications for the development of future three-dimensional magnonic applications and devices.

Collective vibrations of proteins, rotations of small molecules, excitations of high-temperature superconductors, and electronic transitions in semiconductor nanostructures occur with characteristic frequencies between 1 and 10 THz. Applications to medicine, communications, security and other fields are emerging. However, mapping the coldest parts of the universe has been the largest driver for developing THz detectors. The result is a family of exquisitely-sensitive detectors requiring sub-4K temperatures. For earthbound THz science and technology, sensitivity remains important but many applications require high speed and operating temperatures. Room-temperature Schottky diodes enable some of these applications. Here we demonstrate a new type of detector in which THz radiation excites a collective oscillation of ~25,000 electrons between two gates in a microscopic four terminal transistor. The energy dissipates into other modes of the electron gas, warming it and changing the source-drain resistance. The detector shows amplifier-limited rise times near 1 ns and has detected THz laser radiation at temperatures up to 120K. The frequency of the collective oscillation tunes with small gate voltages. The first-generation tunable antenna-coupled intersubband Terahertz (TACIT) detectors tune between 1.5 and 2 THz with voltages <2V., Comment: This paper was submitted to Nature in 2005, was not accepted, and was not submitted to other journals subsequently. Lateral quantum dot molecules consist of at least two closely-spaced InGaAs quantum dots arranged such that the axis connecting the quantum dots is perpendicular to the growth direction. These quantum dot complexes are called molecules because the small spacing between the quantum dots is expected to lead to the formation of molecular-like delocalized states. We present optical spectroscopy of ensembles and individual lateral quantum dot molecules as a function of electric fields applied along the growth direction. The results allow us to characterize the energy level structure of lateral quantum dot molecules and the spectral signatures of both charging and many-body interactions. Holes confined in single InAs quantum dots have recently emerged as a promising system for the storage or manipulation of quantum information. These holes are often assumed to have only heavy-hole character and further assumed to have no mixing between orthogonal heavy hole spin projections (in the absence of a transverse magnetic field). The same assumption has been applied to InAs quantum dot molecules formed by two stacked InAs quantum dots that are coupled by coherent tunneling of the hole between the two dots. We present experimental evidence of the existence of a hole spin mixing term obtained with magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy on such InAs quantum dot molecules. We use a Luttinger spinor model to explain the physical origin of this hole spin mixing term: misalignment of the dots along the stacking direction breaks the angular symmetry and allows mixing through the light-hole component of the spinor. We discuss how this novel spin mixing mechanism may offer new spin manipulation opportunities that are unique to holes., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

The spin-orbit interaction is a crucial element of many semiconductor spintronic technologies. Here we report the first experimental observation, by magneto-optical spectroscopy, of a remarkable consequence of the spin-orbit interaction for holes confined in the molecular states of coupled quantum dots. As the thickness of the barrier separating two coupled quantum dots is increased, the molecular ground state changes character from a bonding orbital to an antibonding orbital. This result is counterintuitive, and antibonding molecular ground states are never observed in natural diatomic molecules. We explain the origin of the reversal using a four band k.p model that has been validated by numerical calculations that account for strain. We present photoluminescence studies of the molecular neutral biexciton-exciton spectra of individual vertically stacked InAs/GaAs quantum dot pairs. We tune either the hole or the electron levels of the two dots into tunneling resonances. The spectra are described well within a few-level, few-particle molecular model. Most self-assembled quantum dot molecules are intrinsically asymmetric with inequivalent dots resulting from imperfect control of crystal growth. We have grown vertically-aligned pairs of InAs/GaAs quantum dots by molecular beam epitaxy, introducing intentional asymmetry that limits the influence of intrinsic growth fluctuations and allows selective tunneling of electrons or holes. We present a systemic investigation of tunneling energies over a wide range of interdot barrier thickness. We present a magneto-photoluminescence study of individual vertically stacked InAs/GaAs quantum dot pairs separated by thin tunnel barriers. As an applied electric field tunes the relative energies of the two dots, we observe a strong resonant increase or decrease in the g-factors of different spin states that have molecular wavefunctions distributed over both quantum dots. The interaction between spins in coupled quantum dots is revealed in distinct fine structure patterns in the measured optical spectra of InAs/GaAs double quantum dot molecules containing zero, one, or two excess holes. The fine structure is explained well in terms of a uniquely molecular interplay of spin exchange interactions, Pauli exclusion and orbital tunneling. We report polarized photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy of the negative trion in single charge tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dots. The spectrum exhibits a p-shell resonance with polarized fine structure arising from the direct excitation of the electron spin triplet states. The energy splitting arises from the axially symmetric electron-hole exchange interaction. The magnitude and sign of the polarization are understood from the spin character of the triplet states and a small amount of quantum dot asymmetry, which mixes the wavefunctions through asymmetric e-e and e-h exchange interactions.

Electrons bound to shallow donors in GaAs have orbital energy levels analogous to those of the hydrogen atom. The polarization selection rules for optical transitions between the states analogous to the 1s and 2p states of hydrogen in a magnetic field are verified using Terahertz (THz) radiation from the UCSB Free Electron Laser.
