We present Br$\gamma$ emission line kinematics of the nuclear region of NGC 253, recently known to host a strong galactic wind that limits the global star formation of the galaxy. We obtained high-resolution long-slit spectroscopic data with PHOENIX at Gemini-South, positioning the slit on the nucleus Infrared Core (IRC), close to the nuclear disk major axis. The spatial resolution was 0.35"($\sim$6 pc) and the slit length 14"($\sim$240 pc). The spectral resolution was $\sim$74000, unprecedented high for galactic nuclei observations at $\sim$2.1$\mu$m. The line profiles appear highly complex, with blue asymmetry up to 3.5'' away of the IRC, and red asymmetries further away to NE. Several Gaussian components are necessary to fit the profile, nevertheless a narrow and a wide ones predominate. The IRC presents kinematic widths above 700 kms$^{-1}$ (FWZI), and broad component FWHM$\sim$400 kms$^{-1}$, the highest detected in a nearby galaxy. At the IRC, the blue-shifted broad component displays a 90 km s$^{-1}$ bump in radial velocity distribution, a feature we previously detected in molecular gas kinematics. The narrow component velocity dispersion ($\sim$32 kms$^{-1}$) is within the expected for normal galaxies and LIRGs. Intermediate components (FWHM$\sim$150 kms$^{-1}$, red-shifted to NE, blue-shifted to SW) appear at some positions, as well as weaker blue (-215 kms$^{-1}$) and red line wings (+300 kms$^{-1}$). The IRC depicts a large broad vs. narrow line flux-ratio (F(B)/F(N)$\sim$1.35), and the broad component seems only comparable with those observed at very high star-forming rate galaxies. The results indicate that the IRC would be the main source of the galactic winds originated in the central region of NGC 253.

We have analyzed the frequency and properties of the nuclear activity in a sample of galaxies with circumnuclear rings and spirals (CNRs). This sample was compared with a control sample of galaxies with very similar global properties but without circumnuclear rings. We discuss the relevance of the results in regard to the AGN feeding processes and present the following results: (i) bright companion galaxies seem not to be important for the appearance of CNRs, which appear to be more related to intrinsic properties of the host galaxies or to minor merger processes; (ii) the proportion of strong bars in galaxies with an AGN and a CNR is somewhat higher than the expected ratio of strongly barred AGN galaxies from the results of Ho and co-workers; (iii) the incidence of Seyfert activity coeval with CNRs is clearly larger than the rate expected from the morphological distribution of the host galaxies; (iv) the rate of Sy 2 to Sy 1 type galaxies with CNRs is about three times larger than the expected ratio for galaxies without CNRs and is opposite to that predicted by the geometric paradigm of the classical unified model for AGNs, although it does support the hy-pothesis that Sy 2 activity is linked to circumnuclear star formation. The possible selection effects of the sample are discussed, and we conclude that the detected trends are strong enough to justify high quality observations of as large as possible sets of galaxies with circumnuclear rings and their matched control samples., Comment: Submitted to International Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics

A recent JHKs study of several grand-design spiral galaxies shows a bimodal distribution of their system of star clusters and star forming complexes in colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams. In a comparison with stellar population models including gas, the (J-H) vs (H-Ks) diagram reveals that embedded clusters, still immersed in their parental clouds of gas and dust, generally have a redder (H-Ks) colour than older clusters, whose gas and dust have already been ejected. This bimodal behaviour is also evident in the colour-magnitude diagram MK vs (J-Ks), where the brightest clusters split into two sequences separating younger from older clusters. In addition, the reddening-free index Qd = (H-Ks) - 0.884 (J-H) has been shown to correlate with age for the young clusters and thus provided an effective way to differentiate the embedded clusters from the older ones. We aim to study the behaviour of these photometric indices for star cluster systems in the Local Group. We investigate the effectiveness of the Qd index in sorting out clusters of different ages at their early evolutionary stages. Surface photometry was carried out for 2MASS images of populous clusters younger than ~100Myr whose ages were available. Some clusters, particularly the embedded ones, were studied for the first time using this method. The integrated magnitudes and colours extracted from the surface photometry of the most populous clusters/complexes in the Local Group shows the expected bimodal distribution in the colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. In particular, we confirm the index Qd as a powerful tool for distinguishing clusters younger than about 7Myr from older clusters. It is often argued that young stellar clusters suffer a significant infant mortality that is partly related to the expulsion of dust and gas in their early phases caused by radiation pressure from hot stars and supernovae. Near-infrared (J-K)-Mk diagrams of young stellar clusters in nearby spiral galaxies show a bi-modal distribution that is consistent with a fast decline of their intrinsic extinction at an early epoch. The distinct features in the color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) and the fast change of colors for the youngest clusters allow us to place constraints on their early evolutionary phases, including the time scale for the decreasing extinction caused for instance by gas and dust expulsion. Monte Carlo simulations of cluster populations were performed using the power-law distribution function g(M, t) ~ M^a t^gam. Integrated colors were computed from Starburst99 models. The simulated near-infrared CMD were compared with those observed for six grand-design, spiral galaxies using statistical goodness-of-fit tests. The CMDs indicate a significant mortality of young, massive clusters with gam = -1.4 +-0.5. High initial extinction Av = 8-11m and strong nebular emission are required to reproduce the bi-modal color distributions of the clusters. An extended star formation phase of longer than 5 Myr is suggested. Deep, near-infrared JHK-maps were observed for 10 nearby, grand-design, spiral galaxies using HAWK-I/VLT to study the distribution of young stellar clusters in them and thereby determine whether strong spiral perturbations can influence star formation. Complete, magnitude-limited candidate lists of star-forming complexes were obtained by searching within the K-band maps. The properties of the complexes were derived from (H-K)-(J-H) diagrams including the identification of the youngest complexes (i.e. <7 Myr) and the estimation of their extinction. Young stellar clusters with ages <7 Myr have significant internal extinction in the range of Av=3-7m, while older ones typically have Av<1m. The cluster luminosity function (CLF) is well-fitted by a power law with an exponent of around -2 and displays no evidence of a high luminosity cut-off. The brightest cluster complexes in the disk reach luminosities of Mk = -15.5m or estimated masses of 10^6 Mo. At radii with a strong, two-armed spiral pattern, the star formation rate in the arms is higher by a factor of 2-5 than in the inter-arm regions. The CLF in the arms is also shifted towards brighter Mk by at least 0.4m. We also detect clusters with colors compatible with Large Magellanic Cloud intermediate age clusters and Milky Way globular clusters. The (J-K)-Mk diagram of several galaxies shows, for the brightest clusters, a clear separation between young clusters that are highly attenuated by dust and older ones with low extinction. The gap in the (J-K)-Mk diagrams implies that there has been a rapid expulsion of dust at an age around 7 Myr, possibly triggered by supernovae. Observations in the near-infrared (NIR) allow a detailed study of young stellar clusters in grand-design spiral galaxies which in visual bands often are highly obscured by dust lanes along the arms. Deep JHK-maps of 10 spirals were obtained with HAWK-I/VLT. Data for NGC 2997 are presented here to illustrate the general results for the sample. The (H-K)-(J-H) diagrams suggest that most stellar clusters younger than 7 Myr are significantly attenuated by dust with visual extinctions reaching 7 mag. A gap between younger and older cluster complexes in the (J-K)-Mk diagram indicates a rapid reduction of extinction around 7 Myr possibly due to expulsion of dust and gas after supernovae explosions. The cluster luminosity function is consistent with a power law with an exponent alpha ~ 2. Cluster luminosities of Mk = -15 mag are reached, corresponding to masses close to 10^6 Mo, with no indication of a cut-off. Their azimuthal angles relative to the main spiral arms show that the most massive clusters are formed in the arm regions while fainter ones also are seen between the arms. In the 60's, Prof. Stroemgren proposed to use space velocities and ages of moderately young stars to compute their places of formation in order to study the spiral structure in the Galaxy. We have extended this idea to very young stellar clusters in nearby disk galaxies. Near-infrared (NIR) K-band images of grand-design spiral galaxies often show bright knots along their spiral arms. Such knots in NGC 2997 have been identified as massive stellar clusters with ages of less than 10 Myr using JHK photometry and K-band spectra. Ages of these clusters can be estimated from JHK photometry. Their azimuthal distances from the spiral arms, as measured in the K-band, correlates with their ages suggesting that the pattern speed of an underlying density wave can be derived. All slightly extended sources were identified on deep K-band maps of 46 spiral galaxies reaching at least K=20.3 mag/arcsec2 at a signal-to-noise level of 3. The galaxies had inclination angles <65 deg and linear resolutions <100 pc with seeing better than 1". The sample includes both barred and normal spirals with a wide spread in types. We also analyzed J- and H-band colors for 4 galaxies for which such images were available. An apparent magnitude limit of K = 19 mag was used for the sources analyzed in order to avoid marginal detections. Furthermore, we derived the source distributions of magnitudes and relative locations with respect to the spiral patterns. Almost 70% (15/22) of the grand-design spiral galaxies show significant concentration of bright K-band knots in their arm regions corresponding to 30% (15/46) of the full sample. Color-color diagrams for the 4 spirals with JHK photometry suggest that a significant fraction of the diffuse sources found in the arms are complexes of young stellar clusters with ages <10 Myr and reddened with several magnitudes of visual extinction. The brightest knots reach an absolute K-band magnitude Mk of -15.5 mag corresponding to stellar clusters or complexes with total masses up to at least 10^5 Mo. Brightest magnitude and number of knots correlate with the total absolute magnitude of the host galaxy. More knots are seen in galaxies with high far-infrared flux and strong two-armed spiral perturbations. The bright knots constitute up to a few percent of the total K-band flux from their parent galaxy and account for a star formation rate of ~1 Mo/yr for the brightest grand-design spiral galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures plus online material. accepted for publication in A&A

A study of morphology, kinematics and ionization structure of the IR merger NGC 5514, is presented. This study is based mainly on Integral 2D spectroscopy obtained on 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (La Palma, Spain) and data from CASLEO (Argentina). Clear evidence of two extra-nuclear starbursts with young outflows and LINER activity are reported. One of these outflow generate a supergiant bubble, where the emission lines and kinematics maps show 4 extended ejections. The possible physical relation between the closely projected open clusters NGC 1912 (M 38) and NGC 1907 is investigated. Previous studies suggested a physical pair based on similar distances, and the present study explores in more detail the possible interaction. Spatial velocities are derived from available radial velocities and proper motions, and the past orbital motions of the clusters are retrieved in a Galactic potential model. Detailed N-body simulations of their approach suggest that the clusters were born in different regions of the Galaxy and presently experience a fly-by., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 7 pages, 10 figures

Photometry in the B and V bands is presented for the southern stellar groups NGC 1901 and NGC 1252. NGC 1901 is often described as an open cluster while NGC 1252 consists of a concentration of about 20 stars centered approx 20' north of the original New General Catalogue coordinates, and at the southwest edge of the large region previously assigned to this object in the literature. NGC 1901 has a clear main sequence and shares similarities with the Hyades. We derive a reddening value E(B-V) = 0.04, a distance from the Sun d = 0.45 kpc (Z = -0.23 kpc) and an age 0.6 +/- 0.1 Gyr. NGC 1901 is conclusively a physical system, dynamically comparable to or more evolved than the Hyades. The colour- magnitude diagram of NGC 1252 suggests a turnoff and main sequence, and a total of 12 probable members. We simulated the Galactic field colour-magnitude diagram in the same direction and found it to be a poor match to NGC 1252, suggesting that NGC 1252 is not a field fluctuation. Isochrone fitting to the probable members is consistent with E(B-V) = 0.02, a distance from the Sun d = 0.64 kpc (Z = -0.46 kpc) and an age 3 +/- 1 Gyr. NGC 1252 cannot be ruled out as a physical group with the available data. We present a list of 34 neglected entries from star cluster catalogues located at relatively high galactic latitudes ($|b| >$ 15$^{\circ}$) which appear to be candidate late stages of star cluster dynamical evolution. Although underpopulated with respect to usual open clusters, they still present a high number density contrast as compared to the galactic field. This was verified by means of (i) predicted model counts from different galactic subsystems in the same direction, and (ii) Guide Star Catalog equal solid angle counts for the object and surrounding fields. This suggests that the objects are physical systems, possibly star clusters in the process of disruption or their fossil remains. We report -as a part of a long-term study of mergers and IR QSOs- detailed spectroscopic evidences for outflow (OF) and/or Wolf Rayet features in: (i) low velocity OF in the ongoing mergers NGC 4038/39 and IRAS 23128-5919; (ii) extreme velocity OF (EVOF) in the QSOs IRAS 01003-2238 and IRAS 13218+0552; (iii) OF and EVOF in a complete sample of ultra-luminous IR galaxies/QSOs ("The IRAS 1 Jy MKO-KPNO Survey", of 118 objects). We found EVOF in IRAS 11119+3257, 14394+5332, 15130+1958 and 15462-0450. The OF components detected in these objects were mainly associated to starburst processes: i.e., to galactic-winds generated in multiple type II SN explosions and massive stars. The EVOF were detected in objects with strong starburst plus obscured IR QSOs; which suggest that interaction of both processes could generate EVOF. In addition, we analyze the presence of Wolf Rayet features in the large sample of Bright PG-QSOs (Boroson and Green 1992), and nearby mergers and galactic-wind galaxies. We found clear WR features in the Fe II QSOs (type I): PG 1244+026, 1444+407, 1448+273, 1535+547; and in the IR merger Arp 220. HST archive images of IR+BAL QSOs show in practically all of these objects "arc or shell" features probably associated to galactic-winds (i.e., to multiple type II SN explosions) and/or merger processes. Finally, we discuss the presence of extreme starburst and galactic wind as a possible evolutive link between IR merger and IR QSOs; where the relation between mergers and extreme starburst (with powerful galactic-winds) plays in important role, in the evolution of galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

An isophotal atlas of 75 star cluster pairs and multiplets in the Small Magellanic Cloud is presented, comprising 176 objects. They are concentrated in the SMC main body. The isophotal contours were made from Digitized Sky Survey images and showed relevant structural features possibly related to interactions in about 25% of the sample. Previous N-body simulations indicate that such shapes could be due to tidal tails, bridges or common envelopes. The diameter ratio between the members of a pair is preferentially in the range 1 - 2, with a peak at 1. The projected separation is in the range ~ 3 - 22 pc with a pronounced peak at ~ 13 pc. For 91 objects it was possible to derive ages from Colour-Magnitude Diagrams using the OGLE-II photometric survey. The cluster multiplets in general occur in OB stellar associations and/or HII region complexes. This indicates a common origin and suggests that multiplets coalesce into pairs or single clusters in a short time scale. Pairs in the SMC appear to be mostly coeval and consequently captures are a rare phenomenon. We find evidence that star cluster pairs and multiplets may have had an important role in the dynamical history of clusters presently seen as large single objects., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, LaTeX 2e. We find in a detailed morphological study (at 15 pc resolution) that the extended massive star formation process, shows: (i) extended triple asymmetrical spiral arms structure (r = 5 kpc); and (ii) the spiral arms emanate from three different nuclei. The main optical nucleus shows a small spiral-disk (r = 500 pc) which is a continuation of the external one and reach the very nucleus. And this very nucleus shows blue elongate structure (63 pc x 30 pc), and luminous blue star cluster properties. We study the kinematics of this system and present a detailed Halpha velocity field for the central region (r = 5 kpc). In the main optical nucleus we found a clear "outflow component" associated to galactic-winds and a "inflow radial motion" (in the spiral-disk nuclear structure, r = 700 pc). In addition we detected the outflow component in the central and external regions (r < 5-6 kpc), with a very wide opening angle of 140. We found that the mean value of the inflow region (at PA = 80) is practically perpendicular to the axis of the bipolar outflow (at PA = 160). We analyze in detail the physical conditions in the giant H II regions located in the asymmetric spiral arms, the two main optical nuclei, and the outflow component. In the central region (r = 5-6 kpc) we detected that the nuclear starburst and the extended giant H II regions have very similar properties. We suggest that the interaction between dynamical effects, the galactic--wind (outflow), low-energy cosmic rays, and the molecular+ionized gas (probably in the inflow phase) could be the possible mechanism that generate the "similar extended properties in the massive star formation, at scale of 5-6 kpc!". We performed numerical simulations of star cluster encounters with Hernquist's TREECODE in a CRAY YMP-2E computer. We used different initial conditions (relative positions and velocities, cluster sizes, masses and concentration degrees) with total number of particles per simulation ranging from 4608 to 20480. Long term interaction stages (up to 1 Gyr) when the pair coalesces into a single cluster are compared with isolated LMC clusters. Evidence is found that when seen in a favourable plane these resulting clusters show elliptical shapes due to the disruption of one of the companions. These elliptical shapes are essentially time independent but they do depend on the initial structural parameters of the pair components. We also analyzed the fraction of stars that are ejected to the field by the interaction. We found that this fraction can be almost 50% for the disrupted cluster. These simulations can represent a possible mechanism to explain the ellipticity observed on several star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds., Comment: 11 pages, Latex, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of three proplyd-like structures in the giant HII region NGC 3603. The emission nebulae are clearly resolved in narrow-band and broad-band HST/WFPC2 observations in the optical and broad-band VLT/ISAAC observations in the near-infrared. All three nebulae are tadpole shaped, with the bright ionization front at the head facing the central cluster and a fainter ionization front around the tail pointing away from the cluster. Typical sizes are 6,000 A.U. x 20,000 A.U. The nebulae share the overall morphology of the proplyds (``PROto PLanetarY DiskS'') in Orion, but are 20 to 30 times larger in size. Additional faint filaments located between the nebulae and the central ionizing cluster can be interpreted as bow shocks resulting from the interaction of the fast winds from the high-mass stars in the cluster with the evaporation flow from the proplyds. The striking similarity of the tadpole shaped emission nebulae in NGC 3603 to the proplyds in Orion suggests that the physical structure of both types of objects might be the same. We present 2D radiation hydrodynamical simulations of an externally illuminated star-disk-envelope system, which was still in its main accretion phase when first exposed to ionizing radiation from the central cluster. The simulations reproduce the overall morphology of the proplyds in NGC 3603 very well, but also indicate that mass-loss rates of up to 10^-5 Mo/yr are required in order to explain the size of the proplyds. We present Washington C, T1 CCD photometry of 21 fields located in the northern part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and spread over a region of more than 2.52 degrees approximately 6 degrees from the bar. The surveyed areas were chosen on the basis of their proximity to SL 388 and SL 509, whose fields showed the presence of a secondary giant clump, observationally detected by Bica et al. (1998, AJ, 116, 723). From the collected data we found that most of the observed field CMDs do not show a separate secondary clump, but rather a continuous vertical structure (VS), which is clearly seen for the first time. Its position and size are nearly the same throughout the surveyed regions: it lies below the Red Giant Clump (RGC) and extends from the bottom of the RGC to approximately 0.45 mag fainter, spanning the bluest color range of the RGC. The more numerous the VS stars in a field, the larger the number of LMC giants in the same zone. Our analysis demonstrate that VS stars belong to the LMC and are most likely the consequence of some kind of evolutionary process in the LMC, particularly in those LMC regions with a noticeable large giant population. Our results suggest that in order to trigger the formation of VS stars, there should be other conditions besides the appropriate age, metallicity, and the necessary red giant star density. Indeed, stars satisfying the requisites mentioned above are commonly found throughout the LMC, but the VS phenomenon is only clearly seen in some isolated regions. A comparative analysis of Washington color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for 14 star clusters and respective surrounding fields in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) outer disk is presented. Each CCD frame including field and respective cluster covers an area of 185 arcmin^2. The stellar population sampled is of intermediate age and metallicity.
